Abstract
Objective Preeclampsia is a major risk factor for maternal and foetal mortality and morbidity. There have been tremendous efforts to identify serum biomarkers which can reliably predict the occurrence of preeclampsia. The study aims to assess the biomarkers that have the greatest utility in the diagnosis of preeclampsia. Methods A systematic search was performed on the PubMed literature database, and chain references were retrieved. Original research articles composed of case controls, cohorts, randomised control trials, and cross-sectional studies were included. The recorded variables included each study's design, type, year, and location; the value (mean ± standard deviation) of the markers in the patients and the pregnant controls; and the p-value, unit of measurement, and the sample size of each study. The results were interpreted based on the standardised mean difference (SMD) values. Results A total of 398 studies were retrieved from the PubMed database. After further analysis, 89 studies were selected for this review. An additional 47 studies were included based on chain referencing. Later, 136 full-text articles were reviewed in detail and their data were entered. Finally, 25 studies, in which 13 serum biomarkers were assessed, were selected for this meta-analysis. The levels of the angiogenic markers fms-like tyrosine kinase (sFlt), sFlt/placental growth factor (PlGF), and endoglin were significantly higher in patients with preeclampsia than in the pregnant controls. The levels of PlGF and the lipid biomarkers high density lipoprotein (HDL) and adiponectin were significantly lower, while the levels of triglycerides, apolipoprotein B (APO-B), and leptin were elevated in the preeclamptic patients compared to the pregnant controls (p < 0.05). Conclusion In our study, the values of the serum biomarkers sFlt, PlGF, sFlt/PlGF, HDL, adiponectin, leptin, triglycerides, and APO-B differed significantly between preeclampsia patients and the pregnant controls. These findings demand advanced evaluation of biomarkers to enhance diagnostic screening for preeclampsia.

Abstract
Background: This study was conducted to compare the levels of maternal serum soluble endoglin (sEng) and cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) in pregnant females with PE to normotensive pregnant ones, together with relating these levels to preeclampsia (PE) severity and onset. Method of the study: It was a comparative study in Mansoura University Hospital, Egypt, to detect the levels of serum sEng by ELISA besides the levels of cffDNA by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in 80 pregnant females suffering from PE in addition to 80 normotensive pregnant ones that were included as control. Results: Levels of serum sEng and cffDNA were higher in PE cases than control (p < 0.0001٭ both) and were significantly related to the severity of the disease. Levels were also higher in early than late onset PE (p < 0.003٭ and <0.002٭, respectively). Sensitivities, specificities, positive, and negative predictive values in addition to accuracy of serum sEng and cffDNA were 97.5%, 98.8%, 98.7%, 97.5%, and 98.1% and 97.5%, 93.8%, 94.0%, 97.4%, and 95.6%, respectively. Conclusion: Maternal serum sEng and cffDNA can be good markers for diagnosis of PE in Egyptian patients. They are positively related to the disease severity. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Soluble tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK) is linked to endothelial dysfunction; a key factor in pre-eclamptic pathogenesis. This study aimed to compare sTWEAK levels during pregnancy to assess for its prognostic ability. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty three high risk pregnant women were followed up from 12 weeks of gestation till term. Serum levels of sTWEAK and platelet derived growth factor (PlGF), blood pressure, serum glucose, uric acid, urea/creatinine and liver function tests were measured. Subjects were stratified according to the ACOG criteria as women who developed PE, or PIH or remained normotensive at term. A negative control group of normotensive healthy pregnant women (n = 17) was also recruited for comparison. RESULTS Baseline sTWEAK levels were lower (4.03 ± 0.37 ng/dl) in HR cohort that developed PE and further reduced at term (1.93 ± 0.23 ng/dl) as compared to HR subjects who remained normotensive and negative control group (30.53 ± 0.79 ng/dl; p < 0.01). Likewise PlGF levels were significantly lower (74.22 ± 10.11 pg/ml) in HR cohort that developed PE (p = 0.013). At term 39.68% (n = 22) HR subjects with low sTWEAK developed PIH and 34.92% (n = 24) developed PE. In terms of high risk characteristics observed in the HR group; 73% of the subjects were multiparous, whereas 26.98% reported to have developed PE in previous pregnancies. CONCLUSION sTWEAK levels at early pregnancy weeks were found to be low in high risk females who developed PE at follow up versus normotensive pregnant women. Baseline TWEAK might serve as an independent variable for prediction of pre-eclampsia; however longitudinal studies with larger sample size are required to ascertain the causal relation.

