Abstract
Although poor health has been reported in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), most studies excluded fathers and focused on mental health. We combined 2016-2019 data from the National Surveys of Children's Health to determine child and parent characteristics that predict poor mental and physical health in fathers (n = 818) and mothers (n = 2111) of children with ASD. For fathers of children with ASD, higher parenting stress was significantly associated with greater odds of poor physical health, whereas racial and ethnic minorities and living at 400% above the federal poverty were significantly associated with lower odds of poor mental health. For mothers of children with ASD, greater child sleep problems were significantly associated with greater odds of poor physical health, and two-parent household living 400% above the poverty line was significantly associated with reported lower odds of poor mental health. Continued efforts to reduce parenting stress and improve child sleep problems, along with expanding existing services and coverages of ASD services, especially for low-income families, may help reduce the burden on these families, preventing adverse future health outcomes in this population.

Abstract
To better understand the impact of children's autism spectrum disorder (ASD) severity on families, we evaluated pathways through which ASD severity affected child sleep quality, caregiver strain, and caregiver sleep quality. In a cross-sectional analysis through the U.S.-wide Simons Foundation Powering Autism Research for Knowledge (SPARK) cohort. Participants were caregivers of dependents with ASD aged 3-17 years (N = 3150). We found that increased severity strongly affects caregiver strain and child sleep quality. Child sleep quality was a minor mediator of increasing caregiver strain. Caregiver sleep quality depended on ASD severity only through child sleep quality and caregiver strain. Interventions aimed at improving child sleep quality or reducing caregiver strain could positively impact families of children with ASD.

Abstract
Mothers of school-aged children ages 3 to 17 years with developmental disabilities (DDs) commonly report sleep problems in their children associated with impaired maternal sleep. However, existing research relies heavily on mothers' self-reported sleep. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of objectively measuring child and mother sleep-wake patterns using actigraphy and videosomnography. This was an observational pilot study. Mothers wore actigraphy watches and video-recorded their child's sleep for 7 nights. Mothers also completed a 7-day sleep diary and questionnaires on sleep quality, depressive symptoms, stress, and child sleep problems. Ten mothers (32-49 years) and ten children with DDs (8-12 years) completed this study. Half of the children were boys with autism spectrum disorders. We successfully recruited 77% of eligible mothers for the study during the pandemic. Eight mothers successfully wore the actigraphy, and nine successfully video-recorded their child's sleep. Mothers rated their participation positively and considered the data collection protocol acceptable. While mothers' sleep patterns from actigraphy were mostly within recommendations, self-reported sleep quality was poor. Child's sleep estimates from videosomnography showed children slept substantially less than recommended sleep hours. Mothers also reported a high frequency of child sleep problems. Consistent with this pattern, mothers also endorsed elevated stress and depression. The use of actigraphy and videosomnography is feasible. Objective sleep measurement for mothers' and children's sleep is needed with self-report to measure multidimensional aspects of sleep and discrepancies between objective and self-report sleep measures. Future studies can use multi-methods sleep measures and work toward interventions that can improve family sleep and reduce mothers' stress and depression.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of behavioral sleep interventions (BSIs) on the number of child night awakenings, and maternal sleep quality and depression. The search followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines (PRISMA) using PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, and EMBASE databases and retrieved studies published until April 2021. We calculated the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for child sleep problems, and the mean differences (MD) and 95% CI for the number of child night awakenings, and maternal sleep quality and depression. Ten studies of 1628 initial searched were included in the final analysis. Two of the 10 studies were divided into two subgroups by participants and intervention type; thus, 12 subgroups were included in the meta-analysis. BSIs significantly reduced child sleep problems (OR 0.51; 95% CI 0.37-0.69) and improved maternal sleep quality (MD - 1.30; 95% CI - 1.82 to - 0.77) in the intervention group. There were no significant differences in the number of child night awakenings and maternal depression between the two groups. More RCTs to examine the effect of BSIs considering children's age, duration of intervention, and outcome measuring time points are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine sleep and behavior problems in children with type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) compared to nondiabetic controls in a bridging country between east and west and to evaluate the interaction of sleep on behavior problems, maternal sleep, and maternal depressive symptoms. METHODS The study included children with T1DM (4-12 years old) and age/sex-matched healthy controls. Parents completed the Children Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), Children Behavior Checklist/4-18 (CBCL/4-18), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and a study-specific sociodemographic questionnaire. Clinical parameters regarding T1DM were collated from medical records. RESULTS Participants included 75 children with T1DM and 49 controls. Based on CSHQ results 65.3% of all participants in both groups had sleep problems. Children with T1DM slept less and had higher daytime sleepiness problems than controls (p=0.024, p=0.008, respectively). No association was found between CSHQ or sleep duration and mode of diabetes treatment (pump, multiple daily injections) or glycemic control. CSHQ correlated with maternal PSQI (r=0.336 p=0.004) and BDI (r=0.341 p=0.004) in children with T1DM, but there was no association amongst controls. Children with T1DM had higher internalizing problems compared to controls. CSHQ and BDI correlated with internalizing, externalizing, and the total scores of the CBCL/4-18 in children with T1DM (R2=0.260 p<0.001; R2=0.207 p<0.001, R2=0.381 p<0.001 respectively). In controls, only BDI was associated with internalizing, externalizing, and the total scores of the CBCL/4-18. CONCLUSIONS Children with T1DM should be evaluated for sleep pattern and quality at follow-up, to identify those at risk for behavior problems and improve maternal life quality. Large longitudinal studies are necessary to assess the effect of new diabetes treatment modalities on sleep.

