Comparison of radiopacity of different composite resins

The radiographic evaluation of 11 different resin composites

Radiopacities of dental materials used in restorations are very important in making the radiographic diagnosis. Therefore, the aim of our study was to evaluate the radiopacity of five single-shade and six simplishade resin composites with digital technique. Five different single-shade (Charisma Topaz One, Omnichroma, Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Universal, Vittra APS Unique, ZenChroma) and six different simplishade resin composites (G-aenial A'CHORD, Essentia Universal, OptiShade, Estelite Asteria, Filtek Universal, Filtek Z250) were used. For each group, five disk-shaped resin composites of 1 mm and 2 mm thicknesses were prepared. As a control, tooth slices with 1 mm and 2 mm thicknesses and a 99.5% pure aluminum step-wedge were used. The samples, tooth slices, and a step-wedge were placed on a photostimulable phosphor plate. Digital radiographs were taken from 30 and 40 cm distances (70 kVp, 7 mA 0.28 ms). The images were analyzed using ImageJ software to measure the mean gray values. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22 package program and Kruskal-Wallis H Test (p < 0.05). The highest radiopacity was seen in Filtek Universal at both distances and thicknesses. Omnichroma had the lowest radiopacity in all parameters. All specimens showed higher radiopacity than dentin. Except for Omnichroma 1 and 2 mm thick, Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Universal 2 mm thick, samples showed higher radiopacities than enamel (p < 0.05). The restorative materials tested were found to be more radiopaque than dentin. The samples passed the International Organization for Standardization for radiopacity values. The radiopacity values were affected by thickness and type of materials.

Smart Monochromatic Composite: A Literature Review

Over the previous years of the 20th and 21st centuries, there has been a progression in the field of bonded esthetic restorations. At the present time, the inclination of dentists toward the smart monochromatic shade of composite is flourishing owing to the fact that it decreases the requirement of a range of composite shades, curtails the waste of unconsumed composite shades, lessens chair side interval, abolishes the shade selection, and decreases dependency on shade-selecting methods. Smart monochromatic composite is known to obtain the color of the adjacent tooth structure in which it is placed. Therefore, the current literature elucidates the several features of innovative and revolutionary monochromatic composites including color stability, mechanical and optical properties, and shade-matching capability that could have a positive impact potentially over other resin composites.

Strontium ranelate simultaneously improves the radiopacity and osteogenesis of calcium phosphate cement

In a minimally invasive surgery of osteoporotic fractures, high radiopacity is necessary to monitor the delivery and positioning of injectable cements and good osteogenesis is indispensable. In this work, strontium ranelate (SrR), an agent for treating osteoporosis, is firstly used as a radiopaque agent for calcium phosphate cement (CPC). The addition of SrR does not affect the hydration products of CPC, but prolonged the setting time and decreased the compressive strength. The injectability of the cement was higher than 85% when SrR content is more than 10 wt%. The radiopacity of CPC is significantly improved by SrR and higher than cortical bone when the content of SrR is more than 5 wt%. The concentration of Sr ions released from CPC is increased by the increasing content of SrR, which is among 17-1329 μM. Moreover, CPCs with SrR significantly promote the osteogenic differentiation of mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and inhibit the osteoclastogenic differentiation of RAW264.7 cells. Based on its good radiopacity and osteogenesis, suppressed osteoclastogenesis and appropriate physicochemical properties, the radiopaque CPC with more than 10 wt% SrR is prospective to be a promising biomaterial for osteoporotic fracture repairing in minimal invasive surgery.
