Abstract
This retrospective study was conducted in 2017 during the dual dengue and chikungunya outbreak in Bangladesh. Febrile participants underwent blood tests for chikungunya, dengue, and ABO groups and rhesus (Rh) factors. Blood grouping information was gathered from healthy donors. Males and those aged between 18 and 49 years had a higher risk of contracting dengue and chikungunya. Blood group O exhibited the highest infection rates at ∼50%, whereas group AB had the lowest at ∼9% among the participants in the study. Yet, when considering the general population's blood group distribution, the combined odds of infection were 2.0, 3.5, and 1.4 times higher in groups B, O, and AB, respectively, than in group A. Infection rates were greater in Rh-negative people. Blood groups B, O, and AB showed higher susceptibility than blood group A according to adjusted odds ratios. Blood groups ABO and Rh factor hold significance in disease susceptibility and vaccine effectiveness. Keeping these implications in mind, further investigations are necessary to understand the mechanisms underlying these connections and their effects on the efficacy of dengue and chikungunya vaccines.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study focused on examining the clinical manifestations, disease severity, and outcomes among cases of dengue fever (DF) confirmed through serological testing. The study specifically targeted individuals admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Islamabad, Pakistan. METHODOLOGY This prospective observational study at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, Pakistan, tracked 1,003 patients from admission to discharge or death between August 2022 and November 2023. Patients were monitored, and admission criteria were established based on the identification of warning signs. The data collection process encompassed gathering demographic information, documenting clinical symptoms, and utilizing a severity classification system for the disease. Outcome measures comprised the duration of critical illness, length of hospital stay, overall outcomes (discharge or mortality), and the assessment of complications. The collected data were analyzed using IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 22.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). RESULTS Baseline characteristics revealed a male predominance (67.8%), with an average age of 35.77 years, and common comorbidities such as hypertension (9.3%) and diabetes mellitus (7.3%). Dengue fever was most prevalent among patients whose blood group was B+ (15.0%). Nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) was positive in 73.4% of the cases. Fever was the predominant complaint in 98.0% of instances. Common bleeding manifestations included epistaxis, gum bleeding, and hematemesis. About 52.20% of cases were observed to have severe thrombocytopenia at admission. Hospital-related aspects demonstrated a mean stay of 3.35 days, a critical phase lasting 1.68 days, and rare complications like expanded dengue syndrome (2.2%). Encouragingly, 98.9% of patients were discharged, 0.4% were shifted, and 0.7% succumbed to the disease. CONCLUSION This study comprehensively analyzes the demographic and clinical aspects of DF, emphasizing a male predominance and the fact that fever was the most common presenting complaint. The duration of hospitalization revealed a brief mean stay, a short critical phase, and low complication rates, with a high discharge rate suggesting positive outcomes.

Abstract
Objective To determine the association of different blood groups in patients with Dengue fever and their relationship with the severity of the illness. Methods A hospital-based descriptive study was conducted in the Dengue Isolation Ward of Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar from March 2020 to September 2020. Patients with Dengue fever were included in the study. The severity of the illness was categorized as "Dengue fever (DF)", "Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF)", and "Dengue shock syndrome (DSS)". The patients' blood groups were determined as A, B, AB, and O groups. All the data were recorded and analyzed using SPSS® version 23. Chi-square (χ2) and student t-test were applied, and a p-value of ≤0.05 was considered significant. Results Out of 160 patients, 119(74.4%) were males; the patient's mean age was 38.09±15.68 SD, IQR=25 years. Greater proportion (28%) of the young men (up to 40 years) was affected compared to 9% young women. Fever (99%) and body aches (96%) were the most common presentation of DF, complicated by bleeding in 30.6% and shock in 9.4% of the patients. The majority (63.1%) of the patients had DF; 27.5% had DHF, and 9.4% had DSS. Sixty three (39.4%) patients had blood Group-B and 5.6% had Group-AB (p=0.97). The proportion of patients with different blood groups and the type/severity of the DF were almost identical except the fact that none of the patient with group AB had DSS. There was significant gender difference of hemoglobin (p=0.008, 95%CI=0.439, 2.844), hematocrit (p=0.012, 95%CI=0.00974, 0.07946); and Alanine Aminotransferase levels (p=0.002, 95%CI=-332.032, -72.233). Conclusion Patients with blood Group-B were more frequent and AB was least commonly affected by the Dengue-virus infections. However, no association was found between a particular blood group and disease severity. Greater proportions of the younger men had Dengue infections.

Abstract
The ABO and Rh blood group phenotypes, alleles, and genotype frequencies have many biological and medical implications. The frequency differs broadly according to races, geographical borders and ethnicity, even within the same region. This study was designed to determine the frequency of ABO and Rh blood groups among blood donors attending the regional blood transfusion centre in Delhi. The gel card method was used to determine the ABO and Rh(D) blood groups of donors who donated blood between January 1, 2020, and June 30, 2022. The assumption of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was used to determine allele and genotype frequencies of blood donors. A total of 16,925 blood units were donated during the study period. Donors phenotype frequencies of ABO were as follows: 'A' (23.88%), 'B' (37.38%), 'AB' (9.97%) and 'O '(29.27%). Rh(D)+Ve (D) were (94.9%) and Rh(D)-Ve (d) were (5.01%), which follow an order of B > O > A > AB and Rh-D > d for Rh. Donors ABO and Rh (D) allele frequencies were IA-0.183, IB-0.277, IO-0.541 and ID-0.776, Id-0.224 respectively. Allele frequencies follow an order of IO > IB > IA and Rh- ID > Id. Donors ABO genotype frequencies were AA-0.0333, AO-0.198, BB-0.0768, BO-0.30, AB-0.101, OO-0.293 and Rh(D) genotype frequencies were DD-0.602, Dd-0.347, dd-0.0501. Genotype frequencies follow an order of BO > OO > AO > AB > BB > AA and DD > Dd > dd. Among our donors, which were mostly from northern India, the ABO and Rh(D) blood groups have the highest proportion of ABO-B and Rh(D)+Ve and the lowest proportion of ABO-AB and Rh(D)-Ve, with a stable order of B > O > A > AB and D > d for phenotype, IO > IB > IA and ID > Id for allele and BO > OO > AO > AB > BB > AA and DD > Dd > dd for genotype.

