Pleomorphic Adenoma of Superficial and Deep Parotid Gland: A Case Report

Parotid gland is the largest salivary gland of the body. Pleomorphic adenomas are the most prevalent benign parotid gland tumors. They can eventually grow to a size where they weigh several kilograms if not timely addressed. The 'pleomorphic' characteristics are attributed to the origin of the tumor from the connective tissue and epithelium. Pleomorphic adenomas often arise from the superficial lobe, further extending into the parapharyngeal space and gland's other deeper tissues. Common incidence is noted in females between 30 and 50 years. Tumors typically present as asymptomatic swelling and progress slowly. The cornerstone of treatment is surgical removal of the tumor mass, with great care being given to protect the facial nerve. Most of these tumors are observed with the involvement of the superficial lobe; only a few are observed involving the deep lobe. This case report presents an intriguing case of a pleomorphic adenoma of superficial and deep parotid gland in a 65-year-old male. The left side of the patient's face had a steadily increasing, asymptomatic swelling on admission. Magnetic resonance imaging of the neck revealed a pleomorphic adenoma of the superficial and deep parotid gland. The patient underwent surgical excision of the parotid gland, which was uneventful.

Basal Cell Adenoma of the Upper Lip: Report of a Rare Case With Literature Review

Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare, benign tumor originating from the epithelial cells of the salivary glands. It was earlier categorized as a subtype of monomorphic adenoma with distinctive histopathological features. BCA usually manifests as asymptomatic, slow-growing masses that exhibit a site and age predilection, commonly affecting the major salivary glands of elderly female patients. Histologically, solid, trabecular, tubular, and membranous patterns are recognized. It is imperative to establish a precise distinction between BCA, pleomorphic adenoma, and malignant salivary gland tumors before initiating treatment to ensure effective management. The standard treatment approach is surgical resection of the tumor. Recurrence and malignant transformation rarely occur, except for the membranous subtype. This article aims to report an unusual case of BCA arising from a minor salivary gland in the upper lip. The post-operative course was unremarkable, with complete healing of the surgical site. No recurrence was observed during a one-year follow-up. BCA arising from a minor salivary gland in the upper lip is an extremely uncommon entity. A comprehensive review of BCA in the upper lip, reported from 1991 to December 2023, revealed only 14 cases.

A Large Pleomorphic Adenoma in Nasal Cavity Misdiagnosed as Inverted Papilloma

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a benign tumor characterized by slow-growing mixed tumors in the craniofacial area. It is relatively common in salivary glands; however, PA of the nasal cavity, which arises in the minor salivary glands, is rare. We present the case of a large PA in the nasal cavity of an adult immunocompetent woman with nasal obstruction and intermittent epistaxis. Based on preoperative radiologic examinations, she was misdiagnosed with an inverted papilloma. Endoscopic resection was performed under general anesthesia. Pathologically, the patient was confirmed to have PA, which has great cellularity and few stromal components. No complications or recurrences during the 1-year follow-up period were observed.

Correlation of Clinical and Histopathological Features of Salivary Pleomorphic Adenoma

Statement of the Problem

Salivary gland tumors represent about 3% of the head and neck tumors. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign salivary gland tumor.

Purpose

This study was conducted to investigate and describe some clinical and histopathological aspects of salivary pleomorphic adenomas with special reference to the epithelial and mesenchymal components.

Materials and Method

In this retrospective study, one hundred tissue samples diagnosed as PA were sourced from archival tissue blocks between 2009 and 2019 in this retrospective study. Some clinical and demographic features, including age, sex, tumor size, and tumor location were recorded. This study included only samples taken by excisional biopsy. Then, the samples were histologically classified into three subtypes according to the proportion of epithelial and stromal components. The demographic and clinicopathological variables were statistically analyzed using Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test, considering a significance level of 5% (p< .05).

Results

In the present study, most cases (61%) were found in females, representing a female-male ratio of 1.6:1. The peak incidence was seen in the 4th and 5th decades of life. In 87% of cases, PA occurred in major salivary glands. There was a significant difference between the age of the patient and squamous metaplasia (p= 0.036). There was also a significant difference between the size of tumor and the amount of myxoid stroma (p= 0.021). Extensive myxoid stroma was mostly seen in tumors larger than 3.37cm (p= 0.001). In addition, there was a statistically significant difference between capsular invasion and the development of squamous metaplasia (p= 0.001).

