Mediating Role of Affective Experiences in the Relationship between Perceived Social Support and Life Satisfaction among Breast Cancer Patients

The Association between Relationship Satisfaction Concordance and Breast Cancer Survivors' Physical and Psychosocial Well-Being

The purpose of this article is to examine the association of relationship satisfaction concordance between breast cancer survivors (BCSs) and their partners with matched controls on physical and psychosocial outcomes. Dyads of BCSs, age-matched controls, and partners were recruited as part of a larger, cross-sectional QOL survey study. Relationship concordance was measured by the ENRICH marital satisfaction score, with each dyad's score equaling the absolute value of the difference in satisfaction between survivor/control and their partner (lower score = greater concordance). Dependent variables for survivors/controls were social constraint, physical function, depression, fatigue, attention function, and sleep disturbance. Relationship satisfaction and concordance were used as the primary independent variables, while controlling for dyad category, race, education, income, and age within multiple linear regression models. The sample consisted of 387 dyads (220 BCSs, 167 controls). Relationship satisfaction concordance ranged from 0 to 53.4 (mean = 10.2). The BCS dyads had significantly worse concordance (11.1) than the controls (9.1) (p = 0.050). Within the multiple regression models, lower concordance was significantly associated with increased social constraint (p = 0.029), increased depression (p = 0.038), and increased fatigue (p = 0.006). Poor relationship satisfaction and concordance were significantly associated with poor physical and psychosocial outcomes. The maintenance of relationships should remain a focus through difficulties of cancer and into survivorship for survivors, partners, and providers.

Associations between Psychological Resilience and Social Support with Posttraumatic Growth in Breast Cancer Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

This cross-sectional study examined the associations of psychological resilience, perceived social support, and posttraumatic growth (PTG) in breast cancer (BC) patients (N = 203). The participants' mean age was 43.14 ± 9.06, 80.3% were married, 40.9% had a university degree, 61.6% were unemployed, and 72.4% reported a moderate economic status. No significant correlation was found between PTG and psychological resilience, while a moderate and positive correlation was observed between PTG and perceived social support. A weak and positive correlation was also detected between perceived social support and psychological resilience.    Professionals working in the field of psycho-oncology and social work can make attempts to increase psychological resilience, perceived social support, and PTG in BC patients.

General Health and Resilience of Breast Cancer Patients: The Mediator Role of Affective Well-Being

A considerable percentage of breast cancer patients present adequate psychological adjustment and do not become distressed after a breast cancer diagnosis, or, if they do, they manage to recover quickly, which is reflected in their general health. This study aims to determine the role of some psychological mechanisms that affect psycho-oncological adjustment, specifically, resilience and well-being, in a sample of 109 breast cancer patients. For this purpose, participants completed questionnaires on general health, resilience, and well-being (life satisfaction and affect). Correlation analyses and a multiple mediation model were carried out. The results revealed that Pearson correlations between all variables showed strong associations between general health scores and positive and negative affect scores, and moderate associations with life satisfaction and resilience scores. Furthermore; in the mediation model, the total percentage of variance explained by the overall model was 55% (R² = 0.55), where resilience was associated with positive and negative affect, and that influenced general health. These results show that affective well-being is especially relevant in breast cancer patients in terms of its mediating role in resilience, making it clear that an appropriate intervention focused on managing patients' affective status can have a favorable impact on their overall health.
