Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Gastroesophageal reflux disease causes gastric acid to enter the oral cavity, leading to mucosal changes and deterioration of dental hard tissues and materials. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the impact of gastric juice on the surface roughness of two types of acrylics used in provisional restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Acrytemp ® and Temdent acrylic resin discs (10 × 2 mm) totaling 80 were manufactured and divided into eight groups (n = 10). Groups were prepared as follows: Group 1 (Temdent + Universal Polish) (control), Group 2 (Temdent + Universal Polish + Biscover LV), Group 3 (Temdent + Universal Polish + Resin Glaze), Group 4 (Temdent + Universal Polish + Fortify Plus), Group 5 (Acrytemp + Universal Polish) (control), Group 6 (Acrytemp + Universal Polish + Biscover LV), Group 7 (Acrytemp + Universal Polish + Resin Glaze), and Group 8 (Acrytemp + Universal Polish + Fortify Plus). The resin discs were immersed in distilled water for 24 h and in gastric juice (pH = 2) for additional 24 h. The initial and final roughness values of samples were measured and analyzed with non-parametric statistics including Mann-Whitney U-test for pairwise comparison, Kruskall Wallis test for comparing more than two groups, and Wilcoxon signed rank test for within-group comparison (P < 0.05). RESULTS Surface roughness did not differ significantly between control groups. It notably increased for all samples with surface sealants, both initially and after gastric juice immersion (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Surface sealants noticeably increased the roughness of two types of acrylic resins. After immersing in gastric juice, Group 4 (Temdent + Universal Polish + Fortify Plus) showed the highest roughness, while the untreated control groups remained the smoothest.

Abstract
Objective In this in vitro study, we aimed to analyse the enamel-remineralisation potential of propolis. Materials and methods Twenty enamel blocks (N = 20) were randomly divided into two groups (n = 10). In group 1 (control), enamel blocks were brushed with artificial saliva (AS). In group 2, they were brushed with propolis oil. All the blocks were demineralised by exposing them to 6 wt% citric acid (pH: 2.2) for 5 min. Brushing was performed inside a tooth brushing simulation machine with manual toothbrushes. Each sample received 5,000 linear strokes. Surface microhardness analysis was performed for each sample at three time intervals (pre-demineralisation or baseline, post-demineralisation, and post-remineralisation) to obtain the Vickers hardness numbers (VHNs). Results An enhancement in the microhardness of the enamel samples was observed after brushing with propolis oil when compared with brushing using AS alone. In group 1 (control group), the mean baseline VHN was 583.66. It decreased to 116.23 after demineralisation and increased to 184.02 after remineralisation. The mean baseline VHN of group 2 was 506.91. It decreased to 317.60 after demineralisation and increased to 435.19 after remineralisation. The VHN values of both the groups revealed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in inter-group and intra-group comparisons. Conclusion Brushing of enamel blocks with propolis led to a greater enhancement in their microhardness levels when compared with the control group. Future studies are essential to validate the exact mechanism of the beneficial effects of propolis on enamel.

Abstract
Aim: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a very common condition whose consequences of are localized not only in the esophagus; extra-esophageal involvement has frequently been reported. The aim of the study is to examine the incidence and pattern of dental erosion in GERD patients. Methodology: A total of 50 patients were recruited in this study (control -25 and GERD -25). All participants diagnosed having GERD by the endoscopic examination by their gastroenterologist are included. The patients were examined for dental erosion and will be quantified using Basic erosive wear examination index. Results: The results showed that the incidence of dental erosion was 88% as compared to 32% in the control group which was found to be statistically significant.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Tooth wear is a complex multifactorial process that involves the loss of hard dental tissue. Parafunctional habits have been mentioned as a self-destructive process caused by stress, which results in hyperactivity of masticatory muscles. Stress manifests itself through teeth grinding, leading to progressive teeth wear. The effects of continuous exposure to industrial noise, a "stressor" agent, cannot be ignored and its effects on the teeth must be evaluated. AIMS The aim of this study was to ascertain the effects of industrial noise on dental wear over time, by identifying and quantifying crown area loss. MATERIAL AND METHODS 39 Wistar rats were used. Thirty rats were divided in 3 experimental groups of 10 animals each. Animals were exposed to industrial noise, rich in LFN components, for 1, 4 and 7 months, with an average weekly exposure of 40 hours (8h/day, 5 days/week with the weekends in silence). The remaining 9 animals were kept in silence. The areas of the three main cusps of the molars were measured under light microscopy. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED A two-way ANOVA model was applied at significance level of 5%. RESULTS The average area of the molar cusps was significantly different between exposed and non-exposed animals. The most remarkable differences occurred between month 1 and 4. The total crown loss from month 1 to month 7 was 17.3% in the control group, and 46.5% in the exposed group, and the differences between these variations were significant (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that industrial noise is an important factor in the pathogenesis of tooth wear.

