Abstract
Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infection and invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) infection cause a significant global health and economic burden. This systematic review aims to investigate the reported economic burden of NTS and iNTS infection, identify research gaps, and suggest future research directions. Data from PubMed and Embase databases up to April 2022 were reviewed, and articles were screened based on predefined criteria. Cost data were extracted, categorized into direct medical costs (DMCs), direct non-medical costs (DNMCs), and indirect costs (ICs), and converted into US dollars (year 2022). Data primarily originated from high-income countries (37 out of 38), with limited representation from Africa and resource-limited settings. For inpatients, DMCs were the primary cost driver for both NTS and iNTS illnesses, with estimates ranging from USD 545.9 (Taiwan, a region of China) to USD 21,179.8 (Türkiye) for NTS and from USD 1973.1 (Taiwan, a region of China) to USD 32,507.5 (United States of America) for iNTS per case. DNMCs and ICs varied widely across studies. Although study quality improved over time, methodological differences persisted. This review underscores the lack of economic data on NTS and iNTS in resource-limited settings. It also highlights the need for economic burden data in resource-limited settings and a standardized approach to generate global datasets, which is critical for informing policy decisions, especially regarding future vaccines.

Abstract
The burdens associated with acute gastroenteritis involve billions of dollars in expenses, coupled with significant morbidity and mortality globally. To reduce these burdens, health officials and policymakers require up-to-date data (health and economic) to request and allocate resources in guiding the development and implementation of preventative strategies. In 2021, the estimate for one case of acute gastroenteritis was calculated using multiple sources of data: the 2009 national health burden survey on acute gastroenteritis; a 2021 telephone survey of five major private hospitals; a 2021 telephone survey of 30 private pharmacies; and the 2021 Minimum Wages Act of Trinidad and Tobago. For each case of illness, an average cost of $1614 TTD ($238 USD) was estimated. For residents who sought private health care, the average GP visit cost was $500-$700 TTD ($73-$103 USD), while costs for medication prescribed ranged between $327 and $1166 TTD ($48-$172 USD). Productivity losses amounted to almost $21.7 million TTD ($3.2 million USD) for residents who took time off from work or required caregiving services. The overall annual cost was estimated to be $204 million TTD ($30.1 million USD) and, therefore, warrants measures by health officials to reduce the economic and social burdens of acute gastroenteritis in Trinidad and Tobago.

Abstract
Bacterial colonization on solid surfaces creates enormous problems across various industries causing billions of dollars' worth of economic damages and costing human lives. Biomimicking nanostructured surfaces have demonstrated a promising future in mitigating bacterial colonization and related issues. The importance of this non-chemical method has been elevated due to bacterial evolvement into antibiotic and antiseptic-resistant strains. However, bacterial attachment and viability on nanostructured surfaces under fluid flow conditions has not been investigated thoroughly. In this study, attachment and viability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) on a model nanostructured surface were studied under fluid flow conditions. A wide range of flow rates resulting in a broad spectrum of fluid wall shear stress on a nanostructured surface representing various application conditions were experimentally investigated. The bacterial suspension was pumped through a custom-designed microfluidic device (MFD) that contains a sterile Ti-6Al-4V substrate. The surface of the titanium substrate was modified using a hydrothermal synthesis process to fabricate the nanowire structure on the surface. The results of the current study show that the fluid flow significantly reduces bacterial adhesion onto nanostructured surfaces and significantly reduces the viability of adherent cells. Interestingly, the bactericidal efficacy of the nanostructured surface was increased under the flow by ∼1.5-fold against P. aeruginosa and ∼3-fold against S. aureus under static conditions. The bactericidal efficacy had no dependency on the fluid wall shear stress level. However, trends in the dead-cell count with the fluid wall shear were slightly different between the two species. These findings will be highly useful in developing and optimizing nanostructures in the laboratory as well as translating them into successful industrial applications. These findings may be used to develop antibacterial surfaces on biomedical equipment such as catheters and vascular stents or industrial applications such as ship hulls and pipelines where bacterial colonization is a great challenge.

