Abstract
Objective There is currently a lack of evidence in evidence-based medicine regarding acupuncture treatment for experimental intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture treatment for experimental ICH based on neurological function scores and brain water content (BWC). Methods Eight mainstream Chinese and English databases were searched. Outcome measures included neurological function scores and BWC, and subgroup analysis was conducted based on study characteristics. Results A total of 32 studies were included. Meta-analysis results indicated that compared to the control group, the acupuncture group showed significant reductions in mNSS (MD = -3.16, p < 0.00001), Bederson score (MD = -0.99, p < 0.00001), Longa score (MD = -0.54, p < 0.0001), and brain water content (MD = -5.39, p < 0.00001). Subgroup analysis revealed that for mNSS, the autologous blood model (MD = -3.36) yielded better results than the collagenase model (MD = -0.92, p < 0.00001), and simple fixation (MD = -3.38) or no fixation (MD = -3.39) was superior to sham acupuncture (MD = -0.92, p < 0.00001). For BWC, the autologous blood model (MD = -7.73) outperformed the collagenase model (MD = -2.76, p < 0.00001), and GV20-GB7 (MD = -7.27) was more effective than other acupuncture points (MD = -2.92, p = 0.0006). Conclusion Acupuncture significantly improves neurological deficits and brain edema in experimental ICH. Acupuncture at GV20 - GB7 is more effective than at other points. Abstract
Background Limb motor disorders after stroke are very common, and the clinical related factors of improving limb motor function are still unclear. As a part of comprehensive rehabilitation strategy, acupuncture has been widely used in rehabilitation after stroke in China. But more evidence is needed for the influence of acupuncture and some other clinical factors on post-stroke motor disorders. Patients and Methods A retrospective study was conducted using the database of patients with post-stroke motor disorders admitted to the Neurological Rehabilitation Unit of the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The included patients were grouped according to whether NIHSS improved or muscle strength improved. The positive logistic regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of possible NIHSS improvement. Combined with the influencing factors of NIHSS improvement and muscle strength improvement, the influencing factors of limb motor function recovery after stroke were obtained. Results When analyzing the baseline of the included patients, it was found that patients with NIHSS improvement had earlier acupuncture intervention time (M, (IQR):13.5 (14), OR=0.716, 95% CI [0.591-0.869], p=0.001), more cumulative acupuncture treatment times (M,(IQR):29 (12), OR=0.744, 95% CI [0.608-0.910], p=0.004), and less hypertension history (OR=0.256, 95% CI [0.082-0.801], p=0.019). Smoking history only has positive significance in univariate and multivariate analysis of NIHSS, not muscle strength (OR=0.274, 95% CI [0.097-0.779], p=0.015). Conclusion The earlier acupuncture intervention and the more cumulative acupuncture treatment times are, the more beneficial the limb function of stroke patients with motor disorders will be. The previous history of hypertension is the influencing factor of limb motor function not improving in patients with limb motor disorder after a stroke. The effect of smoking history on limb movement function of patients with limb motor disorder after stroke needs further study.