Abstract
The gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the main causes of dental erosion. The aim of this case presented is to describe the prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with GERD after 4 years of followup. A 33-year-old male patient complained about tooth sensitivity. The lingual surface of the maxillary anterior teeth and the cusps of the upper and lower posterior teeth presented wear. It was suspected that the feeling of heartburn reported by the patient associated with the intake of sports supplements (isotonics) was causing gastroesophageal changes. The patient was referred to a gastroenterologist and was diagnosed with GERD. Dental treatment was performed with metal-free crowns and porcelain veneers after medical treatment of the disease. With the change in eating habits, the treatment of GERD and lithium disilicate ceramics provided excellent cosmetic results after 4 years and the patient reported satisfaction with the treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Dental erosion is a complication of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) in adults; in children, it is not clear if GER has a role in dental pathologic conditions. Dietary intake, oral hygiene, high bacterial load, and decreased salivary flow might contribute independently to GER development or dental erosion, but their potential involvement in dental erosion from GER is not understood. We investigated the prevalence of dental erosion among children with and without GER symptoms, and whether salivary flow rate or bacterial load contribute to location-specific dental erosion. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study of 59 children (ages, 9-17 y) with symptoms of GER and 20 asymptomatic children (controls); all completed a questionnaire on dietary exposure. Permanent teeth were examined for erosion into dentin, erosion locations, and affected surfaces. The dentist was not aware of GER status, and the gastroenterologist was not aware of dental status. Stimulated salivary flow was measured and salivary bacterial load was calculated for total bacteria, Streptococcus mutans, and Lactobacilli. RESULTS Controlling for age, dietary intake, and oral hygiene, there was no association between GER symptoms and dental erosion by tooth location or affected surface. Salivary flow did not correlate with GER symptoms or erosion. Erosion location and surface were independent of total bacteria and levels of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli. CONCLUSIONS Location-specific dental erosion is not associated with GER, salivary flow, or bacterial load. Prospective studies are required to determine the pathogenesis of GER-associated dental erosion and the relationship between dental caries to GER and dental erosion.

Abstract
This study evaluated the influence of a cola-type soft drink and a soy-based orange juice on the surface and subsurface erosion of primary enamel, as a function of the exposure time. Seventy-five primary incisors were divided for microhardness test (n=45) or scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis (n=30). The specimens were randomly assigned to 3 groups: 1 - artificial saliva (control); 2 - cola-type soft drink; and 3 - soy-based orange juice. Immersion cycles in the beverages were undertaken under agitation for 5 min, 3 times a day, during 60 days. Surface microhardness was measured at 7, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days. After 60 days, specimens were bisected and subsurface microhardness was measured at 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 200 µm from the surface exposed. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey’s test (a=0.05). Groups 2 and 3 presented similar decrease of surface microhardness. Regarding subsurface microhardness, group 2 presented the lowest values. SEM images revealed that after 60 days the surfaces clearly exhibited structural loss, unlike those immersed in artificial saliva. It may be concluded that erosion of the surfaces exposed to the cola-type soft drink was more accentuated and directly proportional to the exposure time.
