Abstract
Affective disorders promote poorer outcomes in hemodialysis patients. According to the presence or not of depression/anxiety in these patients, aims were to analyze differences in sociodemographic, clinical and/or psychological factors and to identify predictors. One hundred eighty-six hemodialysis patients were classified based on their depression/anxiety status. Basal characteristics showed differences between groups where mainly male sex (Depression: OR 0.2; Anxiety: OR 0.3) albumin (Depression: OR 0.1; Anxiety: OR 0.2) and calcium levels (Depression: OR 0.5; Anxiety: OR 0.4), impaired quality of life (Depression: OR 1.4; Anxiety: OR 1.2) and psychological inflexibility (Depression: OR 1.3; Anxiety: OR 1.2) were associated (all p < 0.01) to these mental conditions. Multivariate models showed that worse quality of life (OR 1.3; p < 0.001) predicted depression while marital status (with a partner; OR 0.3; p = 0.025) and albumin levels (OR 0.1; p = 0.027) were protective factors. Depression represented a risk factor for anxiety (OR 1.2; p = 0.001), although calcium levels (OR 0.5; p = 0.039) would protect this state. Interestingly, psychological inflexibility predicted both disorders (Depression: OR 1.2, p < 0.001 and Anxiety: OR 1.1; p = 0.002). Results highlight the relevance of well-trained multidisciplinary hemodialysis units to control the influence of these factors on the presence of depression/anxiety, and thus, their impact on the patients’ outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The researchers investigated the association of depression with treatment adherence, and examined the possible moderating roles of social support and of the physician-patient working alliance (PPWA) on treatment adherence, satisfaction with treatment, and quality of life. METHODS The current study sampled ninety-five patients with End Stage Renal Disease who were receiving outpatient hemodialysis (HD) treatment. RESULTS Findings indicated that higher levels of depression were significantly associated with lower ratings of adherence, quality of life, and social support. In contrast, higher levels of social support and of the PPWA were significantly associated with higher ratings of adherence, satisfaction with treatment, and quality of life. Analyses of moderation showed no effect for PPWA between depression and adherence, satisfaction, or quality of life; however, there was a significant moderation effect for social support. CONCLUSION There are mild but significant associations between PPWA and social support. Positive associations between the PPWA and social support on adherence, satisfaction, and quality of life indicate that each one, PPWA and social support, plays its own role on patients' experiences of and behavior in treatment. Affective social support significantly limits the negative influence of depression on adherence. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Assessment of depression and social support is essential in hemodialysis treatment.

Abstract
Objective: The progression of chronic kidney disease can directly affect patient's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Exercise training is a good option to reverse the impacts caused by the disease. To escape from the monotonous routine and stimulate further practice, the therapist should consider making physical activity more playful. Using videogames during exercise training is possible to rehabilitate the patient aiming for fun beyond the organic condition. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of exercise training combined with Virtual Reality (VR) in functionality and HRQoL of patients on hemodialysis. Materials and Methods: A randomized controlled study in which control group (n = 20) maintained only hemodialysis without any physical effort or intervention from the researchers and intervention group (n = 20) who performed endurance and strength physical exercises in combination with VR during hemodialysis for 12 weeks. All eligible patients underwent a familiarization of games and were evaluated by an investigator-blind for functional capacity, quality of life, and depressive symptoms. Functional capacity tests included walking speed, timed up and go (TUG), and Duke Activity Status Index (DASI). To evaluate a HRQoL, Kidney Disease and Quality-of-Life Short-Form (KDQOL-SF™, v. 1.3) was used and to investigate depressive symptoms, the Center for Epidemiological Scale-Depression. Paired sample t-tests were conducted to determine differences within each group. Repeated-measures analysis of variance (group vs. time) was used to assess group differences in our major outcomes. The level of significance was 5%. Results: The exercise improved functional capacity (TUG: P = 0.002, DASI: P < 0.001) and HRQoL in physical and specific domains: physical functioning (P = 0.047), role physical (P = 0.021), as well as in physical composite summary (P < 0.001) and effects of kidney disease (P = 0.013). There was no influence on depressive symptoms (P = 0.154). Conclusion: Physical training combined with VR improved functional capacity and some quality-of-life domains of hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined the effect of the eye movement desensitization and reprocessing intervention on depression and anxiety in patients undergoing hemodialysis. DESIGN AND METHODS In this randomized controlled trial, 90 patients were enrolled. The intervention group received six sessions of the eye movement desensitization and reprocessing intervention. Data were collected before and 2 weeks after the intervention using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. FINDINGS Measured levels of anxiety and depression were significantly reduced in the intervention group compared with preintervention levels and to the control group. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Nurses can use the eye movement desensitization and reprocessing intervention in clinical practice in combination with psychotropic drugs for the reduction of depression and anxiety in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Abstract
Most hemodialysis (HD) patients experience symptoms of depression, pain and fatigue that impair their health-related quality of life (HRQOL) significantly. These symptoms are associated with increased hospitalization and mortality, mediated by behavioral factors (e.g. non-adherence to medication and dialysis) and biological factors (e.g. inflammatory cytokines). Prior interventions to alleviate symptoms and improve HRQOL showed limited effectiveness in HD patients and their effect on bio-behavioral mediators is lacking evidence. It is imperative to improve patient-centered dialysis care and to address call from Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines for integration of symptom assessment and management in routine HD-care. Technology-Assisted stepped Collaborative Care (TĀCcare) is a multi-center randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 150 diverse HD patients from Pennsylvania and New Mexico, designed to compare the effectiveness of a 12-week stepped collaborative care intervention (cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT) with an attention control arm of technology-delivered health education. Collaborative care provides an integrated multi-disciplinary structured management plan. Furthermore, a stepped approach to pharmacotherapy and/or CBT allows for individualization of treatment according to patients' clinical status, preferences and treatment response. To simplify the delivery of CBT and to minimize patient and provider burden, we will use live video-conferencing with patients in dialysis units. We will examine the effect of these interventions on patient symptoms, HRQOL, treatment adherence and inflammatory biomarkers. This RCT tests a readily implementable intervention that can be integrated in routine HD-care and will generate novel and meaningful insights on strategies to alleviate common symptoms and improve HRQOL in HD.

Abstract
Depression in dialysis populations is affected by co-morbid diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and immune dysfunction, and it also includes high suicide risk and frequent hospitalizations. Depressive disorders have a close association with malnutrition and chronic inflammation, as well as with cognitive impairment. Impaired cognitive function may be manifested as low adherence to dialysis treatment, leading to malnutrition. Additionally, chronic pain and low quality of sleep lead to high rates of depressive symptoms in haemodialysis patients, while an untreated depression can cause sleep disturbances and increased mortality risk. Depression can also lead to sexual dysfunction and non-adherence, while unemployment can cause depressive disorders, due to patients' feelings of being a financial burden on their family. The present review provides a holistic approach to the factors affecting depression in haemodialysis, offering significant knowledge to renal professionals.
