A model of collaboration for the implementation of problem-based learning in nursing education in South Africa

The contribution of interprofessional education in developing competent undergraduate nursing students: integrative literature review

BACKGROUND

Effective interprofessional team collaboration is one of the necessary domains for successful interprofessional collaborative practices in healthcare (IPCP), which is crucial for the delivery of safe and quality healthcare services. Therefore, understanding the contribution of interprofessional education in nursing students is vital to improving collaboration practices in nursing students, in preparation for the dynamics that await after registration in practice amongst the interprofessional team. Thus, the aim of the study was to summarise the contribution of interprofessional education in nursing education in developing competent undergraduate nursing students.

DESIGN

The integrative literature review design as described by Whittemore and Knafl was adopted for the review. The review consists of five steps, namely, problem identification, literature search, data analysis, data interpretation, and the last step was data presentation. Three databases were searched for the articles, namely CINHAL, Scopus, and Science Direct. Articles were retrieved using Search terms such as "Competence," "Contribution,", "Development," "Interprofessional education" and "Undergraduate nursing students" retrieved Articles published between 2018 and 2022 were selected.

RESULTS

Three themes emerged from the review, namely the promotion of patient safety in nursing practice, the socialisation of nursing students in interprofessional collaboration, and the promotion of the development of professional identity.

CONCLUSION

This study is the first step in determining the contributions of early interprofessional education to nursing education. It could set the stage for further studies that examine strategies the undergraduate nursing curriculum can adopt and develop sound interprofessional competencies that promote patient safety and quality healthcare by nursing students.

IMPACT

The developers of the nursing curriculum and nursing educators can use the results in developing a curriculum that includes interprofessional education with the aim of improving the quality of teaching and learning that advances competent and safe nursing students.

Advancing sexual and reproductive health outcomes in rural schools with the use of a sexuality education enhancement model: learners' perspectives

Despite evidence-based proof that sexuality education enhances school-going adolescents' sexual and reproductive health, the high number of teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, among young people in the rural areas of South Africa suggests that the school-based sexuality education programme in the rural areas might have less influence on learners due to various contextual factors in these settings. This phenomenological study used nine focus group interviews to explore the experiences of 84 school-going adolescents regarding sexuality education offered in their schools, located in the rural areas of the King Cetshwayo District, in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. The participants were purposively sampled and the transcribed data from the interviews were thematically analysed. The study revealed that the sexuality information provided to learners did not improve their motivation or encourage behaviour to act on the information provided. Additionally, the results highlighted environmental factors in the research setting that influenced the effectiveness of the sexuality education programme. To enhance its effectiveness, a sexuality education enhancement model was developed using elements of the systems theory and modified information-motivation-behavioural skills model. The model identifies the input resources needed to address issues of information, motivation and skills as well as the influencing environmental factors.

Multidimensional context of technical nursing education: triangulation of meanings attributed by teachers

OBJECTIVE

To unveil and discuss the meanings attributed by teachers to the teacher-student relationship in the multidimensional context of technical nursing education.

METHOD

Qualitative research, supported by the representational theory of meaning, carried out with nine nurses who teach the technical nursing course at a technical school linked to a federal university in the northeastern region of Brazil.

RESULTS

The following meanings were revealed: student profile; lack of preparation and financial resources; reduction in performance and even course interruption; students' disinterest and resistance; academic support and qualified structure; opportunity for grants; teachers' dedication and holistic view; respect, ethics, and interactivity; concern with student learning and performance, and heterogeneous group.

CONCLUSION

Social and financial difficulties and students' disinterest are the limitations that most hinder teaching effectiveness. On the other hand, the teachers' holistic view, dedication, support, and the availability of resources and academic support are the main multidimensional characteristics of living in this scenario.

Contexto multidimensional do ensino técnico de enfermagem: triangulação de significados atribuídos por docentes

RESUMO Objetivo: Desvelar e discutir os significados atribuídos por docentes à relação entre professor e aluno no contexto multidimensional do ensino técnico de enfermagem. Método: Pesquisa qualitativa, apoiada na teoria representacional do significado, realizada com nove enfermeiros docentes do curso técnico em enfermagem de um colégio técnico vinculado a uma universidade federal da região nordeste do Brasil. Resultados: Foram desvelados os significados: perfil dos alunos; falta de preparo e de recursos financeiros; queda do rendimento e até interrupção da formação; desinteresse e resistência dos alunos; suporte acadêmico e estrutura qualificada; oportunidade de bolsas de auxílio; dedicação e olhar holístico dos docentes; respeito, ética e interatividade; preocupação com o aprendizado e desempenho do estudante, e grupo heterogêneo. Conclusão: Dificuldades sociais, financeiras e o desinteresse estudantil são as limitações que mais dificultam a efetividade do ensino. Por outro lado, o olhar holístico, a dedicação, o apoio dos docentes e a disponibilidade de recursos e suporte acadêmico são as principais características multidimensionais da vivência nesse cenário.

A quasi-experimental study of specialized training on the clinical decision-making skills and social problem-solving abilities of nursing students

Background: In Asian countries, clinical practice places little emphasis on developing the clinical decision-making skills and social problem-solving abilities of nursing students.Objective: This study explored whether a 3-months-in-1-unit training program improved nursing students' clinical decision-making skills and social problem-solving abilities compared to the 1-month-in-1-unit rotation program.Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted. A 3-months-in-1-unit training program was conducted in the intervention group (n = 77), rountine1-month-in-1-unit rotation was conducted in the control group (n = 73). Clinical decision-making skills and problem-solving abilities were measured using the Chinese version of the Clinical Decision-Making Nursing Scale and the Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised.Results: Nursing students in the intervention group scored higher clinical decision-making skills (t = 7.677, p < 0.05), positive problem orientation (t = 18.359, p < 0.05), negative problem orientation (t = -3.711, p < 0.05), and rational problem-solving (t = 2.312, p < 0.05) than the control group.Conclusions: The 3-months-in-1-unit specialized training program had a significant positive impact on students' clinical decision-making skills and social problem-solving abilities.
