Abstract
BACKGROUND Mandibular retraction is a prevalent dental and maxillofacial deformity that negatively affects patients' functional health and facial aesthetics. It has been challenging to achieve optimal outcomes for patients who have passed the peak of growth and development using only functional orthopedic treatment. There is a pressing need to explore innovative methods to promote the adaptive remodeling of adult condylar cartilage and the mandible in response to external stimuli. This study aimed to investigate the impact of varying injection frequencies of stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs) on the growth and development of condylar cartilage and the mandible, as well as their potential for adaptive remodeling. METHODS The study was conducted on 8-week-old adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. The effects of SCAPs injection and different durations of mandibular advancement (MA) on the adaptive remodeling of condylar cartilage and the mandible were assessed. After the initial experimental findings, various injection frequencies of SCAPs were applied to determine the most effective conditions for promoting the growth and adaptive remodeling of condylar cartilage and the mandible during an 8-week period of mandibular advancement. RESULTS The study found that rats with extended mandibular lead times (8 weeks) or an appropriately increased frequency of mandibular leading time (once every 2 weeks or once every 1 week) exhibited increased lengths of the mandibular body and ascending branch, and a thickened full layer of condylar cartilage. The highest proportions of the proliferative layer, mature layer, and hypertrophic layer were observed in these rats. Additionally, there was a significant increase in the expression levels of SOX9 and COL2A1. CONCLUSION The data from this study suggest that adult rats, even after missing their peak growth period, retain the potential for continued growth and development of their condylar cartilage. By prolonging the duration of mandibular advancement and administering injections of stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs), it is possible to stimulate the growth and development of the mandibular condyle.

Abstract
Background Diagnosing asymmetries and restoring functional balance are challenges in facial rehabilitation and aesthetic procedures. This cross-sectional observational study aimed to evaluate whether occlusal imbalance and the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles in young women may be associated with facial asymmetry. Material and Methods Fifty women (mean age ± standard deviation: 22.5 ± 2.7), without temporomandibular dysfunction and with balanced facial profiles, were divided into two groups categorized by receiver operating characteristic analysis: symmetric (n=25) and asymmetric (n=25). The variables included the evaluation of asymmetry through clinical examination, quantification of asymmetry using stereophotogrammetry through the root mean square method, asymmetry of occlusal contacts, and electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in both latero-lateral and antero-posterior directions. The mean asymmetry indices were compared using Welch's t-test and the Mann-Whitney test. The impact of occlusal and muscular imbalance on facial asymmetry was assessed through linear regression analysis. Results A significant difference was observed between the groups in the asymmetry of occlusal contacts, with a considerable effect size (p<0.01 - Cohen's d=0.73). The imbalance in the electromyographic activities of the masseter and temporal muscles was considered a predictor of facial asymmetry (F=4.00, p<0.02, R²=0.15). Conclusions Occlusal imbalance and electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles are associated with facial asymmetry. Abstract
AIM This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles in adult women who underwent buccal fat removal. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample consisted of 20 healthy adult women with no temporomandibular dysfunction and normal occlusion, who were assessed before, 30, and 60 days after the surgery. The electromyographic signal of the masseter and temporal muscles was captured through mandibular tasks including rest, protrusion, right and left laterality, and maximum voluntary contraction with and without parafilm. The results obtained were tabulated and the Shapiro-Wilk normality test was performed, which indicated a normal distribution. Statistical analysis was performed using the repeated measures test (p < 0.05). RESULTS Significant differences were observed between time periods in maximum voluntary contraction for the left masseter muscle (p = 0.006) and in maximum voluntary contraction with parafilm for the right temporal (p = 0.03) and left temporal (p = 0.03) muscles. CONCLUSION Bichectomy surgery did not modify the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporal muscles during the rest task but may have influenced variations in the electromyographic signal during different mandibular tasks after 60 days of surgery, suggesting compensatory adaptations and functional recovery. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Understanding the impact of buccal fat removal surgery on the stomatognathic system function provides insights into postoperative functional recovery and potential compensatory adaptations, guiding clinical management and rehabilitation strategies for patients undergoing such procedures. Abstract
CrossFit is a high-intensity training related to physical fitness and respiratory capacity that can promote changes in lung function. This cross-sectional study was aimed at evaluating respiratory muscle strength, electromyographic (EMG) activity, and lung capacity in CrossFit athletes. Thirty subjects aged between 25 and 35 years were divided into groups: CrossFit athletes (n=15) and sedentary individuals without comorbidities (n=15). Respiratory muscle strength was evaluated using maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressures, lung capacity, and EMG of the sternocleidomastoid, serratus anterior, external intercostal, and diaphragm muscles at respiratory rest, maximal inspiration and expiration, and respiratory cycle. Data were tabulated and subjected to statistical analyses (t-test and Spearman test, P<0.05). Respiratory muscle strength on EMG of the sternocleidomastoid, serratus, external intercostal, and diaphragm muscles at the respiratory cycle and maximal forced inspiration and expiration were higher in the CrossFit athletes group than in the sedentary group without comorbidities. CrossFit athlete group showed significantly strong positive correlation between maximal inspiratory and expiratory muscle strengths (Spearman rho= 0.903, P=0.000), with increasing muscle strength during inspiration favoring an increase in strength during expiration. The forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) also showed a significantly high positive correlation (Spearman rho=0.912, P=0.000) in the CrossFit athletes group, showing that higher FVC favors higher FEV1. The results of this study suggest that improved fitness is based on increased respiratory muscle strength on EMG in CrossFit athletes.

