Soybean seed yield, protein, and oil concentration for a modern and old genotype under varying row spacings

Progress in soybean (Glycine max L.) breeding has led to a reduction in optimal seeding rates due to enhanced branching capacity over time. However, less is known about the changes in canopy architecture between old and modern soybean genotypes at varying row spacing and their impact on yield and seed quality through the main stem and branches. Therefore, this study aimed to i) evaluate yield and seed quality responses of an old and modern soybean genotype at different row spacings and ii) examine the yield and seed quality of branches and the main stem. Trials were conducted in Kansas (United States, US) during 2020 and 2021, comparing two genotypes (old, released in 1980, and modern, released in 2013) at four row spacings (0.19, 0.38, 0.76, and 1.52 m) under rainfed conditions. Seed yield and quality (protein and oil concentrations, %) were assessed at the end of each growing season. In 2021, both genotypes had low and similar yields at all row spacings (averaging 2481 kg ha-1) with 2.5 % less protein on branches compared to the main stem. However, 2022 resulted in a high-yielding environment, with the modern yielding 50 % more (3584 kg ha-1) than the old (2315 kg ha-1) genotype in narrow row spacings (<0.38 m). Additionally, the modern genotype showed a three-fold greater contribution to yield from branches (1113 kg ha-1) relative to the old genotype (379 kg ha-1). Despite the high yields observed in narrow rows, the modern genotype maintained protein levels. These results highlight the importance of row spacing as a key management practice for improving yield while maintaining protein levels in high yield conditions.

Baobab-Fruit Shell and Fibrous Filaments Are Sources of Antioxidant Dietary Fibers

Since 2008, baobab-fruit dried pulp is listed as an ingredient on the European Union′s Novel Food Catalogue. By pulp production, 80% of the baobab fruit is discarded, forming side streams, namely, shell, fibrous filaments, and seeds. This study explored pulp and side-stream functional properties, including total dietary fiber (TDF), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), polyphenols, and water- (WHC) and oil-holding capacities (OHC), along with endocannabinoids (ECs) and N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) in pulp, seeds, and seed oil. Shell excelled in TDF (85%), followed by fibrous filaments (79%), and showed the highest soluble and direct TAC (72 ± 0.7 and 525 ± 1.0 µmol eq. Trolox/g, respectively). Pulp was the richest in polyphenols, followed by shell, fibrous filaments, and seeds. Quercetin predominated in shell (438.7 ± 2.5 µg/g); whereas epicatechin predominated in pulp (514 ± 5.7 µg/g), fibrous filaments (197.2 ± 0.1 µg/g), and seeds (120.1 ± 0.6 µg/g); followed by procyanidin B2 that accounted for 26–40% of total polyphenols in all the products. WHC and OHC ranged between 2–7 g H₂O-Oil/g, with fibrous filaments showing the highest values. ECs were not found, whereas NAEs were abundant in seed oil (2408.7 ± 11.1 ng/g). Baobab shell and fibrous filaments are sources of polyphenols and antioxidant dietary fibers, which support their use as functional food ingredients.

Phytochemical evaluation of lipoxygenase-free soybean genotypes for human consumption

Abstract The present study aimed to screen genotypes for the presence/absence of lipoxygenases and to evaluate the phytochemical characteristics of lipoxygenase-free genotypes. Progenies derived from the cross between the cultivars IAC PL-2 (with lipoxygenases) and BRS 213 (lipoxygenase-free) generated 114 inbred lines in the F6/7 generation, evaluated by the qualitative colorimetric method, to verify the presence/absence of lipoxygenase isoenzymes L-1, L-2 and L-3. Eight triple-null (lipoxygenase-free) lines were confirmed by visible spectrophotometry. Progenitors and triple-null lines IAC 10-0003-1, IAC 10-0010-1, IAC 10-0010-2, IAC 10-0012, IAC 10-0043, IAC 10-0046, IAC 10-0107-1 and IAC 10-0115-2 were analyzed to assess their contents of protein, oil, phytic acid, tannins, total phenols and total flavonoids. Analyses showed significant differences in protein (from 38.80% to 41.89%) and oil (from 18.86% to 22.88%), consistent with the values observed in commercial soybean cultivars. The new triple-null lines, compared to the BRS 213 standard, showed lower contents of soluble condensed tannins; lower phytic acid in line IAC 10-0043 and greater amount of total phenols in line IAC 10-0115-2; whereas, the lines IAC 10-0010-1, IAC 10-0010-2, IAC 10-0043, IAC 10-0046 e IAC 10-0107-1 stood out with higher values of total flavonoids. The new lines will be potentially useful parents for genetic breeding and for a multiline strategy, aiming at greater phenotypic stability of lipoxygenase-free soybeans for human consumption.