Conclusion

In this study, there was a significant correlation between the gland type and capsular features and between the size of tumor and rate of squamous metaplasia. A detailed clinical and histopathological analysis of PAs may provide a better insight to the pathophysiology of the lesion, tumor cell differentiation, and prognostic factors.

Influence of p16 Protein Immunostaining on Histopathological Features of Pleomorphic Adenoma and Carcinoma ex- Pleomorphic Adenoma

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of p16 in histologic characteristics and transition of Pleomorphic Adenoma (PA) to Carcinoma ex-PA (CxPA). So, 60 PA and 4 CxPA were histologic reviewed based on microscopic characteristics proposed by Hellquist, Triantafyllou and Dulguerov (PA) and Morais, Antony and Toluie (CxPA). Immunostaining for p16 was associated in different parenchyma and stroma of both tumors and Fisher's/chi-square tests and Mann-Whitney test were performed (SPSS v20.0, p<0.05). In PA the periductal cells were predominantly p16- and that ductal and myoepithelial cells showed a significant increase in p16+ cells (p<0.001). In CxPA, none of the cases showed p16+ in periductal cells, most parotid cases showed p16+ in ductal cells, and one case of parotid and the submandibular case showed mild immunostaining for myoepithelial cells. There was a small reduction in p16+ in CxPA compared to PA (p=0.537), but in both tumors there was less p16+ cells in solid stroma than other (p<0.001). The p16+ cases of PA had a higher capsular thickness (p=0.047). So, the loss of p16 immunostaining does not seem to be associated with the transition from PA to CxPA, but in both tumors the loss of p16+ cells are related to microscopic aggressiveness.

Surgical management of a giant parotid gland pleomorphic adenoma in Northern Sri Lanka: A case report

INTRODUCTION

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign tumour of the parotid gland. It is commonly observed in middle-aged women. Usually, pleomorphic adenomas are asymptomatic with a slow-progressing tendency. There is a substantial risk of malignant transformation if left untreated. Imaging modalities and fine needle aspiration cytology are highly valuable preoperative diagnostic tools and aid in selecting therapeutic interventions. Surgical technique is chosen based on clinical grounds.

PRESENTATION OF CASE

A 48-year-old woman presented with a painless extensive mass in the left-sided face. A provisional diagnosis of the benign parotid tumour was made based on clinical evaluation. Imaging studies and cytological assessment suggested pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid gland, and left-sided total parotidectomy with facial nerve dissection was performed.

DISCUSSION

Pleomorphic adenoma involving the deep lobe of the parotid gland is rare. It typically grows slowly. If left untreated, it can present as a giant mass, as in our case. The extensive tumour mass can also involve adjacent structures, including facial nerve. Therefore, surgical dissection must be involved facial nerve and adjacent muscles.

CONCLUSION

Surgical dissection of giant pleomorphic adenoma is challenging and often leads to significant deformities postoperatively. Early intervention will improve surgical outcomes and quality of life.

Management of a giant pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate: A case report

Benign mixed salivary gland tumor is comprised of epithelial and myoepithelial cells and represents up to 80% of tumors of the parotid gland. It is relatively rare in the soft palate and in other minor salivary glands. Surgery is the standard care.

Abstract

Salivary gland tumors are relatively rare and morphologically diverse group of lesions. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common salivary gland tumor, accounting for approximately 80% of all major and minor salivary gland tumors. PA usually affects the parotid gland. Huge PA occurring in soft palate is extremely rare. Patients with these tumors are usually between at the age of 40 and 60 years. The tumors exhibit pleomorphic nature microscopically that may pose diagnostic challenges to pathologists as may confuse PA histopathologically with other salivary gland tumors. Surgery is the standard treatment. The purpose of writing this case study is to describe unusual case of a giant PA of the soft palate found in a 44-year-old male successfully managed at our facility.

