Relationships of alcohol use, stress, avoidance coping, and other factors with mental health in a highly educated workforce

Residential green space structures are associated with a lower risk of bipolar disorder: A nationwide population-based study in Taiwan

Although many researchers have identified the potential psychological benefits offered by greenness, the association between green space structures and mental disorders is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to identify associations between green space structures and the incidence of bipolar disorder. To this end, we investigated 1,907,776 individuals collected from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. After a follow-up investigation from 2005 to 2016, among those with no history of bipolar disorder, 20,548 individuals were further found to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder. A geographic information system and landscape index were used to quantify three indices of green space structures: mean patch area (area and edge), mean fractal dimension index (shape), and mean proximity index (proximity). Additionally, greenness indices, the normalized difference vegetation index, and the enhanced vegetation index were used to confirm the association between greenness and incidence of bipolar disorder. These five indices were used to represent the individual's exposure according to the township of the hospital that they most frequently visited with symptoms of the common cold. Spearman's correlation analysis was performed to select variables by considering their collinearity. Subsequently, the frailty model for each index was used to examine the specific associations between those respective indices and the incidence of bipolar disorder by adjusting for related risk factors, such as socioeconomic status, metabolic syndrome, and air pollution. A negative association was identified between the mean patch area and the mean proximity index, and the incidence of bipolar disorder. In contrast, a positive association was found between the mean fractal dimension index and the incidence of bipolar disorder. We observed similar results in sensitivity testing and subgroup analysis. Exposure to green spaces with a larger area, greater proximity, lower complexity, and greener area may reduce the risk of bipolar disorder.

Socioeconomic Status and Adult Gliomas Mortality Risk: An Observational Study Based on SEER Data

BACKGROUND

Socioeconomic status (SES) is presented as a complex structure and has not been studied adequately among adult patients with glioma. This study aims to identify the intrinsic linkages of community-level SES multivariables and discover the effects of the various patterns of these indicators on prognosis of adult gliomas.

METHODS

Based on data from the SEER (Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results) database, 44,816 adults diagnosed with gliomas from 2007 to 2016 were enrolled for the research. We first used factor analysis and cluster analysis to process SES data. Then, univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to analyze the risk indicators.

RESULTS

Four integrated SES factors were identified: factor 1, economic and social disadvantage (economic and education disadvantage); factor 2, immigration-associated characteristics (foreign-born, language isolation, less household room, recent interstate residential stability); factor 3, housing instability; and factor 4, absence of intrastate mobility. Factor 1 was a risk indicator for survival, whereas factor 2 and factor 4 were protective indicators. All patients fell into 7 cluster groups. Compared with cluster 1, clusters 2, 3, 4, and 7 had a better prognosis, whereas cluster 6 had a shorter survival.

CONCLUSIONS

The combinatorial patterns of SES indicators and pattern-based groups do influence the outcomes of adult gliomas. Special attention is given to patients living in areas with specialized economic-educational disadvantages, relocation instability, and immigration-related characteristics.

Associations of antidepressant use with alcohol use and problem drinking: Ontario population data from 1999 to 2017

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the rates of and change in past-year antidepressant use from 1999 to 2017 among a representative sample of Ontario adults and past-year alcohol users and problem drinkers. It examined whether alcohol use and problem drinking are associated with antidepressant use over time, whether gender moderated the effect of problem drinking on antidepressant use, and the potential correlates of past-year antidepressant use.

METHOD

This study utilized data from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Monitor study, a repeat cross-sectional telephone survey of the Ontario general adult population. Data are from 15 annual cycles of the survey 1999-2017 (where relevant variables were included), resulting in a sample size of N = 35,210. Variables of interest included demographic variables, past-year antidepressant use, past-year alcohol use, and past-year problem drinking (e.g., 8+ on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test).

