Relationship between learning styles and clinical competency in nursing students

BACKGROUND

The acquisition of clinical competence is considered the ultimate goal of nursing education programs. This study explored the relationship between learning styles and clinical competency in undergraduate nursing students.

METHODS

A descriptive-correlational study was conducted in 2023 with 276 nursing students from the second to sixth semesters at Abhar School of Nursing, Zanjan University of Medical Sciences, Iran. Data were collected using demographic questionnaires, Kolb's learning styles, and Meretoja's clinical competence assessments completed online by participants. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 16, employing descriptive statistics and inferential tests (independent T-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation) at a significance level 0.05.

RESULTS

The predominant learning styles among nursing students were divergent (31.2%), and the least common was convergent (18.4%). The overall clinical competency score was 77.25 ± 12.65. Also, there was a significant relationship between learning styles and clinical competency, so the clinical competency of students with accommodative and converging learning styles was higher. (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The results of this study showed the association between learning styles and clinical competence in nursing students. It is recommended that educational programs identify talented students and provide workshops tailored to strengthen various learning styles associated with enhanced clinical competence.

Self-directed learning and clinical competence: The mediating role of the clinical learning environment

Introduction

Recognizing the factors affecting clinical competence among internship nursing students is crucial. This study was aimed at determining the effects of self-directed learning on internship nursing students' clinical competence under the mediating role of the clinical learning environment.

Methods

This cross-sectional research was performed on 300 internship nursing students selected by convenience sampling with a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. Data were collected in one stage with three tools: the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale for Nursing Education, Education Environment Measure, and Clinical Competence Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed in SPSS version 21 and Smart-PLS version 3 with partial least squares-SEM. Measurement and structural model data were assessed with a significance threshold of p < 0.05.

Results

A total of 20.5 % of the variance in clinical competence was explained by self-directed and clinical learning environments. Self-directed learning had a significant positive effect on clinical competence (path coefficient = 0.14, 95 % CI: 0.02, 0.26; p = 0.027), and on the clinical learning environment (path coefficient = 0.41, 95 % CI: 0.31, 0.52; p < 0.001). A relationship was observed between the clinical learning environment and clinical competence (path coefficient = 0.38, 95 % CI: 0.25, 0.50; p < 0.001). The indirect effect of self-directed learning on clinical competence was positive and significant (path coefficient = 0.11, 95 % CI: 0.07, 0.17; p < 0.001). Self-directed learning had a significant total effect on clinical competence (path coefficient = 0.30, 95 % CI: 0.19, 0.40; p < 0.001).

Conclusions

According to the results, we recommend that nursing education managers and instructors consider plans to enhance self-directed learning among nursing students and improve the clinical learning environment.

Factors affecting the development of clinical nurses' competency: A systematic review

AIM

To synthesize and analyze the literature on nursing clinical competence to assess the factors affecting nursing clinical competency.

BACKGROUND

Nursing competence affects not only patients but also nurses themselves. Competent nurses contribute to patient safety. Prioritizing clinical competency enables nurses to deliver high-quality care. Clinical nursing competency is influenced by various factors including education and training, experience, professional development, clinical judgment, decision-making skills and communication.

DESIGN

This was a systematic review.

METHODS

This study utilized an extensive literature search of online databases, including SCOPUS, Web of Science and PubMed. This review followed the guidelines provided by the Effective Practice and Organization of Care (EPOC) Cochrane Group and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement.

RESULTS

This systematic review provided 20 valuable articles, with a total of 6273 participants across the 20 studies, including 18 cross-sectional studies and two descriptive-correlational studies, predominantly using quantitative research methods. The analysis revealed several key factors that significantly affect nurses' clinical competency. These factors included years of experience, workplace environment, theoretical knowledge and educational level, marital status, clinical training, job satisfaction, turnover intention, job stress and critical thinking.

CONCLUSIONS

Understanding and addressing these factors are crucial for enhancing nurses' clinical competence and ultimately improving patient outcomes. Further research and interventions should be directed towards promoting supportive work environments, continuous education and the development of critical thinking skills among nurses to optimize their clinical competencies.