A Review of the Current Literature on Pleomorphic Adenoma

Pleomorphic adenomas (PA) are the most common benign salivary gland tumors. They arise from the major salivary glands, as well as the minor salivary glands. They may arise rarely from the palate, oral cavity, neck, and nasal cavity also. Yet, the fourth, fifth, and sixth decades of life are the most common for them to manifest. Forty percent of them occur in males and 60% in females. It is a benign mixed tumor, which has three components: an epithelial component, a myoepithelial cell component, and a mesenchymal component. A fibrous capsule separates these cells from the surrounding tissues. It generally presents as a slowly progressing painless swelling, which is well-delineated, nonsymptomatic, and not involving the facial nerve. Salivary gland tumors can be accurately diagnosed before surgery using fine-needle aspiration (FNA), ultrasonography (USG), and computed tomography (CT) scan. Calponin, cluster of differentiation 9 (CD9), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), Mcl-2, metastasis suppressor gene (NM23), p63, S-100, smooth muscle actin (SMA), and SRY-box transcription factor 10 (SOX10) exhibit the majority of the positive reactions in pleomorphic adenomas. The diagnostic marker pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1) is frequently employed since it is specific for pleomorphic adenoma. Although benign, these epithelial tumors have a propensity to recur and undergo malignant transformation if incompletely excised, leading to increased morbidity in these patients. A review of the consensus guidelines and literature was conducted, and the online literature on the subject from 2002 was included. This article is not a complete review of all the available literature; rather, it is a comprehensive review of the topic.

Heterotopic sites of pleomorphic adenoma

The majority of the tumours occurring in minor salivary glands are malignant with only 18% being benign. Among the benign tumours, pleomorphic adenoma is the most common. Although it presents more commonly in the parotid and submandibular glands, it can occur at any site where salivary glands reside. Only 6.4% of cases of pleomorphic adenoma occur in minor salivary glands, e.g. palate, cheeks, lips, para-pharyngeal space, etc. It occurs in females in the fourth or fifth decade. It presents as an asymptomatic and slow-growing mass. The treatment of choice is wide local excision due to the high rate of recurrence and malignant potential. We present rare case reports of two patients. The first case is of a young 18 years female presenting with recurrent neck (anterior triangle) swelling and the second case is of a 46-year-old female presenting with lower lip swelling. In both cases, it was a slow-growing mass and asymptomatic. Cytological examination of the lesion revealed the diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma. It was completely excised with no post-operative complication. Pleomorphic adenoma, although a common benign neoplasm of major salivary glands, should always be kept as a possibility at the locations of minor salivary glands. As pleomorphic adenoma can transform into a malignant counterpart, therefore early diagnosis and treatment of the lesion can prevent further complications. The prognosis of pleomorphic adenoma is excellent. However, a close follow-up of the patient is required due to the high rate of recurrence.

Surgical tumour excision of pleomorphic adenoma of submandibular salivary gland: A case report and literature review

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE

Pleomorphic adenoma is a benign tumour commonly found in salivary glands and surgical excision is the preferred treatment.

CASE PRESENTATION

This case report describes a 37-year-old male patient who was psychologically affected, socially stigmatised and economically jeopardised, underwent successful surgical excision of a pleomorphic adenoma in the submandibular gland. The procedure involved making a lower submandibular incision through the skin, followed by blunt dissection to approach the tumour, where the whole gland was involved and excised. Haemostasis was achieved through compression, transfixing, and under-running sutures. The patient recovered well without any complications and was discharged with a good outlook.

CLINICAL DISCUSSION

Proper diagnosis and using proper surgical techniques is essential to ensure favourable outcomes. Early diagnosis and prompt management of pleomorphic adenoma are crucial to prevent complications and improve the patient's quality of life.

CONCLUSION

Surgical tumour excision is a safe and effective treatment for pleomorphic adenoma in the submandibular gland. Successful surgery has significant changes in the quality of life of the patient.

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Deep Lobe of the Parotid Gland Presenting With Dysphagia: A Case Report

Dysphagia is a common clinical manifestation with a wide range of underlying medical conditions. Here, we present a case of a 52-year-old man with dysphagia, found to have a pleomorphic adenoma in the right parotid gland causing significant pharyngeal wall distortion. The patient underwent a successful total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation using a transparotid-transcervical approach. A histological examination confirmed the diagnosis. While the patient experienced temporary facial weakness post-surgery, he had a successful recovery with no further issues during the 2-year follow-up. This case highlights the importance of considering parotid gland tumors as a potential cause of dysphagia when a mass is present in the oropharynx. Additionally, it demonstrates the feasibility of using a transparotid-transcervical approach for total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation.