Abstract
AIMS The current study aimed to validate the relationship between sensory characteristics and sleep dynamics among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using an actigraph, which is an objective assessment device used for sleep monitoring. METHODS A total of 40 children (age range, 3-6 years) participated in this study (n = 20, with ASD and n = 20, age-matched children with typical development [TD]). We examined sleep dynamics using actigraph for 7 consecutive days, and the relationship between sleep parameters and sensory characteristics was analyzed using the Japanese Version of Sensory Profile (SP-J). RESULTS Significant differences were observed in terms of activities per minute during sleep (p = 0.02), sleep efficiency (SE) (p = 0.005), and wake after sleep onset (WASO) (p = 0.02) between the two groups. In the ASD group, significant positive correlations were observed between activities per minute during sleep and low thresholds for Vestibular Sensory stimuli (p = 0.046) and Oral Sensory stimuli (p = 0.006) using the SP-J. Based on a multiple regression analysis, the activities per minute during sleep were associated with low thresholds for Oral Sensory stimuli (β = 0.51, t = 2.29, p = 0.03), but not with other factors, in the ASD group. CONCLUSIONS The current study showed that atypical Vestibular and Oral Sensory modulation may be a risk indicator for high activities during sleep among preschool children with ASD. Thus, whether the interventions for these sensory characteristics are effective in improving sleep quality, daytime activities, behaviors, and cognitive functions in this group of children must be considered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE PAX6 haploinsufficiency ( +/-) can occur due to mutations involving only PAX6 in patients with isolated aniridia or as contiguous gene deletions in patients with Wilms tumor, aniridia, genitourinary anomalies, and range of developmental and intellectual disabilities syndrome. Given the role of PAX6 in pineal development and circadian regulation, adolescents with PAX6+/- may experience sleep-wake disturbances. The purpose of this observational study was to explore sleep-related phenotypes in adolescents with PAX6+/-. METHODS This study compared sleep phenotypes of nine subjects with PAX6+/- (aged 10-19 years) with previously published data on healthy adolescents ( n = 25, aged 10-18 years). Subjects completed the Cleveland Adolescent Sleepiness Questionnaire (CASQ), Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Sleep Disturbance (v. 1.0; 8a), and PROMIS Sleep-Related Impairment (v. 1.0; 8b) Questionnaires and wore actigraphs for seven nights to record sleep patterns. RESULTS Total CASQ, PROMIS sleep-related impairment, and PROMIS sleep disturbance scores were not statistically different between the groups ( ps > .15). Actigraph data for lights off to sleep-onset time were found to be significantly higher in subjects with PAX6+/- versus the healthy comparison group (adjusted mean [95% confidence interval]: 20.1 min [8.1, 49.8] vs. 6.2 min [3.7, 10.4], respectively, p = .04). CONCLUSION Both adolescents with PAX6+/- and the healthy comparison group on average slept less than 8 hr/night, and overall sleep deprivation in adolescents may have masked differences between groups. This study used rare genetic disorders with biological vulnerability to sleep problems as a genotype-phenotype model. Knowledge of sleep-related phenotypes will assist in designing studies to manage sleep-related symptoms in adolescents.

Abstract
The current study examined within-family relations between mothers', fathers', and children's objectively assessed sleep. Participants were 163 children (Mage = 10.45 years; SD = 0.62) and their parents. For 7 nights, families wore actigraphs to assess sleep duration (minutes), quality (efficiency, long wake episode, total wake minutes), and schedule (wake time). A sleep log assessed bedtime. Multilevel models indicated that children's sleep minutes, sleep efficiency, wake minutes, and wake time were associated with fluctuations in their mothers', but not fathers', sleep that same night. The duration and quality of mothers' sleep was associated with both fathers' and children's sleep that night, whereas fathers' sleep was positively associated with only mothers' sleep. Findings highlight the importance of examining sleep within a family context.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Describe daily sleep patterns, sleep quality, and sleep hygiene in 2-5-year-old children newly diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and their parents in comparison with typically developing (TD) children and parents. METHODS Participants (13 JIA, 16 TD parent-child dyads) wore actigraphs for 10 days. Parents completed sleep diaries and sleep hygiene survey. RESULTS Children with JIA had significantly less total sleep time, lower sleep efficiency (SE), and longer naps than TD children. Parents of children with JIA had significantly earlier bedtimes, more wake after sleep onset (WASO) and lower SE than TD parents. Parent-child SE and WASO were interrelated in JIA dyads. Sleep hygiene practices were inconsistent in both groups of children. CONCLUSIONS Inadequate amounts of sleep and poor sleep quality were common in parent-child dyads. Early interventions to improve sleep duration and promote sleep hygiene practices may alleviate future sleep problems and improve parent and child well-being.
