Association between Osteoprotegerin rs2073618 polymorphism and peri-implantitis susceptibility: a meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

Peri-implantitis was an inflammatory progress on the tissue around the implant. The Osteoprotegerin G1181C (rs2073618) polymorphism was reported to be related to the increased risk of the peri-implantitis, whereas another found no relationship. The present study was conducted to research the relationship between Osteoprotegerin rs2073618 polymorphism and peri-implantitis susceptibility.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The meta-analysis was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews. Electronic databases including PubMed, Web of science, Springer Link and Embase (updated to April 15, 2022) were retrieved. The cohort study, case-control study or cross-sectional study focusing on the Osteoprotegerin rs2073618 polymorphism and peri-implantitis were retrieved. The data included basic information of each study and the genotype and allele frequencies of the cases and controls.

RESULTS

Three studies were finally included, including 160 cases and 271 controls. Allelic model, homozygote model, recessive model, dominant model, and heterozygous model were established to assess the relationship between OPG rs2073618 polymorphism and peri-implantitis susceptibility. The Osteoprotegerin rs2073618 polymorphism was significantly associated with peri-implantitis in Recessive model and Homozygote model.

CONCLUSION

OPG rs2073618 polymorphism in Recessive model and Homozygote model was highly likely related to the risk of peri-implantitis. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42022320812.

[Use of current imaging tools for the study of odontogenic myxoma. A review of the literature]

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is currently classified as a benign tumor of ectomesenchymal origin, observed between the second and fourth decade of age, with a predilection in women and predominance in the mandibular region, composed of rounded and angular cells embedded in an abundant myxoid stroma, of aggressive biological behavior, having the characteristic of being locally infiltrative. Tumor cells spread in the intratrabecular space beyond the bone limit, making it difficult to determine the edge of the tumor, even without cortical continuity, presenting intermittent direct contact with soft tissue; the appearance can be unilocular (small lesions), or commonly the typical image is that of a destructive lesion with poorly defined borders with a multilocular growth pattern, for which the use of advanced medical images such as Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CTHC), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), are useful to establish an adequate diagnosis with the ability to point out the characteristics of OM with precision and three-dimensional perspective. This review presents a systematic analysis of the types of imaging tools currently used for the study of OM.

The molecular mechanism of platelet lysate promotes transformation of non-union cells into osteoblasts

Background

Platelet lysate (PL) had a remarkable therapeutic effect on bone repair related diseases, such as delayed fracture healing, femoral head necrosis and meniscal tear. In this study, we investigated the effect of PL on patients with nonunion, cartilage repair and osteonecrosis, and to evaluate the effect of PL on nonunion cells proliferation and the effect of PL on OPG/RANKL signaling pathway in nonunion cell of male rats. To reveal the molecular mechanism of PL for bone healing.

Methods

We used different concentrations of PL to treat nonunion cells, then detected cell proliferation and protein expression levels of osteoprotegerin (OPG), RANKL, osteopontin (OPN), osteocalcin (OCN) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP).

Results

The proliferation rate of nonunion cells treated by 5% PL, was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). Surprisingly, there were no significant difference among the proliferation rates of nonunion cells treated by 8% PL, 10% FBS and the control group (P>0.05). the results of western blot analysis and immunofluorescence analysis showed that PL improved the expression of OPG, OPN, OCN and ALP proteins in nonunion cells, but PL had no effect on the expression of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) protein.

Conclusions

We found that PL had a remarkable therapeutic effect on bone repair related diseases; 5% PL significantly improved the proliferation rate of the nonunion cells; 10% PL had a significantly positive effect on improving the expression levels of osteogenic related genes.

The Process of Osteoblastic Infection by Staphylococcus Aureus

Bone infection is difficult to cure, and relapse frequently occurs, which is a major treatment problem. One of the main reasons for the refractory and recurrent nature of bone infection is that bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), can be internalized into osteoblasts after infecting bone tissue, thereby avoiding attack by the immune system and antibiotics. Understanding how bacteria (such as S. aureus) are internalized into osteoblasts is key to effective treatment. S. aureus is the most common pathogenic bacterium that causes bone infection. This paper reviews the literature, analyzes the specific process of osteoblastic S. aureus infection, and summarizes specific treatment strategies to improve bone infection treatment.
