Oral myiasis: A known case of scar epilepsy in a 45-year-old

Abstract

A uncommon disease known as oral myiasis (OM) is brought on by parasitic larvae that consume both living and dead tissue. OM cases in humans are scarce, although most of those reported come from developing nations or tropical regions. This case report describes a rare larvae infestation in the oral cavity of a 45-year-old woman who had previously undergone a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt procedure, convulsions, and fever. The patient presented with episodic grand-mal seizures accompanied by fever for 2 days. She is a known case of scar epilepsy and underwent VP shunting due to hydrocephalus post-meningoencephalitis 16 years ago. The patient subsequently underwent symptomatic treatment and was later diagnosed with OM during her management. Histopathology of the biopsy following wound debridement revealed invasive fungal growth causing necrosis and erosion of the buccal mucosa and palate with no evidence of malignancy. The presentation of OM is an infrequent and exclusively rare entity. Our study aims to present the possible circumstances under which people suffer from this deteriorating condition in juxtaposition to scar epilepsy. This case report highlights the significance of prompt medicinal intervention and debridement coupled with preventative measures undertaken for a better prognosis and longevity.

Rhinomyiasis: clinical and surgical management

Myiasis by Oestrus ovis, the zoonotic infestation with Diptera larvae, primarily diagnosed in goats and rams in tropical and Mediterranean countries, is an uncommon disease in humans; indeed, literature data are still lacking. Nevertheless, few cases of human myiasis have been reported, leading to benign or severe complications. Here, we report a rare case of human rhinomyiasis detected in Northern Italy. A 39-year-old Italian woman, returning from vacation in Corsica, showed several sinusal symptoms and progressive asthenia and was therefore admitted at the Otorhinolaryngology Unit of Biella Hospital, Italy. Endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity revealed some formations, morphologically identified as O. ovis larvae. The patient then underwent endoscopic sinus surgery, followed by complete resolution of symptoms. Clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up and therapeutic procedures have been compared with few other cases found in the literature.

Oral Myiasis of Maxilla (Palatal Gingiva)

Myiasis is an invasion of tissues and organs of humans or animals by fly larvae. Oral myiasis is a rare pathology associated with a medical condition, poor oral hygiene, mouth breathing, and incompetent lip. We present a case of oral myiasis of the maxillary anterior region of the palate, in a 12-year-old male with cerebral palsy and poor oral hygiene. The diagnosis was made on the presence of larvae. The mechanical removal of larvae with hemostat was carried out with ivermectin oral therapy.

Report of a rare case of severe allergic reaction due to nasal myiasis and a brief review of the literature in Turkey

Myiasis is defined as infestation of a mammal by fly larvae. It may occur on either living tissues (primary myiasis) or dead tissues (secondary myiasis). In this report, we present a patient with myiasis with an extremely rare clinical manifestation and severe allergic reaction, and we review the literature in order to reveal the current status. A 20-year-old female patient was admitted to our emergency department due to rush on face, cough and shortness of breath. The maggot came out of her nose was identified as Oestrus ovis. With a diagnosis of severe allergic reaction due to myiasis, she was treated diphenhidramine, prednisone and inhale albuterol in the emergency department. After treatment and further investigation, she was discharged with full recovery. Myiasis is a rare cause for severe allergic reaction in patients with definite diagnosis. Immediate diagnosis and treatment are milestones in preventing bad outcomes.
