Abstract
PURPOSE To validate the quantitative assessment of metamorphopsia in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) using M-CHARTS by determining its correlation with subjective reporting of metamorphopsia with a validated metamorphopsia questionnaire (modified MeMoQ). METHODS The Research Ethics Board approved a prospective observational study carried out at St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada. Patients with primary, unilateral RRD and healthy controls were included. Metamorphopsia at 3 months was assessed with modified MeMoQ and M-CHARTS. RESULTS One hundred patients (50 with RRD, 50 controls) were included. Seventy percent (35/50) of the RRD group had metamorphopsia with M-CHARTS and 80% (40/50) with MeMoQ. The modified MeMoQ and total M-CHARTS scores were significantly higher in patients with RRD compared with controls ( P < 0.0001). Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was 0.934 in the RRD group. Horizontal, vertical, and total M-CHARTS scores were significantly correlated with MeMoQ scores (r s = 0.465, P = 0.0007; r s = 0.405, P = 0.004; r s = 0.475, P = 0.0005, respectively). M-CHARTS was 72.7% sensitive and 94.6% specific for detection of metamorphopsia (positive score ≥ 0.2), with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.801. A stronger correlation was found in patients who scored ≥0.2 on the M-CHARTS and reported metamorphopsia with the MeMoQ (r s = 0.454, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION The authors have validated M-CHARTS as a tool to quantitatively assess metamorphopsia in patients with RRD, which is significantly correlated with patient-reported outcomes using the MeMoQ. A total score of ≥0.2 with M-CHARTS was more strongly correlated with MeMoQ.

Abstract
PURPOSE To develop a novel system for quantifying metamorphopsia in patients with myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) and to explore the metamorphopsia pattern of MTM. DESIGN Observational, cross-sectional study. METHODS We designed a new system. RESULTS Of the 445 eyes tested, 188 (42.25%) were deemed by patients to have metamorphopsia impacting their daily lives while 257 (57.75%) were considered to have no metamorphopsia symptoms. The Amsler grid, M-CHARTS and METAVISION tests displayed sensitivities for metamorphopsia of 95.74%, 89.89% and 100%, respectively. The specificities of the Amsler grid, M-CHARTS and METAVISION tests are 100%. The metamorphopsia questionnaire and METAVISION scores were highly consistent (average intraclass correlation coefficient=0.951, p<0.001) and strongly correlated (R=0.879, p<0.001). The METAVISION score was highly correlated with the stages of MTM (R=0.837, p<0.001), whereas there was a moderate correlation between the M-CHARTS M-score and the stages of MTM (R=0.679, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Quantification of metamorphopsia is important and useful for MTM management. The METAVISION is a clinically applicable and comprehensive approach for quantifying metamorphopsia, which can be used in clinical settings.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the relationship between unilateral metamorphopsia, characterized by visual distortions in one eye, and impaired stereopsis. Methods Utilizing both near and distance measurements through advanced testing systems, including 4K smartphones and an active shutter three-dimensional system, we simulated varying degrees of unilateral metamorphopsia in 30 healthy young adults aged between 21 and 29 years. Two types of contour-based stereotest symbols, lines and squares, were developed. Distortions were classified into six distinct patterns, each further divided into eight grades of severity. Participants were tasked with identifying visual targets, and their stereothresholds were determined under different conditions of induced distortion. Stereopsis was measured within a range of 2.9 to 1.0 log arcsec, at 0.2 log arcsec intervals. Stereopsis changes under different distortion scenarios were analyzed using the generalized estimating equations, with a sequential Bonferroni adjustment applied for pairwise comparisons. Results A direct and quantifiable correlation was observed between the severity of metamorphopsia and reductions in stereopsis. As the degree of visual distortion increased, notably in both frequency and amplitude, there was a corresponding decline in stereopsis. This relationship held true in both near and distance measurements of stereopsis. Statistical analyses further reinforced these findings, highlighting a significant detrimental effect of distortion components on stereoacuity. Conclusions The findings highlight the clinical significance of understanding the interplay between unilateral metamorphopsia and stereopsis. Early interventions in conditions leading to metamorphopsia might be critical to maintaining optimal stereopsis.

