Comparison of Ocular Monochromatic Higher-order Aberrations in Normal Refractive Surgery Candidates of Arab and South Asian Origin

Peripheral Monochromatic Aberrations in Young Adult Caucasian and East Asian Eyes

SIGNIFICANCE

Myopia prevalence rates differ between racial groups. If the growth of the eye is sensitive to differences in optical input, the difference in spherical aberration between East Asian and Caucasian eyes found in this study may be important in understanding myopia development.

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to determine differences in peripheral wavefront aberrations between two racial groups.

METHODS

Wavefront aberrations were measured using a COAS-HD aberrometer across the 42 × 32° central visual field on 37 right eyes of young adults (18 Caucasians, 19 East Asians; mean age 21.5 ± 2.4 years). The mean spherical equivalent refraction was -1.94 ± 1.63 diopters (D) with a range of -5.87 to +0.16 D. Effect of race and visual field position on refractions, individual Zernike aberration coefficients up to the fourth order, higher-order root-mean-square aberration, and total root-mean-square aberration were assessed by repeated-measures analysis of covariance.

RESULTS

Caucasians and East Asians had similar relative peripheral myopia across the visual field. All higher-order aberration coefficients were affected by visual field position. Race had no significant effect on any higher-order Zernike coefficient, but the difference in mean vertical coma coefficient (Equation is included in full-text article.)across the visual field (i.e., average of 38 field locations) approached significance, being less positive in Caucasians than in East Asians (P = .08). When correction was made for the Caucasian group being slightly less myopic than the East Asian group, spherical aberration coefficient (Equation is included in full-text article.)was less positive in Caucasians than in East Asians by 0.04 μm (P = .001). The rates of change of coma coefficients across the field were not affected by race.

CONCLUSIONS

Caucasians and East Asians had similar relative peripheral myopia, but with less positive spherical aberration coefficient in Caucasians than in East Asians. It remains to be determined whether aberrations have a role in the difference of myopia prevalence rates in different countries.

Evaluation of Corneal Higher-Order Aberrations by Scheimpflug-Placido Topography in Patients with Different Refractive Errors: A Retrospective Observational Study

Purpose

To report the characteristics of anterior and posterior corneal high-order aberrations in patients with different refractive errors.

Setting

This study was conducted at Sohag Refractive Center, Sohag, Egypt.

Design

This is a retrospective observational study.

Methods

This study evaluated 750 patients (750 eyes) who were seeking refractive surgery. The eyes were stratified into five groups (150 eyes/group) based on refractive error: mild-to-moderate myopia, high myopia, hyperopia, simple myopic astigmatism, and simple hypermetropic astigmatism. All patients were subjected to comprehensive ophthalmological examination including corneal topography and corneal aberrometry using the Scheimpflug–Placido topography (Sirius, CSO, Italy).

Results

Coma aberration was statistically significant when compared in all five groups (P=0.01). It was highest in the hypermetropia group (0.26 ± 0.12 μm) but lower in the moderate myopia, high myopia, myopic astigmatism, and hypermetropic astigmatism groups. Spherical aberration was lowest in the hypermetropia group and significantly different from that in the other groups. Trefoil was statistically insignificant when all groups were compared (P=0.062) but was highest in the myopic astigmatism group (0.24 ± 0.25 μm). Total RMS peaked in the hypermetropia group (0.99 ± 0.70).

Conclusions

In normal corneas and regular refractive errors, the cornea-induced high-order aberration was minimal, and all types of refractive errors were associated with certain types of high-order aberrations, with a significant increase in spherical aberration in the hypermetropia group.

Relationship between serum apolipoproteins levels and retinopathy risk in subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus

AIMS

Prognostic significance of apolipoproteins in diabetic retinopathy risk has not been well investigated. The aim of this study was to reveal the relationship between the risk of diabetic retinopathy and the levels of several apolipoproteins and their ratios in a 10-year prospective cohort.

METHODS

A total of 1023 diabetic patients without retinopathy were selected from a 10-year hospital-based diabetic cohort. In this cohort, all subjects had type 2 diabetes. Blood samples were obtained, and serum levels of several apolipoproteins were measured. In the follow-up period, diabetic retinopathy was diagnosed by two ophthalmologists through a series of ophthalmologic examinations. A Cox proportional hazard analysis was adopted to determine the relationship between the risk of diabetic retinopathy and the levels of several apolipoproteins and their ratios.

RESULTS

In the follow-up period, 315 diabetic patients were suffered from diabetic retinopathy, and the remaining 708 patients did not. Baseline serum level of apoAI ≥ 7.4 μmol/L was related to the decreased risk of diabetic retinopathy (HR 0.86, 95% CI 0.70-0.99). Baseline levels of apoCIII ≥ 6.3 μmol/L, apoE ≥ 1.1 μmol/L, apoCIII-to-apoAI ratio ≥ 0.9 and apoE-to-apoAI ratio ≥ 0.2 were associated with the increased risk of this complication (HR 1.25, 95% CI 1.04-1.49; HR 1.23, 95% CI 1.03-1.47; HR 1.34, 95% CI 1.11-1.60; HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.01-1.46).

CONCLUSION

Elevated level of apoAI might be a protective factor for diabetic retinopathy. Increased levels of apoCIII, apoE, apoCIII-to-apoAI and apoE-to-apoAI ratios might be risk factors for this complication.