Abstract
Salmonellosis is a climate-sensitive gastroenteritis with over 92 million cases and over 50,000 deaths a year globally. Australia has high rates of salmonellosis compared with other industrialised nations. This study used a negative binomial time-series regression model to investigate the association between Australian salmonellosis notifications and monthly climate variables including El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and mean temperature anomaly from 1991 to 2019. Between 1991 and 2019 in Australia there were 275,753 salmonellosis notifications and the median annual rate for salmonellosis was 40.1 per 100,000 population. Salmonellosis notifications exhibited strong seasonality, reaching a peak in summer and a minimum in winter. There was an estimated increase of 3.4 % in salmonellosis cases nationally per 1 °C increase in monthly mean temperature anomaly (incidence rate ratio [IRR] of 1.034, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.009, 1.059). Similar associations between salmonellosis and mean temperature anomaly were found for some states. Mean temperature anomaly exhibited an upward trend of 0.9 °C over the period 1991 to 2019. Additionally, a positive association was found between salmonellosis in Australia and ENSO whereby El Niño periods were associated with 7.9 % more salmonellosis cases compared to neutral periods (IRR 1.079, 95 % CI: 1.019, 1.143). A similar ENSO association was detected in the two eastern states of New South Wales and Queensland. This study suggests public health preventative measures to reduce salmonellosis could be enhanced in some regions during El Niño as well as during times of increased temperatures.

Abstract
Objective To explore the effect of Shugan Jianpi recipe combined with cross moxibustion on biochemical examination indexes and total score of TCM symptoms in patients with spleen-stomach damp-heat diarrhea irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Methods Sixty patients with spleen-stomach damp-heat diarrhea (IBS) treated in our hospital from January 2019 to September 2021 were enrolled. The patients were randomly assigned into the control group and study group. The control group was treated with Chang Shugan Jianpi recipe, and the study group was treated with Shugan Jianpi recipe combined with cross moxibustion. The curative effect, single symptom score, total score of TCM clinical symptoms, plasma gastrointestinal hormone level, IBS-QOL score, and recurrence were compared. Results First of all, we compared the curative effects. The study group was significantly effective in 24 cases, effective in 5 cases, and ineffective in 1 case, and the effective rate was 96.67%. In the control group, 13 cases were markedly effective, 10 cases were effective, and 7 cases were ineffective, and the effective rate was 76.67%. The effective rate of the study group was higher compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Secondly, the individual symptom scores were compared. Compared between the two groups, the scores of diarrhea times, stool characteristics, abdominal pain, and abdominal distension in the study group were lower compared to the control group (P < 0.05). After treatment, the total score of TCM clinical symptoms decreased. Compared between the two groups, the total score of TCM clinical symptoms in the study group was lower compared to the control group at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks after treatment (P < 0.05). After treatment, the levels of 5-HT and VIP decreased. The levels of 5-HT and VIP in the study group were lower compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The scores of anxieties, health worry, behavioral disorder, social reaction, somatic intention, interpersonal relationship, dietary concern, and sexual behavior in the study group were lower compared to the control group. The IBS-QOL scores were significantly lower compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Finally, we compared the recurrence. The recurrence rate in the study group was lower compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion The prescription combined with cross moxibustion has the effect of soothing the liver and invigorating the spleen, resolving dampness and stomach, and can reduce the main clinical symptoms of patients with diarrhea IBS of spleen-stomach damp-heat type, and the overall effect is significant. It can also enhance the emotional state of anxiety and depression and achieve the overall psychological and physical balance and health state, and the recurrence rate is low, which can be further applied in clinic.

