Biaxial flexural strength and phase transformation of Ce-TZP/Al2O3 and Y-TZP core materials after thermocycling and mechanical loading

Biaxial flexural strength and Weibull characteristics of a resin ceramic material after thermal-cycling

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the flexural strength and Weibull characteristics of 3 different resin-ceramic materials with a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate material after thermal-cycling.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Four different computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing restorative materials (Vita Enamic, Lava Ultimate, Crystal Ultra, and Vita Suprinity) were tested. A total of 40 Ø12×1.2-mm disks were prepared and divided into 4 groups (n = 10). Their flexural strength was evaluated after 5000 thermal-cycles with a 4-point biaxial flexure test using a universal testing machine. The Weibull modulus and probability of failure were also determined from the biaxial flexural strength data. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and the Tukey pairwise comparison test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

Significant differences were found among the materials in terms of biaxial flexural strength (p < 0.05). Vita Suprinity had the highest mean ±standard deviation flexural strength (289.1 ± 15.1 MPa), and Vita Enamic had the lowest (100.0 ± 3.2 MPa). The highest Weibull modulus was calculated for Crystal Ultra, followed by Vita Enamic, Lava Ultimate, and Vita Suprinity.

CONCLUSION

Vita Suprinity had the highest flexural strength when compared with the other materials tested. Crystal Ultra had the highest flexural strength among the resin-ceramic materials. The highest Weibull modulus was calculated for Crystal Ultra and the lowest for Vita Suprinity.

Effects of dimensions of laser-milled grid-like microslits on shear bond strength between porcelain or indirect composite resin and zirconia

PURPOSE

Zirconia cores and frameworks are widely used in restorative dentistry. Although these structures are veneered with porcelain for esthetic reasons, the use of indirect composite resins (ICRs) is expected to increase in the future. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of microslits of different dimensions formed by Nd:YVO 4 laser machining on the bond strength between two types of zirconia (3 mol% yttria-partially stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) and ceria-partially stabilized zirconia/alumina nanocomposite (Ce-TZP/A)) and porcelain or an ICR.

METHODS

The zirconia disks were assigned as follows: 1) blasted with alumina particles (AB) and 2-4) surface machined with gridded microslits with a width, pitch, and depth of 50, 75, or 100 µm (MS50, MS75, and MS100, respectively). After the bonding of the veneering materials to the disks, half of the specimens veneered with the ICR were subjected to thermocycling (4-60°C, 20000 cycles). All the specimens were subsequently shear tested (n = 10/group).

RESULTS

There was no significant difference between the groups of the disks bonded to porcelain. On the other hand, for the disks bonded to the ICR, the bond strengths of the MS groups after thermocycling were statistically higher than that of the AB group. However, there was no significant difference in the bond strengths of the disks with different microslits.

CONCLUSIONS

Within the study limitations, it can be concluded that, for porcelain, the design of the mechanical retentive structure must be modified. However, for the investigated ICR, a simple gridded pattern can improve the bond strength with zirconia.

New insights into bioactivity of ceria-stabilized zirconia: Direct bonding to bone-like hydroxyapatite at nanoscale

Osseointegration resulting from biomineralization means tight bone-implant attachment, which is clinically essential for successful dental implant treatment. The osseointegration ability of ceria-stabilized zirconia, a promising implant material, has been questionable and is unclear despite its clinical use due to zirconia's bioinert nature. The purpose of this research was to investigate the osseointegration ability of ceria-stabilized zirconia by clarifying its bioactivity. Here we show that ceria-stabilized zirconia is highly bioactive, contrary to the general consensus. Transmission electron microscopy observation revealed that the zirconia nanocrystals of a ceria-stabilized zirconia substrate directly bonded to osteoblastic cell-precipitated hydroxyapatite crystals at lattice fringe scale. This bonding was achieved without chemical treatment of the substrate surface before use. Hydroxyapatite crystals exhibited a morphology of flexible nanofibers less than 10 nm wide with nanometer-thick plates filling the spaces between nanofibers. Elemental analysis of the hydroxyapatites showed that they contained alkaline metal cations (Na, Mg, and K) as minor elements and that their average Ca/P atomic % ratio was ~1.40, similar to those of bone apatite. High bioactivity of ceria-stabilized zirconia resulted in direct bonding to bone-like hydroxyapatite, suggesting nanoscale direct osseointegration with bone in vivo that contributes to improving the success rate of dental implant treatment.