Effect of malocclusion on jaw motor function and chewing in children: a systematic review. Clin Oral Investig 2022; 26:2335-2351. Abstract
Objective To investigate the effects of dental/skeletal malocclusion and orthodontic treatment on four main objective parameters of chewing and jaw function (maximum occlusal bite force [MOBF], masticatory muscle electromyography [EMG], jaw kinematics, and chewing efficiency/performance) in healthy children. Materials and methods Systematic searches were conducted in MEDLINE (OVID), Embase, and the Web of Science Core Collection. Studies that examined the four parameters in healthy children with malocclusions were included. The quality of studies and overall evidence were assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute and GRADE tools, respectively. Results The searches identified 8192 studies; 57 were finally included. The quality of included studies was high in nine studies, moderate in twenty-three studies, and low in twenty-five studies. During the primary dentition, children with malocclusions showed similar MOBF and lower chewing efficiency compared to control subjects. During mixed/permanent dentition, children with malocclusion showed lower MOBF and EMG activity and chewing efficiency compared to control subjects. The jaw kinematics of children with unilateral posterior crossbite showed a larger jaw opening angle and a higher frequency of reverse chewing cycles compared to crossbite-free children. There was a low to moderate level of evidence on the effects of orthodontic treatment in restoring normal jaw function. Conclusions Based on the limitations of the studies included, it is not entirely possible to either support or deny the influence of dental/skeletal malocclusion traits on MOBF, EMG, jaw kinematics, and masticatory performance in healthy children. Furthermore, well-designed longitudinal studies may be needed to determine whether orthodontic treatments can improve chewing function in general. Clinical relevance Comprehensive orthodontic treatment, which includes evaluation and restoration of function, may or may not mitigate the effects of malocclusion and restore normal chewing function. Aim
The aim of the study was to evaluate the cephalometric effects of the elastodontic appliance (EA) in the management of patients presenting with a skeletal Class II/1 malocclusion.
Methods
Twenty Class II patients treated using the EA (Group EA) were compared with 20 Class II untreated children (Group C). Cephalograms were compared at the start (T0) and after 24 months (T1) after which time, skeletal, dental, and aesthetic variables were evaluated. A statistical evaluation was conducted by applying an unpaired t-test for normally distributed variables.
Results
From T0 to T1, the EA group showed a significant increase in lower facial height (LFH), in mandibular length (Co-Gn), in the upper incisor and cranial plane angle (1 + SN) and in the distance between a true vertical line (TVL)-soft tissue B (B’) and TVL-soft tissue Pogonion (Pog’) points. From T0 to T1, group C showed a significant decrease in SN-occlusal plane (PO) (p < 0.01), of SN-mandibular plane (Go-Me) (p < 0.01) and of total gonial (N-Go-Me) angles (p < 0.05); a significant reduction of the distance between TVL-upper incisor (1+), TVL-lower lip (Li), and TVL-Pog’ was shown. No statistical differences were observed between the groups in dental and aesthetic outcomes, except for a skeletal increase in LFH (p < 0.05) and in Co-Gn length (p < 0.05), which was statistically significant in the EA group.
Conclusion
In Class II growing patients, the EA induces minor skeletal effects, compared to untreated control patients.

