Bioremediation of bisphenol-A polluted soil by Sphingomonas bisphenolicum AO1 and the microbial community existing in the soil

Pot experimental trial for assessing the role of different composts on decontamination and reclamation of a polluted soil from an illegal dump site in Southern Italy using Brassica juncea and Sorghum bicolor

A pot experiment was carried out to evaluate the remediation potential of Brassica juncea and Sorghum bicolor in the decontamination of soil polluted with heavy metals such as copper, lead, tin, and zinc along with polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy hydrocarbons. Two composts obtained from different composting processes were tested as biostimulating agents. At the end of the trial, the effect of plant/compost combinations on soil microbial composition, contaminant removal, biochemical indicators, and plant biomass production was determined. The results highlighted that compost addition improved plant biomass despite slowing down plants' removal of organic and inorganic contaminants. In addition, compost partially enhanced the soil biochemical indicators and modified the relative abundance of the rhizosphere microorganisms. Sorghum showed better mitigation performance than Brassica due to its higher growth. The soil fertility level, the choice of plant species, and microbial richness were found fundamental to perform soil remediation. In contrast, compost was relevant for a higher crop biomass yield.

Bisphenols-A Threat to the Natural Environment

Negative public sentiment built up around bisphenol A (BPA) follows growing awareness of the frequency of this chemical compound in the environment. The increase in air, water, and soil contamination by BPA has also generated the need to replace it with less toxic analogs, such as Bisphenol F (BPF) and Bisphenol S (BPS). However, due to the structural similarity of BPF and BPS to BPA, questions arise about the safety of their usage. The toxicity of BPA, BPF, and BPS towards humans and animals has been fairly well understood. The biodegradability potential of microorganisms towards each of these bisphenols is also widely recognized. However, the scale of their inhibitory pressure on soil microbiomes and soil enzyme activity has not been estimated. These parameters are extremely important in determining soil health, which in turn also influences plant growth and development. Therefore, in this manuscript, knowledge has been expanded and systematized regarding the differences in toxicity between BPA and its two analogs. In the context of the synthetic characterization of the effects of bisphenol permeation into the environment, the toxic impact of BPA, BPF, and BPS on the microbiological and biochemical parameters of soils was traced. The response of cultivated plants to their influence was also analyzed.

Toward sustainable space exploration: a roadmap for harnessing the power of microorganisms

Finding sustainable approaches to achieve independence from terrestrial resources is of pivotal importance for the future of space exploration. This is relevant not only to establish viable space exploration beyond low Earth-orbit, but also for ethical considerations associated with the generation of space waste and the preservation of extra-terrestrial environments. Here we propose and highlight a series of microbial biotechnologies uniquely suited to establish sustainable processes for in situ resource utilization and loop-closure. Microbial biotechnologies research and development for space sustainability will be translatable to Earth applications, tackling terrestrial environmental issues, thereby supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Mechanisms of BPA Degradation and Toxicity Resistance in Rhodococcus equi

Bisphenol A (BPA) pollution poses an increasingly serious problem. BPA has been detected in a variety of environmental media and human tissues. Microbial degradation is an effective method of environmental BPA remediation. However, BPA is also biotoxic to microorganisms. In this study, Rhodococcus equi DSSKP-R-001 (R-001) was used to degrade BPA, and the effects of BPA on the growth metabolism, gene expression patterns, and toxicity-resistance mechanisms of Rhodococcus equi were analyzed. The results showed that R-001 degraded 51.2% of 5 mg/L BPA and that 40 mg/L BPA was the maximum BPA concentration tolerated by strain R-001. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenase and multicopper oxidases played key roles in BPA degradation. However, BPA was toxic to strain R-001, exhibiting nonlinear inhibitory effects on the growth and metabolism of this bacterium. R-001 bacterial biomass, total protein content, and ATP content exhibited V-shaped trends as BPA concentration increased. The toxic effects of BPA included the downregulation of R-001 genes related to glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, pentose phosphate metabolism, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism. Genes involved in aspects of the BPA-resistance response, such as base excision repair, osmoprotectant transport, iron-complex transport, and some energy metabolisms, were upregulated to mitigate the loss of energy associated with BPA exposure. This study helped to clarify the bacterial mechanisms involved in BPA biodegradation and toxicity resistance, and our results provide a theoretical basis for the application of strain R-001 in BPA pollution treatments.

