Abstract
Ricinodendron heudelotii is a plant of the Euphorbiaceae family, used in traditional medicine to treat numerous diseases, including high blood pressure. The aim of this study is to evaluate the antioxidant and vasorelaxant effects of the aqueous extract of the stem bark of R. heudelotii. The pharmacological studies were carried out using the aqueous extract obtained by infusion. The antioxidant capacity of R. heudelotii was assessed by in vitro tests with DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenz-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), iron-reducing capacity (FRAP), and inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) release. In vitro studies, the aortic rings obtained from adult Wistar albino rats of both sexes were used to determine the vasorelaxant effects of the extract of R. heudelotii on the NO and prostacyclin (PGI2) pathways as well as its involvement on various potassium channels were determined on intact or naked fragments of rat aorta precontracted with phenylephrine (10-6 M) or KCl (60 mM). The aqueous extract of R. heudelotii exhibited a remarkable DPPH (EC50: 1.68 μg/mL) and ABTS (EC50: 106.30 μg/mL) and nitric oxide (53.71% inhibition at 1000 μg/mL) radical scavenging activities as well as reducing power (absorbance of 1.56 at 1000 μg/mL). The nitric oxide inhibitor, NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), and prostacyclin inhibitor, indomethacin, significantly attenuated the vasodilatory effect of R. heudelotii. Tetraethylammonium could not inhibit the vasodilatory effect of the extract, unlike glibenclamide and barium chloride. Ricinodendron heudelotii extract possesses antioxidant properties and vasorelaxing effect linked to endothelium-related factors, and this relaxation was partially mediated mainly through the inhibition of Kir and KATP channels.

Abstract
Evidence suggests there maybe an association among abnormal fasting blood glucose, hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia. In this study, we investigated whether abnormal fasting blood glucose correlates with hypertension in aging benign prostatic hyperplasia patients. Ultimately, 612 benign prostatic hyperplasia patients, including 230 hypertensive patients and 382 normotensive patients, were included. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the associations. The results indicated that neither impaired fasting glucose/high risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus nor high risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus were associated with an increased risk of hypertension. When patients were stratified based on the severity of their hypertension, similar results were obtained (all P> 0.05). After adjusting for confounding factors, the nonsignificant tendencies for high risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose/high risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus to associate with hypertension persisted (all P> 0.05). Unlike earlier studies, the present study suggests that the level of fasting blood glucose may not be significantly related to hypertension in aging patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Increased Risk of Hypertension in Young Adults in Southwest China: Impact of the 2017 ACC/AHA High Blood Pressure Guideline. Curr Hypertens Rep 2019; 21:21. Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To examine the impact of the new 2017 ACC/AHA hypertension guideline on the prevalence of hypertension, its constituent ratio, and their associated factors in southwest China. RECENT FINDINGS A total of 14,220 permanent residents ≥ 18 years were enrolled in this survey. According to the 2017 ACC/AHA hypertension guideline, the hypertension prevalence was substantially increased (46.9% vs. 24.5%); consistent across different age and gender groups, while the hypertension awareness (23.8% vs. 45.6%); treatment (18.6% vs. 35.5%); control (2.3% vs. 11.2%); and control among treatment (9.6% vs. 24.0%) patients were decreased in southwest of China. In our cohort, 31.1% participants were newly diagnosed as hypertension. Young adults accounted considerable proportion in this newly diagnosed hypertension population. The proportion of young hypertensive individuals substantially increased, whereas those of the older hypertensive subjects decreased. Among the hypertensive subjects aged ≥ 65 years undergoing treatment, 90% of the elderly subjects were not eligible for hypertension control and 32.5% have systolic blood pressure control at 130-149 mmHg, and thus need to intensify antihypertensive treatment according to 2017 ACC/AHA hypertension guideline. Smoking, drinking, body fat percentage, and body mass index were considered the factors associated with hypertension according to the Chinese hypertension guideline but not in the 2017 ACC/AHA hypertension guideline. The adoption of the 2017 ACC/AHA hypertension guideline will substantially increase hypertension prevalence in southwest of China. The new definition of hypertension implies that more young adults will likely suffer from high cardiovascular risks, while additional one third of elder hypertensive subjects will likely need intensified antihypertension treatments.

Abstract
Objective: The population of elderly patients and the amount of geriatric anesthesia have been growing rapidly in China. Thus, understanding the morbidity and mortality associated with geriatric anesthesia in China is critical to the improvement of anesthesia quality and outcome. The aim of the review was to discuss the geriatric anesthesia-related morbidity and mortality in China, as well as to point out the future trend. Data Sources: Articles in this review were all searched from Wanfang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP, PubMed, and Web of Science databases, based on the reports originated in China from January 2011 to December 2016. Study Selection: A total of 57 studies were selected for further study, including 12 retrospective studies, 35 prospective studies, 3 meta-analyses, 4 reviews, 1 viewpoint, and 2 case reports. Of the total studies, 42 studies were in Chinese while 15 were in English. Results: The mortality and morbidity associated with geriatric anesthesia in China are not yet completely reported. Some factors have been recognized, while some are yet to be identified and confirmed. Several studies addressed postoperative cognitive dysfunction and postoperative delirium, whereas only a few studies can be found on renal complications. Thus, a nationwide registry is essential for geriatric anesthesia-associated adverse outcomes. The mortality associated with geriatric anesthesia in China should be reported promptly. In the future, the perspective of geriatric anesthesia needs to be expanded into perioperative geriatric medicine to improve the perioperative management strategy based on the postoperative outcome-directed concept transformation. Conclusions: Anesthesiologists should evaluate the physiological and medical status and focus on the prevention of potential complications in the perioperative setting with the goal to enhance elderly patients’ long-term well-being and survival quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension (HT) are major noncommunicable health problems in both developing and developed countries, including Thailand. Each year, a large amount of money is budgeted for treatment and care. Hill tribe people are a marginalized population in Thailand, and members of its elderly population are vulnerable to health problems due to language barriers, lifestyles, and daily dietary intake. METHODS An analytic cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of T2DM and HT and to assess the factors associated with T2DM and HT. The study populations were hill tribe elderly adults aged ≥ 60 years living in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. A simple random method was used to select the targeted hill tribe villages and participants into the study. A validated questionnaire, physical examination form, and 5-mL blood specimen were used as research instruments. Fasting plasma glucose and blood pressure were examined and used as outcome measurements. Chi-square tests and logistic regression were used for detecting the associations between variables at the significance level alpha=0.05. RESULTS In total, 793 participants participated in the study; 49.6% were male, and 51.7% were aged 60-69 years. A total of 71.5% were Buddhist, 93.8% were uneducated, 62.9% were unemployed, and 89 % earned an income of < 5,000 baht/month. The overall prevalence of T2DM and HT was 16.8% and 45.5%, respectively. Approximately 9.0% individuals had comorbidity of T2DM and HT. Members of the Lahu, Yao, Karen, and Lisu tribes had a greater odds of developing T2DM than did those of the Akha tribe. Being overweight, having a parental history of T2DM, and having high cholesterol were associated with T2DM development. In contrast, those who engaged in highly physical activities and exercise had lower odds of developing T2DM than did those who did not. Regarding HT, being female, having a high dietary salt intake, being overweight, and having a parental history of HT were associated with HT development among the hill tribe elderly populations. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of T2DH and HT among the hill tribe elderly populations is higher than that among the general Thai population. Public health interventions should focus on encouraging physical activity and reducing personal weight, dietary salt intake, and greasy food consumption among the hill tribe elderly.
