Contributions of Indian conservative dentists and endodontists to the Medline database during 1996-2009: A bibliometric analysis

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Effective Contribution of Indian Periodontists to Global Periodontal Research Advancement

Developed nations put a lot of emphasis on scientific research and produce an enormous volume of avant-garde papers in impactful journals. These publications could serve as the foundation for different policies or other designs. The researchers in this study aimed to use a quantitative bibliometric strategy to analyze the development of Indian periodontists' publishing patterns in the PubMed database up to October 31, 2022. Publications that could be accessed through the PubMed database as of the end of October 2022 were included in the bibliometric study. By using certain search terms on the PubMed search engine, studies were found. Dental, periodontal, gingival, gingivitis, periodontal, periodontitis, and dental implants were among the terms used to find this article. To evaluate articles that are specifically about India, a parallel search was conducted with the following phrases together with "India." Selected parameters were examined in all papers, whether they had or lacked abstracts. Seven studies were selected which were in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria of this study. According to the keyword search, India contributes an average of 5.65% of each keyword category to the PubMed database, since the total number of search results on PubMed for the seven keywords we entered was 1,037,584, and the same keywords when searched by adding the keyword "India" to the keyword generated a total of 58,624. Since the beginning of the last decade, India has recorded tremendous growth in all spheres of scientific literature publication, and the field of periodontics is no exception. Through the PubMed database, Indian periodontists have made a significant contribution to world literature, especially over the past 10 years, with the number of publications increasing nearly exponentially with each passing year.

Dentinal microcracks induced by endodontic procedures: A scientometric and bibliometric analysis

Background

Due to the large number of publications relating the occurrence of dental microcracks to endodontic procedures, this bibliometric study evaluated the scientific pattern and trends in literature and provided an overview of scientific production in this context.

Aim

To analyze, quantify, and characterize the scientific production and trends of published articles evaluating dentinal microcracks formation after endodontic treatment procedures between 2010 and 2020 using bibliometric indicators.

Materials and Methods

Published articles were found by the search in the Medline (PubMed) and Scopus database using the combination of the following keywords: Dentinal crack OR Dentinal Microcrack OR Crack formation OR Dentin Defect AND Endodontic treatment OR Root canal preparation OR Canal Preparation OR Root canal treatment OR endodontic procedures. The search was also conducted in the Journal of Endodontics and International Endodontic Journal. After inclusion and exclusion criteria application, data from all studies included were collected.

Results

Among the 556 results after the search, 45 studies were included and analyzed in this bibliometry. No trend was observed in terms of the increasing number of articles over time. Most of them used an in vitro design, compared the effect of different endodontic techniques/systems for root canal instrumentation on dentinal microcracks formation, and were conducted in Turkey, Brazil, and India. Journal of Endodontics and International Endodontic Journal were the main journals with a higher number of articles published. Interestingly, studies conducted with some funding did not lead to higher citation numbers. Moreover, a relevant proportion of studies did not consider the inclusion of control groups, baseline evaluation, or statistical analysis. Micro-CT was the main technique used to evaluate microcrack presence.

Conclusion

Microcrack formation after the use of different endodontic techniques/systems has been constantly evaluated in the literature. There is a pattern of methodologies used, which may explain the concentration of these studies in specific journals and countries.

The Contribution of Indian Endodontists in Rotary Endodontics to Pubmed Database, from 2000-2017

AIM:

This study aimed at assessing the trends of publications of Indian Endodontists in the field of rotary Endodontics in the PubMed database from 2000-2017.

METHODS:

The date of publication was set from 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2017, wherein keywords entered in the advanced search were “Indian” AND “Dental” AND “Rotary Endodontics”. From the collected articles the following criteria were noted: year of publication, the name of the journal, status of the journal, name of the first author, state of origin and the rotary Endodontic file system used.

RESULTS:

All data was subjected for statistical analysis by SPSS software version 16. The data were subjected to chi-square test, and a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) was obtained in the inter-6 yearly interval starting from 2000-2017; in the status of the journal; the state of origin and in the generation of rotary files which were published during the study period.

CONCLUSION:

The plethora of publications by Indian Conservative Dentists and Endodontists is on the rise, and with the advent of better technology a greater interest in the mechanics and properties of these rotary file systems has invoked greater research work.

