Assessing the morphological characteristics of teeth and dental arches as potential predictors of dental crowding

Background and aims

The early detection of dental crowding and its potential for aggravation is important during the clinical examination of mixed dentition patients, and these desiderates can be addressed by including among the clinically assessed items a series of accessible morphological characteristics of teeth and dental arches. The present study investigates possible correlations between morphological features of permanent teeth, widths of dental arches, and the onset of dental crowding during mixed dentition.

Methods

A selected group of 100 class I dental casts on mixed dentition was analyzed. The dental arches were grouped as spaced, normally aligned, and crowded. The dental parameters consisted of mesiodistal dimensions of permanent teeth and specific morphological features of permanent incisors and first molars. The anterior and posterior arch widths according to Pont indices were measured.

Results

Statistical analysis of data showed that mesiodistal dimensions of the permanent upper central incisors and lower incisors are significantly larger on severely crowded arches than on normally aligned arches; increased differences between mesiodistal dimensions of central and lateral permanent upper incisors and the presence of semi-shavel incisors and Carabelli cusps are associated with a greater extent of anterior crowding. The severely crowded arches presented significantly narrower anterior and posterior arch widths.

Conclusions

Increased mesiodistal dimensions of permanent incisors, the presence of incisors shoveling, the Carabelli cusps on upper first permanent molars, and narrowing of dental arches during the early mixed dentition period were associated with severe dental crowding in class I cases.

Variability and Patterning in Permanent Tooth Dimensions among Four Ethnic Groups from the North-eastern States of India

Methods

The study was a comparative cross-sectional study among four different ethnic groups of North-east India among the age group of 20-30 years. Dimensions of the maxillary and mandibular teeth were measured with a digital Vernier calliper using the dental casts of 50 male and 50 female subjects from each of the four ethnic groups under study. The data were statistically analyzed using a Student's t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.

Results

The tooth dimensions of all four ethnic groups were significantly lower than the standard values except for the MD dimension of the maxillary second molars of the Singpho group (9.13 mm vs. 9.0 mm); mandibular central incisors of the Meitei group (5.01 mm vs. 5.0 mm); and mandibular lateral incisors of the Meitei, Ao, and Singpho groups (>standard value of 5.5 mm) and BL dimension of the mandibular first premolars of the Meitei and Ao groups (>standard value of 7.5 mm); mandibular second premolars of the Meitei and Singpho groups (>standard value of 8.0 mm); and mandibular second molars of the Ao group (10.04 mm vs. 10.0 mm). In some instances, the comparative analysis revealed group variations in different tooth dimensions among the four ethnic groups (p < 0.05).

Conclusion

Variations were observed in the tooth dimensions among the four ethnic groups and within the same population. Unlike other parts of India, the North-eastern population belongs to a distinct ethnic race of indigenous people of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Arctic region of North America. Hence, population-specific data for India's North-eastern region are necessary for forensic odontology, dental anthropology, routine dental practice, and effective treatment planning.

The Tooth Size Discrepancy among Orthodontic Patients and Normal Occlusion Individuals from Saudi Arabia: A Three-Dimensional Scan Analysis of Diagnostic Casts

Background/Purpose:

Tooth size discrepancy is one of the causative factors of malocclusion. This study aimed to establish the TDS among various malocclusion classes and normal occlusion subjects in a Southern Saudi population.

Materials and Methods:

The study casts of orthodontic patients from Southern Saudi Arabia (mean age: 19.6 years ± 2.45; n = 120) were randomly selected and grouped into eight equal classes based on Angle's classification and gender. An additional 30 study casts, devoid of malocclusion, having excellent intercuspation and class I occlusion, were grouped into two controls (n = 15) based on gender. The study casts were three-dimensional scanned to measure mesiodistal widths of all the teeth. The calculated anterior ratios (AR) and overall ratio (OR) were statistically analyzed with analysis of variance and t-tests.

Results:

There were no significant differences in “OR” and “AR” between the genders (P > 0.05) and among the malocclusion and control subgroups (P > 0.05). The mean “OR” (92.01 ± 0.18) and “AR” (78.60 ± 0.27) of the malocclusion group were significantly higher than that of Bolton's ratios (P > 0.05). The “AR” of the control group was significantly higher than Bolton's standards (P = 0.048). However, “OR” was no different (P = 0.105). Malocclusion patients displayed a discrepancy (±2 standard deviation) in “AR” of 22.5% and 'OR' of 6.7% from Bolton's mean (BM). Similarly, the control group displayed a discrepancy in “AR” of 20% and “OR” of 10% from BM.

Conclusion:

The mean “OR” and “AR” of the Southern Saudi population showed no sexual dimorphism and no significant difference among various malocclusion and control subgroups. The “AR” of the malocclusion and control subgroups did not comply with Bolton's standards.
