Tannic Acid-Capped Gold Nanoparticles as a Novel Nanozyme for Colorimetric Determination of Pb2+ Ions

In this study, tannic acid-modified gold nanoparticles were found to have superior nanozyme activity and catalyze the oxidation reaction of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Enhancing the catalytic activity of the nanozyme by Pb2+ ions caused by selectively binding metal ions by the tannic acid-capped surface of gold nanoparticles makes them an ideal colorimetric probe for Pb2+. The parameters of the reaction, including pH, incubation time, and concentration of components, were optimized to reach maximal sensitivity of Pb2+ detection. The absorption change is directly proportional to the Pb2+ concentration and allows the determination of Pb2+ ions within 10 min. The colorimetric sensor is characterized by a wide linear range from 25 to 500 ng×mL−1 with a low limit of detection of 11.3 ng×mL−1. The highly sensitive and selective Pb2+ detection in tap, drinking, and spring water revealed the feasibility and applicability of the developed colorimetric sensor.

Ion-imprinted nanoparticles for the concurrent estimation of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions over a two channel surface plasmon resonance-based fiber optic platform

We report the design, fabrication, and characterization of an optical fiber sensor based on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique for the simultaneous determination of lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) metal ions in aqueous samples. Two cascade channels over a single optical fiber are fabricated by removing cladding from two well-separated regions of the fiber. SPR working as a transducing mechanism for the sensor is realized by coating thin films of copper and silver over unclad cores of channel I and channel II, respectively. Ion-imprinted nanoparticles for both ions are separately synthesized and coated over the metal-coated unclad cores of the fiber as the recognition layers for sensor fabrication. A first channel having layer of Pb(II) ion-imprinted nanoparticles detects Pb(II) ions and a second channel having layer of Cu(II) ion-imprinted nanoparticles are used for the detection of Cu(II) ions. Both channels are characterized using the wavelength interrogation method. The sensor operates in the range between 0 to 1000  μg/L and 0 to 1000  mg/L for Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions, respectively. These ranges cover water resources and the human body for these ions. The sensitivities of channel I and channel II are found to be 8.19×104  nm/(μg/L) and 4.07×105  nm/(mg/L) near the lowest concentration of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions, respectively. The sensor can detect concentrations of Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions as low as 4.06×10-12  g/L and 8.18×10-10  g/L, respectively, which are the least among the reported values in the literature. Further, the probe is simple, cost effective, highly selective, and applicable for online monitoring and remote sensing.

Utilization of unmodified gold nanoparticles for label-free detection of mercury (II): Insight into rational design of mercury-specific oligonucleotides

Colorimetric detection of mercury (II) with the use of DNA oligonucleotides and unmodified gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as indicators has been extensively studied. This study provides in-depth insights into the rational design of mercury-specific oligonucleotides (MSO) in the biosensing system. The leftover bases of MSO, as a result of the formation of T-Hg²⁺-T base pairs, can adsorb on the AuNPs and hinder their aggregation at concentrations of salt. This phenomenon was directly verified by the changes in particle sizes characterized by dynamic light scattering for the first time. Based on these findings, we proposed a rational design for the MSO with approximately 20-fold improvement in detection sensitivity. The detection limit of the proposed assay decreased to 15nM with a linear working range from 50nM to 300nM for Hg²⁺. The cross-reactivity against eight other metal ions was negligible compared with the response to Hg²⁺. Considering the diverse applications of AuNPs with oligonucleotides, this study can serve as a good reference and provides important implications in sensing and DNA-directed nanoparticle assembly.
