Abstract
INTRODUCTION Leuconostoc spp. are facultatively anaerobic Gram-positive cocci involved in cases of hospital-acquired bacteremia, mainly in immunocompromised hosts. The available data is scarce due to its uncommon presentation. METHODS We describe all the episodes of Leuconostoc spp. bacteremia in a third level hospital in a 13-year period (2008-2021). RESULTS Four cases of clinically relevant bacteremia were detected. All cases were categorized as catheter-related. The following risk factors were found: previous glycopeptide therapy (75%), use of parenteral nutrition (100%) and cancer (75%). All isolates showed susceptibility to beta-lactams. Catheter removal was performed and wide spectrum antimicrobials were administered, with clinical response in all cases except one. DISCUSSION Apart from cancer and glycopeptide exposure, disruption of skin barrier and gastrointestinal conditions were identified as risk factors, as it was concordantly underlined in other case series. Susceptibility to beta-lactams is usually maintained. Catheter removal and administration of an active antibacterial therapy seem to be the best approach for Leuconostoc spp. catheter-related bacteremia.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that bacterial translocation may play an important role in worsening gastrointestinal injury during sepsis. However, the dynamics of specific microbiota components in intestinal tissues at different sepsis stages remain unclear. Rats receiving intraperitoneal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were sacrificed at 12 h and 48 h post-injection. Routine blood, serum cytokines, and microbiota in colon tissue, colonic contents, and lung tissue at different time points were assessed. Migratory microbial components in colonic tissue at 12 h and 48 h post-LPS were identified using source tracking, characteristic component identification, and abundance difference analyses. Colonic tissue microbiota changed dynamically over time after LPS injection, involving translocation of microbial components from colon contents and lung tissue at different time points. Bacteria migrating to colon tissue at 12 h sepsis were mainly from colonic contents, while those at 48 h were predominantly from the lung tissue. The migratory microbial components in colon tissue were widely associated with blood indicators and colonizing genus abundance and microbiota functionality in colon tissue. In this study, the temporal dynamics of bacterial translocation from various sources into colon tissues at different sepsis progression stages were characterized for the first time, and the species composition of these migrating microbes was delineated. These bacterial migrants may contribute to the pathophysiological processes in sepsis through direct interactions or indirectly by modulating colonic microbiota community structure and function.

Abstract
Streptococci and enterococci are significant opportunistic pathogens in epidemiology and infectious medicine. High genetic and taxonomic similarities and several reclassifications within genera are the most challenging in species identification. The aim of this study was to identify Streptococcus and Enterococcus species using genetic and phenotypic methods and to determine the most discriminatory identification method. Thirty strains recovered from clinical samples representing 15 streptococcal species, five enterococcal species, and four nonstreptococcal species were subjected to bacterial identification by the Vitek® 2 system and Sanger-based sequencing methods targeting the 16S rRNA, sodA, tuf, rpoB, and recA genes. Phenotypic methods allowed the identification of 10 streptococcal strains, five enterococcal strains, and four nonstreptococcal strains (Leuconostoc, Granulicatella, and Globicatella genera). The combination of sequencing methods allowed the identification of 21 streptococcal strains, five enterococcal strains, and four nonstreptococcal strains. The 16S rRNA and rpoB genes had the highest identification potential. Only a combination of several molecular methods was sufficient for unambiguous confirmation of species identity. This study will be useful for comparison of several identification methods, both those used as a first choice in routine microbiology and those used for final confirmation.

