Placenta Donation - The Expectant Mother's View

The placenta has been used in different facets of medicine however some low-income countries are yet to apply these uses for different reasons. A cross-sectional study of 150 expectant mothers attending antenatal clinic was conducted to determine the willingness to donate the placenta. Analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20 with a level of significance set at P ≤ .05. The mean age of the participants was 32.3 (SD±5.0) years. Almost all (98.7%) were married while 89.3% had tertiary-level education. The majority (82.7%) knew there was no connection between the placenta and baby after delivery; however, only 12.0% knew about placenta donation and 10.0% were willing to donate the placenta at delivery. About three quarters (74.0%) were unwilling to promote the donation of the placenta, most (55.0%) believed that the placenta was used for rituals, while some (19.0%) thought placenta donation would affect the child's future. Participants' occupation, 'knowledge about placenta donation and its uses' and willingness to promote donation were all significantly associated with their willingness to donate (P < .05). Willingness to donate the placenta at delivery was low in this study. Participants' occupation and their knowledge were some factors influencing willingness to donate the placenta for medical use.

Determinants of the intention to donate umbilical cord blood in pregnant women

Background and Objectives

Umbilical cord blood (UCB) donation is a behaviour promoted by many countries' health systems. However, UCB donation is not a widespread behaviour among expectant mothers, and little is known about the reasons that may lead to it. The aim of the present study was to analyse the contribution of Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) variables among both primiparous and multiparous women in predicting intention to donate UCB.

Materials and Methods

Three hundred seventy‐six expectant mothers completed questionnaires that captured sociodemographic data, parity, previous donation, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control (PBC) and intention to donate UCB. Multigroup analysis structural equation modelling was conducted using Mplus (version 8.02).

Results

Multigroup path analyses showed that intentions were strongly predicted by subjective norms and moderately predicted by positive attitudes and PBC in both primiparous and multiparous women. TPB constructs explained 71% of the variance in intentions for both groups.

Conclusions

Future interventions to increase intention to donate among primiparous and multiparous women could primarily consider the influence of partner and significant others in determining positive intentions and secondarily target increasing positive attitudes and perceptions of control.

How Knowledge about Stem Cells Influences Attitudes towards Breastfeeding: Case Study of Polish Women

Maternal breastfeeding is associated with multiple health benefits, both for the child and the mother. Since breastfeeding rates are declining, finding new, future-oriented strategies to strengthen and support mothers' positive attitudes towards breastfeeding need to be developed. In this paper, we describe how information about the presence of stem cells in breast milk can influence the willingness to breastfeed in the population of Polish pregnant women. A cross-sectional study involving a group of 150 pregnant women was conducted to assess the correlation between their knowledge about stem cells and their attitude towards breastfeeding. Among the respondents, only 6% claimed that they did not know anything about stem cells, but general knowledge about stem cells in the research group was poor. The survey results indicated that city residence, university degree, maternal experience and advanced pregnancy correlated with higher general knowledge regarding stem cells. Most respondents (77.3%) had no knowledge regarding the presence of stem cells in breast milk. Approximately two-thirds of mothers with earlier negative breastfeeding experience declared that information about the presence of stem cells in breast milk could have influenced the decision to continue and extend the time of breastfeeding. Hence highlighting the presence of stem cells in breast milk can be used to encourage breastfeeding as a unique activity.
