Abstract
OBJECTIVES The initial color of a ceramic restoration is determined by the background color. Dental ceramics are great at masking a variety of stains, which helps achieve a natural and beautiful smile. A recent study delved into the effectiveness of CAD/CAM bleach shade ceramics of varying thicknesses in concealing dental discoloration. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this laboratory research, ceramic samples including feldspathic ceramics, lithium silicate ceramics, and zirconia ceramics of varying thicknesses were used. Each type of ceramic had a thickness of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mm, with dimensions of 7 × 7 mm (n = 10). Backgrounds of C4 and A2 color porcelain were used. To evaluate color coverage, ceramic pieces were placed on the C4 and A2 porcelain backgrounds, and the Vita spectrophotometer was used to calculate the L*a*b* parameters and color difference (ΔE00). A ΔE00 value of ≤ 1.8 was considered clinically acceptable. The data was analyzed using two-way and one-way analysis of variance tests, and pairwise comparisons of groups were performed using Tukey's test. RESULTS The research revealed that both the thickness and type of ceramic material significantly influenced the color changes of the samples, with their interaction also playing a crucial role (all three: p < 0.001). Zirconia demonstrated superior color masking performance on the C4 substrate at 0.5 and 1.0 mm thicknesses. The masking ability of ceramics varied at 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mm but notably improved at a thickness of 2.0 mm. CONCLUSIONS Zirconia generally demonstrated superior masking ability across all thicknesses, while other ceramics exhibited commendable performance only at 1.5 and 2.0 mm thicknesses. Nevertheless, augmenting the thickness of ceramic restorations amplified their masking capability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND When discolored teeth are repaired with porcelain veneers, the thickness of the restorations should be increased appropriately using opaque porcelain and bonded by applying opaque luting resin cement to cover discolored substrates. However, its impact on the opalescent performance has not been reported yet. PURPOSE To analyze the effects of opacity, body porcelain layer thickness, and luting resin cement on the opalescence properties of porcelain veneer restorations for discolored teeth. METHODS Ninety IPS d. SIGN A3 porcelain veneer specimens were prepared via powder-paste coating and sintering. Specimens were divided into three groups according to ceramic type and cement used or not: body porcelain group as control, body/opaque porcelain group and body/opaque porcelain-resin cement composite group. Each group was subdivided into three subgroups based on the thickness, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 mm (n = 10). Variolink N Bleach XL luting resin cement with thickness of 0.1 mm was applied to the bottoms of body/opaque porcelain specimens to produce body/opaque porcelain-resin cement composites. The opalescence (OP) values were calculated and the micromorphological characteristics were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Statistical analysis was performed by using ANOVA test (P < 0.05). RESULTS The opalescence values determined for the body porcelain groups with thicknesses of 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 mm and body/opaque porcelain specimens with thicknesses of 0.45/0.05, 0.70/0.05, and 0.95/0.05 mm were 3.35 ± 0.15, 3.83 ± 0.10, 6.73 ± 0.25, 7.95 ± 0.34, 15.16 ± 0.60, and 16.49 ± 0.89, respectively. The specimens in the body and body/opaque porcelain groups exhibited significant increases in their opalescence values with increasing thickness (P = 0.00). The opalescence values of the specimens increased significantly with the addition of a 0.05 mm opaque porcelain layer (P = 0.00). The opalescence values of the composites containing body/opaque porcelain layers with thicknesses of 0.45/0.05, 0.70/0.05, and 0.95/0.05 mm and luting resin cement were 9.46 ± 0.17, 16.47 ± 0.15, and 18.38 ± 0.47, respectively. The opalescence values of the composite specimens increased significantly with an increase in the thickness of the porcelain layer(P = 0.00). CONCLUSIONS The opaque porcelain layer and opaque resin cement can significantly improve the opalescence properties of porcelain laminate veneers for discolored teeth, but the opalescence performance is still poor than natural teeth. The body porcelain only contributes to opalescence within a certain thickness range.