Abstract
Infectious diseases caused by bacteria that can be transmitted via food, livestock and humans are always a concern to the public, as majority of them may cause severe illnesses and death. Antibacterial agents have been investigated for the treatment of bacterial infections. Antibiotics are the most successful antibacterial agents that have been used widely for decades to ease human pain caused by bacterial infections. Nevertheless, the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has raised awareness amongst public about the downside of using antibiotics. The threat of antibiotic resistance to global health, food security and development has been emphasized by the World Health Organization (WHO), and research studies have been focused on alternative antimicrobial agents. Bacteriocin, a natural antimicrobial peptide, has been chosen to replace antibiotics for its application in food preservation and infectious disease treatment for livestock and humans, as it is less toxic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Use of tigecycline in treating MDR Acinetobacter baumannii (MDRAB) remains controversial. OBJECTIVES To comprehensively assess the safety and efficacy of tigecycline in pneumonia caused by Acinetobacter baumannii. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane library databases were searched up to 12 March 2019. Studies were included if they compared tigecycline-based regimens with other antibiotic regimens for treating AB pulmonary infections and we pooled the clinical outcomes, microbiological response, adverse events or mortality. RESULTS One prospective study and nine retrospective studies were included in this meta-analysis. The results showed similar clinical cure rates (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 0.60-1.81; P = 0.89) and mortality rates (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 0.65-1.89; P = 0.71) comparing tigecycline groups with the control groups. However, a significantly lower microbiological eradication rate was found in the tigecycline groups (OR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.27-0.66; P = 0.0001). Incidence of nephrotoxicity in tigecycline-based regimens was significantly lower than in colistin-based regimens (OR = 0.34, 95% CI = 0.16-0.74, I2 = 35%, P = 0.006). There were no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) included; incomplete safety data and regional bias caused by the majority of the studies originating in China are the main limitations of this meta-analysis. CONCLUSIONS Tigecycline can be used for treating MDRAB pulmonary infections owing to efficacy similar to that of other antibiotics. Moreover, tigecycline did not show a higher risk of mortality. Considering the lower microbiological eradication rate for tigecycline, which is likely to induce antimicrobial resistance, well-designed RCTs for high-dose tigecycline in treating pneumonia caused by AB are still needed.

Abstract
Leuconostoc lactis is a glycopeptide-resistant, gram-positive, facultative anaerobic coccus isolated from dairy products, whereas Staphylococcus nepalensis is coagulase-negative coccus that has not been identified as human pathogen. We report an instructive case of L. lactis and S. nepalensis bacteremia in a 71-year-old man who experienced Boerhaave syndrome after a meal.

Abstract
Antibiotic-resistant infections remain to be a major issue for all over the world. Although appropriate diagnosis and rapid treatment initiation are crucially important particularly in immunocompromised patients, selection of antibiotics without identification of causative bacteria is often challenging. A 44-year-old woman with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) under myelosuppression suffered from teicoplanin-resistant gram-positive cocci bacteremia. Taking severe neutropenia due to chemotherapy and glycopeptide-resistance into account, teicoplanin was empirically substituted with daptomycin, which led to prompt defervescence. This microorganism later turned out to be Leuconostoc lactis (L. Lactis), and daptmycin was continued to use based on antimicrobial susceptibility tests. As a result, empiric use of daptomycin successfully controlled glycopeptide-resistant gram-positive cocci bacteremia under neutropenia. This is the first report of daptomycin treatment for L. lactis bacteremia in a patient with AML under neutropenia. Our findings suggest that daptomycin would be a suitable treatment option for glycopeptide-resistant gram-positive cocci bloodstream infections, especially in myelosuppressive patients.

Abstract
Leuconostoc species are vancomycin-resistant Gram-positive cocci. Infections due to Leuconostoc species have been reported in various immunocompromised patients, but little is known about such infection in patients with hematologic malignancies. We report a case of Leuconostoc infection in a 44-year-old woman with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The patient developed a high fever despite antimicrobial therapy with doripenem after induction chemotherapy. After an isolate from blood cultures was identified as L. pseudomesenteroides, we changed the antibiotics to piperacillin-tazobactam and gentamicin, after which the patient recovered from the infection. Physicians should be aware of Leuconostoc species as causative pathogen if they encounter Gram-positive cocci bacteremia resistant to standard antibiotics such as vancomycin and teicoplanin, especially in patients with hematologic malignancies.