Abstract
Weather can impact infectious disease transmission, particularly for heat-sensitive pathogens, such as Salmonella. We conducted an ecological time-series analysis to estimate short-term associations between nonoutbreak-related notifications of Salmonella and weather conditions-temperature and rainfall-in Melbourne, Australia from 2000 to 2019. Distributed lag nonlinear models were created to analyze weather-salmonellosis associations and potential lag times on a weekly time scale, controlling for seasonality and long-term trends. Warmer temperatures were associated with increased risk of notification. Effects were temporally lagged, with the highest associations observed for warm temperatures 2-6 (greatest at 4) weeks before notification. The overall estimated relative risk of salmonellosis increased twofold at 33°C compared to the average weekly temperature (20.35°C) for the 8-week period preceding the disease notification. For Salmonella Typhimurium alone, this occurred at temperatures over 32°C. There were no statistically significant associations with rainfall and notification rates in any of the analyses performed. This study demonstrates the short-term influences of warm temperatures on Salmonella infections in Melbourne over a 20-year period. Salmonelloses are already the second most notified gastrointestinal diseases in Victoria, and these findings suggest that notifications may increase with increasing temperatures. This evidence contributes to previous findings that indicate concerns for public health with continued warm weather.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salmonella is a major cause of zoonotic illness around the world, arising from direct or indirect contact with a range of animal reservoirs. In the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), salmonellosis is believed to be primarily foodborne, but the relative contribution of animal reservoirs is unknown. METHODS The analysis included 4543 serotyped isolates from animal reservoirs and 30,073 serotyped isolates from domestically acquired human cases in NSW between January 2008 and August 2019. We used a Bayesian source attribution methodology to estimate the proportion of foodborne Salmonella infections attributable to broiler chickens, layer chickens, ruminants, pigs, and an unknown or unsampled source. Additional analyses included covariates for four time periods and five levels of rurality. RESULTS A single serotype, S. Typhimurium, accounted for 65-75% of included cases during 2008-2014 but < 50% during 2017-2019. Attribution to layer chickens was highest during 2008-2010 (48.7%, 95% CrI 24.2-70.3%) but halved by 2017-2019 (23.1%, 95% CrI 5.7-38.9%) and was lower in the rural and remote populations than in the majority urban population. The proportion of cases attributed to the unsampled source was 11.3% (95% CrI 1.2%-22.1%) overall, but higher in rural and remote populations. The proportion of cases attributed to pork increased from approximately 20% in 2009-2016 to approximately 40% in 2017-2019, coinciding with a rise in cases due to Salmonella ser. 4,5,12:i:-. CONCLUSION Layer chickens were likely the primary reservoir of domestically acquired Salmonella infections in NSW circa 2010, but attribution to the source declined contemporaneously with increased vaccination of layer flocks and tighter food safety regulations for the handling of eggs.

Salmonella enterica Serovar Diversity, Distribution, and Prevalence in Public Access Waters from a Central California Coastal Leafy Green Growing Region during 2011 - 2016. Abstract
Prevalence and serovar diversity of Salmonella enterica was measured during a five-year survey of surface waters in a 500 mi^2 agricultural region of the Central California Coast. Rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds were sampled bimonthly resulting in 2,979 samples. Overall prevalence was 56.4% with higher levels detected in Spring than in Fall. Small, but significant, differences in prevalence were detected based on sample locations. Detection of Salmonella was correlated positively with both significant rain events and, in some environments, levels of generic Escherichia coli. Analysis of 1,936 isolates revealed significant serovar diversity, with 91 different serovars detected. The most common isolated serovars were S. enterica subsp. enterica serovars I 6,8:d:- (406 isolates, 21.0%, and potentially monophasic Salmonella Muenchen), Give (334 isolates, 17.3%), Muenchen (158 isolates, 8.2%), Typhimurium (227 isolates, 11.7%), Oranienburg (106 isolates, 5.5%), and Montevideo (78 isolates, 4%). Sixteen of the 24 most common serovars detected in the region are among the serovars reported to cause the most human salmonellosis in the United States. Some of the serovars were associated with location and seasonal bias. Analysis of XbaI Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns of strains of serovars Typhimurium, Oranienburg, and Montevideo showed significant intra-serovar diversity. PFGE pulsotypes were identified in the region for multiple years of the survey, indicating persistence or regular re-introduction to the region. Importance Non-typhoidal Salmonella is the among the leading causes of bacterial foodborne illness and increasing numbers of outbreaks and recalls are due to contaminated produce. High prevalence and 91 different serovars were detected in this leafy green growing region. Seventeen serovars that cause most of the human salmonellosis in the United States were detected, with 16 of those serovars detected in multiple locations and multiple years of the 5-year survey. Understanding the widespread prevalence and diversity of Salmonella in the region will assist in promoting food safety practices and intervention methods for growers and regulators.

