Abstract
The transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is an innovative technique in thyroid surgery. This review compiles current research on TOETVA, covering its development, anatomical challenges, techniques, selection of suitable patients, results, complications, and future advancements. We performed a comprehensive literature review on PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases for articles published up to 15th March 2024. The search strategy included a combination of terms focused on "vestibular approach" and "thyroidectomy". The review underscores the necessity for preoperative planning and careful patient selection to reduce risks and enhance outcomes. It discusses the unique anatomical challenges of TOETVA, such as avoiding mental nerve damage and the complexities involved in creating a subplatysmal space. Outcomes of TOETVA, including surgical duration, complication rates, and recovery times, are compared favorably to traditional methods. The approach is particularly noted for high patient satisfaction and superior cosmetic results. Complications specific to TOETVA, like infection, bleeding, and potential harm to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, are recognized. Future research directions are discussed as well. In summary, TOETVA is a promising alternative for thyroidectomy with excellent cosmetic outcomes and patient satisfaction. Success relies on selective patient criteria, surgical expertise, and continuous research to refine the approach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE(S) Endoscopic thyroidectomy, such as axillary, areola and transoral approaches, offer the advantage of a good cosmetic outcome, but it requires a wider dissection field compared to open thyroidectomy. Recently, chest-collarbone approach thyroidectomy has been widely developed in China because of its shorter anatomical route compared to other endoscopic approaches. This study retrospectively evaluated endoscopic thyroidectomy via chest-collarbone approach in patients with thyroid nodules to determine its feasibility. METHODS A total of 46 patients with thyroid disease who underwent endoscopic thyroidectomy between January 2022 and December 2022 were enrolled in the study and randomly matched to patients with thyroid disease who underwent open thyroidectomy at the same time based on nodule size and pathology. Postoperative bleeding, hoarseness situation, hospital stay, postoperative drainage volume, laryngeal nerve palsy, hypoparathyroidism and wound infection were assessed in both groups. RESULTS Forty-four patients underwent endoscopic thyroidectomy successfully and two patients changed to open thyroidectomy. The amount of postoperative drainage for the endoscopic thyroidectomy group was 102.78 ± 28.04 mL, and which was 71.91 ± 19.20 for open thyroidectomy group (p < 0.001). The postoperative hospital stay for the endoscopic thyroidectomy group was 8.78 ± 2.57 days, and which was 7.22 ± 1.13 for open thyroidectomy group (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in postoperative bleeding, hoarseness situation, and wound infection between the two groups. Laryngeal nerve palsy, supraclavicular nerve injury and hypoparathyroidism were not observed in any patient during this study. CONCLUSION Chest-collarbone endoscopic thyroid surgery is acceptable. This treatment improves in a good cosmetic outcome in patients with thyroid disease. To assess patients with preoperative nodule size and nature of the case is the impact of the success rate, which is particularly important.

Abstract
Introduction The application of transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is becoming widespread throughout the world. We primarily aimed to evaluate the severity of surgical trauma in TOETVA and conventional open thyroidectomy (COT) regarding the inflammatory response including the comparison of surgical stress markers [interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cell (WBC)]. Material and method This non-randomized prospective study enrolled two groups with 20 patients each: COT group and TOETVA group. Patients aged 18-65 years with benign thyroid disease; with fine needle aspiration biopsy results of Bethesda III, IV or Bethesda V, VI (<1 cm nodule); thyroid volume <50 cm3; nodule diameter <4 cm; female gender without a previous neck, chin, and/or oral surgery; without vocal cord paralysis preoperatively; and patients in euthyroid state were enrolled to the study. Preoperative, postoperative second hour, first day, and second day CRP, WBC, and IL-6 levels were evaluated. Pain intensity was evaluated with the visual analog scale (VAS) score on the 2nd and 12th hour, 1st and 2nd days postoperatively. Results All the patients were female and mean age was significantly higher in the COT group. The operative time was significantly