The association between heavy metal exposure and erectile dysfunction in the United States

Association of the hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet score with the risk of Erectile dysfunction: a cross-sectional study

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is related to nutritional and inflammatory factors. The hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet score (HALP), a new index reflecting the nutritional and inflammatory status, has been associated with a higher risk of diabetic retinopathy, particularly at lower values (≤ 42.9). However, studies focusing on the relationship between HALP and ED risk are scarce. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the association between HALP and ED. Data were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2001 and 2004. Based on self-reported data, participants were classified into either the ED group or the non-ED group. Next, the HALP score was categorized into four quartiles (Q1-4). Weighted multivariate regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between categorical HALP and ED risk. Additionally, restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was conducted to examine the association between continuous HALP scores and ED risk. Furthermore, subgroup analyses were conducted to examine the association between categorical HALP and the risk of ED based on age, as well as the status of hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Finally, a mediation analysis was carried out to investigate the mediating effect of HALP and related parameters on the association between urinary cobalt levels and ED. Initially, the data of 21,161 participants were collected. After implementing the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 3406 participants were included in the final analyses. Weighted multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that the Q4 HALP group was associated with a lower risk of ED (OR 0.96, 95% confidence intervals 0.92-1.00, P = 0.037). Meanwhile, RCS analysis showed that HALP was nonlinearly associated with the risk of ED. In addition, subgroup analyses demonstrated that participants in the Q3/4 HALP group had a significantly lower ED risk than those in the Q1 group among patients aged ≥ 50 years, as well as those with hypertension and diabetes. Lastly, mediation analysis revealed that HALP and its associated parameters had a marginal average causal mediation effect on the relationship between urinary cobalt levels and ED risk (P > 0.05). In US adults, high HALP scores were correlated with a lower risk of ED. The relationship was more pronounced in participants aged ≥ 50 years with hypertension and diabetes. Furthermore, HALP and its parameters may not mediate the association between urinary cobalt levels and ED risk.

Correlation between visceral fat metabolism score and erectile dysfunction: a cross-sectional study from NHANES 2001-2004

Backgrounds

The factors associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) are diverse, and obesity is a significant component. Metabolic Score for Visceral Fat (METS-VF) can assess obesity more accurately than body mass index (BMI). However, the association between METS-VF and ED remains unclear.

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the association between the METS-VF and ED using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2004 data.

Methods

Data were sourced from NHANES 2001-2004. The relationship between METS-VF and ED was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression, followed by subgroup analyses to identify sensitive populations. Nonlinear correlation was evaluated through smoothed curve fitting, and a threshold effect analysis validated the findings. Comparative logistic regression of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve assessed the diagnostic capability of METS-VF against the classical obesity index for ED.

Results

The study enrolled 3625 participants, of whom 961 self-reported ED history and 360 reported severe ED. After adjusting for confounders, METS-VF exhibited a positive association with asthma prevalence (OR= 3.47, 95% CI: 2.83, 14.24). Stratification based on median METS-VF revealed higher ED prevalence in participants with elevated METS-VF (OR= 2.81,95% CI:2.32, 3.41). Nonlinear correlation was observed, with a significant association between METS-VF and ED when METS-VF exceeded 6.63. Subgroup analysis highlighted a stronger correlation in participants aged 50-85 years, Caucasians, hypertensive individuals, diabetics, and those with coronary heart disease. Sensitivity analysis using severe ED as the outcome reaffirmed the nonlinear positive association with METS-VF (OR=3.86, 95% CI:2.80,5.33), particularly when METS-VF surpassed 6.68.

Conclusion

Elevated METS-VF was nonlinearly correlated with increased ED incidence. Individuals with METS-VF above 6.63 should be vigilant about heightened ED risk. Special attention should be given to participants aged 50-85 years, Caucasians, hypertensive individuals, diabetics, and those with coronary heart disease.

Association of serum uric acid levels with benign prostatic hyperplasia in US men: results from NHANES 2005-2008

BACKGROUND

The relationship between uric acid (UA) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is controversial and has rarely been studied in American populations.

METHODS

Data from two cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, comprising data from 2005 to 2008, were used. The majority of BPH were identified by self-report. We investigated the relationship between UA and BPH using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.

RESULTS

2,845 participants were enrolled in the study, including 531 participants with BPH and 2,314 controls. After fully adjusting for all confounders, the risk of developing BPH was reduced by 18% for every 100 μmol/L increase in UA (OR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.69-0.97, p = 0.023). Participants in the highest quartile of UA were found to have a reduced likelihood of developing BPH (ORQ4vs1 = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.41-0.91) in comparison to those in the lowest quartile of UA. Subgroup analyses found that among those younger than 60 years, non-Hispanic whites, former smokers, heavy drinkers, those without diabetes, or those with hypertension, high UA remained negatively associated with BPH.