Bacterial degradation of bisphenol analogues: an overview

Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the most produced synthetic monomers in the world and is widespread in the environment. BPA was replaced by bisphenol analogues (BP) because of its adverse effects on life. Bacteria can degrade BPA and other bisphenol analogues (BP), diminishing their environmental concentrations. This study aimed to summarize the knowledge and contribute to future studies. In this review, we surveyed papers on bacterial degradation of twelve different bisphenol analogues published between 1987 and June 2022. A total of 102 original papers from PubMed and Google Scholar were selected for this review. Most of the studies (94.1%, n = 96) on bacterial degradation of bisphenol analogues focused on BPA, and then on bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS). The number of studies on bacterial degradation of bisphenol analogues increased more than six times from 2000 (n = 2) to 2021 (n = 13). Indigenous microorganisms and the genera Sphingomonas, Sphingobium, and Cupriavidus could degrade several BP. However, few studies focussed on Cupriavidus. The acknowledgement of various aspects of BP bacterial biodegradation is vital for choosing the most suitable microorganisms for the bioremediation of a single BP or a mixture of BP.

Culturomics revealed the bacterial constituents of the microbiota of a 10-year-old laboratory culture of planarian species S. mediterranea

The planarian species Schmidtea mediterranea is a flatworm living in freshwater that is used in the research laboratory as a model to study developmental and regeneration mechanisms, as well as antibacterial mechanisms. However, the cultivable microbial repertoire of the microbes comprising its microbiota remains unknown. Here, we characterized the bacterial constituents of a 10-year-old laboratory culture of planarian species S. mediterranea via culturomics analysis. We isolated 40 cultivable bacterial species, including 1 unidentifiable species. The predominant phylum is Proteobacteria, and the most common genus is Pseudomonas. We discovered that parts of the bacterial flora of the planarian S. mediterranea can be classified as fish pathogens and opportunistic human pathogens.

Metagenomic analysis of microbial communities continuously exposed to Bisphenol A in mangrove rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely distributed in littoral zones and may cause adverse impacts on mangrove ecosystem. Biodegradation and phytoremediation are two primary processes for BPA dissipation in mangrove soils. However, the rhizosphere effects of different mangrove species on BPA elimination are still unresolved. In this study, three typical mangrove seedlings, namely Avicennia marina, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) and Aegiceras corniculatum, were cultivated in soil microcosms for four months and then subjected to 28-day continuous BPA amendment. Un-planted soil microcosms (as control) were also set up. The BPA residual rates and root exudates were monitored, and the metabolic pathways as well as functional microbial communities were also investigated to decipher the rhizosphere effects based on metagenomic analysis. The BPA residual rates in all planted soils were significantly lower than that in un-planted soil on day 7. Both plantation and BPA dosage had significant effects on bacterial abundance. A distinct separation of microbial structure was found between planted and un-planted soil microcosms. Genera Pseudomonas and Lutibacter got enriched with BPA addition and may play important roles in BPA biodegradation. The shifts in bacterial community structure upon BPA addition were different among the microcosms with different mangrove species. Genus Novosphingobium increased in Avicennia marina and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) rhizosphere soils but decreased in Aegiceras corniculatum rhizosphere soil. Based on KEGG annotation and binning analysis, the proposal of BPA degradation pathways and the quantification of relevant functional genes were achieved. The roles of Pseudomonas and Novosphingobium may differ in lower BPA degradation pathways. The quantity variation patterns of functional genes during the 28-day BPA amendment were different among soil microcosms and bacterial genera.