Abstract
Purpose: The challenge to obtain improved predictive tools, able to identify women destined to develop preeclampsia (PE), is raising the interest of researchers for the attractive chance to allow for timely initiation of prophylactic therapy, appropriate antenatal surveillance, and better-targeted research into preventive interventions. We aimed to gather all the evidence reported up to now in scientific literature relating to all prediction tests for PE.Materials and methods: We searched articles on conventional literature platforms from January 1952 to August 2016, using the terms "preeclampsia," "gestational preeclampsia," and "gestational hypertensive disorders" combined with "predictive test" and "risk assessment." Abstracts/titles identified by the search were screened by three investigators.Results: The search identified 203 citations, of which 154 potentially relevant after the initial evaluation. Among these studies, 20 full articles were excluded, therefore, 134 primary studies met the criteria for inclusion and were analyzed.Conclusions: Current evidence suggests that a combination of several features may provide the best predictive accuracy for the identification of PE. Large-scale, multicenter, multiethnic, prospective trials are required to propose an ideal combination of markers for routine screening.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy, threatening fetal and maternal health. The aim of our study is to examine the association between preeclampsia and the connecting peptide of the pregnancy hormone relaxin (pro-RLX2) as a potential new biochemical marker. STUDY DESIGN This is a nested case/control study derived from the cohort of pregnancies delivering at Women & Infants Hospital. Cases were identified at a clinic or by hospital codes, and individually confirmed by record review. Stored samples were available from 'integrated' Down syndrome screening. Results were expressed as multiples of the median (MoM). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Preeclampsia was classified as early/severe, late/severe, or mild based on professional guidelines. RESULTS Fifty-one cases were each matched with five control pregnancies. Population distribution parameters were derived for cases and controls. As shown previously, discrimination between cases and controls (applying MoM analysis) was possible for PlGF (0.576, p < .05), inhibin A (1.45, p < .05) and endoglin (1.278, p < .05). No association with preeclampsia was found for pro-RLX2. However, pro-RLX2 correlates with Inhibin A and Endoglin. CONCLUSIONS Endoglin, Inhibin A and PlGF are highly predictive of preeclampsia. Quantification of pro-RLX2 is not able to predict preeclampsia. Nevertheless, the potential involvement of relaxin 2/pro-RLX2 in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia requires further study.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a placenta disease, featured by hypertension, proteinuria, and other multiorgan dysfunctions, and its etiology is unclear. We and others have shown that intensive endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and unfolded protein response (UPR) occur in the PE placenta. In this study, we isolated detergent-insoluble proteins (DIPs) from human placenta tissues, which were enriched with protein aggregates, to characterize the placenta UPR in PE. With data-independent acquisition (DIA) mass spectrometry, we identified 2066 DIPs across all normal (n = 10) and PE (n = 10) placenta samples, among which 110 and 108 DIPs were significantly up- and down-regulated in PE, respectively. Per clustering analysis, differential DIPs could generally distinguish PE from normal placentas. We verified the MS quantitation of endoglin and vimentin by immunoblotting. In addition, we observed that PE placenta tissues have remarkably more endoglin in the cytoplasm. Furthermore, we found that DIPs were evenly distributed across different chromosomes and could be enriched in diversified gene ontology terms, while differential DIPs avoided to distribute on X-chromosome. Significantly up-regulated DIPs in PE were focused on the top functions of lipid metabolism, while 23 of these DIPs could form the top network regulating cellular movement, development, growth, and proliferation. Our results implicate that human PE placentas have disease-relevant differential DIPs, which reflect aberrantly aggregated proteins of placental tissues.
