Laparoscopic resection of a leiomyoma of the seminal vesicle

A common tumor in an uncommon site: epithelioid Leiomyoma arising from the seminal vesicle—a case report

Background

Leiomyoma of the seminal vesicle is a rare leiomyoma characterized by the formation of benign leiomyomatous tissue within the seminal vesicle. Although histologically benign, excessive size can lead to urinary system disease if left untreated. Herein, we report a case of a seminal vesicle epithelioid leiomyoma.

Case presentation

A 36-year-old Chinese man sought medical attention at our hospital for urination pain and hemospermia. CT showed a 5.3 cm × 5.0 cm seminal vesicle mass with a mixed density in the right seminal vesicle. The gross specimen showed light yellow, gray, and white tissues, with softness and hemorrhage in some places. Histologically, it showed classic spindle cell proliferation, with spindle cells arranged in fascicles, and mitosis was rare. Immunohistochemistry showed frequent expression of smooth muscle markers, such as calponin, SMA, and desmin. A diagnosis of epithelioid leiomyoma was proposed according to the immunohistochemical findings and morphology. The patient did not receive adjuvant therapy. There was no evidence of tumor recurrence in the 10 months after surgery.

Conclusions

We report the first case of epithelioid leiomyoma in the seminal vesicle. This disease should be included in the differential diagnostic list of seminal vesicle tumors with epithelioid morphology.

Leiomyoma arising from the right seminal duct/seminal vesicle-Report of a rare case and review of the literature

We present a case of a patient with a large, symptomatic abdominal tumour, which finally could be classified as a leiomyoma arising from the right seminal duct/seminal vesicle. In computed tomography (CT) scan, it appeared as a 7.5 × 6.5 cm solid, supravesical mass. A cystoscopy as well as bilateral retrograde studies was normal, a transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsy and an ultrasound-guided transabdominal biopsy of the mass were inconclusive. Subsequently, we performed a tumour extirpation through a lower midline laparotomy. Histological examination showed a leiomyoma arising from the right seminal duct or seminal vesicle. In this article, we discuss clinical presentation, findings on imaging and management of this rare benign tumour and review the relevant literature where only 13 similar cases could be identified.

Lesions of the Seminal Vesicles and their MRI Characteristics

Over the past few decades, MRI of the prostate has made great strides in improving cancer detection and is being embraced by more clinicians each day. This article aims to review the imaging characteristics of common and uncommon, but consequential lesions involving the seminal vesicles (SV), as seen predominantly on MRI. Many of these findings are seen incidentally during imaging of the prostate. Anatomy and embryology of the SV will be described which will help illustrate the associations of abnormalities seen. Congenital, infectious, neoplastic, and tumor mimics will be explored in detail, with discussion on clinical presentation and treatment strategies.

[A case of leiomyoma of the seminal vesicle]

Leiomyoma of the seminal vesicle is a rare tumor with only scattered reports in the literature. We report a case of leiomyoma of the seminal vesicle. A 65-year-old man presented with lower abdominal discomfort. Abdominal computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass measuring 9.3 x 4.4 x 4.0 cm posterior to the seminal vesicle. The patient underwent ultrasound guided transrectal needle biopsy of the mass, and histological findings showed leiomyoma and no evidence of malignancy. To relieve persistent lower abdominal discomfort, the resection of the tumor was performed through a lower abdominal midline incision. The tumor was not adhered to surrounding tissue without the seminal vesicle and completely removed with a portion of the seminal vesicle. The mass weighing 115 g was histologically diagnosed as leiomyoma of the seminal vesicle with no evidence of malignancy. The symptom of lower abdominal discomfort promptly improved after the surgery, and the postoperative course was uneventful. The patient has been clinically free from the disease after three years of follow-up.

Leiomyoma of the seminal vesicles: laparoscopic excision

Leiomyoma of the seminal vesicles is an extremely rare type of benign tumor of the genitourinary system and can cause lower urinary tract symptoms. Despite their low incidence, these tumors can be identified with transrectal ultrasound of the seminal vesicles during prostate examination. The removal of these tumors is facilitated by a laparoscopic approach.

Leiomyoma of the seminal vesicle: a rare case

Leiomyomas though common benign tumors of smooth muscle cells are extremely rare in the male genitourinary tract. We present a case of an elderly male who presented with complaints suggestive of urinary bladder outlet obstruction since 1 year. His evaluation showed it due to a tumour arising from the left seminal vesicle. Excision of the tumor was done which was diagnosed on histopathology as leiomyoma. A brief case report and review of literature is being presented.

Laparoscopic treatment of a calcium fluorophosphate stone within a seminal vesicle cyst

Stones in the seminal vesicles are extremely rare. We present a 62-year-old patient with a stone within a seminal vesicle cyst, who was cured by laparoscopic treatment. The operative time was 80 min, and the estimated blood loss was 90 mL. Scanning electron microscope examination of the stone showed a compact crystal image externally and sparse spherical crystal structure in kernel. Composition of the stone was calcium fluorophosphate on X-ray diffractometer. The follow-up time was 15 months with no recurrence of cyst or stone. To our knowledge, this case is the first to describe laparoscopic removal of a stone within a seminal vesicle cyst, and the first to describe calcium fluorophosphate as the composition of seminal vesicle stones.
