Smartphone Use and its Impact on Ocular Health among University Students in Saudi Arabia

The relationship between nighttime exercise and problematic smartphone use before sleep and associated health issues: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

Physical exercise has the potential to mitigate addictive behaviors and relevant health issues. However, the nighttime exercise has not been studied regarding this research topic. This study aims to explore the association between nocturnal physical exercise and problematic smartphone use before sleep, as well as related health issues.

METHODS

To explore the association between nighttime physical exercise and problematic smartphone use before sleep as well as related health issues, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 1,334 college students. Their daily exercise behaviors (including timeframe, rationale, frequency, and duration), smartphone use before sleep, sleep quality, smartphone addiction, anxiety, and depression were measured by questionnaires. The associations were assessed using generalized linear models.

RESULTS

Our findings indicate that nearly 70% of participants chose to perform exercise at nighttime. Among these individuals who exercised at nighttime, the frequency and duration of nighttime exercise were significantly associated with decreased probabilities of smartphone use before sleep. Additionally, the frequency and duration of nighttime exercise were associated with lower levels of smartphone addiction and anxiety disorders.

CONCLUSION

Nighttime Exercise behaviors can effectively reduce sleep delays caused by problematic smartphone use before bedtime. These findings contribute to understanding the potential effects of nighttime exercise on problematic smartphone use and relevant health issues. Future research should employ more precise methodologies to examine these associations.

Higher education student perceptions regarding the practice of telemental health services in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

OBJECTIVES

To study higher education student perceptions regarding the practice of telemental health services in Saudi Arabia.

METHODS

The study conducted a cross-sectional descriptive design through an online self-administered survey. The targeted number of responses was set to at least 385 convenience-sample students who were enrolled in different degree programs at the selected university for the Spring 2022 semester. Data collection was done during March 2022.

RESULTS

The sample population was 401 eligible responses. Most respondents Most respondents were from Riyadh (39.15%), females (66.33%), single (64.83%) at the time of data collection. Forty-five percent of participants did not use any telemental health services in the past. Moreover, 34.41% of the participants reported that they preferred to use mixed methods of mental services that combined face-to-face and distanced interactions. Telemental services that can be provided based on students' perceptions were consultations (75.81%), followed by education and promotion (64.33%). Almost half of the participants reported that the internet and culture are among the factors that have shaped their perceptions of telemental health in Saudi Arabia, while the least important factor was their experience with providers.

CONCLUSION

The current study showed that the higher education students perceived telemental health positively and were willing to use telemental health in the future; in addition, the most essential technologies related to telemental health services were videoconferences, audio-visuals, and telephones.

The Relationship between Cellphone Usage on the Physical and Mental Wellbeing of University Students: A Cross-Sectional Study

(1) Background: The study aims to examine the use of cell phones on physical and mental health status and their impact on personality among university students. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a semi-structured questionnaire. The association of physical and mental health variables with the demographic variables was examined using Pearson’s correlation and χ2-test. The binary logistic regression model was further used to predict the probabilities of negative impact on personality due to excessive use of cell phones. (3) Results: A total of 400 participants participated with a mean age of 24.45 ± 3.45 years. The average eye strain was more in High cell phone users HCPU than in LCPU and that difference was significant p = 0.000. The average neck pain was more in (HCPU) than Low cell phone users (LCPU) and there was a significant difference between the two groups with p = 0.006. The average weight gain was more in HCPU than LCPU and that difference was significant p = 0.000. Considering back pain, back pain was found more in HCPU as compared to LCPU with a statistical difference at p = 0.027. Cell phone usage significantly correlated with eye strain (r = 0.577, p = 0.000), neck pain (r = 0.543, p = 0.000), back pain (r = 0.611, p = 0.000), weight gain (r = 0.423, p = 0.000), depression (r = 0.430, p = 0.000), loneliness (r = −0.276, p = 0.002), and mood disorder (r = 0.608, p = 0.000). Eye strain, neck pain, and back pain was observed more in HCPU than in LCPU. HCPU felt they gained more weight when compared to the respondents in the LCPU group. HCPU felt more changes in mood and feeling low when compared to the LCPU, while LCPU group felt more lonelier when compared to the HCPU group. (4) Conclusions: The study highlights a significant association between excess use of cell phones and negative effects on physical and mental health wellbeing. Based on the results, it is recommended that more physical activities and alternative to minimize cell phone usage should be planned for the students. Public health policy makers and stakeholder need to address the ill effects of excessive use of cell phones through novel policies., especially young students, and alternatives to reduce their cell phone activities.
