The Relationship between Health Literacy Dimensions and Perceived Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in Middle-Aged Iranian Women

Association between health literacy and self-management among middle-aged women: A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to review and synthesize the literature on the association between health literacy (HL) and self-management in middle-aged women aged 35-64 years and examine the definitions and measurements of HL.

METHODS

Eleven electronic databases were used for searching specific terms. Experimental and non-experimental studies in English or Korean were included based on the eligibility criteria. Two authors independently conducted study selection, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment.

RESULTS

One experimental and 13 non-experimental studies were included. Of the 11 studies that defined HL, nine conceptualized it as reflecting multidimensional HL. Four studies measured HL capturing all dimensions of the concept (i.e., accessing, understanding, appraising, and applying) and two studies used context-specific HL measurements. Women with greater HL challenges generally had lower self-management context, process, and outcomes across the health continuum.

CONCLUSIONS

Enhancing HL is a critical strategy for improving self-management in middle-aged women. Future research should investigate the effectiveness of HL interventions on self-management considering multidimensional definitions and measures of HL.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Health professionals should be alert to middle-aged women's HL and implement HL interventions that provide them with opportunities to access, understand, analyze, and utilize health-related information to effectively improve HL and engage in self-management.

Factors Related to Health Literacy Among the Iranian Population: A Scoping Review

Background

The identification of the determinants of health literacy is an essential prerequisite for developing health literacy promotion programs. While these factors have been reported in previous studies, there is a lack of a comprehensive review specifically focused on the Iranian population. Therefore, this review aimed to identify the factors related to health literacy in Iran.

Methods

This scoping review used the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework and the Joanna Briggs Institute framework. A search was performed in English-language databases-Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed-using the MeSH keyword of "health literacy," and in Persian-language databases-Magirean and SID-using the related keywords. A narrative synthesis was conducted to describe all included studies' characteristics and explore factors associated with health literacy.

Results

A total of 76 studies were included. Based on the results of the study, related factors included personal factors-including sex, age, education level, field of study, parents' education level, marital status, occupation, work experience, employment status, ethnicity, income, socioeconomic status, medical history, duration of disease, addiction, number of children, media literacy, information literacy, computer literacy, and self-efficacy-situational factors-including use of the internet, use of social networks, social support, source of information, and participation in health education classes-and societal and environmental factors-including place of residence and type of insurance.

Conclusion

Modifiable factors identified in this study were self-efficacy, social support, information sources, media literacy, information literacy, computer literacy, internet or social networks, and participation in health education classes. Planners can consider these factors when developing interventions to promote health literacy.

Fitting Health Care to People: Understanding and Adapting to the Epidemiology and Health Literacy of People Affected by Viral Hepatitis from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Migrant Backgrounds

This study explored the epidemiology and health literacy of people affected by viral hepatitis (VH) from migrant culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds attending a community-based general practitioner and specialty hepatology shared-care (HEPREACH) clinic in Brisbane, Australia. Patient-reported data on health literacy and clinical information from adult patients (n = 66) of CALD background recruited from the liver clinic were analyzed. Health literacy was assessed using a 5-question, 12-point scale. Variance weighted multiple linear regression was used to identify factors associated with knowledge about VH. About three-quarters of patients (74.2%) were diagnosed with hepatitis B. The median knowledge score was 7.8 (interquartile range [IQR] 6‒9). One in five patients did not understand the infective nature of VH, 30.3% did not understand mother-to-child transmission risk, and 30-40% of patients thought activities such as kissing, sharing food or mosquito bites could spread VH. Only 6% of patients understood the risk of liver cancer and the need for regular screening. Higher educational level (secondary, β = 4.8, p < 0.0001 or tertiary, β = 8.1, p < 0.0001 vs. primary) was associated with better knowledge, and transition through a refugee camp (vs. not, β = - 1.2, p = 0.028) and country of diagnosis (overseas vs. Australia, β = - 1.9, p = 0.016) were associated with poorer knowledge. Country of origin, refugee status and opportunities for tertiary education impact patients' understanding of VH. Ensuring delivery of culturally appropriate care and education is critical to improve knowledge, reduce misconceptions to improve care and outcomes for VH in CALD migrant communities.