Abstract
Background Similarity in the appearance of a monolithic restoration with the adjacent teeth is necessary. This study aims to influence the foundation material type and ceramic thickness on the final color of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) ceramic. Materials and Methods In this experimental study, the A2 translucent blocks of ZLS were sectioned into rectangular specimens with thicknesses 1, 1.5, and 2 mm (n = 15). Substructure materials include resin composite (B1, D2, A2, A3, and C3), nickel chrome alloy, amalgam, and white and black substrate. Substructure material of resin composite with A2 color was proposed as the control group. The value of the color difference (ΔE00) is calculated by the CIEDE2000 formula. Data analysis was accomplished by two-factor repeated measures ANOVA and one-sample t-test (α =0.05). Results The mean value of maximum ΔE00 with a black substrate (12.13 ± 0.17) at 1 mm ceramic thickness and the mean value of minimum ΔE00 with B1 resin composite foundation material (0.02 ± 0.17) at 2 mm ceramic thickness are visible. The significant effect of the foundation restoration type, thickness, and interaction between them is visible on ΔE00 (P < 0.001). Conclusion Different thickness is required to meet ideal esthetic outcomes with different substrates. Under the conditions of this investigation, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate over black, white, nickel-chromium, and amalgam did not meet acceptable outcomes.

Abstract
We aimed to assess the influence of professional dental prophylaxis on the translucency and color stability of a novel simplified shade nanohybrid composite material. Sixty composite disks (5 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick) of light (n = 30) and dark (n = 30) shades were prepared. The specimens were randomly divided into the following three groups (n = 10) according to the prophylaxis procedure used: ultrasonic scaling, air-powder polishing with sodium bicarbonate, and controls. The specimens were submitted to translucency and color analysis based on the CIELab system. Two measurements were performed before and after 48-h storage in coffee. Translucency values of untreated light and dark specimens were 9.15 ± 0.38 and 5.28 ± 1.10, respectively. Air-powder polishing decreased the translucency of the light composite specimens. Storage in coffee resulted in color changes (∆E) ranging between 2.69 and 12.05 and a mean translucency decrease ranging between -0.88 and -6.91. The samples in the light group tended to exhibit greater staining; the treatment method had no effect on ∆E. It can be concluded that light-shade composite restorations are more prone to translucency and color changes resulting from air-powder polishing and contact with staining media. However, further research using other composites and powders is required.

Abstract
Introduction In recent years, the use of bleach shade composite resins has increased due to the high esthetic demands. The aim of the present study was to investigate the masking ability and translucency of several bleach shade composite resins. Materials and Methods In this in vitro study, 180 discs from 9 bleach shade composite resins of 5 brands (G-aenial Anterior, Gradia Direct, Charisma Diamond, Estelite Sigma Quick, and Renamel Microfill) in thicknesses of 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 mm were prepared. The color parameters of the specimens were measured in a CIE l ∗ a ∗ b ∗ system using a spectrophotometer. Masking ability and translucency parameters were calculated, and the influence of thickness, shade, and composite resin brand on these variables was analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results Both masking ability and translucency differed significantly among groups (p < 0.001), but only MA was different between different brands (p < 0.001). Higher thicknesses showed lower translucency in all pairwise comparisons (p < 0.001). 0.5 mm-thick specimens had lower masking ability than 1.5 mm- (p=0.016) and 2 mm- (p=0.035) thick ones. However, masking ability of other thickness pairs did not show a significant difference (p > 0.05). G-aenial Anterior and Renamel Microfill had the highest and lowest masking ability. Bleach white shades had lower masking ability and higher translucency than extrawhite bleach shades. Conclusion Translucency and masking ability of bleach shade composite resins differed in different thicknesses, composite resin brands, and shade groups.