Abstract
The maintenance of postural balance can be influenced by the lifestyle of a population. This study aimed to determine the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles during mandibular tasks and habitual and non-habitual chewing in indigenous individuals to reveal the differences among white Brazilian individuals. Sixty Brazilians (18 and 28 years) were divided into two groups: 30 Xingu indigenous individuals and 30 white Brazilian individuals, with 20 men and 10 women in each group. The individuals were assessed using the normalized electromyographic activity of mandibular tasks (rest, protrusion, right and left laterality) and electromyographic activity of masticatory cycles in habitual (peanuts and raisins) and non-habitual (Parafilm M) chewing. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test (p < .05). Comparisons between the groups demonstrated significant differences. Indigenous individuals group presented a decrease in the normalized electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles during mandibular rest [right masseter (p = .002) and left masseter (p = .004) muscles]. There was increase in the normalized electromyographic activity during protrusion [left temporal (p = .03) muscle]. There was increase in the electromyographic activity during chewing: peanuts [right masseter (p = .001), left masseter (p = .001) and right temporal (p = .01) muscles], raisins [right masseter (p = .001), left masseter (p = .002), right temporal (p = .008), left temporal (p = .01) muscles] and Parafilm M [left masseter muscle (p = .05)]. From the findings of this study, we concluded that in the comparison between indigenous and white individuals, positive changes were observed in the electromyographic pattern of the masticatory muscles in the mandibular postural conditions, with greater masticatory efficiency in the indigenous group.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate how the features of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and the degree of mandibular advancement influence the outcomes of oral appliance therapy with a fully-customised mandibular advancement device (MAD) in an adult population. A total of 85 adult patients with mild to severe OSA were retrospectively selected. Polysomnography was taken before treatment and after 2 months treatment with overnight MAD. Treatment success was defined as a > 50% reduction in the Apnoea/Hypopnoea Index (AHI) with a residual AHI < 10. Binary logistic regression was used to evaluate the effects of AHI, oxygen desaturation index (ODI), gender and age on the success rate of MAD therapy. MAD therapy was successful in 77.7% of patients, and the ODI was a significant predictor of treatment success. OSA treatment with the MAD was successful in reducing the AHI in adult patients. An ODI value smaller than 33.3 was a significant predictor of treatment success.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to analyse the stomatognathic system of adult women with chronic allergic rhinitis by means of molar bite force and electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles.
Material and Methods A total of 26 subjects were screened and divided into two distinct groups: chronic allergic rhinitis group (n = 13) and healthy control group (n = 13). Subjects were assessed by maximal molar bite force (right and left) and normalized electromyographic activity of mandibular tasks (rest, right and left laterality, protrusion and maximal voluntary contraction). Data were submitted to Student’s t test (p< .05).
Results There was significant difference in right (p = .03) and left (p = .04) maximal molar bite force with force reduction in the chronic allergic rhinitis group. There was significant difference in normalized electromyographic activity in maximal voluntary contraction in the right (p =.01) and left (p = .01) temporalis muscles, with increased electromyographic activity in the masticatory muscles for the chronic allergic rhinitis group. Conclusions The results suggest that chronic allergic rhinitis in adult women promoted negative changes in the electromyographic activity of temporalis muscles in maximal voluntary contraction and maximal molar bite force. Abstract
Background Osteoarthrosis is a severe, evolutionary, chronic, and limiting disease that influences on quality of life, as it affects synovial joints and promoted degradation of hyaline articular cartilage. We sought to determine if electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles and quality of life are negatively impacted by osteoarthrosis.
Material and Methods A sample of 72 participants between 40 and 70 years old diagnosed with osteoarthrosis were selected. Forty-eight participants met the inclusion criteria of this study and were divided into two distinct groups: with osteoarthrosis (n=24) and without osteoarthrosis (n=24). Electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles (mandibular rest, right laterality, left laterality, protrusion, and dental clenching in maximal voluntary contraction) and quality of life measurements were used. Electromyographic activity was used to analyze muscle activation patterns. OHIP-14Br and SF-36 questionnaires determined the quality of life.
Results The participants with osteoarthrosis presented significant greater electromyographic activity (p≤0.05) at rest for the right temporal muscle (p=0.04), maximum voluntary contraction for the left masseter muscle (P=0.04), repercussions of oral conditions on quality of life by the sum of OHIP-14 (p=0.002), and a statistically significant difference was found in all subgroups of the SF-36 scale between the subjects with and without osteoarthrosis (p≤0.001).