Adverse effect of rheumatoid arthritis on male Wistar rat's fertility: protective role of Costus extract

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune complaint. Advanced treatments resort to the traditional herbal therapy. The aim of this study is to assess the protective effect of Costus extract on the fertility of male rats with Freund's adjuvant-induced rheumatoid arthritis. Thirty male adult Wistar rats (190-200 g) were divided into six groups. They were subdivided into three groups; group I was the control group that received distilled water, and groups II and III received two various doses of Costus extract (200 and 400 mg/kg, respectively) for 60 days. Another three groups were subjected to RA induction via Freund's adjuvant. Rats were injected a dose of 0.1 ml of Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) in the planter area of the left hind paw and then subdivided into 3 groups. Group I of RA-induced rats were given distilled water. The other two groups were given orally (200 and 400 mg/kg dosage of extract, respectively) from the 2nd day of RA induction for 60 days. Sex organ relative weight, sperm concentration assay, testicular histopathology and immunohistochemistry of androgen receptors, TNF α, and BAX protein were determined. The results showed that RA caused a significant decrease in the relative weight of sex organs and sperm count, which were relatively improved by doses of Costus (200, 400 mg/kg). RA induction caused testicular degeneration which markedly enhanced with Costus treatment as shown in histopathological sections. RA caused a reduction in %IHC of androgen receptors and increased expression level of both TNF α and BAX protein. Using IHC, it was revealed that RA caused a reduction in the expression level of androgen receptors and an increase in the expression of both TNF α and BAX protein. We can conclude that Costus speciosus had a potentially valuable role in improving fertility disorders caused by RA.

Vertical Canopy Profile and the Impact of Branches on Soybean Seed Composition

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seeds are of global importance for human and animal nutrition due to their high protein and oil concentrations, and their complete amino acid (AA) and fatty acid (FA) profiles. However, a detailed description of seed composition at different canopy portions (i.e., main stem and branch nodes) is currently lacking in scientific literature. This study aims to (1) characterize seed yield and composition (protein, oil, AA, and FA) at the main stem (exploring a vertical canopy profile) and stem branches and (2) quantify the impact of canopy yield allocation on seed composition, focusing on branches as a potential contributor for higher yields. Four genotypes were field-grown during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, with seeds manually harvested from all the branches and three main stem segments (lower, middle, and upper). Seed samples were analyzed for seed yield (Mg/ha), seed size (mg/seed), protein and oil content (mg/seed) and their respective concentrations (g/kg), and AA and FA concentrations within protein and oil (g/100 g), herein called abundance. The upper main stem produced greater protein (25%) and oil (15%) content relative to the lower section; however, oil concentration increased from top to bottom while protein concentration followed opposite vertical gradient. Limiting AAs (lysine, cysteine, methionine, threonine, and tryptophan) were more abundant in the lower main stem, while the oleic/(linoleic + linolenic) ratio was greater in the upper segment. Overall, branches produced seeds with inferior nutritional quality than the main stem. However, the contribution of branches to yield (%) was positively related to limiting AA abundance and oil concentration across soybean genotypes. Future research studies should consider the morphological process of stem branching as a critical factor intimately involved with soybean seed composition across environments, genotypes, and management practices.
