Abstract
Age-related vessel deterioration leads to changes in the structure and function of the heart and blood vessels, notably stiffening of vessel walls, increasing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), which accounts for 17.9 million global deaths annually. This study describes the fabrication of custom-made silicon vessels with varying mechanical properties (arterial stiffness). The primary objective of this study was to explore how changes in silicone formulations influenced vessel properties and their correlation with features extracted from signals obtained from photoplethysmography (PPG) reflectance sensors in an in vitro setting. Through alterations in the silicone formulations, it was found that it is possible to create elastomers exhibiting an elasticity range of 0.2 MPa to 1.22 MPa. It was observed that altering vessel elasticity significantly impacted PPG signal morphology, particularly reducing amplitude with increasing vessel stiffness (p < 0.001). A p-value of 5.176 × 10-15 and 1.831 × 10-14 was reported in the red and infrared signals, respectively. It has been concluded in this study that a femoral artery can be recreated using the silicone material, with the addition of a softener to achieve the required mechanical properties. This research lays the foundation for future studies to replicate healthy and unhealthy vascular systems. Additional pathologies can be introduced by carefully adjusting the elastomer materials or incorporating geometrical features consistent with various CVDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-related disorder, pharmaceutical interventions targeting the immune system do not stop or reverse disability progression; the major challenge for this condition. Studies show that disability progression in MS is associated with vascular comorbidity and brain volume loss, indicating that a multi-targeted approach is required to prevent debilitation. The aim of the present study was to examine the associations between vascular ultrasound, disability, biochemistry and lifestyle data in people with MS (pwMS). METHODS Extracranial vascular ultrasound was performed on 51 pwMS and 25 age-matched controls. Sonographic interrogation determined carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and abnormal blood flow patterns. Disability was assessed using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). Biochemical and lifestyle data were obtained for all participants. RESULTS The EDSS had a highly significant positive association with the cIMT of the right (r = 0.63; p = 0.001) and left (r = 0.49; p = 0.001) common carotid arteries and negative associations with the peak systolic blood flow velocity of the right vertebral artery (r = -0.42; p = 0.01) as well as end-diastolic velocity of the left internal carotid artery (r = -0.47; p = 0.01). These associations were significantly influenced by biochemical and lifestyle factors. Both cIMT and age showed significant associations with the EDSS. When cIMT was adjusted for age in a regression analysis, the association between the EDSS and the cIMT remained significant (p < 0.01), while the age association was reduced to being significant only at 10% (p = 0.06). There was no association between the use of MS medication and the EDSS (p = 0.56). CONCLUSION PwMS who had increased cIMT, a surrogate marker for atherosclerosis, and reduced carotid artery blood flow velocities were at risk for greater disability over and above the effect of aging. These findings provide important information for disease management and disability prevention in pwMS. Modification of diet and lifestyle may promote the unhindered flow of essential nutritional factors into the brain in pwMS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both the carotid Crouse score and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels are commonly used to evaluate atherosclerosis and vascular inflammatory response. This study was to investigate the correlation between the Crouse score and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and cerebral infarction (CI) in elderly diabetics. METHODS We compared the carotid Crouse scores and hs-CRP levels between 2 groups of diabetic patients with and without CIs (n=100 each) and the relationship between changes in these indices and CI. RESULTS Between the four groups (control, diabetic with a large CI, diabetic with a small CI, and diabetic with a lacunar CI) there was a significant difference in the age, sex, Crouse scores and hs-CRP levels, as well as fasting blood glucose and HbA1c (All P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis with CI as the dependent variable showed that the age (OR=1.114, 95% CI: 1.063-1.167, P=0.000), fasting blood glucose (OR=1.260, 95% CI: 1.102-1.570, P=0.039), HbA1c (OR=2.036, 95% CI: 1.348-3.703, P=0.001), Crouse score (OR=2.721, 95% CI: 1.800-4.114, P=0.000) and hs-CRP level (OR=3.364, 95% CI: 2.185-5.180, P=0.000) were risk factors for a CI in combination with diabetes mellitus. Significant differences were found in age, DBP, Crouse scores and hs-CRP levels between the male Diabetic-non-CI subgroup, female Diabetic-non-CI subgroup, male Diabetic-CI subgroup and female Diabetic-CI subgroup (All P<0.05). CONCLUSION The carotid Crouse score method has high reliability and reflects the severity of carotid atherosclerosis. The age, sex, FBG, HbA1c, Crouse score, an elevated hs-CRP level, and the occurrence of CI in elderly with diabetes mellitus are closely related. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract
