A review of electroacupuncture in bone repair: Mechanisms and clinical implications

The journey of bone repair is a lengthy process. Traditionally, oral or topical medications have been employed to facilitate healing, approaches that are not only costly but may also lead to adverse effects such as gastrointestinal damage. With advancements in electrophysiology, the significance of bioelectric activity in tissue repair has become increasingly prominent, thereby enhancing the focus on research into electroacupuncture (EA) for bone repair. EA, a synthesis of traditional acupuncture and electrical stimulation, can regulate pain by inhibiting the transmission of electrical signals, reducing the expression of ion channel proteins, and promoting the release of neurotransmitters at targeted sites. Moreover, EA has the capability to influence macrophage polarization and modulate inflammatory cytokines, aiding in bone repair. Additionally, EA has the potential to regulate cytokines such as Ephrin type-B receptor 4 (EphB4), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Erythropoietin (EPO), and Bone Morphogenetic Protein 2 (BMP-2), thus promoting angiogenesis and fracture healing.This paper explores the mechanisms by which EA facilitates bone healing and assesses its advantages and limitations in clinical applications. It offers a theoretical foundation for the safe, effective, and rational use of EA, presenting a novel approach for enhancing bone regeneration.

Efficacy and Safety of Electroacupuncture in the Treatment of Cerebral Infarction: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Purpose

The goal of this study was to see if electroacupuncture was effective and safe in the management of cerebral infarction. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were used to conduct a comprehensive literature survey.

Methods

Basic features of 7 studies were identified using the searching strategy. The investigation was found in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science, with the most recent search being in March 2022. "Electroacupuncture," "cerebral infarction," and their permutations were among the MeSH terms and free words used. As literature, two reviewers independently used a standardized form to gather pertinent data from qualifying research.

Results

157 literatures were identified and evaluated. Electroacupuncture improved the BI score in individuals with cerebral infarction (mean difference = 0.10, 95 percent CI: 0.00-0.20, p = 0.04). Electroacupuncture enhanced BI score in individuals with cerebral infarction (mean difference = 0.10, 95 percent CI: 0.00-0.20, p = 0.04). The effects of electroacupuncture increased Fugl-Meyer index in patients with cerebral infarction (mean difference = 25.92, 95% CI: 25.28-26.56, p < 0.00001). Electroacupuncture effects decreased CSS in patients with cerebral infarction in the experiment group (mean difference = -2.10, 95% CI: -2.53--1.67, p < 0.0001). Electroacupuncture also reduced CSS individuals with cerebral infarction in the control group; however, there was no statistically significant (risk difference = 0.06, 95 percent CI: 0.02-0.13, p = 0.12).

Conclusion

This study demonstrated that electroacupuncture helped decreased CSS in patients with cerebral infarction.

Evidence-Based Application of Acupuncture in Theriogenology

Historical evidence of acupuncture predates written history. It has been a component of Traditional Chinese veterinary medicine for many generations and is officially recognized in recorded history for treating equine disease in the Zhou Dynasty, circa 1050 BC. Drawing from a range of searchable databases, we present the use of veterinary acupuncture related to theriogenology. We touch on human-based medicine only as an introduction to current uses within veterinary medical acupuncture. This review is confined to the use of acupuncture encompassing dry needle, electroacupuncture, aquapuncture, and the few reports of laserpuncture. Starting with acupuncture’s influence on the master organs of reproduction, the hypothalamus and the pituitary glands, and the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, we then review reports specific to the gonads—ovaries and testicles—and then its influences on the uterus. From there, we review reports on the influence of acupuncture on pain associated with reproductive surgery, and finally, on the use of acupuncture for maternal lactation. Based on published reports, we conclude that acupuncture has been shown to be effective in many situations as a treatment for infertility and/or reproductive tract disfunction, resulting in improvements in both female and male patients.
