Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mothers' knowledge about asthma management on quality of life and asthma control among children with asthma in Palestine. METHODS This cross-sectional study was carried out by mothers of children with asthma in Palestine in four major public hospitals. Mothers of a total of 220 were selected randomly via a computerized system. Data were collected using Pediatric Asthma Quality of Life (PAQLQ), an Asthma Control Test (ACT), and the mothers' Self-Practices and Knowledge (SPK) of asthma management questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS (V25). RESULTS A total of 220 mothers of children with asthma were randomly selected and invited to participate but 182 agreed to participate, with a response rate of 83%. The mean age of participant children was 9.7 ± 2.72 years, and the mean age of mothers was 34.5 ± 9.6 years. The mean score of the QoL was 3.91(SD ± 1.61) out of 7. Most participant children had uncontrolled asthma with a total mean score of 14.13(SD ± 5.23) on the ACT. The mean score of mothers' SPK level was 2.12(SD ± 0.83) with a total mean score of 42.13 ± 3.68 out of 68, which indicated a moderate level of knowledge and there was a strong correlation between mothers' SPK and children's QoL. CONCLUSIONS The investigation showed that mothers of children with asthma had moderate SPK, and the children had uncontrolled asthma with poor QoL. These findings suggest developing educational initiatives to enhance parents' asthma-related knowledge and skills to improve their children's asthma-related quality of life and asthma control.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the study was to assess adherence to asthma controller therapy and factors that influence asthma control and to determine the association between asthma knowledge of the caregiver and asthma control among admitted children with asthma. SETTINGS AND DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2022 and May 2023 in a tertiary care hospital. Children with a diagnosis of asthma aged 2-14 years, who were admitted to the hospital with an exacerbation of asthma were identified. METHODS Caregivers of the admitted children were interviewed using the Asthma Knowledge Questionnaire and Pediatric Inhaler Adherence Questionnaire. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED Demographic and clinical data were described using descriptive analyses, where mean and standard deviation were used for normally distributed continuous variables, median and interquartile range (IQR), if otherwise. A P < 0.05 was set as a cutoff for statistical significance. RESULTS A total of 144 caregivers completed the survey. Median score for parents' knowledge of asthma was 64%, with an IQR of 59-67. Both mother's and father's educational levels were associated with a good level of knowledge: odds ratio (OR) = 2.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1-5.6, and OR = 5.33, 95% CI = 2.23-12.7, respectively. Median adherence to metered dose inhaler (MDI) was 4 (IQR = 2-6). Children who had been admitted to the general ward in the last 6 months were three times more likely to be nonadherent to MDI (OR = 3.03, 95% CI = 1.18-7.82). Forty-three percent of children who were nonadherent to MDI were less likely to have their asthma controlled (OR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.17-1.06). CONCLUSION This study revealed that a low level of knowledge among caregivers of asthma patients is linked to inadequate adherence to asthma controller therapy. As medication adherence is crucial for achieving desirable asthma control and improving the quality of life for this population, efforts need to be made to enhance the knowledge level of parents of children with asthma.

Abstract
Introduction According to disability-adjusted life years (DALY), bronchial asthma (BA) is rated 28th among the top causes of disease burden globally and among the most significant reasons for years lived with disability. Internationally, 300 million people have asthma, and another 100 million individuals may develop it by 2025. In Al-Baha City, where environmental factors such as dust and pollen levels can exacerbate asthma symptoms, understanding and addressing the health-related quality of life of asthmatic patients is crucial. Understanding the health-related quality of life of asthmatic patients can inform public health policies and initiatives aimed at reducing environmental triggers and promoting better asthma management in the city. Objectives The study aims to assess the impact of asthma regarding physical, emotional, and social activities that affect health-related quality of life. Subjects and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2023 to May 2023 at King Fahad Hospital in Al-Baha City, Saudi Arabia. The study used a Mini Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire that measures physical, emotional, and social activities that affect health-related quality of life. Results One hundred and fifty-one out of 185 participants responded, yielding a response rate of 81.6%. The average age of the participants was 52, with a standard deviation of 15.4 years. Participants' responses regarding symptoms related to the environment during the last two weeks indicated "all the time" experiencing feeling bothered by or having to avoid cigarette smoke (n=104, 69%) and dust (n=92, 61%) in the environment. Moreover, considering emotion-related symptoms, 54% reported they did not feel afraid of not having their asthma medication available. Similarly, 46% reported never feeling frustrated because of asthma, whereas 3.3% of the participants documented hardly ever feeling frustrated. Regarding social activity limitations, 44 individuals (29%) reported no limits in these activities, while 43 (28%) reported being completely limited. While there were limitations in work-related activities, 42 participants (28%) reported no restrictions, whereas 34 (23%) reported being completely limited. Conclusion The study findings highlight a concern about suboptimal asthma control and the need to attain more satisfactory levels of asthma management.