Surgical Treatment of a Giant Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Submandibular Gland: A Case Report

Pleomorphic adenomas (PAs) are the most common benign salivary neoplasms. PAs are generally slow-growing but may sometimes become aggressive and grow rapidly within a short period of time. Here, we report the case of an 83-year-old Chinese woman with an anterior neck mass that had been growing over the past 30 years. She felt uncomfortable because the mass had grown quite rapidly in the past year. The final diagnosis of a PA of the left submandibular gland was confirmed by histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations after surgical resection. Our patient recalled a history of an excision of a neck mass 40 years prior to presentation at another hospital. Based on our imaging findings and surgical findings, we speculate that the neck mass 40 years prior may also have been a PA. Our case reminds us the rare recurrence possibility of PAs, and early and thorough resection may have a good prognosis. In addition, to the best of our knowledge, this is the largest PA of the submandibular gland reported to date.

Extracapsular Dissection for Small Benign Tumors of Parotid Gland: A Case Report on Contemporary Technique

Salivary gland tumor looms as painless enlarging mass which may embrace in both major or minor glands. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) accord about 40-70% of all salivary gland tumors, where Warthin tumor, basal cell adenoma (BCA), adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), and sebaceous tumors have a strong predilection for major salivary gland. However, polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) has a marked predilection for the minor salivary gland. We present a case of PA in a 26-year-old male patient that has been successfully managed by extracapsular dissection (ECD) without any post-operative complications.

A Diagnostically Challenging Parotid Gland Tumor With Hybrid Features

Salivary gland tumors are relatively uncommon with most being benign. When diagnosed the most common benign and malignant tumors are pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), respectively. However, not uncommonly, it is difficult to differentiate between the histopathological entities, leading to a diagnostic dilemma that can impact a patient’s treatment and prognosis. A 24-year-old woman presented with a three-year history of asymptomatic left-sided facial swelling. She denied any prior history of head and neck radiation. There was no history of alcohol consumption or smoking exposure and there was no personal or family history of head and neck cancers. Additionally, she did not have any known occupational or environmental exposures. Due to the chronicity and painless nature of this facial mass, our patient did not pursue evaluation initially. Subsequently, she experienced an increase in size and pain for a few months exacerbated by swallowing. She had no other symptoms. On physical examination, a 3 x 3 cm left parotid gland mass was noted. There was no associated head or neck lymphadenopathy and compression of the left facial mass did not elicit secretions from the opening of Stensen’s duct. Due to the rapid increase in size, she was sent for CT neck/soft tissue with contrast which confirmed a 3.56 x 2.67 cm solid nodule within the superficial portion of the left parotid gland. This was followed by an MRI orbit/face/neck with and without contrast, for further delineation, which demonstrated a 4 x 3.7 x 3 cm complex heterogeneous mass within the superficial left parotid gland. Thereafter the patient underwent an uncomplicated ultrasound-guided biopsy of the parotid mass. The histopathological appraisal concluded that this was a cellular pleomorphic adenoma, with mucinous and squamous metaplasia with reactive lymph nodes. Due to the new rapid increase in size and intense painful nature of this tumor, nerve-sparing left parotidectomy, fat grafting and reconstruction were completed. Cellular pleomorphic adenomas are benign low-grade neoplasms, typified as biphasic with both epithelial and myoepithelial components. However, they have increased cellularity and focally increased mitotic activity, not advanced enough to qualify as malignant. The presence of mucinous and squamous metaplasia is of diagnostic interest as it makes diagnosis on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) morphologically challenging. These findings are typical of MEC and on FNA can be misleading in the setting of a pleomorphic adenoma. However, on histopathological evaluation of the gross specimen along with immunohistochemical staining the diagnosis is made much easier. A diagnosis of MEC would have potentially required neck dissection and adjuvant therapy with a potential increased risk of morbidity and mortality. This case emphasises the importance of an adequate tissue biopsy in regards to parotid gland tumors to optimise a patient's care plan.