Abstract
Objective: To compare the fracture mode of lithium disilicate ceramics and zirconia ceramics through a single-load-to-failure test, and reveal the cause of failure through the fractographic analysis of fracture morphology. Methods: Based on the standardized preparations, 10 IPS e.max disilicate ceramic crowns (IPCs) and 10 monolithic zirconia ceramic crowns (MZCs) were designed and fabricated. All the specimens were placed on a universal material testing machine for a single-load-to-failure test. The fracture load was recorded, and two independent sample [Formula: see text]-tests were performed. Additionally, the type of fracture under a stereo-microscope was observed, and the morphological characteristics of the fracture with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) were investigated. Results: The fracture load of the IPC group was [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]N, and that of the MZC group was [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]N, with a statistically significant difference ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]). The fracture types of the IPC group and the MZC group were similar, namely, types II and III. The fracture modes of the two groups were all ceramic layer fracture. Through SEM, the origin of the crack on the occlusal surface could be traced back. The crystal fracture of IPC group had a rock sugar-like pattern, and the crystal distribution of MZC group was uniform. Conclusions: Zirconia ceramics have higher fracture load and a denser crystal structure compared to lithium disilicate. Fractographic analysis method could be a better way to analyze the failure mode of single-layer porcelain materials and reveal the origin of fracture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the preservation of enamel after tooth preparation for porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs) at different preparation depths based on a fully digital workflow. METHODS AND MATERIALS Sixty extracted human maxillary anterior teeth, including 20 maxillary central incisors (MCIs), 20 maxillary lateral incisors (MLIs), and 20 maxillary canines (MCs) underwent microcomputed tomography (CT) scanning, and were reconstructed as three-dimensional (3D) enamel and dentin models. Subsequently, the three-dimensional (3D) enamel models were imported into Materialise, where each enamel model underwent seven types of virtual preparation for PLVs at preparation depths at 0.1-mm increments from 0.1-0.3-0.5 mm (D1) to 0.7-0.9-1.1 mm (D7). The enamel surface was depicted by merging the virtual preparation and, respective, dentin models. The enamel area and prepared surface were measured to calculate the percentage of enamel (R%). The data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (α=0.05). RESULTS The group-wise mean (standard deviation) R values for the MCIs were as follows: D1-D3: 100.00 (0) each, and D4-D7: 74.70 (2.45), 51.40 (5.12), 24.40 (3.06), and 0.00 (0), respectively. The group-wise mean R values for the MLIs were 100.00 (0), 73.70 (3.40), 53.50 (3.44), 25.20 (3.79), and 0.90 (0.99) for the D1-D5 groups, respectively; and 0.00 (0) each for the D6-D7 groups. The group-wise mean (standard deviations) R values for the MCs were as follows: D1-D3: 100.00 (0) each, and D4-D7: 99.00 (1.34), 77.10 (3.28), 74.20 (3.61), and 52.20 (4.09), respectively. The one-way ANOVA revealed significant differences between the seven groups in the MCIs, MLIs, and MCs (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our results recommended preparation depths of up to 0.3-0.5-0.7 mm (MCIs), 0.1-0.3-0.5 mm (MLIs), and 0.4-0.6-0.8 mm (MCs) to facilitate complete intraenamel preparation. Moreover, 50% enamel was preserved at preparation depths of 0.5-0.7-0.9 mm (MCIs), 0.3-0.5-0.7 mm (MLIs), and 0.7-0.9-1.1 mm (MCs).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the influence of thickness and opacity on the ability of composite resin and ceramic veneer restorations to mask discolored teeth. METHODS Ninety veneers were made of lithium disilicate ceramic, shades BL1 and 0 (IPS e.max Press, Ivoclar Vivadent), and 60 were made of composite resin, shade BL-L (IPS Empress Direct, Ivoclar Vivadent). The veneers measured 4 mm in width x 4 mm in length and had a thickness of 0.7, 1.0, or 1.2 mm. One hundred and fifty human premolars were selected to obtain 150 dental fragments with the following dimensions: 4 mm x 4 mm x 3 mm (width x length x thickness). The fragments were discolored, submitted to color measurement and randomly assigned to 15 groups (n=10) according to the type and opacity of the restorative material (IPS e.max Press: high translucency [HT], low translucency [LT], and medium opacity [MO]; IPS Empress Direct: dentin and enamel) and thickness of the veneers (0.7, 1.0, and 1.2 mm). After cementation of the ceramic or composite resin veneers using a translucent resin cement (RelyX veneer, 3M), a final color measurement was taken from each specimen and the total color variation (ΔE) was calculated by subtracting the initial and the final color measurement. The final lightness (L*) of the restored dental fragments was also calculated. RESULTS The highest ΔE values were observed for the LT and MO ceramic groups, followed by dentin composite resin. Regarding the different thicknesses of ceramic veneers, every 1.2-mm-thick group had higher values of ΔE, considering their respective opacities (p<0.05). The highest lightness values were found for the LT and MO ceramic veneers (thickness of 1.2 mm). Dentin-shade composite resins showed similar lightness values in all groups. CONCLUSION The best thickness/opacity combinations for masking discolored dental substrates were LT and MO ceramic veneers with 1.2-mm thickness. Dentin-shade composite resin veneers with a thickness of 0.7-1.0 mm showed good ability to mask discolored dental substrates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review on the masking ability of discolored substrates, analyzing the capacity and quality of the response produced by the different methodologies and techniques applied to overcome this clinical challenge. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The electronic search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, without date restriction. In vitro studies, written in English, applying different methodologies to evaluate masking ability were included. The variables of interest were: type, color and thickness of the restorative and/or cement material; use of pigments in the restorative material and/or cement; color of the substrate; and background color used for the evaluations. RESULTS Database search retrieved 307 eligible papers with a final inclusion of 47 published papers. Approximately 98% of the studies used ΔE, 36% used TP, and only 6% used CR to evaluate the masking ability of restorative materials. CONCLUSIONS The most appropriate methodology to evaluate the masking ability is using color difference equations (ΔE) associated with the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE As different methodologies have been used to evaluate the masking ability of esthetic restorative materials on colored substrates, there is an urgent need to reach a consensus and propose a method, which is suggested by the present systematic review.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To select the most effective method among different masking treatments, such as different thickness and transparence, tissue surface's opaque coating, and opaque resin cement to restore discolored teeth esthetically by porcelain veneer. METHODS Four extracted intact maxillary central incisors were prepared for porcelain veneer restoration and each three heat pressed porcelain veneers from three thicknesses (0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm) and two transparency(high transparence, HT and low transparence, LT))in Vita shade A2 were fabricated for each tooth, in total of 72 pieces. The surfaces of three prepared teeth were then painted to mimic situations of severe dental fluorosis, severe tetracycline teeth, and necrotic teeth. Each of the veneers was temporarily cemented to the corresponding tooth surface using try-in cements with three different colors (transparent, opaque, and yellow), then used the shade guide (3D master) and electronic colorimeter (easy shade) to record the shade of each porcelain veneer through hue, lightness, and chroma reading. After that, high-transparence porcelain veneers in thickness of 0.8 mm was fused with a layer of opaque porcelain in tissue surface, and were shade matched again after cementation. Statistic treatments were performed to analyze the difference in each masking method. RESULTS For each 0.2 mm increase in the veneer thickness of porcelain, the average lightness was reduced by 1 unit, while the chroma was not changed which was independent of the type of the resin cements. When the thickness of the porcelain veneer was decreased to 0.8 mm, the opacity effect was not remarkable even if a low-transparence porcelain veneer was used. Transparent and yellow resin cements had poor opaque performance, while opaque resin cement could reduce the lightness by 2 units and the chroma was also reduced. The opaque layer of the tissue surface could be applied uniformly, and the lightness and chroma could be reduced to Vita 2M1 to 2M1.5 levels regardless of the color of resin cements, which suggested a stable opacity effect for different discolored teeth in this study. CONCLUSION For porcelain veneer restoration of discolored teeth, thickened veneers are the most effective means to display a natural transmittance and color. Tissue surface's opacity coatings and opaque resin cements can also be used to reduce grayscale and increase lightness.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the interrelationship between tooth preparation and dental structure of Chinese maxillary central incisors and provide scientific guidance for clinical all-ceramic restoration. Forty-five specimens of maxillary central incisors were fabricated by 3D printer based on data of Micro CT scanning. Subsequently, every three specimens from the same natural tooth were randomly divided into three groups (n = 15): porcelain veneer, all ceramic crown, and the blank control group. All the specimen teeth were prepared according to routine clinical criteria, reconstructed into 3D models and then measured in software. The results showed that the mean quantity of reduction (volume fraction) was (28.35 ± 4.37) % and (56.93 ± 3.47) % for porcelain veneer and all-ceramic crown, respectively. The bonding areas of different all-ceramic restorations were (128.85 ± 11.73) mm2 and (97.15 ± 9.98) mm2 for all-ceramic crown and porcelain veneer respectively. In porcelain veneer group, the area of enamel adhesive was (54.80 ± 12.70) mm2, and the area of dentin was (42.35 ± 9.62) mm2. As the results of the one-sample t test, the mean distances from medullary angle to incisal edge or adjacent surface have significant differences with the test value which was set as 0.5 (P < .05). The reduction of the tooth for porcelain veneer is less than that of ceramic crown and the cementation of porcelain veneer is mostly dependent on the conservation of the enamel during preparation. The region from mesial adjacent surface to mesiopulpal angle is prone to have the problem of medullary perforation.