Conclusions People with osteoarthrosis have changes in electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles and quality of life compared to healthy participants. Key words:Electromyography, quality of life, bone diseases.

Abstract
Swallowing dysfunction is a frequent disorder among children and refers to an altered tongue posture and abnormal tongue movement during swallowing. Removable functional appliance is one of the treatments applied by dentistry to correct this disorder. The aim of this study was to evaluate any differences on orofacial muscles activity in children with swallowing dysfunction with and without removable functional appliances. 68 children were eligible for the study and divided into the orthodontic group (OG) and the no-orthodontic group (NO-OG). Both groups performed a dental occlusion-class evaluation, a swallowing function test and a myoscan analysis in order to measure perioral forces (i.e. tongue extension force, lip pressure, masseter contraction force). Our results showed a significant difference (P=0.02) between OG and NO-OG for the tongue extension force, whereas no significant differences (P>0.05) were found for the other parameters. Our findings suggest that children with swallowing dysfunction and removable functional appliance show orofacial muscles activity within the range of reference values (except for the lip pressure). However, we hypothesize that orthodontic treatment can achieve more effective results with integration of myofunctional therapy.

Abstract
Background This study evaluated the efficiency of masticatory cycles by means of the linear envelope of the electromyographic signal of the masseter and temporalis muscles in individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Material and Methods Twenty-four individuals were assigned into two groups: with Parkinson’s disease, average ± SD 66.1 ± 3.3 years (n = 12) and without the disease, average ± SD: 65.8 ± 3.0 years (n = 12). The MyoSystem-I P84 electromyograph was used to analyze the activity of masticatory cycles through the linear envelope integral in habitual mastication of peanuts and raisins and non-habitual mastication of Parafilm M®. Results There was statistically significant difference (P ≤ 0.05) between individuals with Parkinson’s disease and without the disease in non-habitual mastication of Parafilm M®, in the right temporal muscle (P = 0.01); habitual mastication of peanuts, in the right temporal muscle (P = 0.02), left temporal muscle (P = 0.03), and right masseter muscle (P = 0.01); and habitual mastication of raisins in the right temporal muscle (P = 0.001), left temporal muscle (P= 0.001), right masseter muscle (P= 0.001) and left masseter muscle (P= 0.03). Conclusions These results suggest that Parkinson’s disease interferes in the electromyographic activity of the masticatory cycles by reducing muscular efficiency. Abstract
Background The aim of the present study was to evaluate if the different muscular activity correlated to different degrees of facial divergence has an effect on the time needed to extrude a palatally impacted maxillary canine. Material and Methods Twenty-six patients were retrospectively selected, all treated with a specific cantilever appliance that allows extrusion of the impacted canine applying a physiologic amount of force below 0.6 N in a predictable way. For all the patients, pre-treatment cephalometric tracings were used to evaluate facial divergence through the FMA angle, the angle between the maxillary and mandibular plane, and the angles between the occlusal plane and either the maxillary and mandibular plane. Linear bivariate regression was calculated to evaluate if facial divergence can predict the time needed for canine extrusion. Results The linear regression model was not able to predict extrusion time from variables explaining the facial divergence. Conclusions Palatally impacted maxillary canines can be treated with the application of physiologic extrusion force regardless of patients’ facial divergence and muscular activity. Abstract
AIM This study aimed to evaluate the electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles of women with rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS The sample comprised 28 women divided into two groups: 14 with rheumatoid arthritis [mean age: 52.2 ± standard deviation (SD): 3 years] and 14 without rheumatoid arthritis (mean age: 49.4 ± SD: 2.4 years). The women were paired by age and body mass index. The electromyographic activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles was analyzed in mandibular tasks: rest, right and left laterality, protrusion, maximal voluntary contraction with and without Parafilm M®, habitual and non-habitual chewing. The MANOVA (multivariate analysis of variance) was used to compare the means of the two independent groups, considering as independent variable side and diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, and age as the covariate. The Bonferroni correction was used for the post hoc comparisons (p <0.05). RESULTS Rheumatoid arthritis group presented an increase in the normalized electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles and lower mean values for the habitual and non-habitual chewing. CONCLUSIONS Women with rheumatoid arthritis showed functional alterations in the stomatognathic system, demonstrated through muscular hyperactivity and reduction of masticatory efficiency.