RESULTS

Past-year antidepressant use increased from 1999 to 2017 similarly among the full sample, past-year alcohol users, and past-year problem drinkers. Approximately 9% of Ontarians reported past-year antidepressant use in 2017. Overall, past-year problem drinkers were 1.5 times more likely to use antidepressants than non-problem drinkers. Past-year alcohol use was not associated with antidepressant use. Gender moderated the association between past-year problem drinking and antidepressant use.

CONCLUSION

This study determined that past-year antidepressant use increased from 1999 to 2017, that past-year problem drinkers are more likely to use antidepressants than non-problem drinkers, and that past-year problem drinking is associated with past-year antidepressant use among women but not among men.

Sociodemographic factors associated with consumption of confectionery among obese and non-obese adults: A secondary analysis

The objective of the present study is to examine sociodemographic factors associated with consumption of confectionery among obese and non-obese adults in Malaysia. Secondary analysis of the Malaysian Adult Nutrition Survey (MANS) 2014 was performed. The survey was conducted in urban and rural areas in the 14 states of Malaysia, including the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. Adults aged 18 years and above (n = 2696) were interviewed. The dependent variable was the total servings of confectionery consumed per week. An ordered logistic regression model was used to examine the associated sociodemographic factors in the decision of people to consume 0, 1-2, 3-5 and ≥6 servings of confectionery. Marginal effects of sociodemographic variables on confectionery consumption were calculated. Analyses stratified by bodyweight group were conducted. The results showed that income, education, gender, ethnicity, and employment status were significantly associated with consumption of confectionery. In particular, income, education, gender, ethnicity and employment status affected confectionery consumption, but not the other way around. However, no relationship was evidenced between age, marital status, household location and confectionery consumption. In conclusion, sociodemographic factors were related to consumption of confectionery. Policies aimed at discouraging consumption of confectionery should focus primarily on high income earners, well-educated individuals and Bumiputera.

Employment Status and Mental Health: Mediating Roles of Social Support and Coping Strategies

Although it has been established that unemployment and underemployment increase distress and depression, the psychological mechanisms involved are not very clear. This study examines the roles of social support and coping strategies as mediators of the association between employment status and mental health, as well as gender and age differences as moderators. Residents from the epidemiological catchment area of south-west Montreal responded to a randomized household survey for adults in 2009. A follow-up was conducted based on participants' employment status 2 and 4 years later. ANOVAs tests were computed with SPSS to evaluate group differences, and structural equation modeling was performed with AMOS to test mediation effects. At baseline, among participants between 18 and 64 years old (n = 2325), 14.3 % were unemployed/not studying, 14.4 % worked part-time, and 56.5 % worked full-time. Employment status was found to significantly affect depression among those under 45 years old (chi-square = 23.4, p < 0.001). Results showed a negative association of full-time employment with depression, which was fully mediated by social support, less coping with drugs/medication, and less distress. A negative association with full-time employment was also noted with distress, which was partially mediated by increased social support, coping with alcohol, and less coping with drugs/medication. The total indirect effect suggests that full-time employees generally have more resources and do not tend to use avoidance strategies like coping with drugs/medication, resulting in less distress (β = -0.05; p < 0.01) and depression (β = -0.028; p < 0.01). Results suggest that optimal impact on mental health could be attained when increasing employment, namely full-time employment, in communities.

Depression, distress and self-efficacy: The impact on diabetes self-care practices

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing in Malaysia, and people with diabetes have been reported to suffer from depression and diabetes distress which influences their self-efficacy in performing diabetes self-care practices. This interviewer administered, cross sectional study, conducted in the district of Hulu Selangor, Malaysia, involving 371 randomly selected patients with type 2 diabetes, recruited from 6 health clinics, aimed to examine a conceptual model regarding the association between depression, diabetes distress and self-efficacy with diabetes self-care practices using the partial least square approach of structural equation modeling. In this study, diabetes self-care practices were similar regardless of sex, age group, ethnicity, education level, diabetes complications or type of diabetes medication. This study found that self-efficacy had a direct effect on diabetes self-care practice (path coefficient = 0.438, p<0.001). Self-care was not directly affected by depression and diabetes distress, but indirectly by depression (path coefficient = -0.115, p<0.01) and diabetes distress (path coefficient = -0.122, p<0.001) via self-efficacy. In conclusion, to improve self-care practices, effort must be focused on enhancing self-efficacy levels, while not forgetting to deal with depression and diabetes distress, especially among those with poorer levels of self-efficacy.

