Risk Factors Associated with Head Lice Infestation in Rural Pediatric Patients

Exploring the lived experiences of adolescent girls affected by head lice infestation: a qualitative descriptive study

BACKGROUND

Head lice infestation is a prevalent dermatological condition among adolescent girls, which has wide-ranging adverse physical, psychological, and emotional effects on their lives. However, these experiences have been sparsely documented. This study aimed to investigate the lived experiences of Iranian adolescent girls regarding head lice infestation.

METHODS

In this phenomenological study, a purposive sampling technique was employed to select 15 adolescent girls who were experiencing head lice infestation. Collaboration was established with local schools to identify and recruit the participants. Subsequently, the purpose and nature of the study were explained to the identified participants and their guardians. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted to gather the necessary data. The collected data underwent analysis using Colaizzi's seven-step method. To enhance the credibility of the findings, Lincoln and Guba's (2004) criteria were applied. The management of the data was facilitated through the utilization of MAXQDA software version 0.9.5.

RESULTS

The average age of the participants, aged 12 to 17, was 14.5 (standard deviation = 1.7). In terms of education, the majority of them had completed upper secondary education (n = 8, 53.3%), followed by lower secondary education (n = 4, 26.6%). The participants' experiences were categorized into four main themes and 15 sub-themes. The main themes included living in the shadow of fear, torment of infestation, "struggling with head lice, and disturbing ramifications. The sub-themes encompassed social fear, fear of harm, fear of beauty decline, stigma, bullying behavior, self-blame, adversity, challenging struggle, effective coping, nonconforming behavior, family disruption, academic disruption, health threats, and confused mental state.

CONCLUSION

During head lice infestation, adolescent girls endured negative experiences and extensive fears, considering it a significant ordeal. They encountered multiple challenges while dealing with lice and utilized both adaptive and maladaptive strategies to cope with the infestation. It is recommended to enhance public awareness regarding head lice infestation, and healthcare providers should offer emotional support and counseling services to affected girls and their families.

Head lice infestation and the role of some cognitive-behavioral factors in its spread and prevention among adolescent girls: A cross-sectional study in Northwest Iran

Background and Aims

Head lice is a public health problem of worldwide distribution, particularly among school children and girls. Head lice infestation (HLI) can lead to negative social and psychological outcomes such as distress and anxiety in children and their families. Hence, the present study aimed to investigate the role of cognitive-behavioral factors in its spread and prevention among adolescent girls.

Methods

The cross-sectional study was conducted among 276 school-aged adolescent girls from September 2022 to January 2023 in Herris, a city located in Northwest Iran. A multistage cluster random sample was used to recruit adolescent girls in secondary schools. Two schools were randomly selected from five secondary schools. Then, students in each school were randomly selected from a school list. Data were collected using a valid and reliable questionnaire.

Results

The high protective behaviors were significantly associated with the number of family members (ß = 0.158; p value = 0.012). An additional 21.8% of the variation in preventive behaviors was explained by cognitive factors as predictor variables (p value > 0.05). Perceived collective family efficacy, perceived barriers, perceived self-efficacy, and response efficacy were predictors of head lice preventive behaviors, respectively. Among all variables, perceived collective family efficacy was the strongest predictor.

Conclusions

The findings of current research support the determinants of the cognitive-behavioral factors in the spread and prevention of HLI. It is better to involve these factors in school-based educational programs by policymakers and healthcare providers.

Prevalence of head louse infestation among primary schoolchildren in the Republic of Korea: nationwide observation of trends in 2011-2019

Head louse infestation is a significant public health problem across the world, particularly among preschool and primary schoolchildren. This study investigated the trends of head louse infestation in the Republic of Korea over a 9-year period (2011-2019), targeting primary schoolchildren in 3 areas of Seoul, 4 other large cities, and 9 provinces. A survey was administered annually by the health staff of each regional office (n= 16) of the Korea Association of Health Promotion (KAHP). The branch offices of KAHP examined a total of 51,508 primary schoolchildren, comprising 26,532 boys and 24,976 girls. Over the 9-year survey, a total of 1,107 (2.1%) schoolchildren tested positive for adults and/or nits of Pediculus humanus capitis. The prevalence was 2.8% (133/4,727) in 2011-2012 and gradually decreased to 0.8% (49/6,461) in 2019 (P< 0.05). Head lice were found more frequently in girls (3.0%; 746/24,976) than in boys (1.4%; 361/26,532) (P< 0.05). In terms of geographic localities, the highest infestation rate, 4.7% (average prevalence over 9 years), was observed in southern Seoul (Gangnam branch of KAHP), whereas the lowest infestation rate, 0.7%, was seen in Gyeongsang (north and south provinces) and western Seoul. Although the prevalence decreased significantly during the 9-year period, head louse infestation remains a health and hygiene issue among primary schoolchildren in the Republic of Korea. Regular surveys along with health education are needed to further improve children's hair hygiene.

Head Lice Infestation in Schoolchildren, in Poland-Is There a Chance for Change?

Pediculosis capitis is a current and neglected health issue worldwide. The lack of screening programs contributes to the marginalization of the problem and delays therapeutic measures. Our study aimed to analyze the occurrence of this parasitosis in primary schools in Poland and to determine factors contributing to the persistence of its foci. The research tools were two questionnaires: one for primary school children and the other for school managers. While children answered questions about the epidemiology of pediculosis capitis and expressed their opinion on the hygienic condition of infested persons, the school directors were asked about the occurrence of head lice in schools, preventive measures, and institutions supporting schools in combating the infestation. The survey covered the period 2014–2018. Pediculosis capitis was reported in 87.5% of the schools. The greatest number of cases was reported in the group of 6–9 year-olds (68%). Among 4970 children, 16.7% had no knowledge of head lice; however, 57.1% wanted to increase their awareness of the problem. Campaigns on lice were conducted mainly as a result of emerging pediculosis capitis cases, and most schools could not rely on institutional support. Screening programs and preventive educational campaigns should be part of pediculosis capitis control in Poland.

Nosocomial Infections: Do Not Forget the Parasites!

Nosocomial infections (NIs) pose an increasing threat to public health. The majority of NIs are bacterial, fungal, and viral infections; however, parasites also play a considerable role in NIs, particularly in our increasingly complex healthcare environment with a growing proportion of immunocompromised patients. Moreover, parasitic infections acquired via blood transfusion or organ transplantation are more likely to have severe or fatal disease outcomes compared with the normal route of infection. Many of these infections are preventable and most are treatable, but as the awareness for parasitic NIs is low, diagnosis and treatment are often delayed, resulting not only in higher health care costs but, importantly, also in prolonged courses of disease for the patients. For this article, we searched online databases and printed literature to give an overview of the causative agents of parasitic NIs, including the possible routes of infection and the diseases caused. Our review covers a broad spectrum of cases, ranging from widely known parasitic NIs, like blood transfusion malaria or water-borne cryptosporidiosis, to less well-known NIs, such as the transmission of Strongyloides stercoralis by solid organ transplantation or nosocomial myiasis. In addition, emerging NIs, such as babesiosis by blood transfusion or person-to-person transmitted scabies, are described.
