Occurrence, Frequency, and Correlates of Faking Orgasm and Satisfaction in Sexual Minority Men

Existing literature on "faking" orgasm focuses almost exclusively on women. Limited research exists among men, and none focuses on sexual minority (e.g., gay, bisexual, queer) men. Additionally, faking satisfaction (pretending to be sexually satisfied) remains an unknown concept. This study examined the occurrence, frequency, and correlates of faking orgasm and satisfaction in sexual minority men. Participants (N = 211, age = 18-53, 59% identified as gay) responded to an online survey assessing frequencies of faking orgasm and satisfaction as well as potential correlates of faking (age, relationship status, sexual frequency, orgasm frequency, internalized sexual stigma). Results showed that faking orgasm and faking satisfaction were highly prevalent among sexual minority men in this sample (83% had faked orgasm and 88% had faked satisfaction in the past two years). The frequency of faking was also high; 62% and 68% faked orgasm and satisfaction at least "sometimes." Higher internalized sexual stigma and lower orgasm frequency were associated with higher frequencies of faking orgasm and satisfaction. For faking orgasm, however, the relationship between internalized sexual stigma and faking only existed in gay men. The findings suggest that faking pleasure in sexual minority men is common and deserves more empirical attention.

Evaluating the Perceived Importance of Male Ejaculatory Function

OBJECTIVE

To assess the perceived importance of male ejaculatory function (EjF) from the perspective of adult men and their sexual partners.

METHODS

In a large survey study, men were asked about the importance of their own EjF. Sexual partners of men were asked about the general importance their partner's EjF, and whether they would support a partner's decision to pursue BPH treatment despite ejaculatory dysfunction.

RESULTS

One hundred and two men completed the survey section regarding their own EjF, and 100 participants completed the survey section assessing the importance of their male partner's EjF. While 55% of men agreed or strongly agreed that "ejaculation is an important part of an enjoyable sexual experience," only 30% of partners similarly agreed or strongly agreed (P = .005). A greater percentage of men (12%) agreed or strongly agreed that they "preferred large semen volume" compared to sexual partners of men (3%), however this was not significant. Sixty eight percent of sexual partners would agree or strongly agree to support their male partner's decision to pursue BPH treatment despite potential ejaculatory dysfunction.

CONCLUSION

The perceived importance of EjF differs between men and their sexual partners, as men believe ejaculation to be a more important component of an enjoyable sexual experience than their partners.

Reasons for Accepting and Declining Free HIV Testing and Counseling Among Young African American Women Living in Disadvantaged Southern Urban Communities

Advancing HIV prevention and treatment among at-risk Southern communities of color requires understanding why voluntary HIV testing is accepted or declined. Reasons for testing decisions were investigated among young African American women (n = 223, mean age = 20.4 years) recruited from disadvantaged areas in a Southern US city. A free HIV test was offered following field interviews that assessed HIV risk behaviors and personal and social network characteristics; 69.1% accepted testing, and all were seronegative. After their decision, participants rated reasons for their choice, which were factor analyzed. A four-factor solution showed that test acceptance was related to (1) current sexual relationships and HIV risk concerns, (2) knowledge of HIV medical treatment benefits, (3) awareness of persons living with HIV, and (4) health protection and HIV test convenience. A three-factor solution showed that test refusal was related to (1) negative consequences of a positive test and privacy concerns, (2) low perception of HIV risk, and (3) anticipated social rejection if the test was positive. Comparisons of factor-based average item scores showed that health protection/HIV test convenience was rated as most influential in test acceptance decisions, whereas low perception of HIV risks was rated as most influential in test rejection decisions. The findings suggest that test acceptance can be promoted by offering free, convenient HIV testing as a health check in a testing context that assesses and provides feedback about participants' HIV risk levels.