Description of Nocardioides piscis sp. nov., Sphingomonas piscis sp. nov. and Sphingomonas sinipercae sp. nov., isolated from the intestine of fish species Odontobutis interrupta (Korean spotted sleeper) and Siniperca scherzeri (leopard mandarin fish)

A polyphasic taxonomic approach was used to characterize three novel bacterial strains, designated as HDW12AT, HDW-15BT, and HDW15CT, isolated from the intestine of fish species Odontobutis interrupta or Siniperca scherzeri. All isolates were obligate aerobic, non-motile bacteria, and grew optimally at 30°C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA sequences revealed that strain HDW12AT was a member of the genus Nocardioides, and closely related to Nocardioides allogilvus CFH 30205T (98.9% sequence identities). Furthermore, strains HDW15BT and HDW15CT were members of the genus Sphingomonas, and closely related to Sphingomonas lutea JS5T and Sphingomonas sediminicola Dae 20T (97.1% and 97.9% sequence identities), respectively. Strain HDW12AT contained MK-8 (H4), and strains HDW15BT and HDW15CT contained Q-10 as the respiratory quinone. Major polar lipid components of strain HDW12AT were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylinositol, and those of strains HDW15BT and HDW15CT were sphingoglycolipid, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylcholine. The G + C content of strains HDW12AT, HDW15BT, and HDW15CT were 69.7, 63.3, and 65.5%, respectively. The results of phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and genotypic analyses suggest that strain HDW12AT represents a novel species within the genus Nocardioides, and strains HDW15BT and HDW15CT represent two novel species within the genus Sphingomonas. We propose the names Nocardioides piscis for strain HDW12AT (= KACC 21336T = KCTC 49321T = JCM 33670T), Sphingomonas piscis for strain HDW15BT (= KACC 21341T = KCTC 72588T = JCM 33738T), and Sphingomonas sinipercae for strain HDW15CT (= KACC 21342T = KCTC 72589T = JCM 33739T).

Sediments in the mangrove areas contribute to the removal of endocrine disrupting chemicals in coastal sediments of Macau SAR, China, and harbour microbial communities capable of degrading E2, EE2, BPA and BPS

The occurrence of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is a major issue for marine and coastal environments in the proximity of urban areas. The occurrence of EDCs in the Pearl River Delta region is well documented but specific data related to Macao is unavailable. The levels of bisphenol-A (BPA), estrone (E1), 17α-estradiol (αE2), 17β-estradiol (E2), estriol (E3), and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) were measured in sediment samples collected along the coastline of Macao. BPA was found in all 45 collected samples with lower BPA concentrations associated to the presence of mangrove trees. Biodegradation assays were performed to evaluate the capacity of the microbial communities of the surveyed ecosystems to degrade BPA and its analogue BPS. Using sediments collected at a WWTP discharge point as inoculum, at a concentration of 2 mg l^-1 complete removal of BPA was observed within 6 days, whereas for the same concentration BPS removal was of 95% after 10 days, which is particularly interesting since this compound is considered recalcitrant to biodegradation and likely to accumulate in the environment. Supplementation with BPA improved the degradation of bisphenol-S (BPS). Aiming at the isolation of EDCs-degrading bacteria, enrichments were established with sediments supplied with BPA, BPS, E2 and EE2, which led to the isolation of a bacterial strain, identified as Rhodoccoccus sp. ED55, able to degrade the four compounds at different extents. The isolated strain represents a valuable candidate for bioremediation of contaminated soils and waters.

Biodegradation of Bisphenol A by Sphingobium sp. YC-JY1 and the Essential Role of Cytochrome P450 Monooxygenase

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widespread pollutant threatening the ecosystem and human health. An effective BPA degrader YC-JY1 was isolated and identified as Sphingobium sp. The optimal temperature and pH for the degradation of BPA by strain YC-JY1 were 30 °C and 6.5, respectively. The biodegradation pathway was proposed based on the identification of the metabolites. The addition of cytochrome P450 (CYP) inhibitor 1-aminobenzotriazole significantly decreased the degradation of BPA by Sphingobium sp. YC-JY1. Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) cells harboring pET28a-bisdAB achieved the ability to degrade BPA. The bisdB gene knockout strain YC-JY1ΔbisdB was unable to degrade BPA indicating that P450_bisdB was an essential initiator of BPA metabolism in strain YC-JY1. For BPA polluted soil remediation, strain YC-JY1 considerably stimulated biodegradation of BPA associated with the soil microbial community. These results point out that strain YC-JY1 is a promising microbe for BPA removal and possesses great application potential.