Layered Manufacturing of Dental Ceramics: Fracture Mechanics, Microstructure, and Elemental Composition of Lithography-Sintered Ceramic

PURPOSE

To compare the fracture mechanics, microstructure, and elemental composition of lithography-based ceramic manufacturing with pressing and CAD/CAM.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Disc-shaped specimens (16 mm diameter, 1.2 mm thick) were used for mechanical testing (n = 10/group). Biaxial flexural strength of three groups (In-Ceram alumina [ICA], lithography-based alumina, ZirkonZahn) were determined using the "piston on 3-ball" technique as suggested in test Standard ISO-6872. Vickers hardness test was performed. Fracture toughness was calculated using fractography. Results were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunnett T3 (α = 0.05). Weibull analysis was conducted. Polished and fracture surface characterization was made using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used for elemental analysis.

RESULTS

Biaxial flexural strength of ICA, LCM alumina (LCMA), and ZirkonZahn were 147 ± 43 MPa, 490 ± 44 MPa, and 709 ± 94 MPa, respectively, and were statistically different (P ≤ 0.05). The Vickers hardness number of ICA was 850 ± 41, whereas hardness values for LCMA and ZirkonZahn were 1581 ± 144 and 1249 ± 57, respectively, and were statistically different (P ≤ 0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between fracture toughness of ICA (2 ± 0.4 MPa⋅m^1/2 ), LCMA (6.5 ± 1.5 MPa⋅m^1/2 ), and ZirkonZahn (7.7 ± 1 MPa⋅m^1/2 ) (P ≤ 0.05). Weibull modulus was highest for LCMA (m = 11.43) followed by ZirkonZahn (m = 8.16) and ICA (m = 5.21). Unlike LCMA and ZirkonZahn groups, a homogeneous microstructure was not observed for ICA. EDS results supported the SEM images.

CONCLUSIONS

Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it can be concluded that LCM seems to be a promising technique for final ceramic object manufacturing in dental applications. Both the manufacturing method and the material used should be improved.

Influence of Different Framework Designs on the Fracture Properties of Ceria-Stabilized Tetragonal Zirconia/Alumina-Based All-Ceramic Crowns

The aim of this study was to evaluate the fracture load and failure mode of all-ceramic crowns with different ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia/alumina nanocomposite (Ce-TZP/A) framework designs. Four frameworks (anatomical shape: AS, with a buccal or lingual supporting structure: BS and LS, or buccal and lingual supporting structures: BLS) were fabricated. All frameworks were veneered with porcelain to fabricate all-ceramic crowns followed by cementation to tooth analogs. The fracture load of each crown either without or with pre-loading (1.2 million cycles, 49 N) was measured. The failure mode was classified into partial or complete fracture. Differences were tested for significance (p < 0.05) by a two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Tukey’s test and by Fisher’s exact test, respectively. Without pre-loading, supporting structures did not influence the fracture load or failure mode. Partial fractures were the most common failure mode. Pre-loading promoted the severity of the failure mode, although the fracture load among the framework designs was not influenced. In the AS group, prefailures were observed during pre-loading, and complete fractures were significantly increased after pre-loading. In contrast, the failure mode of the BLS group remained unchanged, showing only partial fracture even after pre-loading. This Ce-TZP/A framework design, comprised of an anatomical shape with additional buccal and lingual structures, has the potential to reduce the chipping of the veneering porcelain.