Abstract
Estimates of the overall human health impact of agents transmitted commonly through food complement surveillance and help guide food safety interventions and regulatory initiatives. The purpose of this scoping review was to summarize the methods and reporting practices used in studies that estimate the total number of illnesses caused by these agents. We identified and included 43 studies published from January 1, 1995, to December 31, 2019, by searching PubMed and screening selected articles for other relevant publications. Selected articles presented original estimates of the number of illnesses caused by ≥1 agent transmitted commonly through food. The number of agents (species or subspecies for pathogens) included in each study ranged from 1 to 31 (median: 4.5; mean: 9.2). Of the 40 agents assessed across the 43 studies, the most common agent was Salmonella (36; 84% of studies), followed by Campylobacter (33; 77%), Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (25; 58%), and norovirus (20; 47%). Investigators used a variety of data sources and methods that could be grouped into four distinct estimation approaches-direct, surveillance data scaled-up, syndrome or population scaled-down, and inferred. Based on our review, we propose four recommendations to improve the interpretability, comparability, and reproducibility of studies that estimate the number of illnesses caused by agents transmitted commonly through food. These include providing an assessment of statistical and nonstatistical uncertainty, providing a ranking of estimates by agent, including uncertainties; describing the rationale used to select agents and data sources; and publishing raw data and models, along with clear, detailed methods. These recommendations could lead to better decision-making about food safety policies. Although these recommendations have been made in the context of illness estimation for agents transmitted commonly through food, they also apply to estimates of other health outcomes and conditions.

Abstract
In the present study, the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of two 4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole-1-carboximidamide hydrochloride, (trifluoromethyl) phenyl-substituted (compound 1) and bromophenyl-substituted (compound 2), were evaluated against four Salmonella spp. serotypes through broth microdilution and biofilm-forming activity. Further, the cytotoxicity of the compounds was evaluated by cell viability assays using cultures of HeLa and Vero cell lines, and the mutagenic potential was assessed by the Ames test. In the broth microdilution test, compound 1 inhibited 90% of the strains tested at the minimum inhibitory concentration of 62.5 μg mL−1. Furthermore, both compounds prevented biofilm formation, with a reduction of up to 5.2 log10. HeLa and Vero cells exhibited 100% viability in the presence of compound 1. In contrast, low cell viability was observed in the presence of 15 µg mL−1 of compound 2. Furthermore, no mutagenic potential was detected at any of the tested concentrations of compound 1.

Abstract
Salmonellosis is the second most reported gastrointestinal disorder in the EU resulting from the consumption of Salmonella-contaminated foods. Symptoms include gastroenteritis, abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhoea, fever, myalgia, headache, nausea and vomiting. In 2018, Salmonella accounted for more than half of the numbers of foodborne outbreak illnesses reported in the EU. Salmonella contamination is mostly associated with produce such as poultry, cattle and their feeds but other products such as dried foods, infant formula, fruit and vegetable products and pets have become important. Efforts aimed at controlling Salmonella are being made. For example, legislation and measures put in place reduced the number of hospitalizations between 2014 and 2015. However, the number of hospitalizations started to increase in 2016. This calls for more stringent controls at the level of government and the private sector. Food handlers of "meat processing" and "Ready to Eat" foods play a crucial role in the spread of Salmonella. This review presents an updated overview of the global epidemiology, the relevance of official control, the disease associated with food handlers and the importance of food safety concerning salmonellosis.

Abstract
Background While whole genome sequencing (WGS) may be more expensive than traditional testing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), simple cost comparisons ignore the potential for WGS to reduce the societal costs of non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica through public health action to prevent illness. Methods We determined how many cases the use of WGS data would need to prevent to be cost-equal to serotyping and MLVA, or culture independent testing based on PCR in Australia. We then examined the costs and cost-savings of current typing methods compared with WGS in outbreak scenarios. Results A median of 275 (90% CrI -55-775) or 1.9% (90% CrI -0.4%-5.4%) of notified serotyped Salmonella cases would need to be prevented for WGS to be cost-equal to current typing methods and 1,550 (90% CrI 820–2,725) or 9.6% of all notified Salmonella cases would need to be prevented to be cost-equal to PCR. WGS is likely to result in cost savings in prolonged outbreaks, where data can support earlier public health action. Conclusions Despite currently having a higher cost per isolate, routine WGS of Salmonella was no more expensive than existing typing methods or PCR where >2% of illness was averted.
