Development and psychometric properties of the social adjustment scale for youth cancer survivors in South Korea

Objective

We developed a new scale-the Social Adjustment Scale for Youth Cancer Survivors-and examined its psychometric properties.

Methods

In the scale's development stage, preliminary items were constructed based on the results of a concept analysis of the hybrid model, literature review, and interviews. These items were then reviewed through content validity and cognitive interviews. In the validation stage, 136 survivors were recruited from two children's cancer centers in Seoul, South Korea. An exploratory factor analysis was performed to identify a set of constructs, and validity and reliability were tested.

Results

Starting with 70 items constructed through literature review and interviews with youth survivors, the final scale comprised 32 items. The exploratory factor analysis identified four domains-namely, role achievement in one's present position, harmony in relationships, disclosure and acceptance of cancer history, and preparation and expectation for future roles. Correlations with quality of life indicated good convergent validity (r ​= ​0.82, P ​< ​0.001). The Cronbach's α of the overall scale was 0.95, indicating excellent internal consistency; and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.94 (P ​< ​0.001), suggesting high test-retest reliability.

Conclusions

The Social Adjustment Scale for Youth Cancer Survivors exhibited acceptable psychometric properties in measuring the social adjustment of youth cancer survivors. It can be used to identify youths facing difficulty in adjusting to society after treatment and to investigate the effect of interventions implemented to promote social adjustment among youth cancer survivors. Future research is needed to examine the applicability of the scale in patients across diverse cultural backgrounds and healthcare systems.

Parents' Perception of Self-Management Behaviors for Their Children With Spina Bifida in South Korea: A Qualitative Study

PURPOSE

This study aimed to explore parents' perceptions of self-management behaviors for their children with spina bifida (SB).

DESIGN

Qualitative method.

METHODS

In-depth interviews were conducted with nine Korean parents of children with SB. The data were analyzed using the content analysis method.

FINDINGS

Parental perceptions of the experiences of self-management behaviors in children with SB were classified into risk factors that hinder self-management behaviors and protective factors that accelerate them. Each category of factors was then further classified into child-, parent-, and school-related factors.

CONCLUSIONS

To promote self-management behaviors in children with SB, reducing risk factors and promoting protective factors considering child, family, and school dimensions based on cultural differences are necessary.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Rehabilitation nurses should be considered essential healthcare providers who can offer stepwise guidance to achieve self-management behaviors in children with SB according to their stage of development.

Health-related quality of life of children and adolescents after hematopoietic stem cell transplantationa

PURPOSE

This study aimed to determine the level of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children and adolescents who received hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and to examine factors influencing HRQoL.

METHODS

This cross-sectional descriptive study involved 85 participants aged 10 to 19 years who received treatment from 3 months to 5 years after HSCT. Symptom experiences, stress and coping, self-esteem, social support, and HRQoL were measured. Descriptive analysis, the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis.

RESULTS

The mean HRQoL score was 72.26 points out of 100. HRQoL showed statistically significant correlations with symptom experiences, stress, self-esteem, social support, satisfaction with peer relationships, and perceived attentiveness of the medical team. The most influential predictors of HRQoL were symptom experiences (β=-.51, p<.001) and satisfaction with peer relationships (β=.32, p<.001).

CONCLUSION

The experiences of different symptoms by children and adolescents who receive HSCT must be considered. In addition, nursing interventions, such as self-help meetings with peer groups, should be provided to improve their HRQoL.

Posttraumatic Growth of Adolescents with Childhood Leukemia and their Parents

Purpose

Childhood leukemia is a serious trauma affecting both adolescents and their parents, who experience painful process. However, adolescents with leukemia and their parents also experience positive changes, which is referred to as posttraumatic growth. We examined posttraumatic growth, core beliefs, impact of event, and event-related rumination in adolescents within 5 years of a diagnosis of childhood leukemia and their parents.

Methods

The participants were 68 adolescents with childhood leukemia (aged 13~18 years) and their parents, who were recruited from C university hospital in Korea from May to September 2016. The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Core Belief Inventory, Impact of Event Scale-Revised, and Event-related Rumination Inventory were completed by the adolescents and their parents. The mean scores and correlations between variables were investigated for both set of participants.

Results

Parents showed significantly higher levels of posttraumatic growth, disruption of core beliefs, impact of event, and invasive rumination than adolescents. Disruption of core beliefs and deliberate rumination were positively correlated with posttraumatic growth in both groups.

Conclusion

Nursing intervention programs that involve modifying core beliefs and inducing a positive thought can help adolescents with leukemia and their parents grow after traumatic events.