Clinical trials in dentistry in India: Analysis from trial registry

Introduction:

Evidence-based practice requires clinical trials to be performed. In India, if any clinical trial has to be performed, it has to be registered with clinical trial registry of India. Studies have shown that the report of clinical trials is poor in dentistry. Hence, the present study has been conducted to assess the type and trends of clinical trials being undertaken in dentistry in India over a span of 6 years.

Methodology:

All the clinical trials which were registered with the Central Trial Registry of India (CTRI) (www.ctri.nic.in) from January 1, 2007 to March 3, 2014 were evaluated using the keyword “dental.” Following information were collected for each of the clinical trials obtained from the search; number of centres (single center/multicentric), type of the institution undertaking the research (government/private/combined), study (observational/interventional), study design (randomized/single blinded/double-blinded), type of health condition, type of participants (healthy/patients), sponsors (academia/commercial), phase of clinical trial (Phase 1/2/3/4), publication details (published/not published), whether it was a postgraduate thesis or not and prospective or retrospective registration of clinical trials, methodological quality (method of randomization, allocation concealment). Descriptive statistics was used for analysis of various categories. Trend analysis was done to assess the changes over a period of time.

Results:

The search yielded a total of 84 trials of which majority of them were single centered. Considering the study design more than half of the registered clinical trials were double-blinded (47/84 [56%]). With regard to the place of conducting a trial, most of the trials were planned to be performed in private hospitals (56/84 [66.7%]). Most (79/84, 94.1%) of the clinical trials were interventional while only 5/84 (5.9%) were observational. Majority (65/84, 77.4%) of the registered clinical trials were recruiting patients while the rest were being done in healthy participants. From 2011, some of the postgraduate thesis trials had also been registered (2011-8; 2012-8; 2013-13; 2014-6). Inadequacy in reporting the method of randomization and allocation concealment was observed in 37/67 (55.2%) and 31/67 (46.2%) clinical trials respectively. A considerable number of postgraduate theses was also registered with CTRI in dentistry and majority of the clinical trials despite being completed are not yet published.

Conclusion:

The number of clinical trials in dentistry are low in India, and more focus should be placed by dental investigators regarding the reporting standards. Furthermore, researchers and trial sponsors should aim at publication of the research findings so that it is made publically available for use. A clear-cut need exists for an increase in both the quantity and quality of clinical trials in dentistry.

The dental specialties related articles published in Medical Journal Armed Forces India from 2000 to 2014 over a 15-year period

There is a paucity of information about the dental specialties related articles published in the Medical Journal Armed Forces India (MJAFI). This study aimed to audit the dental specialities related articles published in MJAFI from 2000 to 2014 over a 15-year period. Bibliometric analysis of sixty issues of MJAFI from 2000 to 2014 were performed using web-based search. The articles published were analyzed for type of article and topic of individual dental specialities. The articles published were also evaluated to identify whether the study was an Armed Forces Medical Research Committee Project or funded research project or not. Out of the total 118 published articles related to dental specialities, original articles (55) and case reports (49) contribute the major share. The highest number of dental specialities related articles was published in 2009 with 16, followed by 2010 with 13 and 2011 with 11 and the least published year was 2013 with 3 articles. Regarding the relationship with dental specialities, the maximum number of published articles were related to oral medicine and radiology (56) followed by oral and maxillofacial surgery (49), orthodontics (23) and prosthodontics (17). Among the articles published in MJAFI, maxillofacial injuries (11) followed by orthodontic treatment (8) and craniofacial deformities (8) form the major attraction of the contributors. Among the 118 dental speciality articles, there were only 4 Armed Forces Medical Research Committee Project articles and 19 funded research project articles. An equal distribution of articles related to clinical dentistry and nonclinical dentistry is maintained for the MJAFI from 2000 to 2014 over a 15-year period.

Bibliometric analysis of journal of clinical and diagnostic research (dentistry section; 2007-2014)

BACKGROUND

The role of scientific journals in diffusion of data concerning researches in the field of Public Health Dentistry is of premier importance. Bibliometric analysis involves analysis of publications reflecting the type of research work.

AIM

The present study was conducted with an aim to determine the number and trends of published articles in Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research (JCDR) from Feb. 2007 to Oct.2014.