Electroacupuncture Reduces Cerebral Hemorrhage Injury in Rats by Improving Cerebral Iron Metabolism. Mediators Inflamm 2022; 2022:6943438. Abstract
Objective To study the effects of electroacupuncture at Baihui and Dazhui points on the expression of hepcidin (Hepc), transferrin (Tf), transferrin receptor (TfR), and ferritin (Ft) in rats with cerebral hemorrhage to provide a theoretical basis for the treatment of cerebral hemorrhage with acupuncture. Method The model of cerebral hemorrhage in rats was established by autologous blood injection method and treated by electroacupuncture (EA) at the acupoints of Baihui and Dazhui. Hepc siRNA was injected into the lateral ventricle 30 min before model preparation to produce the cerebral hemorrhage model. The modified neurological severity score (mNSS) was used to assess the neurological function, and the total iron content in brain tissue was determined using atomic absorption spectrometry; the expression of Hepc, Ft, Tf, and TfR in perihematoma tissue was detected using immunohistochemistry; the interference efficiency of Hepc siRNA was detected using western blot and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results The degree of neurological deficit showed a downward trend at 3 days, 7 days, and 14 days, and electroacupuncture significantly reduced the neurological deficit score at each time point (P < 0.01). Regarding total iron content in brain tissue, on the 3rd day, the 7th day, and the 14th day, the iron content of the hematoma tissue after intracerebral hemorrhage was reduced by electroacupuncture (P < 0.01). Regarding immunohistochemical results. Hepc, Ft, Tf, and TfR protein expressions on day 14 were significantly higher after cerebral hemorrhage (P < 0.01). After electroacupuncture, the expression of Hepc, Ft, Tf, and TfR protein was significantly reduced (P < 0.01). Western blot and RT-PCR revealed that the interference efficiency of Hepc siRNA was statistically significant (P < 0.01). Conclusion Electroacupuncture can reduce neurological severity scores in rats with cerebral hemorrhage and may exert cerebral protective effects by reducing Hepc protein and gene expression; lowering Ft, Tf, and TfR protein expression; and promoting iron metabolism in the brain of rats with cerebral hemorrhage.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease. It is imperative to develop a proper treatment for this neurological disease in the aging society. This observational study investigated the effects of acupuncture therapy on MCI patients. Eleven healthy individuals and eleven MCI patients were recruited for this study. Oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin signals in the prefrontal cortex during working-memory tasks were monitored using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. Before acupuncture treatment, working-memory experiments were conducted for healthy control (HC) and MCI groups (MCI-0), followed by 24 sessions of acupuncture for the MCI group. The acupuncture sessions were initially carried out for 6 weeks (two sessions per week), after which experiments were performed again on the MCI group (MCI-1). This was followed by another set of acupuncture sessions that also lasted for 6 weeks, after which the experiments were repeated on the MCI group (MCI-2). Statistical analyses of the signals and classifications based on activation maps as well as temporal features were performed. The highest classification accuracies obtained using binary connectivity maps were 85.7% HC vs. MCI-0, 69.5% HC vs. MCI-1, and 61.69% HC vs. MCI-2. The classification accuracies using the temporal features mean from 5 seconds to 28 seconds and maximum (i.e, max(5:28 seconds)) values were 60.6% HC vs. MCI-0, 56.9% HC vs. MCI-1, and 56.4% HC vs. MCI-2. The results reveal that there was a change in the temporal characteristics of the hemodynamic response of MCI patients due to acupuncture. This was reflected by a reduction in the classification accuracy after the therapy, indicating that the patients’ brain responses improved and became comparable to those of healthy subjects. A similar trend was reflected in the classification using the image feature. These results indicate that acupuncture can be used for the treatment of MCI patients.

Abstract
Objective To explore the effect of cinepazide maleate on serum inflammatory factors of intensive care unit (ICU) patients with severe cerebral hemorrhage after surgery. Methods 116 ICU patients with severe cerebral hemorrhage treated in Taian Maternal and Child Health Hospital from June 2018 to June 2020 were selected as the research objects and randomly divided into the control group and experimental group, with 58 patients in each group. The control group was given routine treatment, while the experimental group was additionally given an intravenous drip of cinepazide maleate to compare the clinical efficacy and serum inflammatory factors between the two groups. Results The total effective rate in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). After treatment, the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and Fugl-Meyer scores in both groups were better than those before treatment, and the scores in the experimental group were better than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The oxidative stress indexes such as total antioxidant capacity (T-Aoc), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group, while malondialdehyde (MDA) in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the cerebrovascular function in the experimental group was significantly improved (P < 0.05), with statistically significant differences. Conclusion Cinepazide maleate can effectively reduce the serum inflammatory factor levels of ICU patients with severe cerebral hemorrhage after surgery, alleviate the oxidative stress response in the body, and improve the cerebrovascular function and cerebral nerve function, which is worthy of clinical promotion.

