Examining the Backpack Weight Relative to Students' Body Weight Among Urban and Rural Schoolchildren: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background Schoolbags or backpacks have been an essential part of the education system for a long time. However, a hefty backpack causes the child to arch the back excessively or bend their head and trunk forward to withstand the weight of the schoolbag. If the student carries the backpack on one shoulder, he/she bends to the opposite side to compensate for the extra weight, which may damage the shoulders and spine. Considering these factors, the main aim of this study was to investigate the percentage of backpack weight in proportion to the student's body weight regarding the new guidelines among urban and rural schoolchildren aged 12 to 15 years in Bangalore, Karnataka. Methodology In southern India, over a year, a cross-sectional study was conducted with 500 students who voluntarily participated after providing written consent. They completed a questionnaire, underwent vital and anthropometric measurements, and had their weights measured, including the weights of their backpacks. Sample bags were inspected to determine contributing weight factors and evaluate adherence to timetables. Results The average weight carried by children of all ages was 6.53 kg, averaging 13.53% of their body weight. Among males, the percentage carrying backpacks weighing over 10% of their body weight was 80.9%, while among females, it was 85.7%. Of all the males carrying bags weighing more than 10% of their body weight, 67.7% attended government schools, while 32.3% attended private schools. Among females studying in government schools, 63.6% carried backpacks weighing more than 10% of their body weight, while among those in private schools, 36.4% carried bags exceeding that weight. Conclusions The study concluded that despite regulations being implemented on backpack weight for children, a significant number still carry bags exceeding 10% of their body weight among both urban and rural school children. This could elevate pressure on neck and back muscles, leading to excessive fatigue and potential damage to the skeletal system, ultimately contributing to spinal deformities.

Impact of Educational Intervention in Reducing the Weight of School Bags in Selected School Children

To assess the effectiveness of educational intervention to reduce the weight of school bags.

Material and Methods

The study design was one group pre- and posttest experimental Research design.

Place and Duration of Study

Government Senior Secondary School Dhanas, Chandigarh, and Shri Guru Harkrishan Model Senior Secondary School Sector-38D, Chandigarh (A private school) between July and November 2018. Names of the schools can be avoided. Total 760 students from selected sections nursery to 10th class of school were enrolled in the study. At baseline and end line weight of children, school bags and its content were weighed using weighing scale. Length of bag strap, breath of bag, torso of children, and their shoulders size were measured by measuring tape. Bag carrying style, posture, etc., were observed by observation checklist. Interviewed children (5th to 10th class) were using Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire for musculoskeletal system assessment. Educational intervention was provided to the children for one month to reduce weight of school bag by teaching in assembly and displaying the charts in school. (Use of softbound thin textbooks, breaking thin books in 2-3 thin softbound books, use lightweight bag, pencil box, lunch box, and water bottles. Pack bag as per timetable.).

Result

The result revealed that heavy school bags were carrying 69.7% children from government school and 80.2% from private school. Children carrying heavy bags reported musculoskeletal problems 5 times higher than their counterparts. After intervention, there was significant reduction in the weight of school bags (P < 0.001 as per paired t-test). Provide the weight of the bags before and after intervention in addition to the P value.

Conclusion

Children carrying heavy bags were suffering from musculoskeletal problems. Intervention helped in reducing the weight of school bag.

Development and Experimental Verification of an Ergonomic Backpack

Carrying a heavy school backpack has extensively been reported as a prime cause of children's body strain. It is suggested that the load should not exceed 10 percent of the child's body weight; however, ensuring this requires continuous monitoring. The study explores how ergonomically designed school backpack based on the user anthropometric data (n = 280) and ergonomic parameters help reduce force concentration on shoulders and back. It provides a validation process of the developed prototype by experimental verification. The developed design was assessed in a comparison experiment with a commercially available local school backpack. An experimental study was used which recruited thirty healthy college students (aged 19 to 23 years). Two independent variables evaluated were school backpack type (developed backpack versus commercial one) and load levels as a percentage of body weight. Three load levels were employed 10%, 15%, and 20%. These variables were measured on the responses: bag comfort scale and the percent of maximum voluntary contraction (%MVC) of six muscles (right and left of erector spine, right and left of external abdominal oblique muscle, and right and left of trapezius). The developed backpack provided astonishing performance at levels of 15% and 20% of body weight in terms of subjective measure and electromyography (EMG) responses. It also showed that increasing the carried weight more than 10% result in reducing activity on the erector spinal muscles, while it increases on abdominal oblique muscles. The developed backpack design confirmed the efficiency of its bases by distributing the carried weight among the trunk through side pockets, attached to the body through two upper and lower straps. It helped the body to distribute the carried weight and avoid concentrating pressure on specific areas.
