Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Litsea glaucescens K. (Lauraceae) is a small tree from the Mexican and Central American temperate forests, named as "Laurel". Its aromatic leaves are ordinarily consumed as condiments, but also are important in Mexican Traditional Medicine, and among the most important non wood forest products in this area. The leaves are currently used in a decoction for the relief of sadness by the Mazahua ethnic group. Interestingly, "Laurel" has a long history. It was named as "Ehecapahtli" (wind medicine) in pre-Columbian times and applied to heal maladies correlated to the Central Nervous System, among them depression, according to botanical texts written in the American Continent almost five centuries ago. AIM OF THE STUDY Depression is the first cause of incapacity in the world, and society demands alternative treatments, including aromatherapy. We have previously demonstrated the antidepressant-like activity of L. glaucescens leaves' essential oil (LEO), as well as their monoterpenes linalool, and beta-pinene by intraperitoneal route in a mice behavioral model. Here we now examined if LEO and linalool exhibit this property and anxiolytic activity when administered to mice by inhalation. We also investigated if these effects occur by BDNF pathway activation in the brain. MATERIALS AND METHODS The LEO was prepared by distillation with water steam and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The monoterpenes linalool, eucalyptol and β-pinene were identified and quantified. Antidepressant type properties were determined with the Forced Swim Test (FST) on mice previously exposed to LEO or linalool in an inhalation chamber. The spontaneous locomotor activity and the sedative effect were assessed with the Open Field Test (OFT), and the Exploratory Cylinder (EC), respectively. The anxiolytic properties were investigated with the Elevated Plus Maze Apparatus (EPM) and the Hole Board Test (HBT). All experiments were video documented. The mice were subjected to euthanasia, and the brain hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were dissected. RESULTS The L. glaucescens essential oil (LEO) contains 31 compounds according to GC/MS, including eucalyptol, linalool and beta-pinene. The LEO has anxiolytic effect by inhalation in mice, as well as linalool, and β-pinene, as indicated by OFT and EC tests. The LEO and imipramine have antidepressant like activity in mice as revealed by the FST; however, linalool and ketamine treatments didn't modify the time of immobility. The BDNF was increased in FST in mice treated with LEO in both areas of the brain as revealed by Western blot; but did not decrease the level of corticosterone in plasma. The OFT indicated that LEO and imipramine didn't reduce the spontaneous motor activity, while linalool and ketamine caused a significant decrease. CONCLUSION Here we report by the first time that L. glaucescens leaves essential oil has anxiolytic effect by inhalation in mice, as well as linalool, and β-pinene. This oil also maintains its antidepressant-like activity by this administration way, similarly to the previously determined intraperitoneally. Since inhalation is a common administration route for humans, our results suggest L. glaucescens essential oil deserve future investigation due to its potential application in aromatherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human's existence has become more stressful these days, most likely for the sake of improving one's lifestyle and fulfilling one's aspirations and needs. Depression is the most frequent neurological disorder, which affects millions of individuals worldwide. In clinical research, depression is the second most frequent chronic disease. A variety of herbal medications thought to have antidepressant-like effects have been reported in ancient pharmacopoeias from around the world. These provide several prospective chemicals that could be developed into modern mental medications while also causing no noticeable negative effects. OBJECTIVE The review is written to provide herbal treatment and comprehensive information about depression. METHODS Plants and plant formulations that were found effective in the treatment of depression are thoroughly reviewed. The antidepressant efficacies of medicinal plants, as well as their dosages, are investigated using experimental models. The review article contains 140 plants possessing antidepressant properties, 11 commercial formulations, and 25 active/isolated ingredients, as well as their chemical structure, which have been thoroughly reviewed with antidepressant activity after studying 283 references. RESULTS Literature revealed that a variety of medicinal plants are effective for the treatment of depression such as Hypericum perforatum, Catha edulis, Tinospora cordifolia, Curcuma longa, Ferula foetida, Rhodio larosea, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Crocus sativus, Ocimumba silicum and Embelica officinalis. CONCLUSION Potential compounds isolated from medicinal plants for the treatment of depressive disorders need to be established and herbal plant research could aid in this endeavour.

Abstract
Species of Cinnamomum exhibit excellent economic and medicinal value, and have found use in traditional medicine, are consumed as a spice, as well as being cultivated as landscape plants. Investigations into the pharmacological activities of the genus Cinnamomum revealed that it manifested a wide range of pharmacological properties including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and analgesic, antitumor, anti-diabetic and anti-obesity, immunoregulation, insecticidal and acaricidal, cardiovascular protective, cytoprotective, as well as neuroprotective properties both in vivo and in vitro. In the past five years, approximately 306 chemical constituents have been separated and identified from the genus Cinnamomum, covering 111 terpenes, 44 phenylpropanoids, 51 lignans, 17 flavonoids, 53 aromatic compounds, 17 aliphatic compounds, four coumarins, two steroids. This article highlights the traditional uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of the few studied taxa of Cinnamomum through searching for the pieces of literature both at home and abroad, which would provide a reference for the pharmaceutical research and clinical application of this genus.

Abstract
The present work was carried out to assess the Onosma bracteatum
anxiolytic and antidepressant properties. Swiss albino mice (male) were fed
orally with hydroalcoholic extract at different doses 50, 100, and 200 mg 1 hour
prior to test with the standard diazepam and fluoxetine. Anxiolytic and
antidepressant activities were evaluated by using open field, elevated plus
maze, force swimming, and tail suspension test. Results of open field test
showed an increase in number of line crossing as well as number of rearing in
dosage-dependent design. Although results of elevated plus maze test evidently
showed antianxiety effect of O bracteatum by increasing the
time spent in open arms along with decreasing the time spent in closed arms in
dosage-dependent way. For the evaluation of antidepressant effect, O
bracteatum diminished the immobility time and expanded mobility
time in forced swim model in dosage-dependent way. Likewise, O
bracteatum expanded time span of mobility along with diminished
immobility time in tail suspension method in dosage-dependent way. Outcome
demonstrated that plant at the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight showed significant
potential which was similar to that standard diazepam and fluoxetine. Hence,
O bracteatum may be used as potent natural
psychotherapeutic agent against the mental disorders.