Introduction Low albumin levels, high levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and high white blood cell count were risk factors for changes in arterial intima-media thickness (IMT). Femoral artery IMT damages were one of the common peripheral artery type 2 diabetes. This study was conducted to determine the association between femoral artery IMT and plasma albumin, hs-CRP levels, and white blood cell count in newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (nT2D). Materials and Methods From January 2015 to May 2020, 306 patients with nT2D were recruited for this cross-sectional descriptive study at Vietnam's National Endocrinology Hospital. We measured IMT by Doppler ultrasound. Results There was a statistically significant difference in albumin, hs-CRP levels, hs-CRP-to-albumin ratio, and white blood cell counts between three different IMT groups namely normal IMT, thick IMT, and atherosclerosis (p = 0.003, p = 0.001, p = 0.001 and p = 0.049, respectively). In the multivariate linear regression analysis, white blood cell count, and hs-CRP levels showed a significantly positive correlation to IMT (standardized B and p of 0.17, 0.015 and 0.163, 0.024, respectively), but albumin levels were a significantly negative correlation to IMT (standardized B = -0.151, p = 0.029). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that albumin (OR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.65-0.90, p = 0.018), hs-CRP (OR = 1.09, 95% CI 1.01-1.18, p = 0.026), and white blood cell count (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.03-1.81, p = 0.033) had correlation to atherosclerosis of femoral artery. Conclusion Reduced plasma albumin, elevated hs-CRP, and white blood cell count associated with IMT increased the odds for atherosclerosis of femoral artery among nT2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D (VD) deficiency has been related to several endocrine metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. The effect of VD supplementation on blood pressure (BP) in patients with diabetes is controversial. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate high-dose vitamin D supplementation effects on blood pressure of normotensive patients with diabetes mellitus 1 (DM1) patients by 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). METHODS We performed a clinical trial including 35 DM1 normotensive patients, who received doses of 4,000 or 10,000 IU/day of cholecalciferol for 12 weeks according to previous VD levels. They underwent 24-hour ABPM, along with glycated hemoglobin, creatine, lipids profile and PCRus dosage before and after VD supplementation. RESULTS We found an expressive reduction of systolic and diastolic morning blood pressures (117±14 vs 112±14, p<0,05; 74±9 vs 70±10 mmHg, p<0,05, respectively) with no changes in other pressoric markers. Besides, we noticed a relationship between levels of VD after supplementation and diastolic morning blood pressure (r= -0,4; p<0.05). CONCLUSION Our study suggests an association between supplementation of high doses of vitamin D and the reduction of morning blood pressure in normotensive DM1 patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Endothelium dysfunction and decrease of incretin effects occur early in type 2 diabetes mellitus and these changes contribute to diabetic cardiovascular complications such as atherosclerosis, thick intima-media, coronary, and peripheral arterial diseases. In patients with diabetes, the femoral artery is a site of a high incidence of injury in peripheral vascular diseases, and atherosclerotic changes may appear earlier in the femoral artery compared to the carotid artery. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of increased femoral artery intima-media thickness (IMT) and atherosclerotic plaque and their correlation with serum glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) levels in newly-diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on 332 patients with nT2D in the National Endocrinology Hospital, Vietnam from January 2015 to May 2018. IMT was measured by Doppler ultrasound and GLP-1 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All data were analyzed with SPSS version 26 for Windows (SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL). RESULTS Prevalence of thick femoral artery IMT and atherosclerotic plaque was 38.2 and 22.3%, respectively. There was a relationship between IMT and age, waist to hip ratio (WHR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting GLP-1, high sensitive CRP (hsCRP) and 24-hour microalbuminuria secretion (24-h MAUS). The fasting serum GLP-1 (fGLP-1) levels were reduced significantly in patients with thickness and atherosclerosis femoral artery (p = 0.001). After adjusting with other related factors, namely, DBP and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), whilst hsCRP and 24-h MAUS showed a significantly positive correlation to IMT (Standardized B and p of 0.242, 0.004 and 0.178, 0.043, respectively), fGLP-1 showed a significantly negative correlation to IMT (Standardized B = -0.288, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Among n2TD, the percentage for femoral artery thick IMT and atherosclerosis was 38.2% and 22.3% respectively, and serum GLP-1 was negatively correlated with thick IMT and atherosclerosis.