CONCLUSIONS

The above results suggest that UA may be a potential protective factor for BPH, but the mechanism needs to be further explored.

Association between the Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index and Prostate Cancer

The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is a novel and integrated marker that has not been studied with prostate cancer. We aimed to ascertain the association between SII levels and prostate cancer. We utilized data from the 1999-2010 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the relationship between SII and prostate cancer. Additionally, subgroup analyses stratified by age, BMI, history of hypertension and diabetes were performed. A total of 8,020 participants were included in our analysis. After full adjustment, SII was associated with a 7% increased risk of prostate cancer (OR 1.07, 95% CI 0.99-1.15, p = 0.094). We further categorized SII values into three segments and found that individuals in the highest SII group had a 33% increased risk of prostate cancer than those in the tertile 1 group (OR 1.33; 95% CI 1.01-1.81; p = 0.044; P for trend = 0.046). In addition, a higher SII level was associated with a 137% increased risk of prostate cancer in the diabetes subgroup (OR 2.37; 95% CI 1.08-5.21; p = 0.031). The current study suggested that SII was positively associated with increased risks of prostate cancer. The SII might be an easily accessible indicator for identifying prostate cancer.

The association of various physical activities with erectile dysfunction: NHANES 2001-2004

Background

The relationship between erectile dysfunction (ED) and physical activity has been established in several previous studies, but there is little information on the specific forms of activity that affect ED.

Aim

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship of 4 exercise categories and 2 activity intensities with ED in US men.

Methods

We used data sets from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2004. We used odds ratios (ORs) and multivariate logistic regression models to investigate the relationship between physical activity and ED. We also conducted subgroup analyses by age and controlled for potential confounder variables using propensity score matching analyses.

Outcomes

The primary outcome was ED as assessed through self-reporting.

Results

An overall 4094 adult men were included in the study. Adjusted multivariate regression models indicated that men who participated in monthly muscle-strengthening activities (OR = 0.75, P = .031), leisure activities (OR = 0.76, P = .024), or vigorous activities (OR = 0.64, P = .001) had a lower risk of ED. The subgroup analysis showed that among those ≥40 years old, muscle-strengthening activity (OR = 0.67, P = .005), leisure activity (OR = 0.72, P = .006), and vigorous activity (OR = 0.50, P < .001) were negatively associated with ED. After adjustment of propensity score matching, leisure activity and vigorous activity were also associated with a lower risk of ED, and muscle-strengthening activity was not significantly associated with ED.

Clinical Implications

Our findings could provide guidance to clinicians in helping patients with ED develop exercise programs.

Strengths and Limitations

We explored the relationship of 4 types and 2 intensities of exercise with ED, using a large sample size and sampling weights to produce representative data. However, this is only a cross-sectional study.

Conclusion

Active monthly participation in leisure and vigorous activity is associated with the maintenance of erectile function, while the relevance of muscle-strengthening activities needs further study.

National analysis of urinary cadmium concentration and kidney stone: Evidence from NHANES (2011–2020)

Background

The association between urinary cadmium and kidney stone risk is inconsistent in previous studies, which needs further exploration. This study was performed to explore the association between urinary cadmium and kidney stone.

Materials and methods

Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011–2020) were included and further analyzed. Urinary cadmium was stratified into quartiles with quartile 1 (Q1: 0.025–0.104 μg/L) and quartile 4 (Q4: 0.435–7.581 μg/L). Further weighted logistic regression was adopted to evaluate the association between urinary cadmium and kidney stone. A subgroup analysis was used to verify the findings. The non-linear association was examined using the restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression.

Results

A total of 9,056 adults aged 20 years and above were included in this study. In the fully adjusted model, an increased risk of kidney stones was identified for quartile 2 (OR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.06–1.84, P &lt; 0.05), quartile 3 (OR = 1.18, 95% CI = 0.88–1.59, P &gt; 0.05), and quartile 4 (OR = 1.54, 95% CI = 1.10–2.06, P &lt; 0.05). A similar association was found between continuous cadmium increase and OR of kidney stones in the fully adjusted model (OR = 1.13, 95% CI = 1.01–1.26, P &lt; 0.05). The RCS also indicated a non-linear association between urinary cadmium concentration and kidney stone risk (P for non-linear &lt; 0.001).

Conclusion

In summary, cadmium exposure is identified as a risk factor for kidney stones in this study. Their non-linear association makes demands on early intervention for the cadmium-exposed population. Medical interventions for kidney stone prevention should take cadmium exposure into account.