Abstract
DENV, WNV and JEV status was investigated in healthy blood donors at the Aga Khan University July to December 2018. ELISA for IgM antibodies and RT-PCR for viral RNA detection were performed. IgM antibodies for DENV and WNV were positive in 3.9% and JEV in 0.28% of the blood donors. Blood donors aged 19 and 30 years and residents of urban areas, of Karachi City were most frequent. DENV and WNV seropositivity were significantly associated with residence in Malir District of Karachi.

Abstract
Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. We aimed to evaluate whether ABO and rhesus blood groups associate with the susceptibility or the severity of PUUV infection. We analyzed blood groups in 289 adult patients treated in Tampere University hospital due to PUUV infection during the years 1982–2017. Patients’ blood group distribution was compared to that of healthy, voluntary blood donors living in the Tampere University Hospital responsibility area (n = 21,833). The severity of PUUV infection, as judged by the severity of acute kidney injury (AKI), thrombocytopenia, inflammation, capillary leakage, and the length of hospital care, was analyzed across the groups. The ABO and rhesus blood group distributions did not differ between the patients and blood donors. Patients with non-O blood groups had lower systolic blood pressure compared to patients with blood group O, but there was no difference in other markers of capillary leakage or in the severity of AKI. Minor deviations in the number of platelets and leukocytes were detected between the O and non-O blood groups. To conclude, patients with blood group O may be less susceptible to hypotension, but otherwise blood groups have no major influences on disease susceptibility or severity during acute PUUV infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The mosquito-borne arboviral disease dengue has become a global public health concern. However, very few studies have reported atypical clinical features of dengue among children. Because an understanding of various spectrums of presentation of dengue is necessary for timely diagnosis and management, we aimed to document the typical and atypical clinical features along with predictors of severity among children with dengue during the largest outbreak in Bangladesh in 2019. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study between August 15 and September 30, 2019. in eight tertiary level hospitals in Dhaka city. Children (aged < 15 years) with serologically confirmed dengue were conveniently selected for data collection through a structured questionnaire. Descriptive, inferential statistics, and multivariable logistic regression were used to analyze data. RESULTS Among the 190 children (mean age 8.8 years, and male-female ratio 1.22:1) included in the analysis, respectively 71.1 and 28.9% children had non-severe and severe dengue. All children had fever with an average temperature of 103.3 ± 1.2 F (SD). Gastrointestinal symptoms were the most common associated feature, including mostly vomiting (80.4%), decreased appetite (79.5%), constipation (72.7%), and abdominal pain (64.9%). Mouth sore, a less reported feature besides constipation, was present in 28.3% of children. Atypical clinical features were mostly neurological, with confusion (21.3%) being the predominant symptom. Frequent laboratory abnormalities were thrombocytopenia (87.2%), leucopenia (40.4%), and increased hematocrit (13.4%). Age (AOR 0.86, 95%CI 0.75-0.98, p = 0.023), mouth sore (AOR 2.69, 95%CI 1.06-6.96, p = 0.038) and a decreased platelet count (< 50,000/mm3) with increased hematocrit (> 20%) (AOR 4.94, 95%CI 1.48-17.31, p = 0.01) were significant predictors of severity. CONCLUSIONS Dengue in children was characterized by a high severity, predominance of gastrointestinal symptoms, and atypical neurological presentations. Younger age, mouth sores, and a decreased platelet with increased hematocrit were significant predictors of severity. Our findings would contribute to the clinical management of dengue in children.

Abstract
As a stable genetic marker of human, blood group is expressed in a polymorphic system in the population. Blood group and pathogens mainly produce effects through the interaction between antigens and antibodies. On the one hand, they can promote pathogen colonization, invasion or evasion of host clearance mechanism, and on the other hand, they can make some hosts less susceptible to corresponding pathogens. By exploring the molecular mechanism between the blood group system and pathogenic microorganisms, it can provide a scientific basis for the treatment of human related diseases and the development of vaccines.

Abstract
Dengue disease encompasses various clinical manifestations including dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). In this article, we aimed to systematically review and analyze the association between different blood groups and severity of dengue. We searched nine databases for eligible papers reporting prevalence, distribution, and frequency of blood group type among dengue patients. Network meta-analysis using R software was used to analyze the data. Of a total of 63 reports screened, we included 10 studies with total sample size 1977 patients (1382 DF and 595 DHF). Blood group O was found to have the worst outcome with the highest risk of developing DF (P-score = 0.01) followed by group B (P-score = 0.34), group A (P-score = 0.64), and group AB (P-score = 1), respectively. Blood group O also had the worst outcome with highest risk of developing DHF (P-score = 0.1) followed by group B (P-score = 0.29), group A (P-score = 0.61), and group AB (P-score = 1), respectively. There was a significant increase (P-value <.001) in the overall odds risk of dengue infection among patients with Rhesus-positive blood groups [OR = 540.03; (95% CI = 151.48-1925.18)]. However, there was no significant difference in the odds risk of DF when compared to DHF according to Rhesus status (P-value = .954). This study identified the O blood group as a potential risk factor in predicting clinical severity in dengue patients which may be helpful in evaluating patients for their likely need for critical care.
