Abstract
This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) and blueberry pectin (BP) complexes on mice with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis before and after high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blotting, and 16S rDNA sequencing were used to study the expression of inflammation-related factors, activation of signal pathway-related proteins, and changes in the intestinal flora in ulcerative colitis (UC) mice. The results showed that HHP-treated C3G-BP complexes significantly relieved diarrhea and blood loss in the stool of UC mice and alleviated colon shortening. The potential mechanism of action involved reduction in intestinal oxidative stress mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory factors, improvement in anti-inflammatory factor levels, inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway, increased protein levels of Bcl-2/Bax and caspase-3/cleaved caspase-3 genes, and improved gut microbiota composition. Compared with other experimental groups, the HHP-treated C3G-BP complexes group exhibited the best anti-inflammatory effect on DSS-induced UC mice. The results may provide new ideas for using C3G-BP complexes for treating UC and help develop better processing methods.

Abstract
Restoring intestinal microbiota dysbiosis with fecal microbiota transplantation is considered as a promising treatment for ulcerative colitis. However, the mechanisms underlying its relieving effects remain unclear. Ulcerative colitis pathogenesis is associated with the involvement of immune cells and inflammatory cytokines. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of fecal microbiota transplantation on T cell cytokines in a dextran sulfate sodium-induced ulcerative colitis mouse model. Five-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) was used as the positive control. Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to control, model (UC), UC + FMT, and UC + 5-ASA groups. Each group consisted of five mice. The establishment of the mouse model was verified by fecal occult-blood screening and hematoxylin-eosin staining. Results showed that fecal microbiota transplantation reduced colonic inflammation, significantly decreased T helper (Th)1 and Th17 cells, interferon-gamma, interleukin-2 and interleukin-17, as well as significantly increased Th2 and regulatory T (Treg) cells, interleukin-4, interleukin-10, and transforming growth factor-beta, and improved routine blood count. Furthermore, 16S rRNA gene-sequencing analysis showed a significant increase in the relative abundance of genus Akkermansia and a significant decrease in the relative abundance of genus Helicobacter in the ulcerative colitis group. Fecal microbiota transplantation restored the profile of the intestinal microbiota to that of the control group. These findings demonstrated the capability of fecal microbiota transplantation in controlling experimentally induced ulcerative colitis by improving Th1/Th2 and Th17/Treg imbalance through the regulation of intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), are chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract caused by interactions between genetic, environmental, immunological, and microbial factors. While the incidence and prevalence of IBD in Asian populations were relatively lower than those in Western countries, they appear to be gradually increasing. A Westernized diet, high socioeconomic status, improvement of hygiene, and development of vaccination could affect the increases in IBD incidence and prevalence in Asian countries. This review describes the latest trends in the incidence and prevalence of IBD in Asia. Studying the epidemiology of IBD in Asia may unravel the etiopathogenesis of and risk factors for IBD.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC), a subtype of inflammatory bowel disease, is characterized by repetitive remission and relapse. Gut microbiome is critically involved in pathogenesis of UC. The shifts in microbiome profile during disease remission remain under-investigated. Recent studies revealed that UC pathogenesis is likely to originate in the mucosal barrier. Therefore, we investigated the effectiveness of mucosal tissue microbiomes to differentiate patients with subclinical UC from healthy individuals. The microbiomes of cecal and rectal biopsies and feces were characterized from 13 healthy individuals and 45 patients with subclinical UC. Total genomic DNA was extracted from the samples, and their microbial communities determined using next-generation sequencing. We found that changes in relative abundance of subclinical UC were marked by a decrease in Proteobacteria and an increase in Bacteroidetes phyla in microbiome derived from rectal tissues but not cecal tissue nor feces. Only in the microbiome of rectal tissue had significantly higher community richness and evenness in subclinical UC patients than controls. Twenty-seven operational taxonomic units were enriched in subclinical UC cohort with majority of the taxa from the Firmicutes phylum. Inference of putative microbial functional pathways from rectal biopsy microbiome suggested a differential increase in interleukin-17 signaling and T-helper cell differentiation pathways. Rectal biopsy tissue was suggested to be more suitable than fecal samples for microbiome assays to distinguish patients with subclinical UC from healthy adults. Assessment of the rectal biopsy microbiome may offer clinical insight into UC disease progression and predict relapse of the diseases.

Abstract
According to the modern medical research on ulcerative colitis (UC), many factors, including environmental and psychological factors as well as hereditary susceptibility, participate in the pathogenesis of UC, which is a complex process involving chronic inflammation. Intestinal mucosal barrier damage and disorder of neuroendocrine immune network, such as dysfunction of biological barrier, immune barrier, and brain-gut peptide, play a critical role in this process. Meanwhile, we suggest that the microbiome-gut-brain axis is the key to elucidating the pathogenesis of UC.