Biodegradation and detoxification of bisphenol A by bacteria isolated from desert soils

The endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol A (BPA) has attracted much attention because of its estrogenic activity and widespread environmental contamination. In this study, we investigated the BPA biodegradation abilities of various bacterial strains isolated from deserts and arid soils from southern Tunisia. Ten bacterial strains that belong to Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella sp. and Pantoea sp. showed high BPA removal potential in mineral salt medium (MSM) containing 1 mM BPA. BPA removal rates varied between strains and ranged from 36 to 97%. The strain G320 (P. putida) presented the highest BPA removal rate with 97% within 4 days at 30 °C. The half-life when increasing the BPA concentration to 3 mM was 2 days for strain G320, while total degradation was achieved within 8 days. BPA biodegradation products were identified by GC-MS, and their toxicity was assessed by an algal toxicity test. BPA detoxification was confirmed by evaluating the effect of its biodegradation metabolites on algal growth (dry weight), cells morphology and chlorophylls levels of Tetraselmis sp. strain V2. Results showed the interesting potential of desert soil's bacteria in BPA detoxification as well as the eventual use of the algal specie in toxicity assessment.

Acetate promotes microbial reductive debromination of tetrabromobisphenol A during the startup phase of anaerobic wastewater sludge bioreactors

The detection of increasing concentrations of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in wastewater treatment plants is raising concerns as TBBPA has been identified as a potentially toxic flame retardant. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of acetate biostimulation on TBBPA microbial reductive debromination, and the response of anaerobic sludge associated microbial communities repeatedly exposed to TBBPA. Results indicate that the bulk of the microbial community did not experience significant shifts as a result of TBBPA exposure, and that only a small fraction of the community responded to the presence of TBBPA. Taxa most likely responsible for TBBPA transformation affiliated to Clostridiales and the wastewater sludge group Blvii28. The biostimulating effect of acetate was only observed during reactor startup, when acetogenesis was likely not yet occurring. However, when acetate likely started to be microbially generated in the reactor, acetate addition resulted in a slight but significant inhibiting effect on TBBPA transformation. A significant increase of hydrogenotrophic methanogens in the TBBPA-spiked reactor overtime implies that TBBPA degraders were not in direct competition with methanogens for H₂. These results strongly suggest that TBBPA degrading taxa might have been primarily using acetate as an electron donor for the reductive debromination of TBBPA.

Isolation of Bisphenol A-Tolerating/degrading Shewanella haliotis Strain MH137742 from an Estuarine Environment

The human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) occurs frequently. Once, this compound was one of the highest volume chemicals produced worldwide and used as a plasticizer in many products. However, even at low concentration, it can cause severe damage to the endocrine system because of its endocrine disruptor activity. Thus, mitigation studies to remove or reduce this contaminant from the environment are essential. An alternative method of removing it from the environment is the use of bioremediation processes to the selected bacteria isolated from a BPA-impacted area. In this work, four halotolerant strains were isolated from the Santos Estuary System, one of the most important Brazilian examples of environmental degradation. In the present work, one strain presented strong BPA tolerance and high BPA-degrading activity and could grow in a minimum medium containing BPA as the main carbon source. Strain MH137742 was identified as Shewanella haliotis, based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing and mass spectrometry identification by MALDI-TOF Biotyper. Shewanella haliotis was able to tolerate up to 150 mg L^-1 of BPA and biotransform 75 mg L^-1 in 10 h in a liquid culture medium. Based on the analysis of the produced metabolites by LC-MS, it was possible to predict the metabolic pathway used by this microorganism to degrade the BPA.

Microbial composition of biofilm treating wastewater rich in bisphenol A

Although microbial degradation plays a major role in the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) from water environments, there is little information on the effect of BPA on microorganisms in wastewater treatment systems. The aim of this study was to determine the dynamics of the microbial communities in biofilm growing on porous ceramic supports in a column up-flow reactor during exposure to BPA at increasing concentrations from 0 to 10 mg L^-1. Independent of BPA load, the efficiency of BPA removal was about 90%. Groups of microorganisms that differ in their sensitivity to the presence of BPA in wastewater were identified. The core microbial genera in the biofilm were Acidovorax, Pseudoxanthomonas and Acinetobacter. Arenimonas sp., Thauera sp. and Acidobacterium sp. were the main components of the biofilm in the absence of BPA in wastewater. Increased abundances of Pseudomonas sp., Acidovorax sp. and Luteimonas sp. in BPA-exposed biofilm indicate that these genera may have played important roles in BPA biodegradation. A correlation between Pseudomonas sp. abundance and BPA removal efficiency indicates that BPA was used directly as a source of carbon and energy for growth. This study indicates that the use of the biofilm reactor enables effective BPA removal from wastewater and expands knowledge about the microbial structure of communities responsible for BPA degradation.