Effectiveness of pediatric learning modules in enhancing competencies among nurses in a specialized unit

The global shortage of highly competent nurses has forced healthcare organizations to adapt to various strategies, including rotating nurses to different units, impacting their competency levels. To equip nurses with the needed competencies, the researchers developed the pediatric learning modules and conducted this study to analyze their effectiveness. Researchers employed purposive and random sampling to identify study participants, and utilized a mixed-method design, including Solomon Four Group Design and a narrative approach. A researcher-made evaluation questionnaire, competency checklists, and guide questions for a written narrative were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics and factorial analysis of covariance were utilized for data analysis. The outcomes revealed that demographic variables have no effect on knowledge and competence (p > 0.05). It was also discovered that exposure to learning modules enhanced the competence levels of nurses who were inexperienced in the pediatric setting (F = 41.183, df = 1, p = 0.000). Furthermore, results revealed that enhancing knowledge and competencies is not wholly dependent on well-structured educational sessions and training modules, but is also influenced by other factors, including time allocation for module delivery, protected time to practice, and the opportunity to apply new skills in the clinical area.

Challenges of objective structured clinical examination in undergraduate nursing curriculum: Experiences of faculties and students

BACKGROUND

Assessment of clinical competence of nursing students is necessary to ensure safe practice and the realization of professional clinical standards. An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is commonly used internationally in nursing education programs to assess clinical competence, but is a new process in Iranian nursing curricula.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to explore and describe challenges associated with OSCE implementation based on the experiences of faculty members and nursing students, with the objective of further improving the assessment of clinical competence in nursing education.

DESIGN

This study used a qualitative approach that included thematic analysis of the transcribed interviews.

SETTING

Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (TBZMED), Tabriz, Iran.

PARTICIPANTS

Purposive sampling was used to select eighteen faculty members and fifteen students from those interested. These participants represent a reasonable cross-section of those who had participated in the OSCE.

METHODS

A pre-developed interview guide was used to inform semi-structured in-depth interviews. These were recorded and analyzed using the 6-phase thematic analysis method as described by Braun and Clarke (2013). Themes were independently verified.

RESULTS

Challenges identified by participants around OSCEs as part of undergraduate nursing education were extracted from the interview data. Two main themes were evident from the data: 1) shortcomings in executive and technical infrastructure, 2) shortcomings in educational infrastructure. These themes reflected both student and faculty experiences. These also aligned with themes that commonly emerge in related literature.

CONCLUSION

The study findings illustrate several key challenges associated with organizing and implementing OSCEs and so provides unique insights into the development of strategies to implementing and promoting OSCEs in nursing education. We recommend that managers and authorities in nursing education focus on these challenges and explore processes to successfully introduce this exam for assessment of nursing student capacity.

Relationship Between Undergraduate Nursing Students' Self-directed Learning and Training Demands for Nursing Information Systems: A Cross-sectional Study

Self-directed learning refers to an approach to acquiring knowledge and skills in which learners take responsibility for themselves. Currently, it is a feasible way to familiarize with nursing information systems, which are essential components of hospital information systems and widely used in clinical nursing. This study assessed undergraduate nursing students' self-directed learning of nursing information systems and explored influencing factors, using a cross-sectional design and a convenience sample. Participants voluntarily completed a general information questionnaire, a training demands questionnaire for nursing information systems, and the Self-rating Scale for Self-directed Learning, which measured the level of self-directed learning. A total of 353 valid surveys were analyzed, among which 51.8% agreed with the necessity of mastering nursing information systems. Nursing students present a moderate level of self-directed learning, with an advantage in interpersonal skills and a deficiency in learning activities. Students' training demands, confidence in using nursing information systems in clinical practice, attitude toward nursing as a career, and academic performance were identified as predictors of self-directed learning for nursing information systems. Future cross-national research, studies about other factors, and ways to improve formal education are needed.