Effect of Holistic Nursing Intervention Combined with Humanized Nursing Intervention on Activities of Daily Living and Limb Movement Ability of Elderly Patients with Cerebral Hemorrhage after Surgery. Abstract
Background To improve the nursing status, activities of daily living (ADL), and limb movement ability of elderly patients with cerebral hemorrhage and to actively explore the comprehensive nursing mode that can meet the rehabilitation needs of patients. Methods 128 elderly patients with cerebral hemorrhage admitted to our department (2019.01–2021.01) were included in the study and randomly divided into the reference group and the study group according to the numeration table, with 64 cases in each group. The reference group received routine nursing, while the study group received holistic nursing combined with humanized nursing. Statistical methods were used to analyze the nursing effect of the two intervention models. Results With better scores of the upper limb muscle strength, lower limb muscle strength, and total Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) in both groups after nursing, the scores in the study group after nursing were higher than those in the reference group (P < 0.05). After nursing, the ADL scores of both groups were significantly improved and the score in the study group was better than that in the reference group (P < 0.05). After nursing, the degree of neurological deficit in both groups was significantly better than that before nursing and the degree in the reference group was more serious than that in the study group (P < 0.05). Compared with the reference group, the total infection rate in the study group was lower, while the nursing satisfaction was higher, with statistical significance (P < 0.05). Conclusion The holistic nursing combined with humanized nursing has a remarkable effect on the postoperative intervention of elderly patients with cerebral hemorrhage. It can improve the limb movement function, enhance the ADL, reduce the degree of neurological deficit, improve the quality of life, and enhance the nursing satisfaction of patients after intervention, which is worthy of clinical popularization.

Abstract
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), including mature BDNF (mBDNF) and precursor BDNF (proBDNF), plays a pivotal role in neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity and neurogenesis. However, the functional effect of the mBDNF/proBDNF ratio in haemorrhagic stroke remains unclear. ATP is a known mediator of BDNF production in neurons and glia. Therefore, we hypothesized that ATP could facilitate BDNF production, increase the mBDNF/proBDNF ratio and thereby alleviate cerebral haemorrhage-induced injury. In this experiment, a model of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) was produced by injecting 50 μL autologous blood into the right corpus striatum in healthy male rats. ATP was injected to promote BDNF production and increase the mBDNF/proBDNF ratio. After ATP pretreatment, P2X4R-shRNA and SB203580 were used to inhibit P2X4R and p38-MAPK, respectively. We provide direct evidence that ATP administration was successful in promoting mBDNF expression and increasing the mBDNF/proBDNF ratio after ICH injury. Additionally, ATP stimulation could significantly improve cerebral neurological function and alleviate neuronal damage. Furthermore, ATP injection was able to upregulate the expression of P2X4R and p-p38-MAPK. Moreover, both P2X4R-shRNA and SB203580 could effectively abolish the effect of ATP injection on the levels of P2X4R and p-p38-MAPK and the mBDNF/proBDNF ratio. Together, these findings show that ATP stimulation contributes to functional recovery after cerebral haemorrhage and that neuroprotection induced by ATP administration in ICH rats is accompanied by a strong increase in the mBDNF/proBDNF ratio. Here, we also show a significant role of P2X4R-p38-MAPK signalling in the ATP-induced increase in the mBDNF/proBDNF ratio in ICH.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by social behavior deficit in childhood without satisfactory medical intervention. Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) is a noninvasive technique derived from acupuncture and has been shown to have similar therapeutic effects in many diseases. Valproic acid- (VPA-) induced ASD is a known model of ASD in rats. The therapeutic efficacy of TEAS was evaluated in the VPA model of ASD in the present study. The offspring of a VPA-treated rat received TEAS in the early life stage followed by a series of examinations conducted in their adolescence. The results show that following TEAS treatment in early life, the social and cognitive ability in adolescence of the offspring of a VPA rat were significantly improved. In addition, the abnormal pain threshold was significantly corrected. Additional studies demonstrated that the dendritic spine density of the primary sensory cortex was decreased with Golgi staining. Results of the transcriptomic study showed that expression of some transcription factors such as the neurotrophic factor were downregulated in the hypothalamus of the VPA model of ASD. The reduced gene expression was reversed following TEAS. These results suggest that TEAS in the early life stage may mitigate disorders of social and recognition ability and normalize the pain threshold of the ASD rat model. The mechanism involved may be related to improvement of synaptic plasticity.