Enhanced bioremediation of 4-nonylphenol and cadmium co-contaminated sediment by composting with Phanerochaete chrysosporium inocula

Composting is identified as an effective approach for solid waste disposal. The bioremediation of 4-nonylphenol (4NP) and cadmium (Cd) co-contaminated sediment was investigated by composting with Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium) inocula. P. chrysosporium inocula and proper C/N ratios (25.51) accelerated the composting process accompanied with faster total organic carbon loss, 4NP degradation and Cd passivation. Microbiological analysis demonstrated that elevated activities of lignocellulolytic enzymes and sediment enzymes was conducive to organic chemical transformation. Bacterial community diversity results illustrated that Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were predominant species during the whole composting process. Aerobic cellulolytic bacteria and organic degrading species played significant roles. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) extraction and germination indices results indicated the efficient detoxification of 4NP and Cd co-contaminated sediment after 120 days of composting. Overall, results demonstrated that P. chrysosporium enhanced composting was available for the bioremediation of 4NP and Cd co-contaminated sediment.

Analysis of Microbial Functions in the Rhizosphere Using a Metabolic-Network Based Framework for Metagenomics Interpretation

Advances in metagenomics enable high resolution description of complex bacterial communities in their natural environments. Consequently, conceptual approaches for community level functional analysis are in high need. Here, we introduce a framework for a metagenomics-based analysis of community functions. Environment-specific gene catalogs, derived from metagenomes, are processed into metabolic-network representation. By applying established ecological conventions, network-edges (metabolic functions) are assigned with taxonomic annotations according to the dominance level of specific groups. Once a function-taxonomy link is established, prediction of the impact of dominant taxa on the overall community performances is assessed by simulating removal or addition of edges (taxa associated functions). This approach is demonstrated on metagenomic data describing the microbial communities from the root environment of two crop plants – wheat and cucumber. Predictions for environment-dependent effects revealed differences between treatments (root vs. soil), corresponding to documented observations. Metabolism of specific plant exudates (e.g., organic acids, flavonoids) was linked with distinct taxonomic groups in simulated root, but not soil, environments. These dependencies point to the impact of these metabolite families as determinants of community structure. Simulations of the activity of pairwise combinations of taxonomic groups (order level) predicted the possible production of complementary metabolites. Complementation profiles allow formulating a possible metabolic role for observed co-occurrence patterns. For example, production of tryptophan-associated metabolites through complementary interactions is unique to the tryptophan-deficient cucumber root environment. Our approach enables formulation of testable predictions for species contribution to community activity and exploration of the functional outcome of structural shifts in complex bacterial communities. Understanding community-level metabolism is an essential step toward the manipulation and optimization of microbial function. Here, we introduce an analysis framework addressing three key challenges of such data: producing quantified links between taxonomy and function; contextualizing discrete functions into communal networks; and simulating environmental impact on community performances. New technologies will soon provide a high-coverage description of biotic and a-biotic aspects of complex microbial communities such as these found in gut and soil. This framework was designed to allow the integration of high-throughput metabolomic and metagenomic data toward tackling the intricate associations between community structure, community function, and metabolic inputs.

Composition and pathogenic potential of a microbial bioremediation product used for crude oil degradation

