Squamous Papilloma on the Hard Palate: A Rare Clinical Entity

Squamous papilloma is a benign, exophytic, soft tissue tumour caused by the rapid proliferation of stratified squamous epithelium. It typically manifests in the oral cavity as a painless, soft, non-tender, pedunculated growth that resembles a cauliflower. This case report of squamous papilloma on the hard palate sheds light on the etiopathogenesis, types, clinical features, differential diagnosis, and management modalities.

Squamous Papilloma of the Soft Palate: A Case Report

Oral squamous papillomas (SPs) are benign masses commonly growing in the tongue, gingiva, uvula, lips, and palate. A case of an asymptomatic pedunculated squamous papilloma at the center of the soft palate is presented. Both surgical management and histopathologic analysis were conducted. The aim of this report is to stress the importance of early diagnosis and management of common benign oral lesions to prevent their transformation into malignancy.

Overview of common oral lesions

This article summarises common oral lesions that clinicians may face in everyday practice by categorising them by clinical presentation: ulcerated lesions, white or mixed white-red lesions, lumps and bumps, and pigmented lesions. The pathologies covered include recurrent aphthous stomatitis, herpes simplex virus, oral squamous cell carcinoma, geographic tongue, oral candidosis, oral lichen planus, pre-malignant disorders, pyogenic granuloma, mucocele and squamous cell papilloma, oral melanoma, hairy tongue and amalgam tattoo. The objective of this review is to improve clinician knowledge and confidence in assessing and managing common oral lesions presenting in the primary care setting.

Oral Papillomatosis: Its Relation with Human Papilloma Virus Infection and Local Immunity—An Update

Oral papilloma lesions may appear as a result of HPV infection, or not, and only special molecular methods could differentiate them. Low-risk and high-risk HPV types could induce oral HPV papillomatosis with different natural evolution, clearance and persistence mechanisms. The pathogenic mechanisms are based on the crosstalk between the oral epithelial and immune cells and this very efficient virus. HPV acts as a direct inducer in the process of transforming a benign lesion into a malignant one, the cancerization process being also debated in this paper. According to the degree of malignity, three types of papillomatous lesions can be described in the oral cavity: benign lesions, potential malign disorders and malignant lesions. The precise molecular diagnostic is important to identify the presence of various virus types and also the virus products responsible for its oncogenicity. An accurate diagnostic of oral papilloma can be established through a good knowledge of etiological and epidemiological factors, clinical examination and laboratory tests. This review intends to update the pathogenic mechanisms driving the macroscopic and histological features of oral papillomatosis having HPV infection as the main etiological factor, focusing on its interreference in the local immunity. In the absence of an accurate molecular diagnostic and knowledge of local immunological conditions, the therapeutic strategy could be difficult to decide.

HPV-positive oral papillomas in an adolescent-A diagnostic dilemma

Human papillomavirus oral papilloma is often sexually transmitted, but non-sexual modes of transmission should be considered, including autoinoculation from skin lesions. A patient-centered multimodality approach should be utilized in the pediatric population.

A case report of squamous papilloma of the hard palate in a pediatric patient

Oral squamous papillomas are benign proliferating lesions induced by human papillomavirus. These lesions are painless and slowly-growing masses. As an oral lesion, it raises concern because of its clinical appearance. These lesions commonly occur between age 30 and 50 years, and sometimes can occur before the age of 10 years. Oral squamous papilloma accounts for 8% of all oral tumors in children. Common site predilection for the lesion is the tongue and palate and may occur on any other surface of the oral cavity such as the uvula and vermilion of the lip. Here, we are presenting a case of squamous papilloma on the palate in a 9-year-old child.

Symptomatic oral squamous papilloma of the uvula - a rare incidental finding

Oral squamous papillomas are benign neoplasms of the oral cavity that occur commonly on the palate. Albeit benign and often asymptomatic, they may still cause concern due to their appearance, which may mimic other malignant oral pathologies. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is usually implicated in papilloma pathogenesis. We present a rare case of symptomatic oral squamous papilloma arising from the uvula and causing tongue and throat irritation. This benign lesion was excised with electrocautery.

The Efficacy of Low-Level Laser Therapy in Treating Oral Papilloma: A Case Reporting A Lingual Location

Oral papilloma is a benign proliferation of the stratified epithelium, which results in a papillary or verrucous exophytic mass, which can be induced by human papillomavirus. These oral mucosa lesions are most often asymptomatic and have small progression. Laser-assisted surgery is common nowadays with several advantages including successful hemostasis, devoid of sutures, wound sterilization and minimal postoperative pain, and edema. The aim of this report is to present the oral papilloma in a 40-year-old female patient and its treatment with soft-tissue laser. The lesion was excised with diode laser, and the healing was uneventful in a follow-up visit after 1 month. Oral papillomas can be found in young adult patient's oral cavity, and laser dentistry can be used by dental clinicians to treat these kinds of oral lesions and should be considered as an alternative to conventional surgery.

Endoscopy-Assisted Resection of Benign Lesions on the Base of the Tongue via the Transoral Approach Using a Harmonic Scalpel

PURPOSE

Surgical removal of lesions from the base of the tongue can be challenging for head and neck surgeons. This study evaluated the clinical outcomes of patients with benign lesions at the base of the tongue who underwent endoscopy-assisted resection through the transoral approach using an ultrasonic harmonic scalpel.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

This retrospective observational study was conducted from May 2013 to January 2016. Data collected for each patient included age, gender, chief complaints, clinical symptoms, diagnostic imaging, complications after resection, and reported outcomes of resection. Diagnoses were made based on patient complaints, clinical symptoms, and computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Diagnoses were confirmed by permanent pathologic sections.

RESULTS

Twelve patients with benign lesions on the base of the tongue were identified who had undergone endoscopy-assisted resection through the transoral approach using an ultrasonic harmonic scalpel. The patients had a mean age of 38.9 years. The benign lingual lesions consisted of lingual thyroid masses, squamous papillomas, schwannomas, pleomorphic adenomas, myoepithelioma, and lymphoid hyperplasia. Tumor size varied from 2.0 × 1.8 to 3.0 × 2.8 cm. All tumors were completely removed, and no complications occurred during or after surgery. The patients were followed for 6 to 30 months; 1 recurrence was found and was treated using a second endoscopy-assisted transoral resection.

CONCLUSIONS

Under endoscopic assistance, use of the harmonic scalpel through the transoral approach is a safe and feasible surgical technique for the removal of benign lesions at the base of the tongue.

Verrucous carcinoma and squamous cell papilloma of the oral cavity: Report of two cases and review of literature

Verrucous carcinoma (VC) of oral cavity is a rare variant of well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and squamous papilloma is a benign proliferation of the stratified squamous epithelium, which results in a papillary or verrucous exophytic mass. There is a certain clinical similarity between squamous cell papilloma and VC. We presented a report of two cases which are VC and squamous cell papilloma that are showed the same clinical appearance but different pathological appearance, with a review of the literature.
