The mental health information needs of Chinese university students and their use of online resources: a holistic model

Purpose

This research aims to explore the nature of Chinese students' mental health information needs and to identify the online resources they use to meet those needs.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was collected from three Chinese research-oriented universities using semi-structured interviews and a survey. Twenty-five university students with varied backgrounds were selected for semi-structured interviews to explore the triggers and nature of their needs. Then, printed and online questionnaires were distributed to undergraduate and postgraduate students and 541 valid responses were processed for descriptive statistical analysis and variance analysis.

Findings

The following findings were incurred. First, the triggers of university students' mental health information needs mainly are mental health being in the news, personal interest in gaining mental health knowledge, mental health issues, required formal learning and preparation for mental health counselling. Second, eleven types of information are used, with an emphasis on employment pressure, study stress and self-understanding. Third, mental health information needs differ with mental health status and some social-demographic factors (including gender, urban or rural origin and educational stage). Fourth, information needs can be characterized as dynamic; complex and diverse but concentrated on a few types; ambiguous and hard for participants to define; private; stigmatized; self-dependent and substitutable. Fifth, Internet sources used to meet such needs are mainly search engines, Question and Answer platforms, public social media platforms. Finally, a model of mental health information needs was built based on the above findings to map the whole process from what triggers a need, to the content and characteristics of information need, and online resources used to meet those needs.

Practical implications

The paper provides suggestions for university mental health services in developing more tailored knowledge contents via effective delivery methods to meet diverse needs of student groups.

Originality/value

This research is novel in using empirical data to build a holistic model that captures the context and the nature of mental health information needs of university students.

Measurement invariance and psychometric analysis of Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale across gender and marital status

BACKGROUND

The Kutcher Adolescent Depression Scale (KADS) has been studied across Canada and some other countries during the past almost 15 years. The scale is a self-report tool to diagnose and monitor clinical depression in adolescents. A brief review of previous studies on KADS showed the lack of evaluation of KADS fairness/equivalence in measuring depression among identified groups.

METHODS

To examine the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of the KADS, responses of 407 participants were analyzed using item response theory (IRT) and ordinal logistic regression (OLR). Relevant measures of effect size were utilized to interpret the results.

RESULTS

Findings of the parallel factor analysis confirmed unidimensionality of the KADS and the partial credit IRT model found to be the best fitting model for analyzing the scale. OLR analysis detected three items across gender and one item across marital status to function differentially. An assessment of effect sizes implied negligible differences for practical considerations.

LIMITATIONS

A note of caution is necessary with respect to interpreting results of measurement invariance across Gender. The sample analyzed in this study was predominantly female and this might have affected our findings. A similar analysis with a more balanced sample is recommended.

CONCLUSIONS

This study was a significant step towards providing theoretical and practical information regarding the assessment of depression among adolescents by presenting adequate evidence regarding the psychometric properties of KADS-11. Future studies may look at different methods for assessing invariance and different groups for strengthening conclusions with respect to the KADS.

Chronic Stress and Suicidal Thinking Among Medical Students

Introduction: The subject of chronic stress and ways of dealing with it are very broad. The aim of this study was to analyze stress and anxiety and their influence on suicidal thinking among medical students. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in the years 2014 to 2015 in Poland, at the Medical University—Nicolaus Copernicus University, Collegium Medicum. The objective of this study was to assess chronic stress and suicidal thinking among students and how students cope with this huge problem. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses were conducted to detect differences. Results: Analyses showed that students’ life is full of stressors. Students toward the end of their education cope better with stress than students starting their university studies. Chronic stress has a strong impact on mental health and suicidal thinking among students. Conclusions: The results of the study confirmed that chronic stress and anxiety have a negative influence on mental health and also confirm a relation to suicidal thinking in medical students. Students cope with stress by listening to music, talking to relatives or people close to them, resting or engaging in sports, with cycling, running and swimming being the most common methods used to affect suicidal thinking.