A microbial bioremediation product (MBP) used for large-scale oil degradation was investigated for microbial constituents and possible pathogenicity. Aerobic growth on various media yielded >108 colonies mL-1. Full-length 16S rDNA sequencing and fatty acid profiling from morphologically distinct colonies revealed ≥13 distinct genera. Full-length 16S rDNA library sequencing, by either Sanger or long-read PacBio technology, suggested that up to 21% of the MBP was composed of Arcobacter. Other high abundance microbial constituents (>6%) included the genera Proteus, Enterococcus, Dysgonomonas and several genera in the order Bacteroidales. The MBP was most susceptible to ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, gentamicin, and meropenam. MBP exposure of human HT29 and A549 cells caused significant cytotoxicity, and bacterial growth and adherence. An acellular MBP filtrate was also cytotoxic to HT29, but not A549. Both MBP and filtrate exposures elevated the neutrophil chemoattractant IL-8. In endotracheal murine exposures, bacterial pulmonary clearance was complete after one-week. Elevation of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, and chemokines KC and MCP-1 occurred between 2h and 48h post-exposure, followed by restoration to baseline levels at 96h. Cytokine/chemokine signalling was accompanied by elevated blood neutrophils and monocytes at 4h and 48h, respectively. Peripheral acute phase response markers were maximal at 24h. All indicators examined returned to baseline values by 168h. In contrast to HT29, but similar to A549 observations, MBP filtrate did not induce significant murine effects with the indicators examined. The results demonstrated the potentially complex nature of MBPs and transient immunological effects during exposure. Products containing microbes should be scrutinized for pathogenic components and subjected to characterisation and quality validation prior to commercial release.

The identification of carbamazepine biodegrading phylotypes and phylotypes sensitive to carbamazepine exposure in two soil microbial communities

Carbamazepine (CBZ), an antiepileptic drug, has been introduced into agricultural soils via irrigation with treated wastewater and biosolids application. Such contamination is problematic because CBZ is persistent and the risks to ecosystems or human health are unknown. The current study examined CBZ biodegradation in two agricultural soils (soil 1 and 2) and the effects on the soil microbial communities during CBZ exposure. The experimental design involved three CBZ concentrations (50, 500, 5000ng/g), under aerobic as well as anaerobic conditions. CBZ concentrations were determined using solid phase extraction and LC MS/MS. The effect of CBZ on the soil microbial community was investigated using high throughput sequencing and a computational approach to predict functional composition of the metagenomes (phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states, PICRUSt). The most significant CBZ biodegradation occurred in soil 1 under aerobic conditions. In contrast, CBZ biodegradation was limited under anaerobic conditions in soil 1 and under both conditions in soil 2. For soil 1, several phylotypes were enriched following CBZ degradation compared to the controls, including unclassified Sphingomonadaceae, Xanthomonadaceae and Rhodobacteraceae, as well as Sphingomonas, Aquicella and Microvirga. These phylotypes are considered putative CBZ degraders as they appear to be benefiting from CBZ biodegradation. PICRUSt revealed that soil 1 contained a greater abundance of xenobiotic degrading genes compared to soil 2, and thus, this analysis method offers a potential valuable approach for predicting CBZ attenuation in soils. PICRUSt analysis also implicated Sphingomonadaceae and Xanthomonadaceae in drug metabolism. Interestingly, numerous phylotypes decreased in abundance following CBZ exposure and these varied with soil type, concentration, duration of exposure, and the availability of oxygen. For three phylotypes (Flavobacterium, 3 genus incertae sedis and unclassified Bacteroidetes), the relative abundance was reduced in both soils, indicating a notable sensitivity to CBZ for these microorganisms.

Inverse modeling of the biodegradation of emerging organic contaminants in the soil-plant system

Understanding the processes involved in the uptake and accumulation of organic contaminants into plants is very important to assess the possible human risk associated with. Biodegradation of emerging contaminants in plants has been observed, but kinetical studies are rare. In this study, we analyse experimental data on the uptake of emerging organic contaminants into lettuce derived in a greenhouse experiment. Measured soil, root and leaf concentrations from four contaminants were selected within the applicability domain of a steady-state two-compartment standard plant uptake model: bisphenol A (BPA), carbamazepine (CBZ), triclosan (TCS) and caffeine (CAF). The model overestimated concentrations in most cases, when no degradation rates in plants were entered. Subsequently, biodegradation rates were fitted so that the measured concentrations were met. Obtained degradation kinetics are in the order, BPA < CAF ≈ TCS < CBZ in roots, and BPA ≈ TCS < CBZ << CAF in leaves. Kinetics determined by inverse modeling are, despite the inherent uncertainty, indicative of the dissipation rates. The advantage of the procedure that is additional knowledge can be gained from existing experimental data. Dissipation kinetics found via inverse modeling is not a conclusive proof for biodegradation and confirmation by experimental studies is needed.
