Retrospective analysis of the clinical and radiological profile of few cases of synovial osteochondromatosis with a literature review

Synovial osteochondromatosis (SOC) is a rare benign neoplasm. It is caused by the metaplasia of the synovium into the bone. The knee, hip, elbow, shoulder, and ankle are the common sites. Our objective was to retrospectively assess the clinical and radiological features of a few cases of SOC resembling some rheumatological conditions and describe it along with a literature review. A retrospective analysis of the clinical and radiological features of a few cases of SOC mimicking some rheumatological conditions was performed. There were 4 cases: 3 adult men and a young boy. Three cases presented in the elbow and 1 case in the hip. There was a case mimicking osteoarthritis of the elbow in a young individual, another case presented like myositis ossificans of the elbow, and another case was similar to neuropathic arthritis of the elbow. The case in the hip presented as painful limping in the child. SOC can sometimes mimic various conditions affecting the synovial joints. A careful evaluation of the clinical and radiological features can be helpful in the correct diagnosis.

Rheumatoid subacromial-subdeltoid bursitis with rice bodies: A case report

Subacromial-subdeltoid bursitis of a shoulder with rice bodies is relatively uncommon. The understanding of the pathogenesis of rice body formation is yet approximate only but some clinical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculous arthritis, seronegative inflammatory arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are related to it. We describe a case of a 44 years old female with subacromial-subdeltoid bursitis of her right shoulder with numerous rice bodies' formation as a presenting feature of rheumatoid arthritis. She underwent subacromial and subdeltoid bursectomy with the removal of rice bodies and had immediate improvement of symptoms.

Giant extra-articular synovial osteochondromatosis of the left proximal thigh: A case report

Extra-articular synovial osteochondromatosis is a rare disease. The present study describes the case of a 46-year-old female who suffered from extra-articular synovial osteochondromatosis of the left proximal thigh with limited hip movement. The patient underwent a total tumor resection and recovered well. The tumor was 15×14×5 cm³ in size and located in the muscle gap. After a 3-month follow-up, the patient's left hip motion was improved and a computed tomography scan demonstrated no evidence of recurrence. However, the long-term efficacy of this procedure requires continuous observation of the patient. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of a giant extra-articular synovial osteochondromatosis of the proximal thigh muscle gap.

Synovial osteochondromatosis in the subacromial bursa mimicking calcific tendinitis: sonographic diagnosis

Synovial osteochondromatosis is an idiopathic benign metaplasia of the synovial membrane rarely found in an extra-articular bursa. We describe the case of a 55-year-old woman with synovial osteochondromatosis in the subacromial bursa mimicking calcific tendinitis. Plain radiographs showed a radiopaque mass over the middle facet of the greater tuberosity, suggesting calcific tendinitis. Sonography, however, showed a loose body in the subacromial bursa, and no evidence of calcification inside the rotator cuff.

Giant extra-articular synovial osteochondromatosis of the sinus tarsi: a case report

A 32-year-old male presented with painful swelling of the sinus tarsi that occurred during daily activities. Diagnostic imaging suggested the presence of a large synovial osteochondromatosis that blocked subtalar motion with deformity of the adjacent bone. The large bony mass was excised, and normal subtalar motion was achieved.
