Abstract
Background Hypertension and cardiovascular disease burden are rising rapidly in Nigeria. This trend is partly attributed to a transition from healthy to unhealthy dietary patterns. However, health care professionals lack a dietary screening tool to assess patient dietary intake and offer personalized dietary advice. Objectives We aimed to develop and validate a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) that can quickly and accurately assess regional dietary intake for use by health care professionals in a hospital setting in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Methods We recruited 58 patients from a single hospital in Nigeria. The FFQ was administered at baseline and again after 3 wk. To evaluate the validity of the FFQ, we used 3 repeated and nonconsecutive 24-h dietary recalls (24DR) as a reference method. Spearman rank correlations, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, cross-classification, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), and Bland-Altman analysis were performed in R software version 4.3.1 to assess the relative validity and reproducibility. Results The mean correlation coefficient (r s) between the FFQ and 24DR was 0.60 (P < 0.05), and ranged from 0.20 to 0.78. The Wilcoxon signed-rank tests indicated no significant differences in the 19 food groups queried (P > 0.05), except for fats and oils (P < 0.05). The exact agreement for classifying individuals into quartiles ranged from 17% for salt to 88% for processed meats and alcoholic drinks, with 90% of individuals classified into the same or neighboring quartile. Additionally, the Bland-Altman analysis demonstrated acceptable agreement, with >96% of observations within the acceptable limits of agreement for all food groups. For reproducibility, the ICC ranged from 0.31 for stew to 0.98 for fruit, with an mean ICC of 0.77 between the FFQs delivered 2 wk apart. Conclusions Our results support the use of the FFQ as a valid and reliable tool for ranking intakes of certain food groups among patients in a hospital setting in Nigeria.The trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT05973760.

Abstract
Background Fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) is a well-known gene associated with body weight and obesity risk. Recent studies have suggested that genetic variations in FTO may play a role in the regulation of food preference and consumption. However, little is known with respect to Asian populations. Objective This study examined whether rs1121980 C > T in FTO is associated with food intake in Koreans. Design This study was performed using data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (Ansan/Ansung cohort). Dietary intake was determined using the semi-food frequency questionnaire, and the FTO rs1121980 genotypes of 6,262 individuals (3,049 males and 3,213 females) were analyzed along with sex and body mass index (BMI). Result Genetic variation did not show a significant association with the population's energy-nutrient intake. However, female T allele carriers with BMI ≥ 25 consumed more blue fish and coffee, and their coffee creamer consumption was decisively higher than that of T allele non-carriers (P adjusted = 0.004). In males, the presence of the T allele showed a putative association with the consumption of sweets, snacks, and coffee creamer by the BMI level. Conclusion The FTO rs1121980 variation was associated with a preference for foods particularly high in fat (e.g. coffee creamer, blue fish, sweets, and snacks) in Koreans; these preferences varied by sex and BMI.

Abstract
The use of image-based dietary assessments (IBDAs) has rapidly increased; however, there is no formalized training program to enhance the digital viewing skills of dieticians. An IBDA was integrated into a nutritional practicum course in the School of Nutrition and Health Sciences, Taipei Medical University Taiwan. An online IBDA platform was created as an off-campus remedial teaching tool to reinforce the conceptualization of food portion sizes. Dietetic students’ receptiveness and response to the IBDA, and their performance in food identification and quantification, were compared between the IBDA and real food visual estimations (RFVEs). No differences were found between the IBDA and RFVE in terms of food identification (67% vs. 71%) or quantification (±10% of estimated calories: 23% vs. 24%). A Spearman correlation analysis showed a moderate to high correlation for calorie estimates between the IBDA and RFVE (r ≥ 0.33~0.75, all p < 0.0001). Repeated IBDA training significantly improved students’ image-viewing skills [food identification: first semester: 67%; pretest: 77%; second semester: 84%) and quantification [±10%: first semester: 23%; pretest: 28%; second semester: 32%; and ±20%: first semester: 38%; pretest: 48%; second semester: 59%] and reduced absolute estimated errors from 27% (first semester) to 16% (second semester). Training also greatly improved the identification of omitted foods (e.g., condiments, sugar, cooking oil, and batter coatings) and the accuracy of food portion size estimates. The integration of an IBDA into dietetic courses has the potential to help students develop knowledge and skills related to “e-dietetics”.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Image-assisted or image-based dietary assessments (IBDAs) refer to the use of food images as the primary dietary record and have emerged as key methods for evaluating habitual dietary intake; however, the validity of image-assisted or IBDAs is still unclear, and no meta-analysis has been conducted. Our aim was to investigate the validity of IBDAs in assessing energy intake (EI) and macronutrients compared to biomarker-based (double-labeled water (DLW)) and traditional methods of 24-h dietary recall (24-HDR) and estimated/weighed food records (WFRs). METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines using the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases. Of the 4346 papers identified, 13 studies met the inclusion criteria, comprising 606 participants. RESULTS The overall weighted mean difference (WMD) in EI showed significant under-reporting (WMD = -179.32 kcal, 95% confidence interval (CI): -269.50 to -89.15 kcal; I2 = 89%), with the greatest difference observed between tests and DLW (WMD = -448.04 kcal, 95% CI: -755.52 to -140.56 kcal; I2 = 95%). A small non-significant trend towards under-reporting of carbohydrates (CHOs) was observed (WMD = -9.17 g, 95% CI: -20.58 to 2.24 g; I2 = 64%), but no differences were found in protein (WMD = -0.08 g, 95% CI: -3.94 to 3.79 g; I2 = 68%, p < 0.01) or fat (WMD = -0.57 g, 95% CI: -2.58 to 1.43 g; I2 = 12%, p = 0.35). A meta-regression analysis found potential effects of the body-mass index (tests vs. DLW: β = 34.9, p = 0.063) and duration of the assessment (tests vs. WFR: β = -66.5, p = 0.002) on EI; age (tests vs. 24-HDR: β = -2.222, p = 0.019) and duration of the assessment (tests vs. WFR: β = -9.19, p = 0.013) on CHO intake; duration of the assessment on protein intake (tests vs. WFR: β = -3.2250, p = 0.0175); and duration of the assessment on fat intake (tests vs. WFR: β = -1.07, p = 0.040). CONCLUSIONS Except for DLW, no statistical difference was found between IBDAs and traditional methods. This suggests that like traditional methods, image-based methods have serious measurement errors, and more studies are needed to determine inherent measurement errors in IBDAs.