longer in the TOETVA group. No significant difference was found between the two groups regarding IL-6 levels. In the TOETVA group, postoperative second hour WBC value (p = 0.044) and first (p = 0.002) and second day (p = 0.005) CRP values were significantly higher. In the TOETVA group, the lower lip and lower chin VAS scores were significantly higher at 2nd and 12th hour, on the first and second days. The anterior neck VAS score was significantly higher in the TOETVA group at the second hour (p = 0.025). General and cosmetic satisfactions were similar at the 15th and 30th days in both groups. Conclusion The longer operative time and higher postoperative CRP level and VAS score in the chin and lower lip in the TOETVA group suggested that the method is not a minimally invasive technique compared to COT. However, the presence of similar total complication rates and early postoperative general and esthetic satisfaction that improves over time in both groups suggests that the clinical effect of increased magnitude of systemic inflammatory response in TOETVA might be temporary and acceptable.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Owing to the lack of visible scars, the transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) offers superior aesthetic outcomes compared to conventional thyroidectomy. Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) represents a rare thyroid gland neoplasm. This study aimed to explore the TOETVA learning curve and present a case report of CASTLE. METHODS A study with precise 1:1 matching was conducted to assess the procedure safety and cancer control outcomes of TOETVA in comparison to conventional surgery between May 2020 and May 2023. Cumulative sum analysis was employed to optimally fit the learning curve. Subsequently, a case report of CASTLE treated with TOETVA surgery was presented. RESULTS The mean operative time was longer in the TOETVA group than in the open group. The TOETVA group had a higher incidence of skin numbness and excellent cosmetic outcomes compared to the open group. The learning curves for work area preparation, unilateral thyroid lobectomy, and the entire surgical process were 59, 28, and 50 cases, respectively. There were no differences between the learning and proficient groups, except for operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and drainage volume on the first postoperative day. CONCLUSIONS A comprehensive analysis of the TOETVA learning curve utilizing cumulative and analytical methods demonstrated the feasibility of TOETVA with regards to surgical integrity, safety, and oncological safety. This study's findings suggest that a surgeon's cumulative number of TOETVA cases exceeding 50 can reach the mastery stage. Moreover, diagnosing CASTLE is challenging and necessitates immunohistochemical detection of relatively specific markers associated with thymic epithelial tumors.

Abstract
Background The transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is the most recently developed minimally invasive technique with no skin incision. For tissue dissection and bleeding control, the use of proper energy devices is very important in endoscopic thyroid surgery. To date, there have been no clinical studies reported regarding which energy device is better in TOETVA, ultrasonic shears or advanced bipolar device. The aim of our study is to determine which energy device is more useful for TOETVA. Methods This study was designed as an open-label, prospective randomized controlled trial in a single university hospital. Patients were randomly assigned to the ultrasonic group or advanced bipolar group before the surgery. From June 2020 to May 2022, 40 patients were enrolled (20 patients were assigned to the ultrasonic group, and 20 patients were assigned to the advanced bipolar group). Primary endpoints were operation time for lobectomy, number of camera cleanings, and blood loss during the lobectomy. Secondary endpoints were pain score, postoperative drainage, and blood chemistry. A single endocrine surgeon had performed all surgeries. Results There were no significant differences between the two groups in age, sex, body mass index (BMI), tumor location, preoperative cytology, or surgical extent. The time for lobectomy was significantly shorter in the advanced bipolar group (33.8±6.4 vs. 41.9±9.0 minutes, P=0.002). The number of camera cleanings was significantly lower in the advanced bipolar group (2.9±1.6 vs. 5.8±2.5 times, P<0.001). Estimated blood loss was also significantly less in the advanced bipolar group (11.5±17.3 vs. 81.8±99.5 mL, P=0.004). Postoperative hospital stays, drainage, pain score, laboratory findings, and complications were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions According to this study, advanced bipolar device showed better performance, with a shorter operation time, less camera cleaning, and less blood loss. We suggest that advanced bipolar device can be a better choice in TOETVA. Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT04320901.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) and gasless transaxillary endoscopic thyroidectomy (GTET) are 2 newly applied technologies. This study is to compare the 2 approaches from the aspects of effectiveness and safety. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 339 patients who underwent TOETVA or GTET with unilateral papillary thyroid carcinoma were enrolled in this study from March 2019 to February 2022. The 2 groups were compared in terms of patient characteristics, perioperative clinical results, and postoperative outcomes. RESULTS The operative time of the TOETVA group was significantly longer than the GTET group (141.39±16.11 vs. 98.45±12.24, P <0.05). The TOETVA group had advantages over GTET group when the reduction of parathyroid hormone was compared (19.18±17.43 vs. 23.07±15.72, P <0.05). Meanwhile, more parathyroids were detected in central neck specimens in GTET group (40/181 vs. 21/158, P <0.05). TOETVA had an advantage on total number of central lymph nodes over GTET (7.65±3.11 vs. 4.99±2.45, P <0.05), whereas the number of positive central lymph nodes was similar ( P >0.05). No differences were found between the 2 groups on other data. CONCLUSIONS TOETVA and GTET are both safe and effective for unilateral papillary thyroid carcinomas. TOETVA has advantage on protection of inferior parathyroid glands and harvest of central lymph node dissection. Meanwhile, GTET can save more time compared with TOETVA. Surgeons and patients should freely choose the approaches based on their demands.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the intraoperative outcomes and postoperative complications of patients experiencing transoral thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOTVA) and conventional open thyroidectomy (COT). PUBMED, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials in the Cochrane Library, and Web of science expanded between January 2007 and November 2022 comparing TOTVA and COT was exhaustively searched. Fifteen non-randomized controlled studies involving 2955 patients were included. The results of meta-analyses indicated that TOTVA was associated with longer operative time (WMD, 66.86; 95%CI, 47.15-86.56; P < 0.00001), more blood loss (WMD, 2.83; 95%CI, 1.77-3.90; P < 0.00001), higher incidence of wound infection (OR, 5.62; 95%CI, 1.57-20.10, P = 0.008). There was no significant difference in terms of transient recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) palsy and other postoperative outcomes. In conclusion, TOTVA appears to be a feasible and safe approach for the treatment of patients with benign thyroid nodules and selected differential thyroid carcinomas just like the COT.

Abstract
Background The endoscopic thyroidectomy bilateral areola approach (ETBAA) improved cosmetic outcomes significantly and is now widely applied. The usage of drainage tubes is controversial in conventional open thyroidectomy (COT), but studies about drainage placement decisions during ETBAA are still limited. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of having no drainage tube applied during ETBAA on patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. Methods The clinical data of patients undergoing ETBAA from July 2018 to May 2021 was retrospectively collected. The patients were divided into two groups based on drain placement: no-drain and drain. The two groups were matched at a ratio of 1:1. Fifty-five patients from each group were finally included. Postoperative complications and follow-up data were compared between the two groups. Results No significant difference was observed between the two groups in the incidence of postoperative complications, including hemorrhage, surgical site infection, and subcutaneous seroma. Compared with the drain group, the operation time of the no-drain group was significantly shorter [(107.75 ± 24.59) min vs. (119.91 ± 34.05) min, P < 0.05]. The total and postoperative hospital stay was significantly shorter in the no-drain group [(2.40 ± 0.71) days vs. (4.78 ± 1.33) days, P < 0.001, (2.04 ± 0.19) days vs. (2.15 ± 0.36) days, P < 0.05], and the costs of surgical consumables were also significantly lower [(6,820.83 ± 164.29) CNY vs. (7,494.13 ± 216.7) CNY, P < 0.05]. The postoperative pain score of the no-drain group was significantly lower than the drain group [(1.58 ± 0.63) vs. (1.89 ± 0.76), P < 0.05]. Conclusions No drainage applied during ETBAA on papillary thyroid carcinoma is safe and feasible. This practice does not increase the risk of postoperative complications, but it does shorten the operation time and hospital stay, as well as reduce medical costs. Furthermore, it alleviates the suffering of patients.

