Abstract
Neuro-occlusal rehabilitation (N.O.R.) is a discipline of the stomatognathic medicine that defends early treatments of functional malocclusions, such as unilateral crossbite, for the correction of craniofacial development, avoiding surgical procedures later in life. Nevertheless, N.O.R.'s advances have not been proved analytically yet due to the difficulties of evaluate the mechanical response after the treatment. This study aims to evaluate computationally the effect of N.O.R.'s treatments during childhood. Therefore, bilateral chewing and maximum intercuspation occlusion were modelled through a detailed finite element model of a paediatric craniofacial complex, before and after different selective grinding-alternatives. This model was subjected to the muscular forces derived from a musculoskeletal model and was validated by the occlusal contacts recorded experimentally. This approach yielded errors below 2% and reproduced successfully the occlusal, muscular, functional and mechanical imbalance before the therapies. Treatment strategies balanced the occlusal plane and reduced the periodontal overpressure (>4.7 kPa) and the mandibular over deformation (>0.002 ε) on the crossed side. Based on the principles of the mechanostat theory of bone remodelling and the pressure-tension theory of tooth movement, these findings could also demonstrate how N.O.R.'s treatments correct the malocclusion and the asymmetrical development of the craniofacial complex. Besides, N.O.R.'s treatments slightly modified the stress state and functions of the temporomandibular joints, facilitating the chewing by the unaccustomed side. These findings provide important biomechanical insights into the use of N.O.R.'s treatments for the correction of unilateral crossbite, but also encourage the application of computing methods in biomedical research and clinical practise.

Abstract
The aim of optimal dentistry is to stabilise the stomatognathic system (teeth, periodontium, muscles and temporomandibular joint). All of these must work in harmony, as together they provide optimal care from diagnosis through planning to treatment. However, many clinicians currently give little importance to the identification of premature contacts and/or interferences prior to any dental treatment, which should be taken into account to provide improved stability in mandibular closure, correct anterior and canine guidance in mandibular movements.This clinical case describes the treatment of a patient with a diagnosis of functional occlusal disorder due to premature contact, whose treatment consisted of an occlusal adjustment by selective wear, following the technique described by the author Klineberg, with the aim of preserving the dental structure as much as possible while maintaining control during the occlusal adjustment and returning the greatest number of symmetrical and pointed contacts.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The objective of our clinical trial was to determine the effectiveness of the deep dry needling technique (DDN) (neuromuscular deprogramming) as a first step in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders. Methods and Materials: The double-blind randomized clinical trial comprised 36 patients meeting the inclusion criteria who had signed the corresponding informed consent form. The participants were randomly distributed into two groups, the Experimental group (Group E) and the Control group (Group C). Group E received bilateral DDN on the masseter muscle, while Group C received a simulation of the technique (PN). All the participants were evaluated three times: pre-needling, 10 min post-needling, and through a follow-up evaluation after 15 days. These evaluations included, among other tests: pain evaluation using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and bilateral muscle palpation with a pressure algometer; evaluation of the opening pattern and range of the mouth, articular sounds and dental occlusion using T-scans; and electromyography, which was used to evaluate the muscle tone of the masseter muscles, in order to control changes in mandibular position. Results: Digital control of occlusion using Tec-Scan (digital occlusion analysis) showed a significant reduction both in the time of posterior disclusion and in the time needed to reach maximum force in an MI position after needling the muscle, which demonstrated that there were variations in the static position and the trajectory of the jaw. The symmetry of the arch while opening and closing the mouth was recovered in a centric relation, with an increase in the opening range of the mouth after the procedure. Conclusions: facial pain is significantly reduced and is accompanied by a notable reduction in muscle activity after needling its trigger points.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To detect the long-term response to unilateral anterior crossbite (UAC) in masticatory muscles and in molecular biomarkers of peripheral blood leukocytes. DESIGN Fifty-six six-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were used. The gene-fold changes in peripheral blood leukocytes were detected by the microarray analysis to compare the rats that received 20-week UAC treatment with age-matched controls (n = 4). Muscle atrophy-related gene Fbxo32 was selected based on the data of the microarray analysis verified by using real-time PCR. The remaining 36 rats were randomly separated in the UAC and control groups at 12 and 20 weeks (n = 12). The protein expression of Fbxo32 and the muscle injury and myogenesis-related markers, αB-crystallin and desmin, were detected in the masseter and lateral pterygoid muscles by western blot assay. RESULTS In the 20-week UAC group, the masseter muscle weight was lower than that in the age-matched control group, and the expression level of Fbxo32 gene in peripheral blood leukocytes was increased according to the microarray analysis confirmed by real-time PCR detection. The increased protein expression levels of Fbxo32 were detected in the masseter in the 20-week UAC group, and the protein expression levels of desmin and αB-crystallin were decreased at this time point. No similar changes were detected in the lateral pterygoid muscle. CONCLUSIONS Masseter atrophy is induced by long-term stimulation of UAC. The increased expression of the Fbxo32 gene in peripheral blood leukocytes may be a candidate biological marker of masseter atrophy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For patients whose centric relation (CR) has not been considered at the start and during treatment, the task of achieving an occlusal scheme that works together with the temporomandibular joint, the muscles, and the structures of the stomatognathic apparatus becomes a major concern. OBJECTIVE This study aims to describe a reproducible, predictable and to date unreported procedure of selective grinding guided by an occlusal splint and to analyze condylar position (CP) based on the skeletal pattern. METHODS A total of 72 symptomatic patients (38 females and 34 males) were classified into three groups: hyperdivergent, intermediate and hypodivergent. CP was quantified by mounted casts on a measures condyle displacement (MCD) device. Helkimo index was also performed in order to assess the severity of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders attending to clinical dysfunction, occlusal state and anamnestic dysfunction. Once the stability had been obtained, the splint was progressively reduced until the maximum intercuspation (MIC) was achieved. RESULTS The vertical displacement was found to be significantly different between the hyperdivergent and other two groups (p<0.01). Comparisons of MCD analysis before and after the selective grinding procedure identified a statistically significant difference in the horizontal and vertical CP (p<0.01) between the different groups whereas the Helkimo Index showed a clear improvement of TMJ disorders. CONCLUSION All facial types, specially the hyperdivergent face type, showed a reduction in condylar displacement (CD) and less craniomandibular symptoms using this procedure, making it an excellent technique for clinicians.