Abstract
The Saudi Initiative for Asthma 2024 (SINA-2024) is the sixth version of asthma guidelines for the diagnosis and management of asthma for adults and children that was developed by the SINA group, a subsidiary of the Saudi Thoracic Society. The main objective of the SINA is to have guidelines that are up-to-date, simple to understand, and easy to use by healthcare workers dealing with asthma patients. To facilitate achieving the goals of asthma management, the SINA Panel approach is mainly based on the assessment of symptom control and risk for both adults and children. The approach to asthma management is aligned for age groups: adults, adolescents, children aged 5-12 years, and children aged <5 years. SINA guidelines have focused more on personalized approaches reflecting a better understanding of disease heterogeneity with the integration of recommendations related to biologic agents, evidence-based updates on treatment, and the role of immunotherapy in management. The medication appendix has also been updated with the addition of recent evidence, new indications for existing medication, and new medications. The guidelines are constructed based on the available evidence, local literature, and the current situation at national and regional levels. There is also an emphasis on patient-doctor partnership in the management that also includes a self-management plan.

Abstract
Introduction Asthma is a chronic heterogeneous inflammatory disease that affects millions of individuals around the globe. Standardized asthma management is crucial to maintain and control the disease. Caregivers are the leading players in managing asthma during childhood. Studies are lacking in the Tabuk region. The aim of this study was to elucidate knowledge levels and common practices of caregivers of pediatric patients with asthma in the Tabuk region of Saudi Arabia and its impact on asthma control. Methodology A validated cross-sectional survey of the population of the Tabuk region was conducted from July 1, 2022, to September 30, 2022. Convenience sampling via an internet-based questionnaire within the study area was deployed, followed by phone interviews. Results A total of 393 caregivers completed the questionnaire, and the data were analyzed. The median age of asthmatic children was nine years, and most of them were males (60.8%). Most caregivers had a higher education (62.1%). The symptoms of allergic rhinitis were found in almost 80% of children. Pulmonary function tests were performed in 42.5% of children, and only one-third underwent radioallergosorbent (RAST) skin testing. About half the children had an asthmatic attack and an emergency department visit once during the previous 12 months, and most were hospitalized during that period. Most caregivers showed good knowledge (score=7) about symptoms of asthma and factors that could worsen the child's asthma, as well as good asthma control practices (score ≥7). Children with poorly controlled asthma were younger, had significant allergic rhinitis symptoms (30%), and underwent pulmonary function tests (60%). Conclusion In the Tabuk region, the extent of asthma control was significantly associated with caregivers' knowledge and practices for children with asthma. Future public education campaigns should focus on closing the observed knowledge and practice gaps to reduce the impact of childhood asthma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We sought to determine variables associated with asthma among children from military and non-military families. METHODS We performed secondary data analysis on the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Parents with and without military experience (n = 61,079) were asked whether a child ever had asthma and currently has asthma. We used two multiple logistic regression models to determine the influence of rurality and geographic region on "ever" and "current" asthma in children of military and non-military families, while controlling for socio-demographic and behavioral variables. RESULTS Overall childhood asthma prevalence for children in military families was lower than non-military families (ever, 9.7% vs. 12.9%; currently, 6.2% vs. 8.2%) in 2016. However, multiple logistic regression showed variation in "ever" and "current" asthma among children of military and non-military families by rurality and race. DISCUSSION Developers of public health asthma interventions should consider targeting African-American children of military families living in urban areas. This population is approximately twice as likely to have asthma as Caucasian children of non-military families.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the level of asthma control among children and to investigate the association between asthma control and the knowledge of caregivers. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2018 to July 2018 among 278 children with asthma aged 1-12 with their caregivers attending the primary health care centers in Al Madinah Al Munawarah, Saudi Arabia. An asthma knowledge questionnaire was used to measure the parents' knowledge. The Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids (TRACK) and the Childhood Asthma Control Test (C-ACT) were used to evaluate asthma control among the children. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to compare the knowledge level between the controlled and uncontrolled asthma groups. RESULTS Approximately 62.6% of children had uncontrolled asthma and 37.4% were controlled. The knowledge scores of the caregivers ranged from 43 to 64, with a mean score of 52.55. The mean knowledge score was higher in the controlled group (55.57) than in the uncontrolled group (50.76). There was a statistically significant difference in the knowledge scores between the participant groups (t=9.892, p less than 0.001). CONCLUSION There is a high percentage of children with uncontrolled asthma and 3 is a high knowledge deficit among the caregivers of children with asthma. An educational program targeting the general population and the caregivers should be implemented to correct any false beliefs regarding asthma and asthma medications.