Abstract
Endoscopic thyroidectomy has evolved from a hybrid approach utilizing a laparoscopic assistant and robotic-assistance to pure flexible endoscopic thyroidectomy without laparoscopic assistance. However, all the hybrid approaches are complicated and results in scar somewhere on the body surface. Current experimental and clinical studies focus on the implementation of new minimally invasive approaches such as flexible endoscopic thyroidectomy which leaves no scar on the body surface and easier to perform. Flexible endoscopic thyroidectomy is seeming to be a relatively safe and feasible technique with good outcomes. However, more research, particularly using newly developed tools to further improve this technique, and large scaled practice is needed to make it more available to patients worldwide. This article summarizes established endoscopic thyroidectomy techniques and highlight the pros and cons of different available endoscopic approaches to thyroid resection, and discussed how flexible endoscopic thyroidectomy compares to the well establish techniques and future perspective.

Abstract
This review focuses on complications linked to trans-oral endoscopic thyroidectomy via vestibular approach (TOETVA) and aimed to elucidate the procedure's initial safety profile. According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane databases were screened till May 2021. Twenty-eight articles, nine cohorts and nineteen case series, met the inclusion criteria. Procedure-related complications were analyzed, the most important being hypoparathyroidism: transient (range=0.94-22.2%), permanent (range=1.33-2.22%), and recurrent laryngeal nerve injury: transient (range=1.9-8.8%) and permanent (range=0.59-1.42%). Surgical trauma related complications, the most prevalent being seroma, emphysema, and hematoma accounted for 2.91%. Null mortality was reported. Although current evolving experience indicates that TOETVA is safe and linked to acceptable complication rates, the method needs to be compared with the gold standard of traditional thyroidectomy in the context of sufficiently numbered cohorts and ultimately randomized controlled trials.

Transoral thyroidectomy vestibular approach versus non-transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy: a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis. Surg Endosc 2021; 36:1739-1749. Abstract
BACKGROUND To conduct a meta-analysis to compare the short-term outcomes of transoral thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOTVA) with non-transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy (NTET). METHODS MEDLINE, EMBASE, science citation index expanded, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials in the Cochrane Library from January 2007 to January 2021 were searched for relevant literature. The evaluated endpoints were intra-operative and post-operative outcomes. RESULTS Ten eligible, non-randomized comparative studies involving 1677 patients were included. Meta-analysis results revealed that TOTVA was associated with significantly longer operative time [weighted mean differences (WMD), 22.60; 95%confidence interval (CI), 7.51-37.69; P = 0.003]. No significant differences were found between TOTVA group and NTET group in terms of post-operative outcomes. CONCLUSION TOTVA appears to be an equally feasible and safe surgical procedure as NTET for patients with benign thyroid nodules and selected differentiated thyroid carcinomas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transoral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA) is a natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery that offers a truly scarless approach to thyroidectomy. Introduced in 2008, there is a growing body of literature establishing it as a safe endoscopic approach for thyroid procedures. While it is not yet widely practiced, it is quickly growing in popularity. As more surgeons begin to add this technique to their repertoire the question of the learning curve has to be examined. METHODS Case series from the initial TOETVA operations of four surgeons at three different hospitals were examined. Binomial and ordinal logistic regression were used to characterize the changes in complication rate and severity as they related to case number in the series. Statistics were performed in Minitab and SAS. RESULTS Each surgeon performed between 23 and 40 TOETVA operations for a total of 130 cases. Binary logistic regression shows a negative relationship between case number and complication rate (P < 0.001, Odds Ratio: 0.91). Ordinal logistic regression shows a negative relationship between case number and complication severity (P < 0.001, Odds Ratio: 1.07). The maximum slope of improvement of complication rate occurred at case number 12. CONCLUSION The most significant decrease in complications for TOETVA occurs at case 12. As case number progresses, there is a significant decrease in both the risk of a complication occurring and of the severity of that complication. These results support the previously published data on TOETVA learning curve based on operative time.

