Characterisation of productive performance, body reserve dynamics and energy metabolic parameters of Holstein Friesian and Normande dairy cows managed in a low-input pastoral dairy system

ContextDairy cows with autumn-calving season in low-input pastoral systems are subjected to challenging conditions as their early lactation falls in autumn and winter when shortages in pasture availability and harsh weather conditions often occur.AimsWe aimed to assess the associations between breed (Holstein Friesian (HF) vs Normande (NR)) and stage of lactation on productive and metabolic responses over lactation in a low-input pastoral dairy system.MethodsTwenty-seven HF (n=14) and NR (n=13) cows were studied. Milk yield was measured fortnightly, and milk composition, milk solid yield, liveweight (LW), body condition score (BCS) and blood plasma energy metabolites were assessed monthly.Key resultsThe greater milk for HF versus NR cows (e.g. 17.4 vs 12.1±1.0kg/day of milk; P<0.001) were associated with a lower LW (510 vs 540±10kg; P=0.021) and BCS (1.84 vs 2.37±0.10; P=0.001) at nadir for HF than NR cows. Blood plasma concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were high for longer in HF versus NR cows (18 vs 8 WRC). Plasma glucose was greater (P=0.002) and insulin was lower (P=0.021) for HF versus NR cows at 3 WRC. During mid-lactation, glucose (22 WRC, P=0.021) and insulin (26 to 34 WRC, P≤0.041) were lower for HF vs. NR cows.ConclusionsBecause of their lower milk yields, NR cows had a shorter period of body reserves mobilisation, which was associated with an earlier decrease of plasma concentrations of NEFA and greater insulin concentrations at 3 WRC, and then again during mid-lactation when LW and BCS were also greater for NR cows.ImplicationsIn constraining pastoral environments, NR cows would redirect fewer nutrients for milk synthesis, leading to lower depletion of body reserves, which could be associated with a better ability to cope with winter challenging conditions. Although HF cows had a greater depletion of body reserves, there was no increase in the incidence of health problems for these cows.

Effect of Feeding Adaptation of Italian Simmental Cows before Summer Grazing on Animal Behavior and Milk Characteristics

Simple Summary

The traditional transhumant system of rearing dairy cows in mountain areas expects animals to remain indoors in the valley during the cold season, whereas during the summer they are moved to pastures at progressively higher altitudes. The animals transferred from the valley farm to the alpine pasture must adapt to various management changes. This study aimed to evaluate whether a gradual inclusion of fresh grass in the diet of dairy cows in the valley farm can improve the performance and milk characteristics during summer grazing. Three groups of six animals each were considered: one group was kept in the stable, one was transferred from the valley to the summer farm without adaptation, and the other was progressively adapted to grazing with a feeding adaptation period. Compared to animals kept indoors, grazing animals had similar performance and milk characteristics, higher rumination time and, with respect to volatile compounds in milk, higher concentrations of alcohols, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, and ketones but lower concentrations of organic acids, phenolic compounds, and dimethyl sulfone, regardless of the feeding adaptation. In conclusion, the gradual inclusion of fresh grass in the diet in the valley farm did not improve the performance and milk characteristics during summer grazing.

Abstract

According to the alpine transhumance system, dairy cows are moved from indoor feeding with conserved forage to fresh herbage feeding on pasture. The aim of this study was to assess, as a feeding adaptation technique, the effect of a gradual inclusion of fresh herbage in the diet of Italian Simmental dairy cows before their transfer to alpine pasture on performance, behavior, and milk characteristics. Eighteen cows were assigned to three groups: animals transferred to alpine pasture with a 10-d feeding adaptation period consisting in gradual access to a pasture close to the valley farm (GT), animals transferred to alpine pasture without a feeding adaptation period (AT), and animals kept in the valley farm (IND). During the first two weeks of summer grazing, GT and AT showed higher rumination time and different concentrations of ketones, hydrocarbons, organic acids, toluene, alcohols, phenols, and dimethyl sulfone in milk as compared to IND, whereas no differences were found in milk yield, composition, or coagulation properties. No differences between GT and AT were evident for the studied variables. The feeding adaptation technique used in this study did not influence the performance and milk characteristics of Italian Simmental dairy cows grazing on alpine pasture.

Diet change from a system combining total mixed ration and pasture to confinement system (total mixed ration) on milk production and composition, blood biochemistry and behavior of dairy cows

This study aimed to determine if a diet change from a mixed system to a confinement system affects the milk production and composition, behavior and blood biochemistry of dairy cows. Cows were assigned randomly to one of the two treatments: cows fed with TMR (total-mixed-ration) (confined) throughout the period group fed TMR (GTMR, n = 15) and cows that changed their diet from pasture plus TMR to exclusive TMR at 70 ± 14 DIM (GCHD, n = 15). GTMR cows produced more milk and greater lactose and protein yield before the change of diet than GCHD cows (p ≤ .01), but these differences disappeared after the change. GCHD cows decreased the frequency of rumination and lying from before to after the change (p ≤ .03), but in GTMR cows no changes were observed. After diet change, GCHD cows had lower frequency of rumination and lying than GTMR cows (p ≤ .02). Before the change, GCHD cows had greater NEFA (non esterified fatty acids) concentrations than GTMR cows (p = .002). Abrupt change from a mixed system to a confined system was favorable on blood biochemical and milk variables of dairy cows. However, in relation to behavior, the cows expressed difficulties to adapt quickly to the abrupt change of system.