Longitudinal Relationships Among Overweight, Life Satisfaction, and Aspirations in Young Women

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated associations of overweight status and changes in overweight status over time with life satisfaction and future aspirations among a community sample of young women.

RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES

A total of 7865 young women, initially 18 to 23 years of age, completed two surveys that were 4 years apart. These women provided data on their future life aspirations in the areas of further education, work/career, marital status, and children, as well as their satisfaction with achievements to date in a number of life domains. Women reported their height and weight and their sociodemographic characteristics, including current socioeconomic status (occupation).

RESULTS

Young women's aspirations were cross-sectionally related to BMI category, such that obese women were less likely to aspire to further education, although this relationship seemed explained largely by current occupation. Even after adjusting for current occupation, young women who were obese were more dissatisfied with work/career/study, family relationships, partner relationships, and social activities. Weight status was also longitudinally associated with aspirations and life satisfaction. Women who were overweight or obese at both surveys were more likely than other women to aspire to "other" types of employment (including self-employed and unpaid work in the home) as opposed to full-time employment. They were also less likely to be satisfied with study or partner relationships. Women who resolved their overweight/obesity status were more likely to aspire to being childless than other women.

DISCUSSION

These results suggest that being overweight/obese may have a lasting effect on young women's life satisfaction and their future life aspirations.

Development and validation of a risk model for prediction of hazardous alcohol consumption in general practice attendees: the predictAL study

Background

Little is known about the risk of progression to hazardous alcohol use in people currently drinking at safe limits. We aimed to develop a prediction model (predictAL) for the development of hazardous drinking in safe drinkers.

Methods

A prospective cohort study of adult general practice attendees in six European countries and Chile followed up over 6 months. We recruited 10,045 attendees between April 2003 to February 2005. 6193 European and 2462 Chilean attendees recorded AUDIT scores below 8 in men and 5 in women at recruitment and were used in modelling risk. 38 risk factors were measured to construct a risk model for the development of hazardous drinking using stepwise logistic regression. The model was corrected for over fitting and tested in an external population. The main outcome was hazardous drinking defined by an AUDIT score ≥8 in men and ≥5 in women.

Results

69.0% of attendees were recruited, of whom 89.5% participated again after six months. The risk factors in the final predictAL model were sex, age, country, baseline AUDIT score, panic syndrome and lifetime alcohol problem. The predictAL model's average c-index across all six European countries was 0.839 (95% CI 0.805, 0.873). The Hedge's g effect size for the difference in log odds of predicted probability between safe drinkers in Europe who subsequently developed hazardous alcohol use and those who did not was 1.38 (95% CI 1.25, 1.51). External validation of the algorithm in Chilean safe drinkers resulted in a c-index of 0.781 (95% CI 0.717, 0.846) and Hedge's g of 0.68 (95% CI 0.57, 0.78).

Conclusions

The predictAL risk model for development of hazardous consumption in safe drinkers compares favourably with risk algorithms for disorders in other medical settings and can be a useful first step in prevention of alcohol misuse.

Do differing types of victimization and coping strategies influence the type of social reactions experienced by current victims of intimate partner violence?

This study examines whether differing types of victimization and coping strategies influence the type of social reactions experienced by 173 current victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Results of path analyses showed that psychological and sexual IPV victimization were related to positive social reactions, whereas physical, psychological, and sexual IPV victimization were related to negative social reactions. Indirect relationships between victimization and social reactions differed by types of coping strategies (social support, problem solving, and avoidance) examined. Implications are discussed regarding the development of interventions with women's support networks and the augmentation of services to help victims modify their coping strategies.