Abstract
CONTEXT.— Since 2016, transoral endoscopic thyroid resection with vestibular approach (TOETVA) has become increasingly performed in the United States. Although guidelines for the procedure are evolving, indeterminate and malignant preoperative cytopathologic diagnoses are not a contraindication. There are limited data related to the pathologic examination of these specimens. OBJECTIVE.— To examine the clinicopathologic features of TOETVA specimens with particular attention to limitations of interpretation of pathologic parameters and final diagnosis. DESIGN.— We reviewed age, sex, preoperative imaging and cytologic diagnoses, surgical pathology, and clinical follow-up data in TOETVA resections at our institution between March 2016 and December 2019. RESULTS.— Fifty cases of TOETVA were identified, comprising 48 women and 2 men with a mean age of 47 years. Preoperative cytologic diagnoses were available in 47 cases and included 19 nondiagnostic/benign (Bethesda I/II), 24 follicular lesion of undetermined significance/suspicious for follicular neoplasm (Bethesda III/IV), and 4 suspicious/malignant diagnoses (Bethesda V/VI). Thirty-four cases (68%) among the surgical resection specimens showed disruption and/or fragmentation. Thirty-nine cases were negative for carcinoma, including hyperplasias and benign/indolent neoplasms. Eleven cases exhibited papillary thyroid carcinoma. Final diagnoses were reached in all disrupted/fragmented cases. In 2 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma, tumor size, microscopic extrathyroidal extension, and margin status could not be determined. CONCLUSIONS.— A significant proportion of TOETVA specimens are disrupted/fragmented, which can compromise information about tumors, including size, number, margin status, and microscopic extrathyroidal extension. Given that these parameters inform treatment and follow-up, this should be considered when selecting patients for TOETVA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Decreased regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) is associated with neurological events. We aimed to investigate the effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation applied to the neck during transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) surgery on the rSO2. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients scheduled for TOETVA and open thyroidectomy (OT) were enrolled between October 2019 and November 2020. Alongside hemodynamic parameters, the rSO2 values of the patients were recorded at 5 different times. These were; before anesthesia induction (T0), 10 minutes after anesthesia induction (T1), 5 minutes after the patient was placed in the operation position (T2), 10 minutes after the CO2 insufflation in the TOETVA group, 10 minutes after the platysma incision in the OT group (T3), 10 minutes after the CO2 desufflation in the TOETVA group, 10 minutes after platysma closure in the OT group (T4), at the end of the surgery (T5). RESULTS A total of 40 patients, 20 in each group, were included in the study. The surgery duration was 113±26.9 minutes in the OT group, while it was 274.1±78.1 minutes in the TOETVA group (P=0.000). The EtCO2 values during the T3 time interval; group OT 31±2.2, group TOETVA 33.9±2.1 (P=0.000). The rSO2 values of the patients were similar, except for the T3 time interval. While the right rSO2 value we obtained during the T3 time interval in the TOETVA and OT groups were 66.9±9.1 and 73.9±7.8 (P=0.013), the left rSO2 value in the TOETVA and OT groups were 66.3±9.9 and 74.8±6.8 (P=0.003), respectively. CONCLUSIONS As long as the patients stay within the limits of normocapnia, the CO2 insufflation applied during TOETVA surgery has no negative effects on rSO2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Endoscopic thyroidectomy via areola approach (ETA) has been widely used in thyroidectomy for many years as it can effectively avoid a scar in the neck. Transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is newly applied and has gained popularity quickly. This study is to compare the safety and effectiveness of TOETVA and ETA. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 95 patients who underwent TOETVA or ETA with unilateral papillary thyroid carcinoma were enrolled in this study from March 2019 to February 2020. The basic information (such as gender, age), intraoperative hemorrhage, postoperative drainage volume, hospital durations, intraoperative and postoperative complications, operative time, central lymph node dissection time, total number of central lymph nodes, and number of metastatic central lymph nodes were compared. RESULTS The operative time of the TOETVA group was significantly longer than the ETA group (148.11±19.78 vs. 135.90±12.77 min, P<0.05). However, the result was opposite when central lymph node dissection time was compared (10.31±2.93 vs. 12.48±3.55, P<0.05). TOETVA had an advantage on total number of central lymph nodes over ETA (7.82±3.35 vs. 5.26±2.45, P<0.05). No differences were found between the 2 groups on other data. CONCLUSION TOETVA and ETA have the similarity on surgical safety and effectiveness. TOETVA