SETTINGS AND DESIGN

A retrospective observational study was conducted for JCDR.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

All issues of JCDR were electronically searched for the parameters : study design, area of interest of research, state /college where research was conducted, authorship pattern, source of articles published each year, changing study trends, disease under study and publication bias.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED

The data was organized and analyzed using software SPSS - version 21.0; descriptive statistics was used.

RESULTS

Bibliometric analysis was done for 601 articles of JCDR published from Feb. 2007 to Oct. 2014. The total number of articles published under Dentistry section have tremendously increased from mere 2 articles in 2007 to 328 articles in 2014.Majority of the study designs published in both the journal were case reports (42.6%) followed by cross sectional studies (24.8%). 96.3% of the articles were from India. Majority of the articles published were of multi authors (65.2%) and from Educational institutes (98.4%). The trends of the articles published indicated that the case reports/series formed the major bulk (others=59.1%) followed by research studies (21.3%).

CONCLUSION

It was concluded that most articles published were case reports followed by researches indicating an inclination towards better quality methodology. The SJR and the citation count of the articles published also indicated the quality of the scientific articles published.

Contribution of Indian pediatric dentists to scientific literature during 2002-2012: a bibliometric analysis

Introduction:

Bibliometric analysis of publications is necessary to enable clinicians to make evidence based sound clinical decisions. It will also help policy makers & institutions to frame their decisions and policies so as to improve the quality of dental research in India.

AIM:

The purpose of this study is to identify publication output as well as descriptively and quantitatively characterize the contribution of Indian pediatric dentists to scientific literature through publication trend analysis from 2002 to 2012.

Settings and design:

Cross sectional analytical study.

Material and method:

A bibliometric analysis of publications by Indian pediatric dentists during 2002 to 2012 was performed on data collected from PubMed – MEDLINE database. Only the first author’s affiliations were considered and the publications were categorized according to the following variables: year of publication, number of authors, state of origin, type of article, reach of journal and country of publication.

Results:

There were 817 articles by Indian pediatric dentists during the study period. Of all the articles 399 (48.8%) were original research, 377(46.1%) were case reports and 41 (5.0%) were reviews. The inter-annual variation between the reach, country of publication of the journal and type of articles is presented. The growth trend analysis was performed and predictions are presented.

Conclusion:

There has been an increase in the number of publications by Indian pediatric dentists and most of the published work comprises of original research. The potential use of this data is discussed.

Comparison of research productivity between metro and non-metro cities in a biomedical journal from India

BACKGROUND

The research productivity of a place depends on doctors, patients and available infrastructure to carry research activities.

AIMS

We aimed to study the publishing trends and research productivity of metro and non-metro cities in the Journal of the Association of Physi cians of India (JAPI).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Bibliometric analysis of research articles published in JAPI between 2000 and 2011was undertaken. The four types of articles (original articles including brief reports, case reports, correspondence and pictorial image) were studied for research productivity. They were analyzed according to subspecialty, publication times and type of research work from both places. Comparison between groups was done using Fisher exact and Mann-Whitney U test. Descriptive statistics were used and a P < 0.05 was considered significant.

RESULTS

Of a total of 2977 articles, 1798 were available for analysis. Metros published 46% (825/1798) and non-metros 54% (973/1798). Original articles and case reports constituted 3/4(th) of the published literature from both places. Pictorial images were seen more from non-metro cities (P = 0.03). Mumbai and Delhi were leading from the metros, whereas Varanasi and Chandigarh were leading from the non-metro places. Endocrinology, Neurology, Cardiology and Infectious Diseases constituted the top four subspecialties from both places. Neurology articles were published more from non-metros (P = 0.03). The timelines from submission to publication varied between 12 and 15 months, and were lesser for articles from the metros (P = 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Metros and non-metro cities are comparable in publishing trends and research productivity. Places with post-graduate institutes contribute majority of the research articles. Faster publication timelines from metros indicate better manuscript content and preparation.

Research methodology in Dentistry: Part I - The essentials and relevance of research

The need for scientific evidence should be the basis of clinical practice. The field of restorative dentistry and endodontics is evolving at a rapid pace, with the introduction of several materials, instruments, and equipments. However, there is minimal information of their relevance in clinical practice. On the one hand, material and laboratory research is critical, however; its translation into clinical practice is not being substantiated enough with clinical research. This four part review series focuses on methods to improve evidence-based practice, by improving methods to integrate laboratory and clinical research.