Colossal Parotid Tumors: A Diagnostic and Surgical Challenge

Tumors of the salivary glands constitute 3% of all head and neck tumors. The parotid gland (PG) is the most common site involved in 85% of cases. PG tumors' size varies from a few millimeters to several centimeters and is about 2-6 cm on average. However, because of insidious growth and asymptomatic nature, untreated tumors of the PG can attain large size. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA), as large as 33 cm in size or 26.5 kg in weight, has been reported in the literature. Similarly, untreated Warthin’s tumor (WT) rarely becomes giant, size up to 20 cm is reported. Giant PG tumors are commonly symptomatic and have a rare tendency to become malignant.

We are reporting two giant PG tumors with different histopathological diagnoses, PA and WT of size 15x15 cm and 10x8 cm, respectively. Therefore, with a size of 10 cm, our case is the second-largest WT reported in the literature. Both the giant PG tumors were present for 15-20 years, and mild pain and discomfort were the only symptoms. We had the differential preoperative tissue diagnosis in fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) because of varying consistency. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the neck were done for these cases for preoperative planning. Compared to the former, the latter was more informative about nerve involvement preoperatively. Both the patients underwent superficial parotidectomy, and meticulous dissection was done to identify and safeguard the facial nerve and its branches. We had a challenge in closing the flaps, which was achieved with an acceptable cosmetic outcome. Both the patients were discharged in stable condition with minimal facial nerve weakness.

Ponderous Pleomorphic Adenoma of Parotid Obscuring a Grievous Tumor of the Head and Neck: A Rare Case Report

We present a rare case of simultaneous occurrence of pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid gland and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of left buccal mucosa in a 59-year-old patient. The synchronous occurrence of these two entities has not been reported in the literature. A PubMed database search did not yield any results for search words involving “Oral Cancer,” “Synchronous Oral Cancer and Pleomorphic Adenoma of Parotid gland” and “Oral SCC and Pleomorphic Adenoma of Parotid gland.” Furthermore, synchronous development of these two tumors may give rise to diagnostic and ma?nagement conundrums as the parotid growth may be considered to be a nodal metastasis.

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Parotid Gland and Ipsilateral Thyroid Incidentaloma: Report of A Rare Case With Review of Literature

BACKGROUND

Pleomorphic adenomas are benign tumors of the salivary glands that mainly affect the lower pole of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. The term "pleomorphic" refers to the epithelial and connective origin of the mass. The clinical presentation is typically that of asymptomatic swelling which increases in volume. Therapy consists in surgical removal of the tumor mass by parotidectomy with nerve preservation.

CASE DETAILS

This clinical case describes an interesting case of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland in a 62-year-old patient. The patient presented with a long history of an asymptomatic mildly worsening swelling of the left parotid region. The peculiarity of the clinical case is the dimension of the adenoma (9x5x9 cm) and the presence of a thyroid incidentaloma (TI), consisting of a thyroid multinodular goiter composed of nodules, the largest of which measured 8 cm in diameter. This mass dislocated the laryngotracheal axis, compressed the larynx and caused the reduction of the respiratory space, making orotracheal intubation difficult and determining the need to perform a tracheotomy.

CONCLUSION

Benign pleomorphic adenomas can potentially reach large sizes if untreated. Socio-economic problems may be the reason for late diagnosis.

Análise volumétrica de adenoma pleomórfico palatino como aprimoramento diagnóstico e de plano de tratamento: relato de caso

O adenoma pleomórfico (AP) é o tumor benigno mais comum dentre as neoplasias das glândulas salivares. Softwares de reconstrução tridimensional oferecem ferramentas de caracterização da lesão, permitindo avaliar a morfologia da doença, analisar estruturas anatômicas isoladas, e elevar a acurácia do tratamento. O objetivo deste artigo é demonstrar como o uso da reconstrução tridimensional tem o potencial de contribuir para a elucidação da morfologia da doença, levando os profissionais da saúde à execução de um tratamento preciso e eficaz por meio de diagnóstico e planejamentos pré- operatórios virtuais. Apresenta-se um caso de um homem de 37 anos, portador de adenoma pleomófico palatino sem queixa álgica. Não apenas a morfologia da doença foi estudada, mas o volume da lesão foi calculado, medindo 2.304 mm3. O volume da doença atuou como um marcador que possibilitou avaliar a extensão da lesão e o comprometimento das regiões adjacentes.

