Oral mucosal diseases and psychosocial factors: progress in related neurobiological mechanisms

The aetiology of oral mucosal diseases, such as recurrent aphthous ulcer (RAU), oral lichen planus (OLP) and burning mouth syndrome (BMS), involves many factors, and it remains difficult for clinicians to effectively relieve disease symptoms and formulate coping strategies. With the rapid development of psychology, the role of mental and psychological factors in RAU, OLP and BMS has gradually attracted researchers attention, but the specific mechanism has not been completely determined. This narrative review describes the potential neurobiological mechanism of oral mucosal diseases and detailed psychological factors after introducing relevant research into psychological factors and oral mucosal diseases. Future research strategies and innovations needed to understand and treat oral mucosal diseases and psychological factors, as well as how to prevent oral mucosal diseases by regulation of the neuroendocrine system, are also discussed.

Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis – An Overview

Recurrent aphthous ulcers are common painful mucosal conditions affecting the oral cavity. Despite their high prevalence and knowledge of many etiological factors, the exact mechanism of disease is still not fully understood. There are three different clinical forms of recurrent aphthous stomatitis and the therapy differs depending on it.

The aim of this article is to provide an overview of current knowledge about the possible causes and treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. We discuss its pathogenesis which is currently the least explained in the literature. This review offers scientists and clinicians useful information about clinical presentation, diagnosis, predisposing aetiological factors and recent trends in the management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in children in Xiangyun of Yunnan, China: a cross-sectional study

Background

This population-based cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) in children in a rural area in China as epidemiological data on these conditions from such areas are insufficient.

Methods

A total of 3145 children in Xiangyun of Yunnan were enrolled. A socio-economic questionnaire and a field survey of OMLs were administered. We gathered information on factors (sex, age, caregiver, parental education, and last-month household income) that might be associated with OMLs in these children.

Results

OMLs in children in Xiangyun of Yunnan had a prevalence of 1.8% (95% CI; 1.3–2.3%). The most prevalent OML was oral ulcer (n = 11; 18.3%), followed by linea alba (n = 10; 16.7%), whereas the least prevalent OMLs were frenal tag (n = 1; 1.7%) and herpes labialis (n = 1; 1.7%). On unadjusted or adjusted regression, school-aged children had about 50% lower risk of OMLs than preschoolers.

Conclusions

These findings indicate that the prevalence of OMLs in Xiangyun of Yunnan is lower than previously reported. Additionally, the age might be associated with the occurrence of OMLs in children in Xiangyun of Yunnan, China.
