Abstract
The chronological age estimation of living individuals is a crucial part of forensic practice and clinical practice, such as in orthodontic treatment. It is well-known that methods for age estimation in living children should be tested on different populations. Ethnic affiliations in Brazil are divided into several major groups depending on the region, with the south of Brazil being known for its German immigration. (1) Background: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between chronological age and dental age using Demirjian's method and Cameriere's method in a group of children from Joinville, South Brazil to investigate if both methods can be used to estimate dental age in this population. (2) Methods: The sample consisted of 229 panoramic radiographs (119 were males and were 110 females) from Brazilian children (ages ranging from 6 to 12 years). The chronological age at the time of the panoramic radiographic exam was calculated for each child. The dental age was estimated according to Demirjian's method and Cameriere's method. All continuous data were tested for normality by using the Shapiro-Wilk test. The Pearson correlation coefficient test was applied. An alpha of 5% (p < 0.05) was used for all analyses. (3) Results: The mean chronological age was 8.75 years. According to Demirjian's method, the mean dental age was 9.3 years, while according to Cameriere's method, the mean dental age was 8.66 years. A strong correlation between chronological age and dental age according to Demirjian (r = 0.776 and p < 0.0001) and Cameriere (r = 0.735 and p < 0.0001) was observed for both genders. (4) Conclusions: Both methods presented a good correlation with chronological age in the studied population and could be used to assess dental age in this population.

Abstract
Country-specific systematic reviews and meta-analyses have been proposed to compile the available literature and rank methods based on their performance for a target population. India is a country with a vast scientific literature on dental age estimation. This systematic review aimed to provide evidence to help the decision of experts regarding the method of choice for dental age estimation in India. The research protocol was registered in Open Science Framework. Literature Search was performed in Embase, LILACS, MedLine (via PubMed), SciELO, Scopus and Web of Science. Grey Literature was searched in Google Scholar and ProQuest. Observational cross-sectional studies that compared chronological and estimated ages using Demirjian (original [DEM] and Chaillet's modification [modified-DEM]) and Acharya (ACH) methods were included. JBI tool was used to assess the risk of bias. The search detected 9799 studies, out of which 56 were eligible (n=13,107 panoramic radiographs of Indian individuals). Low risk of bias was registered for 48 studies, while 8 presented a moderate risk of bias. The meta-analysis showed a standardized mean difference between chronological and estimated ages of -0.11 (95%CI: -0.29; 0.07), 0.74 (95%CI: 0.39; 1.09), and -0.01 (95%CI: -0.23; 0.22) years for DEM, modified-DEM and ACH, respectively. High heterogeneity (I2=88-93%) was observed across studies for all the methods, including subgroup analyses based on sex. This study ranked ACH, DEM and modified-DEM (from the best to the worse) performances in the Indian population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of the methods from the past and present, such as Demirjian, Cameriere, and AlQahtani, as well as to determine the most reliable method for human age estimation under the request from the courts according to the effect size from each method in age estimation. DESIGN Four hundred eighty-three orthopantomographic images were selected from 318 patients from Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte aged between 6 and 15 years old. Several measurements of widths and lengths and classification of tooth development stages were performed, according to each age estimation method. The listing of patients and orthopantomographic images were consulted through SECTRA®. All data was entered and analysed using SPSS version 28. Observations' validity was verified through inter- and intraobserver validation. RESULTS The correlation coefficients between age and age estimates by the three methods on both sides were close to 90%. Regarding the estimation error correlation coefficient, Demirjian and AlQahtani values were low, whereas Cameriere's was significantly negative; i.e., underestimation increases as age increases. Between left and right, any significant difference in age estimation in AlQahtani and Cameriere methods was not observed, but there were great variability and large effect for the Demirjian method. Comparing females and males, the statistical analysis showed no significant differences and quite small effects in the precision of the estimates for any of the methods. Finally, although significant differences were detected when comparing estimated values and age, small effects were revealed except for the Demirjian method which attained a medium effect and, therefore, less consistency of estimation. CONCLUSIONS Since it was not possible to determine the most reliable method for age estimation, a combined application of different age estimation methodologies is recommended to be use in the courts with relevant statistical data such as effect size.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess and compare age estimation on panoramic radiography using the Kvaal method and machine learning (ML). METHODS AND MATERIALS 554 panoramic radiographs were selected from a Brazilian practice. To estimate age using the Kvaal method, the following measurements were performed on the upper left central incisors and canines: tooth, pulp and root length; root and pulp width at three different levels: at the enamel-cementum junction (ECJ); midpoint between the enamel-cementum junction and; at the mid root level. For ML age estimation, radiomic, semantic and the radiomic-semantic attribute extractions were assessed. Nineteen semantic and 14 radiomic attributes and a single set of 33 semantic-radiomic attributes were extracted. Logistic Regression, Linear Regression, KNN, SVR, Decision Tree Reg, Random Forest Reg, Gradient Boost Reg e XG Boosting Reg were used for ML classification. For the Kvaal method, Mann-Whitney test, Spearman correlation coefficient, Student's t-test and linear regression with its respective coefficient of determination were used to estimate age and to assess data variability. RESULTS Mean absolute error (MAE) and standard error estimate (SEE) were assessed. For the Kvaal method, upper incisors presented higher precision than canines (R²: 0.335, SSE: 7.108). Males presented better MAE and SEE values (5.29,6.96) than females (5.69,7.37). The radiomic-semantic attributes presented superior precision (MAE: 4.77) than the radiomic and semantic (MAE: 5.23) attributes. The XG Boosting Reg classifier performed better than the other six assessed classifiers (MAE: 4.65). ML (MAE: 4.77 presented higher age estimation precision than the Kvaal method (MAE: 5.68). CONCLUSION The use of ML on panoramic radiographs can improve age estimation.