Pleomorphic Adenoma: A Systematic Review

Background

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a commonly occurring benign tumor originating in the salivary glands.

Objective

The aim was to carry out a systematic literature of reports on pleomorphic adenoma from 2000 to 2018 to determine patient's age spread, gender, anatomical location, capsular invasion, histopathology, treatment and patient outcome.

Materials and methods

A PubMed search was conducted with the following key words: adenoma, pleomorphic adenoma, and mixed salivary tumor.

Results

Twenty-two articles in English were read in full after fulfilling the eligibility criteria. The mean age of PA occurrence was 44.14 years with a definite female predilection (M:F ratio = 13:8). It most commonly occurred in the facial region (42.85%), and surgical approach is the preferred intervention.

Conclusion

Pleomorphic adenomas are benign salivary gland neoplasms that can grow into extensive sizes if left untreated and hence need to be diagnosed early. Complete excision of the tumor is the definitive treatment, as enucleation can result in recurrence. Facial nerve has to be preserved if PA occurs in the parotid gland.

Pleomorphic adenoma: a rare presentation in buccal salivary gland with extensive squamous and mucous metaplasia

Pleomorphic Adenoma (PA) is the most common salivary gland tumor and accounts for about 60% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Intraorally, the hard palate is the most common presenting site (50-60%) followed by upper lip (15-20%) and rarely buccal mucosa (8-10%). Histopathologically, PA shows diverse morphology resulting from amalgamation of cellular and stromal components. The PA may show changes in the stromal and epithelial components, such as sebaceous, lipocytic and oncocytic metaplasia. A rare characteristic of PA is to show extensive squamous and mucous differentiation which poses diagnostic dilemma to the pathologist. Here, we present an unusual case of PA of buccal minor salivary gland with squamous and mucous metaplasia. The localization, gender and microscopic features of the presented case are unusual.

A Comparative Review of Mixed Mammary Tumors in Mammals

Mixed tumors are characterized by the histological identification of two or more cell types. Commonly, a mixture of epithelial and myoepithelial cells is included in abundant stroma, which can consist of myxoid, chondroid or bony matrices. Spontaneously arising mixed tumors are rare lesions in the human breast but are common in human salivary glands and canine mammary glands. Subtle histopathological characteristics and overlapping attributes of malignant lesions with other benign lesions can lead to a diagnostic challenge. Mixed tumors can present as benign or malignant. While malignant mixed tumors are quite rare in the human breast they have a poor prognosis. Benign mixed mammary tumors occur more frequently in female dogs than in humans and are usually associated with a good prognosis. This review will provide a comprehensive overview of mixed mammary tumors, across various mammalian species.

Pediatric Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Parotid: Case Report, Review of Literature and Novel Therapeutic Targets

Salivary gland tumors are extremely rare and encompass a diverse group of histologies. Less than 5% of the affected population is pediatric. We present a case of 6-year-old child with pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid. The patient underwent a superficial parotidectomy. Recurrence was not observed in the six months of follow-up. Surgery is the mainstay of the management of benign salivary gland tumors. Although novel molecular agents are being explored, personalized therapy would be a challenge due to the rarity and vast genetic/histologic variations of salivary gland tumors.

Pleomorphic Adenoma of Minor Salivary Glands in Child

Introduction:

Tumors of salivary glands are very rare in children overall, and rarely in minor salivary glands. Among them pleoomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of salivary glands in children and it acounts 60% of all salivary neoplasms, frequently found in major salivary glands (85 %) and rarely in minor salivary glands (10-15%). PA appears as painless oval mass, elastic consistency and smooth surface. It characterized by slow evolution of growing. The diagnosis can be confirmed only by histopathological features, after total excision of the lesion.

Case report:

This case report present the uncommon case of the formation well circumscribed in upper lip region, nearby the frenulum labii oris superior in 10 years old school girl. After clinical intraoral examination of the formation approximately 2cm in size the surgical treatment has been done and histopathologic analysis resulted as PA.

Conclusion:

Long term follow-up examination is necessary due to possible recurence or malignancy alteration.