Abstract
The treatment of severe tetracycline discoloration is a challenge for the dentist. There are several treatment options and one of the most effective is the use of feldspathic veneers. The aim of this clinical case was to carry out the replacement with conventional feldspathic ceramic veneers on a patient with highly stained teeth (grade IV tetracycline) by a minimally invasive approach. Clinical examination revealed gingival retraction, color change of the veneers, ceramic cracked of 1.1 and 1.3 and incisal wear in lower anterior teeth. The decision was to retreat with feldspathic ceramic veneers from 1.6 to 2.6. Premolars and first molars were included because its dark color intensifies the width buccal corridors. Also, the restoration with veneers from 3.3 to 4.3 was considered. Firstly, the veneers were removed and the color was selected by the Vitapan 3D Master guide (Vita Zahnfabrick, Bad Säckingen, Germany). Mock-up was made to evaluate aesthetic, phonetic and functional parameters. Then, teeth were prepared through the mock-up in order to reduce the minimal amount of dental tissue possible. Opaque dentine mass of microhybrid composite (Esthet-X A2O, Dentsply Sirona, Konstanz, Germany) was placed to mask the most intense stains. The definitive impressions were taken with silicone (Aquasil Ultra XLV, Dentsply Sirona, Konstanz, Germany) were taken to fabricate conventional feldsphatic ceramic veneers (Noritake kisai Co, Ltd. Japan) by the parallel stratification masking technique. For cementing, an opaque cement was selected from the try-in tests (Calibra, Dentsply Sirona, Konstanz, Germany) and the composite was silicatized with an air-abrasion device. A favorable and minimally invasive result was achieved to treat grade IV tetracycline stains, surpassing the patient’s aesthetic expectations and functional needs.

Abstract
Objectives: The objectives were to evaluate the degree of dye penetration of three different dental materials as esthetic veneer restorations on anterior teeth using stereomicroscope, and to provide reference for clinical choice. Materials and Methods: Sixty freshly extracted human maxillary central incisors were selected and randomly divided into three main groups of 20 each. Respectively, the teeth were prepared for veneer restoration by fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) (Everstick NET, Stick Tech), porcelain laminate veneer (PLV) (IPS Empress II(E-Max Press)) and 3M composites (3M ESPE) bonding with G-Cem resin cement (GC). After exposed to thermocycling (500cycles per day (5–55 °C, intervals: 30 s)) and immersed in 2% basic fuchsin dye solution for 24 h, the specimens were then sectioned buccolingual into three halves in a vertical plane parallel and measured dye penetration using stereomicroscope (Zeiss). The data collected was recorded by the dye penetration index (0–5) and statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and T-tests using SPSS 13. Results: It is evident that the FRC group showed the lowest mean score of 0.333 mm, and the PLV group showed a highest mean score of 0.749 mm, as compared with the FRC group and the 3M composites group. Overall, when the three groups were compared for microleakage using ANOVA, there was significant difference among the groups. Conclusions: To evaluate the dye penetration of microleakage, the FRC showed a better marginal adaptability for veneer restoration. Therefore, within the limitation of this study, the use of FRC as veneer on anterior teeth can be suggested.