Abstract
Background: The estimation of an individual’s age is a fundamental component of forensic odontology. Literary reports found that the efficiency of Cameriere methodology for age estimation varied among many population groups. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the applicability of the Cameriere methods to a select South African population of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted on 840 digital panoramic radiographs that met the inclusion criteria. Dental maturity was determined through the morphometric analysis of the seven left permanent mandibular and maxillary teeth in accordance with Cameriere et al. (2006). Moreover, the dental age was also calculated using the South African Black Bayesian formulae of the Cameriere method by Angelakopoulos et al. (2019). The paired sample t-test or Wilcoxon’s signed rank test assessed the significant difference between the chronological age and estimated dental age for the various formulae. A p-value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: The Cameriere et al. (2006) Italian formula and the South African Black Bayesian formulae of the Cameriere method by Angelakopoulos et al. (2019) underestimated and overestimated age in the South African Black and Indian population groups of the KZN province, respectively. Therefore, the authors generated a novel population-specific regression formulae (including and excluding third molars) using “step-wise regression analysis” and a “best-fit model” for the South African Black and Indian population groups of KZN. Conclusion: This study recommends that the population-specific formulae generated in this study be utilized in the KZN population to improve the accuracy of dental age estimation within this region.

Abstract
Dental caries is a chronic disease that can be influenced by a multitude of factors. Poor oral hygiene and unhealthy eating habits are the most incriminating factors in the onset of dental caries, but age has been proven to impact the disease. The aim of this study was to find correlations between age and the evolution of dental caries in the first permanent molars in children. The retrospective study was conducted based on 400 panoramic radiographs, belonging to Romanian children between the ages of 6 and 14 years. All first permanent molars were investigated, and the carious lesions were classified according to their depth. The chronological age was calculated by subtracting the patient's date of birth from the date when the radiograph was performed, while for the assessment of dental age, the Demirjian method was used. The gender of the patients did not significantly influence the number of superficial, medium, and deep carious lesions. Most of the identified carious lesions were superficial. Regarding correlations between age and dental caries, there was an association between the decrease in the chronological age and the increase in the number of superficial carious lesions on the first permanent molars and also an association between the increase in the chronological age or dental age and the increase in the number of medium and deep carious lesions on the first permanent molars. Age can impact the development of dental caries in first permanent molars.

Abstract
The assessment of an individual's development by investigating the skeletal maturity is of much use in various medical fields. Skeletal maturity can be estimated by evaluating the morphology of the cervical vertebrae. The aim of this study was to conduct comparisons of the chronological age in different bone development stages. The retrospective study was conducted based on lateral cephalometric radiographs belonging to patients with ages between 6 and 15.9 years, from Romania. For the assessment of skeletal maturity, the Cervical Vertebral Maturation (CVM) method was used. In total, 356 radiographs were selected, but after applying the exclusion criteria, 252 radiographs remained in the study (178 girls and 74 boys). Different mean chronological age values were obtained for the general sample, as well as for the two genders. The chronological age started to be significantly different at the CS4 stage. Patients with CS4, CS5, and CS6 stages had a significantly higher chronological age compared to patients with CS1, CS2, and CS3 stages. It was noted that patients with CS1 and CS2 stages were more frequently boys, while patients with the CS5 stage were more frequently girls.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of Cameriere’s European formula for age estimation in children in South China and to adapt the formula to establish a more suitable formula for these children. Moreover, the performance of dental age estimation based on Cameriere’s method combining the developmental information of permanent teeth (PT) and third molar (TM) was also analysed. Orthopantomographs of 720 healthy children in Group A, and orthopantomographs of 320 children and 280 subadults in Group B were assessed. The samples of Group A were divided into training dataset 1 and test dataset 1, and the samples of Group B were also divided into training dataset 2 and test dataset 2. A South China-specific formula was established based on the training dataset 1, and the comparison of accuracy between the Cameriere’s European formula and the South China-specific formula was conducted with the test dataset 1. Additionally, a PT regression model, a TM regression model, and a combined regression model (PT + TM) were established based on the training dataset 2, and the performance of these three models were validated on the test dataset 2. The Cameriere’s European formula underestimated chronological age with a mean difference (ME) of −0.47 ± 1.11 years in males and −0.69 ± 1.19 years in females. However, the South China-specific formula underestimated chronological age, with a mean difference (ME) of −0.02 ± 0.71 years in males and −0.14 ± 0.73 years in females. Compared with PT model and TM model, the PT and TM combined model obtained the smallest root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.29 years in males and 0.93 years in females. In conclusion, the South China-specific formula was more suitable for assessing the dental age of children in South China, and the PT and TM combined model can improve the accuracy of dental age estimation in children.Key points Orthopantomographs of 720 healthy children in Group A, and orthopantomographs of 320 children and 280 subadults in Group B were assessed.