Abstract
A rapid and reliable tool appropriate to quantifying macronutrient and micronutrient intakes in diets consumed by Malaysian hemodialysis (HD) patients is lacking. We aimed to develop and validate a novel HD-food frequency questionnaire (HD-FFQ) to assess habitual nutritional intakes of HD patients with diverse ethnic backgrounds. This study was conducted in three phases. In Phase I, a HD-FFQ comprising 118 food items was developed using 3-day diet recalls (3DDR) from 388 HD patients. Phase II was the face and content validation using the Scale-Content Validity Index (S-CVI). After successfully developing the FFQ, Phase III tested relative validation against a reference method, the 3DDR. Results from Phase III showed that the mean difference for absolute intakes of nutrients assessed by HD-FFQ and 3DDR were significant (p < 0.05). However, there was a significant correlation between the HD-FFQ and reference method ranging from 0.35–0.47 (p < 0.05). Cross-quartile classification showed that <10% of patients were grossly misclassified. In conclusion, the HD-FFQ has an acceptable relative validity in assessing and ranking the dietary intake of the HD patients in Malaysia.

Abstract
Technology advancements have driven the use of self-administered dietary assessment methods in large-scale dietary surveys. Interviewer-assisted methods generally have a complicated recipe recording procedure enabling the adjustment from a standard recipe. In order to decide if this functionality can be omitted for self-administered dietary assessment, this study aimed to assess the extent of standard recipe modifications in the Dutch National Food Consumption Survey and measure the impact on the food group and nutrient intake distributions of the population when the modifications were disregarded. A two-scenario simulation analysis was conducted. Firstly, the individual recipe scenario omitted the full modifications to the standard recipes made by people who knew their recipes. Secondly, the modified recipe scenario omitted the modifications made by those who partially modified the standard recipe due to their limited knowledge. The weighted percentage differences for the nutrient and food group intake distributions between the scenarios and the original data set were calculated. The highest percentage of energy consumed through mixed dishes was 10 % for females aged 19-79 years. Comparing the combined scenario and the original data set, the average of the absolute percentage difference for the population mean intakes was 1·6 % across all food groups and 0·6 % for nutrients. The soup group (-6·6 %) and DHA (-2·3 %) showed the largest percentage difference. The recipe simplification caused a slight underestimation of the consumed amount of both foods (-0·2 %) and nutrients (-0·4 %). These results are promising for developing self-administered 24-hour recalls or food diary applications without complex recipe function.

Abstract
Diet is a major lifestyle-related risk factor of various chronic diseases. Dietary intake can be assessed by subjective report and objective observation. Subjective assessment is possible using open-ended surveys such as dietary recalls or records, or using closed-ended surveys including food frequency questionnaires. Each method has inherent strengths and limitations. Continued efforts to improve the accuracy of dietary intake assessment and enhance its feasibility in epidemiological studies have been made. This article reviews common dietary assessment methods and their feasibility in epidemiological studies.

Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate the validity of the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), which is being used at the Samsung Medical Center. In total, 305 (190 males and 115 females) participants consented and completed the 3-day diet records and FFQ. Age, gender and energy-adjusted and de-attenuated correlations ranged from 0.317 (polyunsaturated fatty acid) to 0.748 (carbohydrate) with a median value of 0.550. The weighted kappa value ranged from 0.18 (vitamin A) to 0.57 (carbohydrate) with a median value of 0.36. More than 75% of the subjects were classified into the same or adjacent quartiles. The FFQ had reasonably good validity compared with that of another study. Therefore, our FFQ is considered a proper method to assess nutrient intake in healthy Korean adults.

Abstract
The food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) has been used as an important dietary assessment tool in epidemiologic studies, but the usefulness of the FFQ has been debated in recent years. This study was performed to evaluate the relative validities of 3-day food records and the semi-quantitative FFQ. A total of 124 subjects finished 3-day food records (FRs) during each of the four seasons, as well as the FFQ from December 2002 to May 2004. The FFQ was a food based semi-quantitative FFQ including 103 items. Three-day FRs from each season and a randomly selected season were compared with the remaining 9-day FRs. The remaining 9-day FRs, as a reference measurement, were also compared with the FFQ. Pearson's correlation coefficients between the 3-day FRs and the 9-day FRs were between 0.14 and 0.56. Pearson's correlation coefficients between the FFQ and the 9-day FRs ranged between 0.07 and 0.41. Average proportions of classification into the same quartiles, adjacent quartiles, and distant quartiles between the 3-day FRs and the 9-day FRs were 35.8%, 40.5%, and 5.2%, respectively. On average, the proportions of classification into the same quartiles, adjacent quartiles, and distant quartiles between the FFQ and the 9-day FRs were 31.1%, 39.4%, and 6.9%, respectively. Three-day FRs showed higher correlations and higher agreement proportions of quartile classification with the 9-day FRs than did the FFQ, but both relative validities of 3-day FRs and the FFQ appear to be acceptable as dietary assessment tools. Further studies for validating food intake by reliable biomarkers are necessary.