has its advantage on central lymph node dissection and might be a reasonable alternative for ETA and open surgery in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to explore the feasibility and safety of transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy via vestibular approach (TOETVA) compared with endoscopic thyroidectomy via bilateral areola approach (ETBAA) in the treatment of patients with benign thyroid nodules. MATERIALS AND METHODS From January 2017 to December 2018, 60 patients who received TOETVA were enrolled as the research group; 65 patients who underwent ETBAA were included as the control group. A retrospective study was performed using the clinical data for these cases. All patients were diagnosed with benign nodules by preoperative examinations. Parameters including surgical trauma, complications, cosmetic satisfaction, and postoperative discomfort were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS All operations were completed without incident. There were significant differences in operation time (137.8±18.7 vs. 95.7±17.2 min), intraoperative blood loss (16.8±9.1 vs. 24.6±16.6 mL), drainage volume (123.1±20.9 vs. 153.6±40.2 mL), C-reactive protein level (7.2±5.2 vs. 9.0±4.7 mg/L), drainage time (3.2±0.6 vs. 3.9±1.3 d), postoperative hospital stay (3.3±0.8 vs. 4.1±1.5 d), and sense of skin tension on the neck (0% vs. 10.8%) between the TOETVA and ETBAA groups (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in pain score, incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury, transient hypoparathyroidism, infection, inadvertent parathyroidectomy, or swallow discomfort between the 2 groups. The cosmetic satisfaction score in the TOETVA group was significantly higher than that in the ETBAA group at 1 month after surgery (9.8±0.5 vs. 9.4±0.9, P<0.05), but at 3 months after the operation, the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS TOETVA was accompanied by less surgical trauma and skin tension on the neck than ETBAA, and the cosmetic effect of this approach was better than that of ETBAA in the early postoperative period. TOETVA for benign thyroid nodules is safe and feasible. However, there are disadvantages with TOETVA, such as a long surgical period. More cases and further research are needed to delve further into this approach.

Abstract
Background: The transoral endoscopic approach to the central neck has rapidly become one of the most widely utilized remote-access approaches for thyroid and parathyroid surgery in the world. The approach involves three small incisions inside the lower lip and has an optimal cosmetic outcome with no visible scar. However, the technique is quite difficult and poses several challenges that limit its widespread adoption. To overcome these issues, a novel lateral vestibular approach (LaVA) was explored in cadavers. Methods: Study using 7 fresh human cadavers that were dissected using open and endoscopic techniques to explore the feasibility of a transoral vestibular approach to the central neck without gas insufflation. Results: This novel approach resulted in wide access to the central neck and allowed for a total thyroidectomy and central neck dissection while preserving the marginal mandibular and mental nerves. Conclusions: LaVA permits excellent access to the central neck with a wide working space without the need for gas insufflation and overcomes many of the limitations of current transoral endoscopic approaches to the central neck.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parenchymal fibrosis, which develops in the case of thyroiditis, makes thyroidectomy difficult and increases complication rates. Similar concerns exist within minimally invasive thyroid surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of the transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) procedure in patients with thyroiditis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The data of 56 patients who underwent TOETVA between February 2018 and March 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were classified as those who had lymphocytic or Hashimoto thyroiditis (group T) and those who did not (group NT) in the postoperative pathology results. Results were evaluated in terms of intraoperative, postoperative findings, and complications. RESULTS All patients were female individuals with a median age of 43 (21-76). There were 21 (37%) patients in group T and 35 (63%) patients in group NT. Mean operation times were 174.2±37.4 and 201.4±45.6 minutes in groups T and NT (P=0.025), respectively, and were statistically shorter in group T. Blood loss was 37.9±44.5 and 34.6±46.8 mL (P=0.811) in groups T and NT, respectively. Transient recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy occurred in 1 patient (5%) in group T, 1 (3%) in group NT (P=0.712), and transient hypoparathyroidism occurred in 3 patients (14%) in group T and in 7 (20%) in group NT. There was no difference in terms of intraoperative and postoperative complications. CONCLUSION Although thyroiditis is a condition that complicates thyroidectomy, TOETVA can be applied with similar complication rates in patients with thyroiditis.