Abstract
AIM Distorted vision (metamorphopsia) is a leading symptom in retinal disease and can be categorized with the app MacuFix. This prospective controlled pilot study examined the influence of the app MacuFix as a method to assess metamorphopsia on vision-related quality of life. METHODS Forty-five patients suffering from metamorphopsia in at least one eye were recruited for the study. Vision-related quality of life before and after 3 months of optional home monitoring using the app MacuFix were compared with the questionnaire National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire-25. RESULTS The 45 participants (18 women, 27 men) were, on average, 68 years old (SD ± 9.7) and had a mean best-corrected visual acuity of 0.6 (SD ± 0.25). Of 90 eyes, 18 revealed no maculopathy. Age-related macular degeneration existed in 52 eyes, epiretinal gliosis in 6, and macular hole in 1 eye. Macular edema was present in two eyes due to diabetes, four eyes due to uveitis, one eye after retinal venous thrombosis, four eyes because of an Irvine Gass syndrome, and two eyes caused by central serous thrombosis. After 3 months, 35 persons used the app for home monitoring, 8 persons applied the Amsler Grid, and 2 did not use any test. App users showed a highly significant improvement in vision-related quality of life in questions on mental health and concern about vision, and a significant improvement in performance, dejection, control, and embarrassing situations. CONCLUSION The results suggest that MacuFix can possibly ameliorate partial aspects of vision-related quality of life.

Abstract
In this study, the test-retest-reliability as one aspect of reliability of metamorphopsia measurements using a computer-based measuring method was determined in patients with macular diseases. Metamorphopsia amplitude, position, and area were quantified using AMD - A Metamorphopsia Detector software (app4eyes GmbH & Co. KG, Germany) in patients with diabetic, myopic, or uveitic macular edema, intermediate or neovascular age-associated macular degeneration, epiretinal membrane, vitelliform maculopathy, Irvine-Gass syndrome, or macular edema due to venous retinal occlusion. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated in order to determine the repeatability of two repeated measurements and was used as an indicator of the reliability of the measurements. In this study, metamorphopsia measurements were conducted on 36 eyes with macular diseases. Metamorphopsia measurements made using AMD - A Metamorphopsia Detector software were highly reliable and repeatable in patients with maculopathies. The intraclass correlation coefficient of all indices was excellent (0.95 - 0.97). For diseases of the vitreoretinal interface or macular diseases with intra- or subretinal edema, this metamorphopsia measurement represents a supplement for visual function testing in the clinic, as well as in clinical studies.

Abstract
Vitreous anteroposterior traction is an important factor that affects macular hole (MH) formation at the early stage, and vitreous tangential traction can lead to further hole expansion after hole formation. Recent studies have highlighted the significance of Müller cells for the pathogenesis of MH. Since the advent of MH treatment, success rates for MH closure have significantly improved, as has postoperative visual acuity. However, metamorphopsia, an initial and common symptom of MH, still exists. Metamorphopsia is significantly related to the deterioration of visual quality of life and can be used as an independent index to evaluate visual function before and after surgery. In MH patients, metamorphopsia has different manifestations representing different clinical implications. M-CHARTS, as a new means of inspection, can quantify the degrees of metamorphopsia, and with the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT), layer-by-layer scanning of the retinal structure has become possible. These methods enable detailed analysis of the connections between the degree of metamorphopsia and relevant OCT parameters. Preoperative OCT parameters can be used to evaluate the prognosis of the postoperative visual function of MH patients and are therefore of great significance in guiding the treatment of MH patients.

Abstract
Symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion (sVMA) is defined as visual loss secondary to foveal damage from vitreomacular traction (VMT) and includes isolated VMT, impending macular hole (MH), and full-thickness MH with persisting vitreous attachment. Management options include pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), intravitreal ocriplasmin, intravitreal gas injection or observation. This synthesis of the literature aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of intravitreal gas for sVMA. Articles describing patients with VMT or MH treated with intravitreal expansile gas were selected by systematic literature review using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Database of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) up to September 2016. The main outcomes at 1 month and final review were logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) visual acuity (VA), anatomical success (absence of both VMT and MH, without PPV) and adverse events (AEs). The intended comparator was observation. Nine of 106 identified articles were eligible, and none were randomized controlled trials. The mean VA of 91 eyes improved from 0.55 (Snellen equivalent 6/21) to 0.48 (6/18) logMAR at 1 month and to 0.35 (6/13) logMAR at final review. The mean VA at final review, prior to a vitrectomy, was 0.42 (6/16). Anatomic success was 48% at 1 month and 57% at final review. The reported AEs comprised retinal detachment in two highly myopic eyes. Intravitreal gas injection can relieve sVMA. Larger controlled studies are needed to determine safety and efficacy relative to observation, ocriplasmin, or vitrectomy.