Abstract
Background Bronchial asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease that is characterized by reversible airway obstruction due to bronchial hyperresponsiveness. It is one of the most common chronic diseases. In Saudi Arabia, asthma affects 2 million people with asthma frequency in children markedly higher than adults with regional variations ranging from 9% to 33.7%. Objective The aim of this study is to measure asthma awareness and knowledge of study participants during the ongoing annual Saudi asthma awareness campaigns and compare them with previous survey data conducted in 2014. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out in the form of a survey distributed across three major cities in Saudi Arabia, Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam, during the National Asthma Awareness Campaign in major regional shopping centers in April 2019. Asthma knowledge scores across different demographic groups were generated from surveyed data. Descriptive and correlative statistical analyses were performed to identify factors associated with changes in asthma knowledge. Scores were compared to previous survey results. Results The mean score for asthma knowledge was 15.6 out of 25. Asthma knowledge significantly correlated with age (P=0.002), asthma status of the participants (P=0.001), having children with asthma (P=0.005) or knowing friends or family with asthma (P=0.029) but not with other socioeconomic factors such as gender, marital status, occupation, level of education and number of children in the family (P > 0.05). There was a significant difference in the asthma scores from 2014 (M= 63%, SD=26) to 2019 (M= 70%, SD= 26) conditions; t (24) = -2.106, p=0.046. Conclusion Further educational campaigns are necessary to enhance and measure general public awareness of asthma, its differential diagnosis against other respiratory infections, environmental triggers, risk factors as well as treatment options.

Abstract
Introduction Bronchial asthma has grown in epidemic proportions, and it is one of the most chronic diseases that affect many societies in the world. As managing asthma is complex, new management approaches have been developed, such as the written asthma action plan. This study aims to assign a baseline for the patients’ knowledge about asthma and its management and to assess their need for an asthma action plan. Then, to identify the effect of the written asthma action plan on the following parameters: exacerbations rate, and the frequency of using rescue mediations. Also, to compare the quality of life, functional limitations, and the level of patients’ self-confidence in treating their asthma before and after using the written asthma action plan. Method This study is a cross-sectional and interventional mixed-method study design. It was conducted at the National Guard Health Affairs (NGHA) asthma clinics between October 2017 to November 2017. Asthmatic patients who were above five years old and had no other lung comorbidities were evaluated before and after following the written asthma action plan by using three previously validated and published surveys that consist of five sections: demography, knowledge, quality of life, exacerbation rate, and overall evaluation. Results This study enrolled 58% (209) males and 42% (154) females. Regarding asthma medication knowledge and attack management, 62.3% of the patients do not adhere to their maintenance medications when they do not have asthma symptoms. Also, only 24.9% were very confident about knowing how to use their inhalers. For the impact of asthma on patients’ quality of life and the functional limitations, we found that 42.1% of patients were absent from school or work more than once a week because of asthma. While 61.0% of patients did not attend social events twice or less per week because of their asthma. The third section of the survey was about asthma exacerbation related events during the past year, we found that 39.0% of patients had one or more asthma attacks, 41.6% visited the emergency room (ER) once or more during the past year, and 28.1% of patients have been hospitalized because of their asthma. Finally, the section about patients’ evaluation of their asthma and their confidence about managing their condition, we found that around 20% of patients had poor or no control over their condition. In the second phase of the study, which includes 60 subjects, we found that following the action plan helps in increasing the patients’ knowledge about their condition, and improves their quality of life and functional limitations as they learned how to cope with their symptoms. In addition, it has increased the confidence level of patients about controlling their asthma and decreasing the asthma exacerbation related events rates. Overall, the patients’ evaluation of their asthma has been increased significantly (p-value= 0.023). Conclusion Most of the asthmatic patients had insufficient knowledge and/or poor adherence to their treatment which impacted their quality of life. The written asthma action plan was effective in increasing the patients’ knowledge about their condition, improving their quality of life and functional limitations, and increasing their confidence level about controlling their asthma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop, implement, and evaluate the effects of a school-based asthma educational program on Saudi primary school teachers' asthma awareness and competence in delivering asthma-related first aid interventions. METHODS An asthma educational intervention program entitled "School Asthma Action Program" (SAAP) was designed based on pedagogical principles and implemented among teachers randomly selected from girls' primary schools in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This pilot study employed a pre-test/post-test experimental design. A previously tested asthma awareness questionnaire and a custom-designed asthma competence score sheet were used to evaluate the effects of the educational intervention program on teacher's asthma awareness and competence in providing asthma-related first aid interventions at schools. RESULTS Forty-seven teachers from five different primary schools participated in the program. Of the 47 teachers, 39 completed both the pre- and post-program questionnaires. The SAAP improved teachers' awareness of asthma (teachers' median pre-program score was 11 (range 5-18) and their post-program score was 15 (range 7-18), p < 0.001) and their attitudes toward asthma management at schools (teachers' median pre-program score was 74 (range 15-75) and their post-program score was 75 (range 15-75), p = 0.043). Further, it improved teachers' competence in providing asthma-related first aid interventions (teachers' mean pre-program score was 1.4 ± 2.3 and their mean post-program score was 9.8 ± 0.5, p < 0.001). After completing the SAAP, a high proportion of teachers reported increased confidence in providing care to children with asthma at school. CONCLUSION School-based asthma educational programs can significantly improve teachers' knowledge of asthma and their competence in providing asthma-related first aid interventions during emergencies.
